  • The bicycle is one of the most important eco-friendly transport methods which can mitigate global warming. The portability of a bike on public transportation systems is essential for the wide spread use of bicycles by people in urban environments. In this study, a lightweight urban folding bike was developed with careful consideration of the association with public transport. A folding frame using a moving slide link mechanism made from AL6061 is proposed. Numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate structural safety of the bike in both vertical and pedal loading tests. The proposed urban folding bicycle weights only 10kg and summation of its width, length, and height in the folded configuration is under 158cm.

  • The coupled model with hydrogen transport and elasto-plasticity behavior was introduced. In this paper, the effective factor of the hydrogen diffusion equation has been described. To assess the effective factor, finite element (FE) analyses including hydrogen transport and mechanical loading for boundary layer specimens with low-strength steel properties are carried out. The results of the FE analyses are compared with those from previous studies conducted by Taha and Sofronis (2001).

  • The objective of the present study was to perform failure analysis of double-layered bellow (expansion joint), a core part of stress reliever, used to relieve axial stresses induced by thermal expansion of heat-transport pipes in a district heating system. The bellow underwent tensile or compressive stresses due to its structure in terms of position. A leaked position sufferred a fatigue with a tensile component for decades. A cracked bellow contained a higher fraction of martensitic phase because of manufacturing and usage histories, which induced more brittleness on the component. Inclusions in the inner layer of the bellow acted as a site of stress concentration, from which cracks initiated and then propagated along the hoop direction from the inner surface of the inner layer under fatigue loading conditions. As the crack reached critical thickness, the crack propagated to the outer surface at a higher rate, resulting in leakage of the stress reliever.

  • In this study, road transportation tests were conducted with surrogate fuel assemblies under normal conditions of transport to evaluate the vibration and shock load characteristics of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). The overall test data analysis was conducted based on the measured acceleration and strain data obtained from the speed bump, lane-change, deceleration, obstacle avoidance, and circular tests. Furthermore, representative shock response spectrums and power spectral densities of each test mode were acquired. Amplification or attenuation characteristics were investigated according to the load transfer path. The load attenuated significantly as it transferred from the trailer to the cask. By contrast, the load amplified as it transferred from the cask to the surrogate SNF assembly. The fuel loading location on the cask disk assembly did not exhibit a significant influence on the strain measured from the fuel rods. The principal strain was in the vertical direction, and relatively large strain values were obtained in spans with large spacing between spacer grids. The influence of the lateral location of fuel rods was also investigated. The fuel rods located at the side exhibited relatively large strain values than those located at the center. Based on the strain data obtained from the test results, a hypothetical road transportation scenario was established. A fatigue evaluation of the SNF rod was performed based on this scenario. The evaluation results indicate that no fatigue damage occurred on the fuel rods.

  • Columnar aerosol properties retrieved from solar radiation were investigated at the Yongin (YGN) SKYNET site over seven years from October 2008 to October 2015. Hourly averages were calculated when the data were available, and back trajectories were calculated to examine the effects of regional transport. Data recovery rate was low at 6.6%, primarily because solar radiation was measured only under daytime clear-sky conditions. Mean values of the fine-mode volume fraction (FMVF) as well as its seasonal variation were similar to those of $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ although the coarse-mode fraction of column aerosols tended to be slightly larger. The values of single scattering albedo (SSA) and FMVF were lower in spring due to the effects of mineral dust, and higher in summer due to secondarily-formed inorganic ions. Back trajectories were grouped into five clusters according to the directions of transport paths. Aerosol loading was highest for Cluster 2 from the northwest, but SSA and FMVF were not particularly high or low because aerosols were composed of various materials with different properties. Aerosol loading was lowest for Cluster 5 from the Pacific Ocean passing through the south end of Japan, whose SSA and FMVF were highest as secondarily-formed inorganic ions were mixed.

