This study was investigated the effects on the radical scavenging activities and hepatic lipid levels in rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD) by the 70% ethanolic extract from Rubus coreanus. The Rubus coreanus extract (RCE) was administered through the gastrointestinal tract at 150 mg/kg BW/day for 5 weeks (HFD+RCE). Total phenol content was 157.93 mg gallic acid/g in the RCE. Scavenging activities to DPPH, ABTS, an d hydroxyl radicals by RCE significantly increased in a does-dependent manner of $50{\sim}500{\mu}g/mL$ concentration. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities were over the 70% in the $500{\mu}g/mL$ concentration. During the five weeks study, the food efficiency ratio was no significant differences between the HFD and HFD+RCE. Liver weight of HFD+RCE (3.75 g/100 g BW) was significantly decreased compared to those of the HFD. Hepatic triglyceride and total cholesterol levels of HFD+RCE were significantly lower compared to those of the HFD. The hepatic TBARS contents in the HFD+RCE was significantly decreased to the HFD, radical scavenging activity was markedly increased in HFD+RCE as normal group. In histological observation of liver tissues, the hepatocytes of HFD+RCE appeared the reduced aspects on the size and numbers of lipid droplets in cytoplasm compared to the HFD. Our results suggest that RCE could have antioxidant activities and hepatic hypolipidemic effects by its phenolic compounds.
A feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of replacement of dietary fish meal by frozen whole krill (FWK) and/or krill meal (KM) on growth performance and body composition of juvenile black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. The basal experimental diet (ED) contained 58.4% fish meal (FM) as a control, the other five EDs were formulated with the protein replacement ratio of fish meal by as 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40%, respectively (FWKM0, FWK10, FWK20, FWK20KM10, FWK20KM20 and FWK20KM20HP). Each diet was fed to juvenile rockfish initially weighing 3.09±0.02 g/fish in a flow-through system. The control ED containing 58.4% FM and 10% FWK diet showed significantly higher weight gain and feed efficiency than all the other EDs containing 20, 30, and 40% FWK and/or KM. But the survivals, whole-body moistures, crude proteins and lipids of black rockfish fed all EDs were similar in all EDs. The only whole-body ashes of juvenile black rockfish were significantly differentiated by feeding the various EDs containing different levels of FWK and/or KM with a protein and lipid levels adjustment. These results suggest that dietary frozen whole Antarctic krill and/or krill meal inclusions could not improve the growth but change the whole-body ashes in juvenile black rockfish. Therefore, this study further indicates that dietary more than 20% of FWK and/or KM supplementation could not be a potential source of animal protein to replace fishmeal in juvenile black rockfish.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the blood concentrations of lipids, insulin and ascorbic acid, and their correlations in obese college men in Gyeongnam area. The blood pressure was significantly higher (p<0.001) in the obese group($127.8{\pm}7.2/86.7{\pm}9.2\;mmHg$) than the control group($112.8{\pm}6.6/71.9{\pm}6.6\;mmHg$). The serum triglyceride (p<0.01), total cholesterol (p<0.01), LDL-cholesterol (p<0.05), insulin (p<0.001) concentrations and atherogenic index (AI) (p<0.001) were significantly higher in the obese group ($158.8{\pm}79.7\;{\mu}U/L$, $185.0{\pm}26.8\;{\mu}U/L$, $111.9{\pm}28.1\;{\mu}U/L$, $15.2{\pm}5.6\;{\mu}U/L$, $3.6{\pm}1.0$) than the control group($111.9{\pm}35.8\;{\mu}U/L$, $165.9{\pm}19.4\;{\mu}U/L$, $97.0{\pm}16.4\;{\mu}U/L$, $8.9{\pm}4.4\;{\mu}U/L$, $2.6{\pm}0.3$), but HDL-cholesterol concentration was significantly higher (p<0.01) in the control group($46.5{\pm}7.2\;{\mu}U/L$) than the obese group($41.3{\pm}6.9\;{\mu}U/L$). On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the plasma ascorbic acid concentration in both groups. The ascorbic acid concentration was negatively correlated with total cholesterol level in the control group, and with triglyceride, total cholesterol levels and diastolic blood pressure in the obese group (p<0.05). These data show that young adult obesity might be related to hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes mellitus, and that the nutrition of ascorbic acid is more important for obese males than normal weight males.

