Construction of sheet pile retaining walls in urban and coastal regions has resulted in sheet pile walls in close proximity to laterally loaded pile foundations. However, there is currently little information available in the literature to assist engineers for quantifying the response of sheet pile walls. This study provides a quantitative method for estimating sheet pile wall response due to loads imposed from a nearby laterally loaded pile. Three dimensional finite element analyses using commercial software, ABAQUS, were performed to assess the response of a sheet pile wall and nearby laterally loaded pile. The soils were modeled using Drucker-Prager constitutive model with associated flow rule, and the sheet pile wall and pile foundation were assumed to behave linear elastic. Four parameters were investigated: sheet pile wall bending stiffness, distance from the pile face to the wall, excavation depth in front of the sheet pile wall, and elastic modulus of the soil. Results from the analyses have been used to develop preliminary design charts and simple equations for estimating the maximum horizontal displacement and maximum bending moment in the sheet pile wall.

A rudder roll control system is developed and analyzed to control yawing and rolling motion of ship in irregular waves. The 4-DOF maneuvering equations of motion are derived to carry out the simulation of the motion of a ship and the wave forces are considered as the external forces of a ship in the simulation. The wave forces in the time domain analysis are generated from the frequency transfer function calculated by 3-D source distribution method. The rudder roll control system is developed by linear combination of PD rudder controllers of yawing and rolling motion Rudder rate speed and Schilling rudder are considered to increase roll reduction efficiency.
Ibuprofen was analyzed by chiral high performance liquid chromatography. Retention behaviours of the standard mixtures of ibuprofen were investigated to obtain their acceptable resolution. A chromatographic column (3.9 ${\times}$ 300 mm) was packed by Kromasil CHI-TBB packings (10 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and n-hexane was used as a mobile phase with 0.1% acetic acid and tert-butyl methyl ether. Isocratic elution of ibuprofen at 1.0 $m\ell$/min was performed by changing the mobile phase compositions. The experimental variables affecting the resolution were the compositions of mobile phase and chemical buffer (n-hexane and tert-butyl methyl ether). The resolution between the enantiomers were correlated into the several types of empirical equations including linear form, and their agreements between experimental data and calculated values were examined by the regression coefficient.
The purpose of this study was to investigate students' problem solving process based on the model of IDEAL if they learn to solve word problems of simultaneous linear equations through structure-representation instruction. The problem solving model of IDEAL is followed by stages; identifying problems(I), defining problems(D), exploring alternative approaches(E), acting on a plan(A). 160 second-grade students of middle schools participated in a study was classified into those of (a) a control group receiving no explicit instruction of structure-representation in word problem solving, and (b) a group receiving structure-representation instruction followed by IDEAL. As a result of this study, a structure-representation instruction improved word-problem solving performance and the students taught by the structure-representation approach discriminate more sharply equivalent problem, isomorphic problem and similar problem than the students of a control group. Also, students of the group instructed by structure-representation approach have less errors in understanding contexts and using data, in transferring mathematical symbol from internal learning relation of word problem and in setting up an equation than the students of a control group. Especially, this study shows that the model of direct transformation and the model of structure-schema in students' problem solving process of I and D stages.

Design parameters of manned and unmanned rotorcrafts have been investigated to construct a design database and to derive trend curves. Design parameters of 78 manned rotorcrafts and 33 unmanned rotorcrafts have been collected and analyzed using linear regression method. Six kinds of trend curves equations are derived. Most of trend curves derived are relatively meaningful according to the calculated correlation and determination coefficients. The comparisons between manned and unmanned rotorcraft characteristics are performed. It has been drawn according to the comparisons that unmanned rotorcraft has smaller main rotor diameter and maximum take-off weight, bigger tail rotor size and similar level of empty weight fraction than manned rotorcraft.

In this research, we have attempted to estimate the water quality of fish farms in terms of parameters such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and salinity by employing observational data obtained from a coastal ocean observatory of a national institution located close to the fish farm. We requested and received marine data comprising nine factors including water temperature from Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration. For verifying our results, we also established an experimental fish farm in which we directly placed the sensor module of an optical mode, YSI-6920V2, used for self-cleaning inside fish tanks and used the data measured and recorded by a environment monitoring system that was communicating serially with the sensor module. We investigated the differences in water temperature and salinity among three areas - Goheung Balpo, Yeosu Odongdo, and the experimental fish farm, Keumho. Water temperature did not exhibit significant differences but there was a difference in salinity (significance <5%). Further, multiple regression analysis was performed to estimate the water quality of the fish farm at Keumho based on the data of Goheung Balpo. The water temperature and dissolved-oxygen estimations had multiple regression linear relationships with coefficients of determination of 98% and 89%, respectively. However, in the case of the pH and salinity estimated using the oceanic environment with nine factors, the adjusted coefficient of determination was very low at less than 10%, and it was therefore difficult to predict the values. We plotted the predicted and measured values by employing the estimated regression equation and found them to fit very well; the values were close to the regression line. We have demonstrated that if statistical model equations that fit well are used, the expense of fish-farm sensor and system installations, maintenances, and repairs, which is a major issue with existing environmental information monitoring systems of marine farming areas, can be reduced, thereby making it easier for fish farmers to monitor aquaculture and mariculture environments.

