This paper is presented to determine the optimal parameters of squeeze film damper using an enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA). The damper design parameters are the radius, length and radial clearance of the damper. The objective function is minimization of a transmitted load between bearing and foundation at the operating and critical speeds of a flexible rotor. The present algorithm was the synthesis of a genetic algorithm with simplex method for a local concentrate search. This hybrid algorithm is not only faster than the standard genetic algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution and can find both the global and local optimum solution. The numerical example is presented that illustrated the effectiveness of enhanced genetic algorithm for the optimal design of the squeeze film damper for reducing transmitted load.
In this study, a continuous optimum design model with its application program for plane steel frame structures developed. In the model, the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) transforming the nonlinear optimization problem with multidesign variables and constraints into an unconstrained minimization problem and the refined plastic hinge analysis method as one of the most effective second-order inelastic analysis methods for steel frame structures were implemented. The total weight of a steel frame structure was taken as the objective function, and the AISC-LRFD code requirements for the local and member buckling, flexural strength, shear strength, axial strength and size of the cross-sectional shapes of members were used for the derivation of constraint equations. To verify the appropriateness of the present model, the optimum designs of serveral plane steel frame structures subject to vertical and horizontal loads were conducted.

Wireless Mesh Network has drawn much attention due to wide area service coverage with low system cost. However, there is a bottleneck problem in wireless mesh network since the traffic is aggregated into a gateway. Placement of multi-radio can easy the bottleneck problem, but without careful design it results in unnecessary system cost increasement. In this paper, we propose a system cost minimization through differential antenna placement where optimum antenna placement is determined by the required wireless link capacity. With CPLEX program, optimum number of antennae is determined as a function of local user traffic and gateway capacity. From numerical analysis, it is confirmed that our proposed model can solve bottleneck problem, and at the same time save the system cost.
Motion tracking and object segmentation are the most fundamental and critical problems in vision tasks suck as motion analysis. An active contour model, snake, was developed as a useful segmenting and tracking tool for rigid or non-rigid objects. Snake is designed no the basis of snake energies. Segmenting and tracking can be executed successfully by energy minimization. In this research, two new paradigms for segmentation and tracking are suggested. First, because the conventional method uses only intensity information, it is difficult to separate an object from its complex background. Therefore, a new energy and design schemes should be proposed for the better segmentation of objects. Second, conventional snake can be applied in situations where the change between images is small. If a fast moving object exists in successive images, conventional snake will not operate well because the moving object may have large differences in its position or shape, between successive images. Snakes's nodes may also fall into the local minima in their motion to the new positions of the target object in the succeeding image. For robust tracking, the condensation algorithm was adopted to control the parameters of the proposed snake model called "adaptive color snake model(SCSM)". The effectiveness of the ACSM is verified by appropriate simulations and experiments.
For the reduction of flood damage, it is necessary to analyse shelter activities of local residents and to publish information of floodings, In this paper the control factors of individual refuge activities which are major activities to save peoples lives against floodings have been estimated. Decision making factors for mental refuge activity by the questionnaire survey were classified into two categories: internal and external ones. Furthermore, the behaviour patterns of residents for flood risk related to geographical and social factors were derived by the quantification method n. Since spatial layered information using GIS were corrected and estimated to serve citizen's consensus due to flood disaster, it would aid reduction and minimization of flood risk.d risk.

A new approach, referred to as a successive zooming genetic algorithm (SZGA), is Proposed for identifying a global solution for continuous optimization problems. In order to improve the local fine-tuning capability of GA, we introduced a new method whereby the search space is zoomed around the design point with the best fitness per 100 generation. Furthermore, the reliability of the optimized solution is determined based on the theory of probability. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm, a simple genetic algorithm, micro genetic algorithm, and the proposed algorithm were tested as regards for the minimization of a multiminima function as well as simple functions. The results confirmed that the proposed SZGA significantly improved the ability of the algorithm to identify a precise global minimum. As an example of structural optimization, the SZGA was applied to the optimal location of support points for weight minimization in the radial gate of a dam structure. The proposed algorithm identified a more exact optimum value than the standard genetic algorithms.
In this paper, we study optimal tradeoffs of achievable throughput versus consumed power in wireless ad-hoc networks formed by a collection of multiple antenna nodes. Relying on adaptive modulation and/or dynamic channel coding rate allocation techniques for multiple antenna systems, we examine the maximization of throughput under power constraints as well as the minimization of transmission power under throughput constraints. In our examination, we also consider the impacts of enforcing quality of service requirements expressed in the form of channel coding block loss constraints. In order to properly model temporally correlated loss observed in fading wireless channels, we propose the use of finite-state Markov chains. Details of fading statistics of signal-to-interference-noise ratio, an important indicator of transmission quality, are presented. Further, we objectively inspect complexity versus accuracy tradeoff of solving our proposed optimization problems at a global as oppose to a local topology level. Our numerical simulations profile and compare the performance of a variety of scenarios for a number of sample network topologies.
In this paper, we propose an efficient method for locating human lips. Based on Point Distribution Model and Principle Component Analysis, a lip shape model is built. Lip boundary model is represented based on the concatenated gray level distribution model. We calculate the distribution of shape parameters using Gaussian mixture. The problem to locate lip is simplified as the minimization problem of matching object function. The Down Hill Simplex Algorithm is used for the minimization with Gaussian Mixture for setting initial condition and refining estimate of lip shape parameter, which can refrain iteration from converging to local minima. The experiments have been performed for many images, and show very encouraging result.

Optimization of an electric machine is mainly a nonlinear multi-modal problem. For the optimization of the multi-modal problem, many function calls are required with much consumption of time. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm in which function calls are less than conventional methods. Specifically, the proposed method uses the kriging metamodel and the fill-blank technique to find an approximated solution in a whole problem region. To increase the convergence speed in local peaks, a parallel gradient assisted simplex method is proposed and combined with the kriging meta-model. The correctness and usefulness of the proposed hybrid algorithm is verified through a mathematical test function and applied into the practical optimization as the cogging torque minimization for an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine.

This paper introduces a novel optimization technique based on gravitational search algorithm (GSA) for numerical optimization and multi-objective optimization of foundation. In the proposed method, a chaotic time varying system is applied into the position updating equation to increase the global exploration ability and accurate local exploitation of the original algorithm. The new algorithm called global-local GSA (GLGSA) is applied for optimization of some well-known mathematical benchmark functions as well as two design examples of spread foundation. In the foundation optimization, two objective functions include total cost and $CO_2$ emissions of the foundation subjected to geotechnical and structural requirements are considered. From environmental point of view, minimization of embedded $CO_2$ emissions that quantifies the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the use of materials seems necessary to include in the design criteria. The experimental results demonstrate that, the proposed GLGSA remarkably improves the accuracy, stability and efficiency of the original algorithm.
