Optimization of the aircraft panel assembly constructed by skin and stringers is investigated. For the design of panel assembly of the aircraft structure, it is necessary to determine the best shape of the stringer which accomplishes lowest weight under the condition of no instability. A panel assembly can fail in a variety of instability modes under compression. Overall modes of flexure or torsion can occur and these can interact in a combined flexural/torsion mode. Flexure and torsion can occur symmetrically or anti-symmetrically. Local instabilities can also occur. The local instabilities considered in this paper are buckling of the free and attached flanges, the stiffener web and the inter-rivet buckling. A program is developed to find out critical load for each instability mode at the specific stringer shape. Based on the developed program, optimization is performed to find optimum stringer shape. The developed instability analysis program is not adequate for sensitivity analysis, therefore RSM (Response Surface Method) is utilized instead to model weight and instability constraints. Since the problem has many local minimum, Genetic algorithm is utilized to find global optimum.
The aim of this paper concerns with the nonlinear analysis of cable-stayed bridges including the vibration effect of cable stays. Two models for the cable stay system are built up in the study. One is the OECS (one element cable system) model in which one single element per cable stay is used and the other is MECS (multi-elements cable system) model, where multi-elements per cable stay are used. A finite element computation procedure has been set up for the nonlinear analysis of such kind of structures. For shape finding of the cable-stayed bridge with MECS model, an efficient computation procedure is presented by using the two-loop iteration method (equilibrium iteration and shape iteration) with help of the catenary function method to discretize each single cable stay. After the convergent initial shape of the bridge is found, further analysis can then be performed. The structural behaviors of cable-stayed bridges influenced by the cable lateral motion will be examined here detailedly, such as the static deflection, the natural frequencies and modes, and the dynamic responses induced by seismic loading. The results show that the MECS model offers the real shape of cable stays in the initial shape, and all the natural frequencies and modes of the bridge including global modes and local modes. The global mode of the bridge consists of coupled girder, tower and cable stays motion and is a coupled mode, while the local mode exhibits only the motion of cable stays and is uncoupled with girder and tower. The OECS model can only offers global mode of tower and girder without any motion of cable stays, because each cable stay is represented by a single straight cable (or truss) element. In the nonlinear seismic analysis, only the MECS model can offer the lateral displacement response of cable stays and the axial force variation in cable stays. The responses of towers and girders of the bridge determined by both OECS- and MECS-models have no great difference.
Mode shapes and natural frequencies of vibrating laminated composite plates are taken using real-time and time-average holographic interferometry. Debonds and delamination in the laminated plates are measured nondestructively. During holographic testing of composite plates, it has been found that the conditions for the local resonance in debonds are strongly dependent on the frequency of excitation. A membrane resonance model was proposed to describe this behavior. Relations between characteristic length according to the size, shape of debonds and membrane resonance frequency are presented. Several experiments were performed to verify the membrane resonance model. The agreements between the predicted excitation frequency and the observed resonance frequency are good. The experimental results show that higher stresses and strains due to local resonance lead to the debond detection.
Monotonic four-point bending tests were conducted on straight pipe specimens, 102 mm in diameter with local wall thinning, in order to investigate the effects of the depth, shape, and location of wall thinning on the deformation and failure behavior of pipes. The local wall thinning simulated natural erosion/corrosion metal loss. The deformation and fracture behavior of the straight pipes with local wall thinning was compared with that of non wall-thinning pipes. The failure modes were classifiedas local buckling, ovalization, or crack initiation, depending on the depth, shape, and location of the local wall thinning. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were carried out using the finite element method. The deformation and failure behavior, simulated by finite element analyses, coincided with the experimental results.
Local deformations in back filling materials of two sands and one glass bead with different particle shapes behind a rigid retaining wall were studied. Two kinds of boundary conditions were compared: active wall translation and active rotation of the wall about its toe. Effect of the speed of active wall translation was also investigated. The digital image correlation method was used to analyze local deformation developments inside the materials. Test results showed that particle shape and density mainly influence the inclination angle and width of the shear band. The general shear band pattern is strongly dependent on the wall movement mode, while it was little influenced by particle shape. Within a limited range of wall speed in this study, shear band became wider and local deformation became larger with increase of wall speed.
An attempt is conducted to explore the relationship between the macroscopic global damage and the local damage of shear-type RC frames. A story damage index, which can be expressed as multi-variate functions of modal parameters, is deduced based on the tridiagonal matrix of the shear-type frame. The global damage model is also originated from structural modal parameters. Due to the connection of modal damage indexes, the relationship between the macroscopic global damage and the local story damage is reasonably established. In order to validate the derivation, a case study is carried out via an 8-story shear-type frame. The sensitivities of modal damage indexes to the location and severity of local story damages are studied. The evolution of the global damage is investigated as well. Results show that the global damage is sensitive to the degree of story damage, but it's not sensitive to its location. As the number of the damaged stories increases, more and more modes will be involved. Meanwhile, the global damage evolution curve changes from the concave shape to the S-type and then finally transforms into the convex shape. Through the proposed story damage, modal damage and global damage model, a multi-level damage assessment method is established.
After The Industrial Revolution in 18th century, constructions were done with universal material (concrete) in everywhere instead of using materials that are produced in each country because of development of industry material and transportation. This change caused the buildings to become trite with no local characteristics. Hereupon, the study intends to understand the essence of matter and restore various construction methods of each matter with the topic of 'Immateriality'. Immateriality is the revealed concept based on Materiality. Consequently the process and characteristics of immateriality shown on the works of Kuma Kengo and Herzog & de Meuron, three kinds of features can be found of immateriality expression mode. They are as in the following. First, there is a mode of transforming the shape and properties in physical or psychological way by observer. Second, there is a mode of conflating the shape and properties in physical or psychological way by observer. Third, there is a mode of mixing the shape and properties in physical or psychological way by observer.

This paper defines the modified effective membrane stiffness, bending stiffness considering the directionally dependent mechanical properties and mode shape function of a composite lattice rectangular plate, which is assumed to be a Kirchhoff-Love plate. It subsequently presents an approximate method of conducting a buckling analysis of the composite lattice rectangular plate with various boundary conditions under uniform compression using the Ritz method. This method considers the coupled buckling mode as well as the global and local buckling modes. The validity of the present method is verified by comparing the results of the finite element analysis. In addition, this paper performs a parametric analysis to investigate the effects of the design parameters on the critical load and buckling mode shape of the composite lattice rectangular plate based on the present method. The results allow a database to be obtained on the buckling characteristics of composite lattice rectangular plates. Consequently, it is concluded that the present method which facilitates the calculation of the critical load and buckling mode shape according to the design parameters as well as the parametric analysis are very useful not only because of their structural design but also because of the buckling analysis of composite lattice structures.
The failure mode of a pipe due to local wall thinning is increasingly more attention in the nuclear power plant industry. To assess the integrity of locally wall thinned pipe, it is necessary to perform many simulations under various conditions. Because the modeling for locally wall thinned elbow is more complicated than that of straight pipe the efficient modeling method for finite element analysis is necessary. In this study, the more simple efficient modeling method of three-dimensional finite element analysis for locally wall thinned elbow has been suggested and verified. And using the method, the failure mode of local wall thinned elbows that have different thinning lengths and circumferential angles is evaluated. From the results, we concluded that the collapse load of elbows has been decreased by the increase of wall thinning shape factors such as thinning lengths and circumferential angles.
