  • LCP/PA alloy was prepared by blending poly(${\varepsilon}-caprolactam$) (PA) with liquid crystal polyester, Vectra (LCP) having high elasticity and strength. The alloy prepared amorphous PA with more than 10 parts of thermotropic LCP had poor compatibility. To increase the compatibility of the alloy, compatibilizing agent, poly(glycinylmaleimide-co-methylmetacrylate)[poly(GMI-co-MMA)] copolymer was prepared by copolymerizing N-glycinylmaleimide(GMI) with methylmetacrylate(MMA). And then, it was blended with LCP and PA to produce LCP/PA alloy having an excellent compatibility. The compatibility characteristics of the alloy prepared from LCP and PA using the poly(GMI-co-MMA) was determined by measuring the thermal characteristics of glass transition temperature of nematic LCP, and rheological properties, and also high rate impact and flexual characteristics of the alloy were determined.

  • Immiscible polymer blends containing a liquid crystalline polymer dispersed phase can be described by existing blend theories when the dispersed-phase droplets are large relative to the orientation correlation length ("domain size") of the LCP. There does not appear to be an interfacial contribution to the linear viscoelastic properties of the blend from droplets smaller than the correlation length. Polyester blends, where interfacial interactions occur between the LCP and the matrix, exhibit a reduction in viscosity to below the viscosity of either component at low shear rates, where the droplet morphology is spherical. These anomalies cannot be explained in the context of existing theory.ng theory.

  • Liquid crystalline aromatic polyesters (LCPs) are representative examples of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers, whose structure-property relationships have been the subject of many researches. In this study, we synthesized organo-soluble liquid crystalline aromatic polyesters, and their composites with acetylene-terminated thermoset resins were prepared and characterized. Soluble LCPs were synthesized by employing 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, and 4-aminophenol as monomers via condensation polymerization based on transesterfication and transamidation. Acetylene-terminated thermoset resins were synthesized by the reaction of 4-ethynylaniline with terephthaloyl dichloride, isophthaloyl dichloride or 4,4'-biphenyldicarbonyl dichloride. We prepared the soluble LCP/thermoset composites by solution blending followed by thermal treatment. The thermal stability, thermal expansion coefficient, and dielectric properties of the composite were studied.

  • A thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester (TLCP) containing a side group was, synthesized from ethoxyhydroquinone and bromoterephthalic acid. Intercalation of TLCP in layered clays is accomplished by heating the polymer with hexadecyl ammonium-montmorillonite ($C_{16}$) above melting transition temperature ($T_m$). Liquid crystallinity of the TLCP/$C_{16}$-hybrid was observed up to 6 wt% $C_{16}$-MMT. Some of the $C_{16}$-MMTs in TLCP were highly dispersed in a nanometer scale, but some of them were agglomerated. Thermal and morphological properties of the nanocomposites were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), polarized optical microscope, and electron microscopes (SEM and TEM).

  • Polymer composites based on a thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymer (TLCP) and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) were prepared using a melt blending process. Polymer composites consisting of bulk cheap polyester with a small quantity of expensive TLCP are of interest from a commercial perspective. The interactions between the PBT chains and the flexible poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) units in the TLCP phase resulted in an improvement in the compatibility of PBT/TLCP composites. TLCP droplets deformed and fragmented into smaller droplets in the PBT/TLCP composites, which resulted in TLCP fibrillation through the effective deformation of the TLCP droplets. The nucleation activities of the PBT/TLCP composites increased by adding even a small amount of the TLCP component.

  • A thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP) containing a flexible spacer was synthesized from hydroquinone, p-hydrofybenzoic acid, and 1,6-dibromohexane. Intercalation of TLCP in layered clays is accomplished by heating the polymer with dodecyl ammonium-montmorillonite (C$_{12}$-MMT) above melt transition temperature (T$_{m}$). Liquid crystallinity of the TLCP/C$_{12}$-MMT hybrid was not observed when $C_{12}$-MMT content was above 1 wt%. Some of the $C_{12}$-MMTs in TLCP were highly dispersed in a nanometer scale, but some of them were agglomerated. • Blends of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were prepared by the coprecipitation from a common solvent. The blends were processed through a capillary die at $287^{\circ}C$ to produce a monofilament. Morphology and mechanical, thermal properties of blends and composites were examined by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), tensile test, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Crystallization kinetics of the blends were investigated by the isothermal DSC method. The Avrami analyses were applied to obtain the information on the crystal growth geometry and factors controlling the rate of crystallization. In the blends, liquid crystalline phase did not reveal any significant macrophase separation and thermal degradation at the processing temperature. From scanning electron micrographs of cryogenic fracture surfaces of extruded fibers, the TLCP domains were found to be more or less finely dispersed with $0.1{\mu}m$ to $0.2{\mu}m$ in size. Interfacial adhesion between the TLCP and matrix polymer was excellent. Tensile strength and modulus of TLCP/PET in-situ fiber composites were enhanced with increasing draw ratio and LCP content.

  • A thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) which has flexible butylene/hexylene spacers in the main chain and a triad aromatic ester type mesogenic unit containing a naphthyl group was prepared by solution polycondensation. The in-situ composites based on poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) were prepared and melt spun at different TLCP contents and different draw ratios to produce monofilaments. Blends of the TLCP with PEN were investigated in terms of thermal, mechanical properties and morphology. The TLCP synthesized showed nematic mesophasic behavior and its transition temperature to isotropic melt from mesophase was 249℃. The blends showed well dispersed TLCP phases in the PEN matrix without macroscopic phase separation. Inclusion of TLCP in the blends decreased the cold crystallization temperature of PEN in the blend, therefore, the TLCP acts as a nucleating agent in the blend and showed good interfacial adhesion between the dispersed LCP phases and PEN matrix with domain sizes 40~50 nm in diameter and well developed fibrillation in the monofilaments. The TLCP acted effectively as a reinforcing material in the PEN matrix at the 10wt% level, it led to an increase of initial modulus up to 270% and tensile strength by 235%, while the elongation rate increasing with higher draw ratios.
