Electro-optical Characteristics of a Multi-domain Vertical-alignment Liquid Crystal Display on Homeotropic Photopolymer Layer

  • Electro-optical characteristics of new multi-domain vertical-alignment (MVA) liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with negative dielectric anisotropy on a homeotropic photopolymer were studied. Good voltage-transmittance (V-T) curves by the new MVA-LCD on the homeotropic photo-polymer were obtained. Also, the stable response time of MVA-LCD on the homeotropic photopolymer can be achieved. The viewing angle of the new MVA-LCD could be improved by the grating groove with UV exposure and development on the photo-polymer.

  • As the physical properties of nematic liquid crystals vary with respect to temperature, the performances of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are highly dependent on temperature. Additionally, it is well known that the electro-optic characteristics of LCDs, such as transmittance and threshold voltage, also rely on the LCD switching modes. The temperature dependence of the electro-optic characteristics of the wide-viewing-angle LCD modes, such as in-plane switching (IPS), multidomain vertical alignment by patterned electrode (PVA), and fringe-field switching (FFS), have been studied, and the results showed that the FFS mode has lower temperature dependence compared to the IPS and PVA modes. Since the liquid crystal (LC) reorients in different ways in each mode, this result is associated with the temperature dependence of LC's bend and twist elastic constants, and also with the position of the main reorientation, either in the middle or on the surface of the LC layer.

  • Most recently, the Liquid Crystal (LC) aligning capabilities achieved by ion beam exposure on the diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film layer have been successfully studied. The DLC thin films have a high mechanical hardness, a high electrical resistance, optical transparency and chemical inertness. Nitrogen doped Diamond Like Carbon (NDLC) thin films exhibit properties similar to those of the DLC films and better thermal stability than the DLC films because C:N bonding in the NDLC film is stronger against thermal stress than C:H bonding in the DLC thin films. Moreover, our research group has already studied ion beam alignment method using the NDLC thin films. The nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment effects treated on the SiNx thin film layers using ion beam irradiation for three kinds of N rations was successfully studied for the first time. The SiNx thin film was deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and used three kinds of N rations. In order to characterize the films, the atomic force microscopy (AFM) image was observed. The good LC aligning capabilities treated on the SiNx thin film with ion beam exposure for all N rations can be achieved. The low pretilt angles for a NLC treated on the SiNx thin film with ion beam irradiation were measure.

  • The control of high pretilt angle far nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed blending polyimide (homeotropic and homogeneous alignment) surface were studied. High NLC pretilt angle generated on the blending polyimide (homeotropic polyimide and SE-7492 surface was measured and the NLC pretilt angle increases with blending ratio and rubbing strength. However, the NLC pretilt angle generated on the blending polyimide (homeotropic polyimide and SE-150 surface was not varied. The high pretilt angle the NLC using blending polyimide surface can be acheived.

  • 편광 푸리에 변환 적외선 분광법을 이용하여 액정 디스플레이의 배향막으로 널리 사용되는 폴리이미드 필름의 편광 자외선 조사에 따른 액정의 배향성과 열적 안정성을 연구하였다. 편광자외선이 조사된 폴리이미드의 경우, 조사된 편광자외선의 극성 방향에 평행한 폴리이미드 분자들의 우선적인 광분해 반응으로 인하여 편광자외선 조사 후 남아 있는 폴리이미드 분자들은 조사된 편광자외선 극성 방향과 수직 배향을 나타내었다. 하지만 러빙 처리된 폴리이미드 필름은 러빙 방향과 평행하게 폴리이미드 분자들의 재배향이 유도됨을 확인하였다. 또한 편광자외선이 조사된 폴리이미드 배향막이 편광자외선 조사를 통한 폴리이미드 분자들의 단편화 반응 때문에 러빙 처리된 폴리이미드 배향막 보다는 열적 안정성이 저하됨을 확인하였다.

  • We present the results of a study of the polarizing photovoltaic (PV) effects in an aligned polymer bulk heterojuction PV layer. The fairly uniform in-plane uniaxial alignment of the PV layer with a macroscopic axial orientational order parameter of 0.40 was achieved by means of a simple rubbing technique. Moreover, reflective polarizing PSCs having the aligned PV layers were applied to power-generating reflective type liquid crystal displays (LCDs), which exhibited a maximum contrast ratio of 1.7. These results form a promising foundation for various energy harvesting polarization dependent opto-electrical LCD device applications.

  • We investigated the liquid crystal (LC) alignment phenomena using a-C:H and a-C:F:H thin films. Homogeneous alignment is obtained using ion beam treated hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) thin films. Homeotropic alignment is obtained using F treated a-C:H thin films, namely, fluorinated amorphous carbon (a-C:F:H) thin films. We investigated the relationship between the surface properties of amorphous carbon based alignment layer and LC alignment phenomena.

  • In this study, liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities for vertical alignment on the $CeO_x$ thin film by thermal evaporation method were investigated. Also, the control of pretilt angles and thermal stabilities of the NLC treated on $CeO_x$ thin film were investgated. The uniform LC alignment on the $CeO_x$ thin film surfaces and good thermal stabilities with thermal evaporation can be achieved. It is considerated that the LC alignment on the $CeO_x$ thin film by thermal evaporation is attributed to elastic interaction between LC molecules and micro-grooves at the $CeO_x$ thin film surface created by evaporation. In addition, it can be achieved the good electro-optical (EO) properties of the VA-LCD on $CeO_x$ thin film layer with oblique thermal evaporation.

The effect of Ion Beam modification of Polyimide surface on alignment properties of liquid crystals

  • The alignment effect of liquid crystals on Polyimide surfaces bombarded by a low energy argon ion beam and the effect of pretilt angle on viewing characteristics of an LCD cell are discussed. The unidirectional out-of-plane liquid crystal tilt angle is varied with various ion beam irradiation conditions, such as the energy of the incident ions, the angle of incidence and exposure time. As low pretilt angle is profitable for wider viewing property, LCD cell with ion beam modified Polyimide layer show wider viewing characteristics.
