Numerical Analysis on Posterior Prosthesis of Implant Temporary Teeth Combination Bridge (임플란트 임시치아 결합형 브리지의 구치부 보철물에 대한 수치해석)

  • This research examined an immediate loading capable of providing a masticatory function and financial affordability while satisfying every requirement of a useful immediate loading. In this research, numerical value analysis was performed on couple-type posterior teeth implants developed by making up for the problems of extant implants. As a result of examining the effects of external impacts on extant implants and their deformation, relatively lager deformations separated from a molar were found concerning molar deformation implant with the maximum deformation level being approximately 1.657mm. In this research, the improved implant showed much improvement in terms of impact analysis in its deformation dispersion status after unloading the impulsive load from a punch. As for the case of hepf, about 1.657mm occurred but the improved model showed about 0.9217mm, exhibiting 55.6% advancement.

Effects of Sinusoidal Vibration Fatigue on Compression Strength of Corrugated Fiberboard Container for Packaging of Fruits

  • The compression strength of corrugated fiberboard containers for packaging the agricultural products rapidly decreases because of various environmental conditions during distribution of unitized products. Among various environmental conditions, the main factors affecting the compression strength of corrugated fiberboard are absorption of moisture, long-term accumulative load, and fatigue caused by shock and vibration. An estimated rate of damage for fruit during distribution is about 30~40% owing to the shock and vibration. This study was carried out to characterize the durability of corrugated fiberboard containers for packaging the fruits and vegetables under simulated transportation environment. After the packaging freight was vibrated at various experimental conditions, the compression test for the packaging was performed. The compression strength of corrugated fiberboard containers decreased with loading weight and vibration time. The multiple nonlinear regression equation ($R^2$ = 0.9198) for predicting the decreasing rate of compression strength of corrugated fiberboard containers were developed using four independent variables such as input acceleration level, input frequency, loading weight and vibration time.

  • Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) composite films filled with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN) were prepared in this study. In order to investigate mechanical and thermal properties of HPC/TOCN composite films, tensile strength and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) wer performed. As the loading level of TOCN increased, the tensile strength and modulus increased significantly. However, thermal stability of HPC/TOCN composite films was not related to the loading levels of the TOCN.

Constitutive Modeling of Confined Concrete under Concentric Loading

  • The inelastic behavior of a reinforced concrete columns is influenced by a number of factors : 1) level of axial load, 2) tie spacing, 3) volumetric ratio of lateral steel, 4) concrete strength, 5) distribution of longitudinal steel, 6) strength of lateral steel, 7) cover thickness, 8) configuration of lateral steel, 9) strain gradient, 10) strain rate, 11) the effectively confined concrete core area, and 12) amount of longitudinal steel. A new constitutive model of a confined concrete is suggested in order to investigate the nonlinear behavior of the reinforced concrete columns under concentric loading. The developed constitutive model for the confined concrete takes into account the effects of effectively confined area as well as the horizontal and longitudinal distributions of the confining pressures. None of the existing models incorporated these two main effects at the same time. A total of different six constitutive models for the behavior of the confined concrete under concentric compression were compared with the sixty-one test results reported by different researchers. The superiority of the developed model in its accuracy is demonstrated by evaluating the error function, which compares the weighted averages for the sum of squared relative differences in peak compressive strength and corresponding strain, stress at strain equal to 0.015, and total area under stress-strain curve up to strain equal to 0.015.

  • Reinforced polyurethane foam (RPUF) is one of the important materials of Mark III type insulation systems used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo containment systems. However, RPUF is the most difficult material to use with regard to its safety assessment, because there is little public and reliable data on its mechanical properties, and even some public data show relatively large differences. In this study, to investigate the structural response of the system under compressive loads such as sloshing action, time-dependent characteristics of RPUF were examined. A series of compressive load tests of the insulation system including RPUF under various temperature conditions was carried out using specimens with rectangular section. As a result, the relationship between deformation of RPUF and time is linear and dependent on the loading rate, so the concept of strain rate could be applied to the analysis of the insulation system. Also, we found that the spring constant tends to converge to a value as the loading rate increases and that the convergence level is dependent on temperature.

