  • In this paper, we present an improved image formation model and propose a color image enhancement based on the model. In the presented image formation model, an input image is represented as a product of global illumination, local illumination, and reflectance. In the proposed color image enhancement, an input RGB color image is converted into an HSV color image. Under the assumption of white-light illumination, the H and S component images are remained as they are and the V component image only is enhanced based on the image formation model. The global illumination is estimated by applying a linear LPF with wide support region to the input V component image and the local illumination by applying a JND (just noticeable difference)-based nonlinear LPF with narrow support region to the processed image, where the estimated global illumination is eliminated from the input V component image. The reflectance is estimated by dividing the input V component image by the estimated global and local illuminations. After performing the gamma correction on the three estimated components, the output V component image is obtained from their product. Histogram modeling is next executed such that the final output V component image is obtained. Finally an output RGB color image is obtained from the H and S component images of the input color image and the final output V component image. Experimental results for the test image DB built with color images downloaded from NASA homepage and MPEG-7 CCD color images show that the proposed method gives output color images of very well-increased global and local contrast without halo effect and color shift.

  • A novel multifocus image fusion algorithm based on NSCT is proposed in this paper. In order to not only attain the image focusing properties and more visual information in the fused image, but also sensitive to the human visual perception, a local multidirection variance (LEOV) fusion rule is proposed for lowpass subband coefficient. In order to introduce more visual saliency, a modified local contrast is defined. In addition, according to the feature of distribution of highpass subband coefficients, a direction vector is proposed to constrain the modified local contrast and construct the new fusion rule for highpass subband coefficients selection The NSCT is a flexible multiscale, multidirection, and shift-invariant tool for image decomposition, which can be implemented via the atrous algorithm. The proposed fusion algorithm based on NSCT not only can prevent artifacts and erroneous from introducing into the fused image, but also can eliminate 'block effect' and 'frequency aliasing' phenomenon. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieved better fusion results than wavelet-based and CT-based fusion method in contrast and clarity.

  • Recently, the method based on fractional order partial differential equation has been used in image processing. Usually, the optional order of fractional differentiation is determined by a lot of experiments. In this paper, a denoising model is proposed based on adaptive fractional order anisotropic diffusion. In the proposed model, the complexity of the local image texture is reflected by the local variance, and the order of the fractional differentiation is determined adaptively. In the process of the adaptive fractional order model, the discrete Fourier transform is applied to compute the fractional order difference as well as the dynamic evolution process. Experimental results show that the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index measurement (SSIM) of the proposed image denoising algorithm is better than that of other some algorithms. The proposed algorithm not only can keep the detailed image information and edge information, but also obtain a good visual effect.

  • In this paper, we investigate an enhancement method for Western epigraphic images, which is based on local statistics. Image data is partitioned into two regions, background and information. Statistical and functional analyses are proceeded for image modeling. The Western epigraphic images, for the most part, have shown the Gaussian distribution. It is clarified that each region can be differentiated statistically. The local normalization process algorithm is designed on this model. The parameter is extracted and it‘s properties are verified with the size of moving window. The spatial gray-level distribution is modified and regions are differentiated by adjusting parameter and the size of moving window. Local statistics are utilized for realization of the enhancement, so that difference between regions can be enhanced and noise or speckles of region can be smoothed. Experimental results are presented to show the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the conventional methods.

  • Local histogram equalization is one of the most popular ways of enhancing the local brightness features of an input image. However, local histogram equalization reveals some problems. First, undesired artifacts are produced by over-enhancing the local features. Second, the enhancement of local features does not always result in global contrast enhancement. To cope with these problems, we propose an illumination driven local histogram equalization method. First, to estimate the illumination information, the proposed method combines the input image and the blurred image produced through the process of the down-sampling and the up-sampling. Next, the proposed method adaptively adjusts the mapping function estimated by the local histogram equalization using the information of the illumination. As a result, the proposed illumination information driven local histogram equalization method simultaneously enhances the global and the local contrast levels while preventing any local artifacts. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional methods on objective and subjective criteria.

  • In this paper, we propose an object based 2D image to 3D conversion algorithm by using motion estimation, color labeling and non-local mean filtering methods. In the proposed algorithm, we first extract the motion vector of each object by estimating the motion between frames and then segment a given image frame with color labeling method. Then, combining the results of motion estimation and color labeling, we extract object regions and assign an exact depth value to each object to generate the right image. While generating the right image, occlusion regions occur but they are effectively recovered by using non-local mean filter. Through the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed algorithm performs much better than conventional conversion scheme by removing the eye fatigue effectively.

  • This paper proposed a Systolic Arrays architecture for computing edge detection on images. It is very difficult to be processed images to real time because of operations of local operators. Local operators for computing edge detection are to be used in many image processing tasks, involve replacing each pixel in an image with a value computed within a local neighborhood of that pixel. Computing such operators at the video rate requires a computing power which is not provided by conventional computer. Through computationally expensive, it is highly regular. Thus, this paper presents a systolic arrays for tasks such as edge detection and laplacian, which are defined in terms of local operators.

  • In this paper, we propose a spatially adaptive image restoration algorithm using local statistics. The local mean, variance, and maximum values are utilized to constrain the solution space, and these parameters are computed at each iteration step using partially restored image. A parameter defined by the user determines the degree of local smoothness imposed on the solution. The resulting iterative algorithm exhibits increased convergence speed when compared to the non-adaptive algorithm. In addition, a smooth solution with a controlled degree of smoothness is obtained. Experimental results demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, the contrast enhancement method of thermal image is proposed and it is the plateau equalization algorithm using local histogram for the real time display of infrared imagery. Through hardware implementing, its practicality and adequacy are proved. Examinations are executed to verify the effect of contrast enhancement by bright control and contrast control automatic to the plateau value in the manual mode, and that verified the effect of contrast enhancement in the automatic mode and the practicality in the real system. According to the experiment results, the proposed "the application of local histogram and plateau equalization algorithm for contrast enhancement of real time thermal image"in this dissertation is the verified method for the thermal imaging contrast enhancement.

  • Few-shot learning is a sub-area of machine learning problems, which aims to classify target images that only contain a few labeled samples for training. As a representative few-shot learning method, the Prototypical network has been received much attention due to its simplicity and promising results. However, the Prototypical network uses the sample mean of samples from the same class as the prototypes of that class, which easily results in learning uncharacteristic features in the low-data scenery. In this study, we propose to use local descriptors (i.e., patches along the channel within feature maps) from the same class to explicitly obtain more representative prototypes for Prototypical Network so that significant intra-class feature information can be maintained and thus improving the classification performance on few-shot learning tasks. Experimental results on various benchmark datasets including mini-ImageNet, CUB-200-2011, and tiered-ImageNet show that the proposed method can learn more discriminative intra-class features by the local descriptors and obtain more generic prototype representations under the few-shot setting.
