  • The peony patterns represent one of decorative designs with their fortunate and auspicious implications. The pattern emerged first from T'ang Dynasty, flourished during the periods of Sung and $Y\ddot{u}an$ in China, and then was introduced to Korea and Japan. For the purpose of systematizing the development of the pattern, this thesis is about the process of formation and various changes in peony patterns. It examines in general the literatures and the craft works, such as textiles, lacquer wares, chinas and porcelains, and metals. The characteristics of peony patterns are dealt respectively in this study about T'ang, Sung, $Y\ddot{u}an$, Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties of China, Shila, Korea, Chosun, of Korea, and Nara, Haian, Kamakura, Muromachi, MomoYama, Aedo of Japan.

  • A study focused on the implication of the blue and black colors in Korean traditional costume is presented. The presented study shows that the blue color in most of literatures regarding Korean traditional costume implies not only green and blue colors, but also dark blue and black colors. In a broad sense, the blue color implies a color category which includes green, indigo, blue, dark blue and black. On the other hand, the color includes blue, dark blue and black in a narrow sense. The rotor black, however, should not be interpreted as blue and dark blue because it has two bypes of black colors with and without reddish tone. Four reasons that the color blue was understood as the color black were discussed in this paper. The fundamental reason was that the blue color looked like black because of dark shadows. Secondly, there was a difference of color awareness between the color blue in Korea and in China. Thirdly, there was a color difference related to the type of textiles. Finally, other substitutes were used because of the lack of blue dyes.

  • This is a case report of spontaneous regression of elevated pulmonary vascular resistance after the age of 6 years in a patient with partial endocardial cushion defect. The patient was first evaluated and considered to be highly risky for surgical correction because of obstructive type of pulmonary hypertension and presisting congestive heart failure at the age of 6 years, during which time medical treatment for congestive heart failure and sufferring from respiratory infection were only provided. Finally the patient was reevaluated at the age of 16 years, in January of 1980 when cardiac catheterization was revealed markedly reduced pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary hypertension as well. The patient was operated upon with uneventful postoperative recovery. So we report this case with review of the literatures regarding natural history regarding natural history of partial endocardial cushion defect.

  • Most cases of plasma-cell granuloma occur in adult skeleton system. They usually present as a single lesion, but multiple lesions are not uncommon. Roentgenographically, the lesions are lytic, sclerotic or mixed, but in the majority there is some degree of sclerosis. No specific etiologic agent is known, but it is postulated that the reaction may be associated with a variety of organisms of low-grade virulence. Certain organisms have long been known to produce predominantly plasmacytic infiltrate, notably spirochetes, mycobacteria and some exotic viruses. It is most important, however, that this entity, plasma-cell granuloma, be distinguished from multiple myeloma so those potentially life-threatening chemotherapeutic agents are not prescribed. Histologically, aggregates of chronic inflammatory cells are intermingled with the meets of plasma cells, and note the markedly thickened bone trabeculae in surrounding bone. We experienced a case of plasma-cell granuloma of right 7th. rib, occurring in 32 year old male and reported it with review of literatures.

  • The juxtaposition of atrial appendage may possibly be diagnosed by angiography recently, and it is widely regarded as an ominous sign of severe cyanotic congenital heart disease. However, it is apparently rare congenital cardiac anomaly in which the atrial appendages lie side by side, both to the left or right of the great arteries, known as left or right juxtaposition of the atrial appendages. Juxtaposition of the atrial appendages has no functional significance, since it does not, itself, cause any hemodynamic disturbance. But it`s presence always indicates the coexistence of other major cardiac anomalies. In review of literatures TGA and VSD are invariable present, and ASD is common. Other anomalies, such as, tricuspid atresia, pulmonary outflow that, obstruction bicuspid pulmonic valve, persistent SVC etc. are relatively high incidence. In this report, we present one case of 6 year old female child having left juxtaposition of atrial appendage combined with TGA [D-looping, D-transposition], TAPVD, large ASD, small VSD, and vertical vein.

  • Pulmonary aspergillosis is the most common disease of fungal infection and has lower infectivity. Pulmonary asergillosis is classified by aspergilloma, bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, necrotic and invasive aspergillosis. Invasive aspergillosis is found in immune compromised host, immunosuppressive treatment after organ transplantation, anticancerous chemotherapy, blood abnormality, AIDS patients etc. We reported a case of invasive aspergillosis in an immunocompetent host, with review of literatures.

  • Esophageal foreign bodies are common problems in the part of otolaryngology department, and may cause severe complications such as esophageal ulceration, esophageal perforation, periesophagitis, tracheoesophageal fisula, pneumothorax and pyothorax. Therefore, early diagnosis and intervention is needed to reduce morbidity and motality. But, calcification of the laryngeal cartilages may masquerade as foreign body in some patients with a history of foreign body ingestion. Recently, We experienced a case of calcification of thyroid cartilage which was misunderstood as an esophageal foreign body and report this case with a review of literatures.

  • Treatment options for anastomotic recurrence occurring after Ivor Lewis operation are limited. Reoperation for resection can be technically challenging and several reports suggest a potential survival benefit from re-resection. Specific care must be taken to avoid compromise of the previously transposed conduit to not endanger its vascular supply and the recurrent nerves in either the chest or neck. We report our surgical experience of a case of esophagogastric anastomotic site recurrence occurring after Ivor Lewis operation with review of literatures.

  • Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a rare proliferating process of the synovium, tendon sheaths and bursae usually affecting the bone and joints. The disease can be localized or diffuse. Patients with this condition typically present with symptoms of mild discomfort and associated swelling of the involved joint. However, the spectrum of presentations is broad. Diagnosis of Pigmented villonodular synovitis can be clinically difficult, and plain radiographs are usually nonspecific. Magnetic resonance imaging is a highly diagnostic modality in characterizing pigmented villonodular synovitis when it contains hemosiderin deposits exhibiting low signal intensity on all pulse sequences. Magnetic resonance imaging is recommended for accurate preoperative staging of the disease and for follow up after treatment. I report a case of pigmented nodular synovitis in the knee joint, with review of literatures.