  • A bioartificial liver (BAL) is a medical device entrapping living hepatocytes or immortalized cells derived from hepatocytes. Many efforts have already been made to maintain the functions of the hepatocytes in a BAL device over a long term. However, there is still some uncertainty as to their efficacy. and their limitations are unclear. Therefore, it is important to quantitatively evaluate the metabolic functions of a BAL. In previous studies on in vitro BAL devices, two test methods, an initial bolus loading and constant-rate infusion plus initial bolus loading, were theoretically carried out to obtain physiologic data on drugs. However, in the current study, the same two methods were used as a perfusion model and derived the same clearance characterized by an interrelationship between the perfusate flow rate and intrinsic clearance. The interrelationship indicated that the CL increased with an increasing perfusate flow rate and approached its maximum value, i.e. intrinsic clearance. In addition, to set up an in vivo BAL system, the toxic plateau levels in the BAL system were calculated for both series and parallel circuit models. The series model had a lower plateau level than the parellel model. The difference in the toxic plateau levels between the parallel and series models increased with an increasing number of BAL cartridges.

A new damage index for reinforced concrete structures

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) structures are likely to experience damage when subjected to earthquakes. Damage index (DI) has been recognised as an advanced tool of quantitatively expressing the extent of damage in such structures. Last 30 years have seen many concepts for DI proposed in order to calibrate the observed levels of damage. The current research briefly reviews all available concepts and investigates their relative merits and limitations with a view to proposing a new concept based on residual deformation. Currently available DIs are classified into two broad categories - non-cumulative DI and cumulative DI. Non-cumulative DIs do not include the effects of cyclic loading, whilst the cumulative concepts produce more rational indication of the level of damage in case of earthquake excitations. Ideally, a DI should vary within a scale of 0 to 1 with 0 representing the state of elastic response, and 1 referring to the state of total collapse. Some of the available DIs do not satisfy these criteria. A new DI based on energy is proposed herein and its performances, both for static and for cyclic loadings, are compared with those obtained using the most widely accepted DI in literature. The proposed DI demonstrates a rational way to predict the extent of damage for a number of case studies. More research is encouraged to address some identified issues.

Probabilistic Distributions of Fatigue Life of Concrete Subjected to Flexural Loading (콘크리트 휨피로수명의 확률분포)

  • The distributions of fatigue life of concrete for various applied fatigue stress levels are investigated. The concrete beam specimens are tested in four-point flexural loading conditions. Three different levels of applied fatigue stresses are considered. They are 85%. 75%. 65%, respectively, of the static flexural strength of concrete. The present study indicates that the shapes of the probability distribution of fatigue lives are rather different for different levels of applied fatigue stress. This necessitates the consideration of the effects of applied fatigue stress levels on fatigue life distributions of concrete in order to conduct a realistic fatigue reliability analysis. The graphical method, the method of moments, and the method of maximum likelihood estimation are used to evaluate the distribution parameters of fatigue lives. It was found that the shape parameter of Weibull distribution for the fatigue life of concrete ranges from 2.0 to 4.0 according to the level of applied fatigue stress.

  • A Rubber mount is widely used for mechanical parts or engineering materials. Especially, it plays an important role in reducing mechanical vibration due to cyclic loading. But, rubber mount is damaged due to the cyclic loading and resonance. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate evaluation of fatigue life considering vibration characteristics for rubber. In this study, a vibration fatigue analysis was performed and based on Power Spectral Density(PSD) and the stress-life curve and a result of frequency response analysis in the finite element method. The measured load history in experiment was transformed to PSD curve. The stress-life curve was obtained by nonlinear static analysis and fatigue test. In addition, frequency response analysis was conducted for mechanical part. In order to evaluate fatigue life of rubber mount, vibration fatigue test was conducted at the constant acceleration-level as well. Fatigue life was determined when the load capacity is reduced to 60% of its initial value. As a result, predicted fatigue life of rubber mount agreed fairly well with the experimental fatigue life.

A study of aerodynamic pressures on elevated houses

  • In coastal residential communities, especially along the coastline, flooding is a frequent natural hazard that impacts the area. To reduce the adverse effects of flooding, it is recommended to elevate coastal buildings to a certain safe level. However, post storm damage assessment has revealed severe damages sustained by elevated buildings' components such as roofs, walls, and floors. By elevating a structure and creating air gap underneath the floor, the wind velocity increases and the aerodynamics change. This results in varying wind loading and pressure distribution that are different from their slab on grade counterparts. To fill the current knowledge gap, a large-scale aerodynamic wind testing was conducted at the Wall of Wind experimental facility to evaluate the wind pressure distribution over the surfaces of a low-rise gable roof single-story elevated house. The study considered three different stilt heights. This paper presents the observed changes in local and area averaged peak pressure coefficients for the building surfaces of the studied cases. The aerodynamics of the elevated structures are explained. Comparisons are done with ASCE 7-16 and AS/NZS 1170.2 wind loading standards. For the floor surface, the study suggests a wind pressure zoning and pressure coefficients for each stilt height.
