  • The spherically-symmetric burning of an isolated droplet is a dynamic problem that involves the coupling of chemical reactions and multi-phase flow with phase change. For the improved understanding of these phenomena, this paper presents the numerical results on the n-heptane droplet combustion conducted at a 1 atm ambient pressure in three different initial droplet diameter ($d_0$). The main purpose of this study is to provide basic information of droplet burning, extinction and flame behavior of n-heptane and improve the ability of theoretical prediction of these phenomena. To achieve these, the numerical analysis was conducted in terms of normalized droplet diameter ($d/d_0$), flame diameter ($d_f$) and flame standoff ratio (FSR) under the assumptions that the droplet combustion can be described by both the quasi-steady behavior for the region between the droplet surface and the flame interface and the transient behavior for the region between the flame interface and ambient surrounding.

  • The turbopump inducer cavitation is very important for the success of a liquid rocket engine. In this study, the performance test and cavitation performance test were carried out at various rotational speeds with two inducers of different diameter. The rotational speed was varied by 4000, 6000, and 8000 rpm, and the size effect was tested for the normal inducer and twice-enlarged one. The hydraulic performance results showed that the similarity was satisfied over the entire test range of the present study. The blade thickness effect was examined and showed that the increased blade thickness resulted in decreased efficiency and worse cavitation performance for the large tip clearance. The cavitation performance test results showed that the breakdown NPSH increased as the flow coefficient, and was not affected by the rotational speed.

In this study the performance test and cavitation performance test were carried out at various rotational speed with two different diameter inducers. The rotational speed were varied 4000, 6000, 8000 rpm and the variation to the diameter of an inducer were taken as design size and 2 times enlarged size. The major results of the present study were as follows. 1. The hydraulic performance results showed that the similarity was met over the entire test range of the present study. 2. The blade thickness effect was examined and showed that the increased blade thickness resulted in decreased efficiency and worse cavitation performance for large tip clearance. 3. • Bubble rising phenomenon is widely founded in many industrial applications such as a stream generator in power plant. Many experimental and numerical researches have been already performed to predict dynamic behavior of the bubble rising process. Recently numerical approaches are getting popular since it can offer much detailed information which is almost impossible to obtain from the experiments. Rising bubble could penetrate through the top free surface which makes the problem much more complicate in addition to the phase changing effect even with latest numerical techniques. In this paper, the top free surface effect on rising bubble has been investigated. The gas-liquid interface was explicitly tracked using high-order Level Contour Reconstruction Method(LCRM) which is a hybridization of Front-Tracking and Level-Set method. Break-up behavior of rising bubble at free surface showed different characteristics with initial diameter of bubble.

  • A newly designed mass-detecting capillary viscometer uses a novel concept to continuously measure non-Newtonian fluids viscosity over a range of shear rates. A single measurement of liquid-mass variation with time replaces the now rate and pressure drop measurements that are usually required by capillary tube viscometers. Using a load cell and a capillary, we measured change in the mass flow rate through a capillary tube with respect to the time, m(t), from which viscosity and shear rate were mathematically calculated. For aqueous polymer solutions, excellent agreement was found between the results from the mass-detecting capillary viscometer and those from a commercially available rotating viscometer. This new method overcomes the drawbacks of conventional capillary viscometers meassuring non-Newtonian fluid viscosity. First, the mass-detecting capillary viscometer can accurately and consistently measure non -Newtonian viscosity over a wide range of shear rate extending as low as 1 s$\^$-1/. Second, this design provides simplicity (i. e., ease of operation, no moving parts), and low cost.

  • Steam injection heater is the most widely used method for fresh water generator throughout industry. This method is often chosen because of its simplicity. The steam bubbles condense and give up their heat to the surrounding liquid. Experimental study on steam injection heater has been performed in order to find the effect of major parameter. And conservation equation and Bernoulli obstruction theory are used for numerical simulation model of vapor flow-rate. Qualitative comparisons between simulations and measurements show a good agreement and the simulation models are thereby verified.

  • In the present work, a series of numerical calculations have been conducted on the cooling of a hot surface using an air/water mist jet. In some cooling processes, such as in the glass-tempering process, direct contact between the cold water drops and the hot surface should be avoided, because this may cause surface cracks due to the sharp temperature gradients. Thus, the main focus of this study is finding the appropriate operating conditions for maximum cooling without direct contact between the drops and the surface. A series of numerical experiments have been performed, and, at the same time, those results were compared with those of the previous experiments for verification purposes. The effects of droplet impinging velocity, hot plate temperature, and liquid loading ratio for mono-dispersed drops of various sizes were studied in detail.

  • Evaluation of turbulence models is performed for a better prediction of thermal stratification in an upper plenum of a liquid metal reactor by applying them to the experiment conducted at JNC. The turbulence models tested in the present study are the two-layer model, the $\kappa-\omega$ model, the v2-f model and the low-Reynolds number differential stress-flux model. When the algebraic flux model or differential flux model are used for treating the turbulent heat flux, there exist little differences between turbulence models in predicting the temporal variation of temperature. However, the v2-f model and the low-Reynolds number differential stress-flux model better predict the steep gradient o( temperature at the interface of thermal stratification, and only the v2-f model predicts properly the oscillation of temperature. The LES Is needed for a better prediction of the amplitude and frequency of the temperature fluctuation.

  • The characteristics of thixoforming process can decrease liquid segregation because of the improvement in fluidity in a globular microstructure state and utilizes flow without an air entrapment. Therefore, in order to obtain the sound parts of metal matrix composites by using thixoforming process which is co-existing solidus-liquidus phase, it is very important to obtain a die design, fabrication conditions which affects the uniformity of the solid fraction on unfilling state and various defects throughout the fabricated parts. The die designs and fabrication conditions to obtain the good piston part are proposed for thixogorging process of metal matrix composites.