This study was designed to investigate whether consumption of onion wine can reduce serum biomarkers of ethanol-induced fatty liver in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were initially trained for meal feeding to prevent reduction of food intake. After the training period, rats were weight-matched and assigned to the following three groups: 1) a control group fed a control liquid diet containing maltose-dextrin, 2) an ethanol group fed an ethanol liquid diet with 95% ethanol, and 3) an onion wine group fed the same ethanol liquid diet but containing onion wine extract at 1 mL/d/group. All three groups were fed daily for 6 weeks. At 0, 3, and 6 weeks, blood was collected via the orbital sinus following overnight food deprivation and terminally organs collected. Blood lipids and transaminase activities significantly increased in the ethanol-fed group but significantly reversed in the onion wine-fed group. The hepatic levels of fat and cholesterol at 6 weeks were significantly elevated by ethanol administration but significantly reduced by onion wine. These findings indicate that onion wine may ameliorate ethanol-induced fatty liver by lowering hepatic and blood lipid levels.

Boesenbergia pandurata (Roxb.) Schltr. has been reported to possess anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Boesenbergia pandurata extract (BPE) in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice model. C57BL/6J mice were fed with either the high-fat diet or a 0.5% BPE-supplemented HFD for 8 weeks. The BPE-containing HFD significantly reduced body weight gain and the accumulation of visceral fat mass in mice model without altering the amount of food intake. Moreover, mice fed with BPE-containing HFD had lower concentrations of lipids in their blood, lower hepatic lipid accumulation, and lower serum leptin levels compared with the HFD-fed mice. RT-PCR analysis showed that the expression levels of peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor ${\gamma}2$ ($PPAR{\gamma}2$) and CCAT/enhancer binding protein ${\alpha}$ ($C/EBP{\alpha}$) genes in the epididymal fat tissue of mice fed the BPE-containing HFD increased 1.16- and 1.30-fold, respectively, compared to mice fed HFD only. In conclusion, BPE attenuated visceral fat accumulation and improved dyslipidemia in a mice model with HFD-induced obesity.
This study was to investigate the effects of a silk peptide, and prune and raspberry mixture on the body fat, serum lipid composition and fat distribution in Korean women during the time they received these supplements. During the 4 month period of this research (June to October, 2002), 75 women (average age 22.9 yr) were selected as subjects. Their nutrient intake was investigated by use of a questionnaire and the 24-hour recall method. Antropometric assessments of the subjects were investigated by using the SBIA Method (Segmental Bioimpedance Assay, Inbody 3.0). The results were as follows: their mean body weight was 59.3 kg, their mean body height was 161.7 cm and their mean Basal Metabolic Indices (BMI) was 22.7. The status of their dietary fiber intake significantly increased (p < 0.05) after use of the supplements. Their body fat significantly decreased following the $3^{rd}$ stage of supplementation (p < 0.05), and their percent of body fat signiflcantly decreased after supplementation (p < 0.05). Their triceps and suprailiac circumference significantly decreased following the $3^{rd}$ stage of supplementation (p < 0.05). Their waist circumferences and waist-hip ratios (WHR) significantly decreased after both the $2^{nd}$and $3^{rd}$ stage of supplementation (p < 0.05). Their total cholesterol significantly decreased following the $3^{rd}$ stage of supplementation, as compared to their baseline results and those obtained following the 1$^{st}$ stage of supplementation (p < 0.05). Their LDL-cholesterol and LDL / HDL ratios significantly decreased following the $3^{rd}$ stage of supplementation, as compared to their baseline results and those obtained following the 1$^{st}$ stage of supplementation (p < 0.05). Their 4-HNE and total antioxidant statuses significantly decreased following the $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$stage of supplementation, as compared to their baseline results and those obtained following the $1^{st}$ stage of supplementation (p <0.05). Their $2^{nd}$ stage supplementation results were significantly negatively correlated with their triceps measurements and WHR (p < 0.05). Their $3^{rd}$stage supplementation results were significantly negatively correlated with their anterior thigh measurements (p < 0.05). The above results show that prune, raspberry, silk peptide and dietary fiber supplementation to a routine diet improves body fat distribution, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. The decrease of abdominal fat and WHR were especially noteworthy. This implies a decrease of risk factors. (Korean J Community Nutrition 8(3) : 356~367, 2003)003)

