  • This study was carried out to find out the relationship between qualities and contraction phenomenon of silk fibers by treatment of concentrated neutral salts. The contraction effects of silk fibers showed the critical point on the treatment conditions of concentration, temperature and time, among three kinds of neutral salts such as calcium nitrate, calcium chloride and lithium bromide. But, The silk fibers, pretreated with bromide and/or formaldehyde, did not show the contraction upon treating with calcium nitrate. This indicates that tyrosine and serine can be correlated with the contraction reaction because of coupling these amino acids with bromide and formaldehyde. In conclusion, a mechanism for the contraction of silk fiber with highly concentrated calcium nitrate solution is supposed as follows. At the initial stage of ration, the water was penetrated into the amorphous regions and fibers swollen, therefore, the contraction took place mainly in amorphous regions, which have plenty of functional groups with hydroxyl residues. Then, as the calcium nitrate is penetrated into the microfibril, the gydrogen bonds of tyrosine and serine residues and broken and crystalline regions are more and more influenced by increasing concentration of calcium nitrate solution. Microgibrils of crystalline regions become entangled, contracted to linear direction and rearranged to form new stable hydrogen bonds.

  • Controlling nonlinear systems with linear feedback control methods can lead to chaotic behaviors. Order increase in system dynamics due to integral control and control parameter variations in PID controlled nonlinear systems are studied for possible chaos regions in the closed-loop system dynamics. The Lur’e form of the feedback systems are analyzed with Routh’s stability criterion and describing function analysis for chaos prediction. Several novel chaotic systems are generated from second-order nonlinear systems including the simplest continuous-time chaotic system. Analytical and numerical results are provided to verify the existence of the chaotic dynamics.

  • The purpose of this paper are to find the relations between efficient faces and the regions of weights on the objective functions in Multi-objective Linear Programming. First, we define the region of weights corresponding to an efficient face, and find the changing pattern within the region of weights. Second, we find the eqution of the dimensional relation between the efficient face and the region of weight corrsponding to it.

  • Usually, the critical current of jointed BSCCO tapes degrades quite a bit compared to the normal unjointed tape regions. It has been thought that the current redistribution around the jointed region is the main cause it. We experimentally found the linear voltage components around the jointed area, especially in the transition region, which suggests that the current redistribution around the jointed area is the main reason of the critical current degradations.

  • To test simultaneous significance of more than two linear regression coefficients, we can consider multivariate-t tests with critical regions in t-space instead of F-tests where t-values are t-statistics of significance tests of one coefficient. In this paper bivariate-t distributions and bivariate-t tests of two coefficients such as maxmod, minmod, one-tailed maxmod and one-tailed minmod tests are studied. Through the calculation of powers of test, it is learned that in some cases bivariate-t test are more powerful than F-tests.

  • Polarimetry is an important tool for studying the physical processes in the interstellar medium, including star-forming regions. Polarimetry of young stellar objects and their circumstellar structures provides invaluable information about distributions of matter and configurations of magnetic fields in their environments. However, only a few near-infrared circular polarization (CP) observations were reported so far (before our survey). A systematic near-infrared CP survey has been firstly conducted in various star-forming regions, covering high-mass, intermediate-mass, and low-mass young stellar objects. All the observations were made using the SIRPOL imaging polarimeter on the Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF) 1.4 m telescope at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). In this presentation, we present the first CP survey results. The polarization patterns, extents, and maximum degrees of circular and linear polarizations are used to determine the prevalence and origin of CP in the star-forming regions. Our results are explained with a combination of circumstellar scattering and dichroic extinction mechanism generating the high degrees of CP in star-forming regions. The universality of the large and extended CPs in star-formaing regions can also be linked with the origin of homochirality of life.

  • In this paper we propose three nonparametric tests such as Wilcoxon test, Median test and Van der Waerden test, based on linear rank statistics for detecting edges in images. The methods used herein are based on detecting changes in gray-levels obtained using an edge-height parameter between two sub-regions in a 5$\times$5 window We compare and analysis the performance of three statistical edge detectors in terms of qualitative measures with the edge maps and objective, quantitative measures.

  • This paper presents a linear programming based algorithm for pattern classification. Pattern classification is being considered to be critical in the area of artificial intelligence and business applications. Previous methods employing linear programming have been aimed at two-group discrimination with one or more linear discriminant functions. Therefore, there are some limitations in applying available linear programming formulations directly to general multi-class classification problems. The algorithm proposed in this manuscript is based on quadratic or polynomial discriminant functions, which allow more flexibility in covering the class regions in the N-dimensional space. The proposed algorithm is compared with other competitive methods of pattern classification in experimental results and is shown to be competitive enough for a general purpose classifier.

  • Presented is a method to estimate system parameters of a system with polynomial non-linerities from the measured higher order frequency response functions. Higher order FRFs can be measured on some restricted regions by sinusoidally exciting a non-linear system with various input amplitudes and measuring the response component at the excitation frequency. These higher order FRFs can be expressed in terms of system parameter, and the system parameters can be estimated from the measured FRFs. Since the expressions for higher order FRFs are complicated, system parameters can be estimated from them using an optimization technique. The present method has been applied to a simulated single degree of freedom system with non-linear stiffness and damping, and has estimated accurate system parameters.

  • Local linear estimator has a number of advantages over the traditional kernel estimators. The better performance near boundaries is one of them. However, local linear estimator can produce erratic result in sparse regions in the realization of the design and to solve this problem much research has been done. Local linear quasi-likelihood estimator has many common properties with local linear estimator, and it turns out that sparse design can also lead local linear quasi-likelihood estimator to erratic behavior in practice. Several methods to solve this problem are proposed and their finite sample properties are compared by the simulation study.