  • The Heat Transport system loop stability of CANDU-6 reactor using the CANFLEX fuel bundle was studied. The Thermal-hydraulic behavior of CANFLEX fuel bundle is similar to the conventional 37-element fuel bundle since the reactor power and the frictional pressure drop through the fuel channel is almost the same each other, Mounter the CANFLEX fuel bundle gives higher critical channel power and more homogeneous enthalpy distributions in the subchannels than 37-element fuel bundle. The SOPHT modelling or the CANFLEX fuel bundle and the Reactor outlet Header(ROH) interconnection line was made and the stability analysis response of Wolsong-1 reactor with CANFLEX fuel bundle was obtained. Without the ROH interconnection line the Heat Transport system loop using 43-element fuel bundle is unstable like the current 37-element fuel bundle. With the ROH interconnection line, however, the Heat Transport system is stable within $\pm$1% of nominal flow. In the Heat Transport system loop stability point of view for Wolsong-1 plant therefore, the CANFLEX fuel loading is considered to be acceptable.

  • A CHS(Container Handling System) is a system to load and to unload ISO 2000 or ISO 4000 standard containers which is widely used for various industrial transport purpose. A new light type of CHS is introduced in this paper, in order to reduce weight of cargos and to give the convenience in cargo loading and unloading without additional lifting equipments. The structural models of this system are created to assemble the smooth integration of system and to interface the each composing units with the specification of truck chassis to be mounted. These models are applied to find the suitable design parameters under the condition of force restrictions of each units. Finally, the stability of this system are investigated by analyzing the dynamic simulation using Visual NASTRAN 4D, and it could be recommend the good design parameters for the manufacturing purpose.

  • Despite the availability of other transport methods such as land and air transportations, marine transportation is the most preferred and widely used transportation method in the world because of its economical advantages. In service, ships experience cyclic loading. Hence, it can be said that fatigue fracture, which occurs due to cyclic loading, is one of the most critical failure modes for vessels. Accordingly, this makes fatigue failure prevention an important design requirement in naval architecture. In general, a ship structure contains many structural components. Because of this, structural modeling typically relies on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques. It is possible to increase fatigue performance of the ship structures by using FEA in computer aided engineering environment. Even if literature papers as well as rules of classification societies are available to assess effect of fatigue cracks onto the whole ship structure, analytical studies are relatively scarce because of the difficulties of modeling the whole structure and obtaining reliable fatigue life predictions. As a consequence, the objective of this study is to improve fatigue strength of a mercantile vessel against fatigue loads via analytical method. For this purpose, the fatigue life of the mercantile vessel has been investigated. Two different type of fatigue assessment models, namely Coffin-Manson and Morrow Mean stress approaches, were used and the results were compared. In order to accurately determine the fatigue life of the ship, a nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted considering plastic deformations and residual stresses. The results of this study will provide the designer with some guidelines in designing mercantile vessels.

  • A new block system - MAS (Moving Autoblock System) whose efficiency is higher than FAS(Fixed Autoblock System) in the loading capacity is required to accomodate the increasing transport volume. That MAS has higher efficiency has already been verified through various studies, especially in a line with different types of travelling trains. The efficiency of MAS for Korean high speed line with two different train model is analyzed by computer simulation. The results show that MAS is more efficient than FAS in the loading capacity.

  • In 2017, multimodal transportation tests for evaluating road, sea, and rail transport were performed by research institutes in the US, Spain, and the Republic of Korea. In this study, acceleration and strain data determined through road and sea tests were analyzed. It was investigated whether the load generated for each transport mode was amplified or attenuated according to the load transfer path. From the results, it was confirmed that the load transfer characteristics differed according to the transportation mode and loading path. The effects of strain determined through each test on the structural integrity of the spent nuclear fuel were also investigated. It was found that the magnitude of the measured strain had a negligible effect on the structural integrity of the spent nuclear fuel, considering its fatigue strength. The results for the acceleration and strain data analyses obtained in this study will be useful for scheduled domestic transportation tests under normal transport conditions.