This paper presents simple models for flow and the PIG dynamics when it passes through a $90^{\circ}$ curved section of pipeline. The simulation has been done with two different operational boundary conditions. The solution fur non-linear hyperbolic partial equations for flow is given by using MOC. The Runge-Kuta method is used to solve the initial condition equation fur flow and the PIG dynamics equation. The simulation results show that the proposed model and solution can be used fur estimating the PIG dynamics when the pig runs in the pipeline including curved section. In this paper, dynamic modeling and its analysis for the PIG flow through $90^{\circ}$ curved pipe with compressible and unsteady flow are studied. The PIG dynamics model is derived by using Lagrange equation under assumption that it passes through 3 different sections in the curved pipeline such that it moves into, inside and out of the curved section. The downstream and up stream flow dynamics including the curved sections are solved using MOC. The effectiveness of the derived mathematical models is estimated by simulation results fur a low pressure natural gas pipeline including downward and upward curved sections. The simulation results show that the proposed model and solution can be used for estimating the PIG dynamics when we pig the pipeline including curved section.
This paper investigates the design equations and the strength behavior of the diaphragm for steel box beams and circular-column connections. The strength of the connection is decided by the strength of the diaphragm and the strength of the beam and the column, because the connection diaphragm supports the concentration forces from the box beam's lower flange. In previous researches, however, the calculation procedure of the diaphragm stress from the indeterminate curved-beam model is to complicated to apply in process of the equation. Moreover, no reasonable design has yet ben made because the diaphragm's effect on the strength of the connection has not ben considered. Therefore, through nonlinear FEM analysis of the connection diaphragm, this study examines the strength behavior of a connection with diaphragm details. In addition, a great difference is confirmed between the theoretical and analytic behaviors. Fi naly, considering the strength of the connection and the rigidity capacity of the diaphragm, the diaphragm design method is proposed.

A ground-based microwave scatterometer has an advantage for monitoring soil moisture content using multi-polarization, multi-frequencies and various incidence angles. In this paper, ground-based multi-frequency (L-, C-, and X-band) polarimetric scatterometer system capable of making observations every 10 min was used to monitor the soil moisture conditions in a corn field over an entire growth cycle. Measurements of volumetric soil moisture were obtained and their relationships to the backscatter observations were examined. Time series of soil moisture content was not corresponding with backscattering coefficient pattern over the whole growth stage, although it increased until early July (Day Of Year, DOY 160). We examined the relationship between the backscattering coefficients from each band and soil moisture content of the field. Backscattering coefficients for all bands were not correlated with soil moisture content when considered over the entire stage ($r{\leq}0.48$). However, L-band Horizontal transmit and Horizontal receive polarization (HH) had a good correlation with soil moisture ($r=0.85^{**}$) when LAI was lower than 2. Prediction equations for soil moisture were developed using the L-HH data. Relation between L-HH and soil moisture shows linear pattern and related with soil moisture content ($R^2=0.77$). Results from this study show that backscattering coefficients of microwave scatterometer appear to be effective to estimate soil moisture content in the field level.

An analytical method to predict qualitative performance characteristics of the Stirling Engines in the preliminary design stages is investigated. Both the expansion and the compression cylinder are treated as adiabatic and piston motions are approximated as saw-toothed waves. Basic equations which were originally proposed by Finkelstein consist of mass conservation and energy balances for each adiabatic cylinder. The approximation on piston motions and physical conditions make it possible to divide an engine cycle into four fundamental processes. In each process, first, pressure can be expressed as a function of the crank angle by solving a nonlinear first order ordinary differential equation and other thermodynamic variables are determined in turn. Application of the cyclic steady condition to the whole processes can complete a cycle. Also, further analysis results in analytic expressions for cyclic work and heat transfer in terms of the engine parameters and thermodynamic variables at boundary points. The results are expected useful as a quick reference for the engine performances. Finally, the present method can be applied to the other adiabatic analyses on the Stirling Engines with piece wise linear piston motions, if mass variations are predictable.
