Electro-Rheological (ER) fluid is a class of functional fluid whose apparent viscosity can be varied by the applied electric field strength. The ER fluid is classified into two types; one is a dispersive fluid and the other is a homogeneous. Dispersive ER fluid is a colloidal suspension of fine semiconducting particles in a dielectric liquid and liquid crystal (LC) is classed as homogeneous type ER fluid. LC has been originally developed for some electronic display devices. Various mechanical components applying ER fluid have been developed, and the their performance typically depends on the characteristics of ER fluid which have generally been evaluated by a rotational viscometer. However, the ER fluid introduced into various mechanical components undergoes not only simple shear flow but press flow or oscillating flow. For the evaluation of ER fluid, the authors developed an reciprocating type viscometer. The amplitude is controlled on 5 mm at the frequency from 50 to 1000 Hz. In the present paper, the performance of several types of ER fluid is evaluated by the reciprocating type viscometer and compared with those evaluated by a rotational viscometer.

We fabricate organic single crystal nanowire heterojunction p-n diode poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) and from Phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester(PCBM) using by liquid-bridge mediated nanotransfer molding(LB-nTM) method. LB-nTM has been reported an one step direct printing method for making well-aligned nanowire arrays. Moreover, multi-patterning nanostructures can be fabricated with the consecutive printing process. As a result, it is possible to make simple and basic concept of heterojunction devices such as lateral organic p-n nanojunction diode. P3HT/PCBM nanowires heterojunction diode has rectifying behavior with on/off ratios of ~20.
The spectacular development of AMLCDs, been made possible by a-Si:H technology, still faces two major drawbacks due to the intrinsic structure of a-Si:H, namely a low mobility and most important a shift of the transfer characteristics of the TFTs when submitted to bias stress. This has lead to strong research in the crystallization of a-Si:H films by laser and furnace annealing to produce polycrystalline silicon TFTs. While these devices show improved mobility and stability, they suffer from uniformity over large areas and increased cost. In the last decade we have focused on microcrystalline silicon (${\mu}c$-Si:H) for bottom gate TFTs, which can hopefully meet all the requirements for mass production of large area AMOLED displays [1,2]. In this presentation we will focus on the transfer of a deposition process based on the use of $SiF_4$-Ar-$H_2$ mixtures from a small area research laboratory reactor into an industrial gen 1 AKT reactor. We will first discuss on the optimization of the process conditions leading to fully crystallized films without any amorphous incubation layer, suitable for bottom gate TFTS, as well as on the use of plasma diagnostics to increase the deposition rate up to 0.5 nm/s [3]. The use of silicon nanocrystals appears as an elegant way to circumvent the opposite requirements of a high deposition rate and a fully crystallized interface [4]. The optimized process conditions are transferred to large area substrates in an industrial environment, on which some process adjustment was required to reproduce the material properties achieved in the laboratory scale reactor. For optimized process conditions, the homogeneity of the optical and electronic properties of the ${\mu}c$-Si:H films deposited on $300{\times}400\;mm$ substrates was checked by a set of complementary techniques. Spectroscopic ellipsometry, Raman spectroscopy, dark conductivity, time resolved microwave conductivity and hydrogen evolution measurements allowed demonstrating an excellent homogeneity in the structure and transport properties of the films. On the basis of these results, optimized process conditions were applied to TFTs, for which both bottom gate and top gate structures were studied aiming to achieve characteristics suitable for driving AMOLED displays. Results on the homogeneity of the TFT characteristics over the large area substrates and stability will be presented, as well as their application as a backplane for an AMOLED display.

The electro-optical properties of PDLCs ( Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystals ) that have been interested for applications to projection display devices lately are significantly improved. For this improvement, we optimized not only the material parameters of liquid crystal and polymer but also the process conditions. Using TL series liquid crystals and polymer PN393 provided from Merck, we obtained the optimized process conditions such as cell gap, LC concentration, curing temperature and curing time. Under these conditions, we have achieved PDLC cells of threshold voltage 2.6V. contrast ratio 260 and negligible hysteresis.