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential effects of extracts from silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) that was fermented with Bacillus subtilis KACC 91157 at the levels of 1%(v/w), 2.5%(v/w), and 5%(v/w) in alcohol-fed rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into seven groups: normal group (N), alcohol treated group (C), silymarin treated group (PC, positive control), 5% silkworm powder treated group (SP5), 1% Bacillus subtilis-fermented silkworm powder treated group (BSP1), 2.5% BSP treated group (BSP2.5), and 5% BSP treated group (BSP5). The activities of AST, ALT, ALP, and LDH in the serum and the triglyceride concentrations in the liver and serum were increased by alcohol feeding but were reduced in the BSP5 group. In addition, the contents of total lipids, free fatty acids, and total cholesterol were increased in the alcohol-fed group but were reduced in the BSP5 group. The activities of ADH, ALDH and ADH, ALDH protein levels in the liver were increased in the BSP5 group. The TBARS contents in the liver, serum, liver mitochondria, and liver microsomes were slightly decreased in the BSP5 group compared to the C group. The hepatocytes in alcohol-fed rats contained numerous large droplets; however, BSP5 treatment prevented alcohol-induced lipid droplet accumulation in the hepatocytes. Based on these results, extracts from Bacillus subtilis-fermented silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) have significant potential for development into a functional health food that can improve alcoholic fatty liver conditions.
Fatty liver disease refers to a range of disorders associated with fatty liver, which occur in excessive eating, evident infection or significant consumption of alcohol. This study was to investigate the effects of water and ethanol extracts of Triticum aestivum young leaf on lipid metabolism and accumulation in liver of mice fed with high-fat diet. Male C57BL/6 mice were divided into normal diet group, high fat diet (HFD) group, high fat diet group administrated with 200 mg/kg/day of T. aestivum water extract (HFD-TAWE) and high-fat group administrated with 200 mg/kg/day of T. aestivum ethanol extract (HFD-TAEE). TAWE and TAEE were administrated orally for 5 weeks once at the same time point. Both TAWE and TAEE significantly reduced body weight, food intake and liver tissue weight, which were augmented in high fat-fed mice. The serum levels of triglyceride, total and LDL-cholesterol also were significantly attenuated in both HFD-TAWE and HFD-TAEE groups compared to the HFD group. Moreover, administration of HFD-TAWE or HFD-TAEE reduced the lipid accumulation in liver tissue of mice fed with high fat diet. Levels of total lipids and triglyceride in liver tissues also was significantly reduced in HFDTAWE and HFD-TAEE groups compared to HFD group. The activities of serum ALT and AST revealed in HFD group were remarkedly decreased in HFD-TAEE groups. These results indicate that both water and ethanol extract of T. aestivum may improve the lipid accumulation in liver as well as lipid metabolism in serum, and that in particular, the ethanol extract of T. aestivum may has the potent anti-hyperlipidemic effect, suggesting that it may be a useful candidate for the therapy preventing fatty liver diseases.

The effect of commercial deer antler drink (provided by Chung-yang Deer Farm) on blood glucose level, plasma lipids and antioxidants state in type 2 diabetic patients were studied. Ten patients with type 2 diabetes participated in the study and consumed 2 pouches (200 mL) of deer antler drink every day for 3 weeks. No significant differences were observed in levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). However, oxidized LDL measured as conjugated dienes decreased in the patients after the trial. Plasma tocopherols and carotenoids levels showed no significant changes. No significant differences were observed in erythrocyte SOD, catalase and GSH-Px in the each group. No significant differences were observed in plasma TRAP. The results would suggest that deer antler drink influences conjugated dienes but long-term intervention trial may be necessary to see further beneficial effect of deer antler drink in diabetic patients.

This study was carried out to compare the effects of different plant oil sources on lipid metabolism of insulin dependent diabetic mice. Streptozotocin-induced (65 mg/kg B.W.) diabetic mice were fed four kinds of experimental diets with 20% lipid, which composed of 10% lard, and 10% soy bean oil (SBO), 10% rice germ oil (RGO), 10% rice brab oil (RBO) and 10% sesame oil (SSO) respectively, for 7 weeks. Diet intake, body weight, organs weights and lipids levels of serum, liver and feces were measured. There was no significant difference in diet intake and body weight among experimental groups. But the concentrations of serum triglyceride of RGO and RBO groups, and of serum total cholesterol of RGO and SSO groups were lower than those of the others. The hepatic total cholesterol level was the lowest in RGO group. The contents of total lipid and total cholesterol excreted in feces of RGO and RBO groups were higher than those of SBO and SSO groups. These results suggested that rice germ oil can effectively reduce serum triglyceride level and hepatic total cholesterol concentration of insulin dependent diabetic mice than rice bran oil, soy bean oil and sesame oil, and hypolipidemic effect of rice germ oil be due to increasing fecal lipid excretion. But we need to investigate the more detailed factors on lipid reducing effect in rice germ oil and rice bran oil.
