  • Anionic acrylic resin utilizing macromer(TBMA-g-MMA) copolymer was synthesized by preparing (TBMA) macromer using anionic living polymerization, followed by graft copolymerization with MMA macromer. To control the anionic site content in graft copolymer, the relative composition((TBMA) macromer/MMA ratio) of the graft copolymer was controlled at 7/3, 10/90, 15/85, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, 50/50 in weight content. In the course of anionic living polymerization of(TBMA) macromer, broad molecular weight distribution (1.4~1.5) was obtained by using n-butyllithium-diphenyethylene initiatior system at $-78^{\circ}C$. To introduce the double bond at the end of chain in termination step, methacryloyl chloride was reacted after insertion of benzaldehyde as capping material. Moreover, TBMA parts in graft copolymer were hydrolyzed in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid catalyst, and neutralization of graft copolymer with triethylamine was granted acrylic resin to anionic site. Molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of(TBMA) macromer were determined by GPC, and the hydrolysis of TBMA with neutralization of acrylic resin were determined by IR and NMR. From water dispersion and stability point of view, stable dispersion state appeared at low molecular weight(TBMA) macromer with a small TBMA content as a result of scrutiny about the relation to TBMA content and branch length for(TBMA) macromer molecular weight in graft copolymer.

  • The synthesis of well-defined dendrons based on aliphatic polyether dendritic cores and glassy polystyrene peripheries is described. The synthetic route involves a combination of living anionic polymerization and a stepwise convergent method consisting of iterative Williamson etherification and hydroboration/oxidation reactions. On the basis of molecular weight, as characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), the first generation dendron (Generation-1) shows a random coil conformation like a linear polystyrene, while higher generations (Generation-2 and 3) reveal globular forms in solution.

  • The combination of living anionic and coordination polymerization techniques enabled to synthesize the polystyrene-b-polyisoprene-b-poly (butyl isocyanate) triblock polymers. Their microphase-separated structures were zig-zag structures for high ${\phi}_{PIC}$ samples, and hockey-puck structures were also observed. The phase diagram for PSt-b-PIp-b-PIC rod-coil polymers was different from that for PS-PBd-PMMA triblock polymers, and it was found that ${\phi}_{PIC}$ was the important factor to determine the microphase-separated structures.

  • In general, the synthesis of poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT)-based block copolymers requires at least a 4-5 step process. To control the molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and block ratio, the reaction conversion and time should be monitored. In addition, the reaction scale usually limited to several mg to g was difficult to increase due to the limitations of living radical polymerizations. In this study, we synthesized P3HT-b-poly(4-vinylprydine) (P3HT-b-P4VP) with a final product quantity of > 19 g via a 2-step synthetic method with an anionic polymerization. In this method, the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of P3HT-b-P4VP can be well controlled without monitoring the reaction conversion. We also studied physical properties of P3HT-b-P4VP depending on different solvent systems, which were investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy.

  • Helical polymers like polyisocyanates with single screw sense are essential to exhibit sophisticated functions like molecular recognition, self-replication, chirality memory and catalytic activity. One approach that has not been explored is the effect on handedness of the polyisocyanates through end-capping with a chiral residue. Induction of chirality in poly(n-hexyl isocyanate) was studied by end-capping with chiral (R and S) 2-bromo-3-methylbutyryl chloride(R-BMBC and S-BMBC). We have shown that a control over living anionic polymerization of HIC by using a suitable initiator affords an opportunity to introduce chiral end-groups with 100% yield and in high purity. This has resulted in helicity induction through extended lengths several orders of magnitude.