Owing to the introduction of various IT devices with emphasis on portability and design, the TFT (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) panel applied to IT devices has the same shape as the product, and the portability requirement of IT devices has resulted in a need for panels with higher rigidity. In this study, the effect of grinding conditions such as the feed rate and edge speed of edge grinding on the surface roughness and chipping of the machined surface is investigated using a metal bond wheel. During edge grinding of alkari-free glass, weak mechanical property of glass results in big chipping owing to generation of tensile stress at the end of grining operation. The results of this study show that the grinding characteristics of alkali-free glass are obtained and meet industry requirements.
Since the introduction of CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) in the 1950s, display technologies have been developed continuously. Flat panel displays such as PDP(Plasma Display Panel) and LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) were commercialized in the late 1990s, and OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diodes) and Micro-LED(Micro-Light Emitting Diodes) are now being developed and are becoming widespread. In the future, we expect to develop ultra-realistic, flexible, embedded sensor displays. Ultra-realistic display can be applied to AR/VR(Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality) devices and spatial light modulators for holography. The sensor-embedded display can be applied to robots; electronic skin; and security devices, including iris recognition sensors, fingerprint recognition sensors, and tactile sensors. AR/VR technology must be developed to meet technical requirements such as viewing angle, resolution, and refresh rate. Holography requires optical modulation technology that can significantly improve resolution, viewing angle, and modulation method to enable wide-view and high-quality hologram stereoscopic images. For electronic skin, stable mass production technology, large-area arrays, and system integration technologies should be developed.

LCD is supplied light by BLU(Back Light Unit) and the light represents color by each color filter. Also LCD adjusts the amount of light by controlling liquid crystal between the glass of upper plate and one of lower. However, it is impossible to completely exclude light due to the structural and physical characteristic of liquid crystal. Therefore, on transfering light through optical sheet and liquid crystal, many problems are generated. They are related with energy efficiency and get effective for the contrast of LCD to have lower contrast ratio than other display devices. To solve the problems, many techniques have been studied and developed but don't exist keys to solution for them. Among methods, local dimming is one example to be applied to LCD. In this paper we propose image processing algorithm for local dimming of BLU of LED used as light source. The proposed algorithm extracts maximum luminance signal and lights using each extracted signal on segmented region of BLU. Also the proposed algorithm generates image signal in corresponding to luminance of the segmented region and supplies them with LCD panel to represent image with improving luminance ratio.
Starting with cathode ray tubes, displays are forming markets in the order of active marix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) after PDP (Plasma Display Panel) and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). OLED is recognized as a key field for the development of each country preparing for the fourth industrial revolution, and especially Samsung Display and LG Display, which are the top industries in Korea, are leading the market with more than 90% of OLED shares. Currently, AMOLED has moved to the area that can be folded or bent. This technology is possible because TFT (Thin Film Transistor) and OLED may be formed on a flexible substrate. In the future, the technology will move to stretchable displays, and for this, the development of substrate materials is first, and then TFT and OLED devices should also be implemented with stretchable materials.

CMOS LCD driving circuits using poly-Si TFT have been designed and basic blocks including test patterns have been fabricated. Column driver drives the pixels by block because polu-Si TFT can not operate at the speed of video signal. Row driver has mode selection circuit which can select a mode between interlacing mode and non-interlacing mode. Experimental results show shift register can operate at 1MHz colck frequency with 4pF load.
A recently developed phase separated composite film method has been employed to fabricate a liquid crystal (LC) based electro-optical device using a single glass substrate. The resulting device is made of adjacent parallel layers of LC and polymer maded by phase separation. The LC layer is confined between the solidified polymer layer on one side and the glass substrate on the other. The electro-optical properties of these devices demonstrate their technological potential in light weight and hand-held electronic products.
