Purpose: The energy consumption in buildings has continuously increased in some countries and it reaches almost 25% of the total energy use in korea. Therefore there are various efforts to minimize energy consumption in buildings, and the regulations on building envelope insulation have been tightened up gradually. To satisfy the building regulation, the use of vacuum insulation panels(VIPs) is increasing. VIP is a high performance insulation materials, so that it can be thinner than conventional insulation material. When VIP is applied in a building, it may cause thermal bridge, which occurs due to very low thermal conductivity compared to other building materials and the envelope of VIPs. Method: This study designed the capsulized VIPs using conventional insulation for reduction of the thermal bridge. Then designed VIPs were applied to a wall. The linear thermal transmittance and the effective thermal conductivity were analyzed by HEAT2 simulation program for two dimensional steady-state heat transfer. The result compared with a wall with non-capsulized VIPs. Result: It analyzed that the wall with capsulized VIPs had lower linear thermal transmittance and reduced the difference of the effective thermal transmittance with one dimensional thermal transmittance compared to that of the wall with non-capsulized VIPs.

LMTT (Linear Motor-based Transfer Techn-ology) is a horizontal transfer system for the yard automation, which has been proposed to take the place of AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) in the maritime container terminal. The system is based on PLMSL (Permanent Magnetic Linear Synchronous Motor) that consists of stator modules on the rail and shuttle car. It is desirable to reduce the weight of LMTT in order to control the electronic devices with minimum energy. In this research, the DACE modeling, known as the one of Kriging interpolation, is introduced to obtain the surrogate approximation model of the structural responses. Then, the GRG(Generalized Reduced Gradient) method built in Excel is adopted to determine the optimum. The objective function is set up as weight. On the contrary, the design variables are considered as transverse, longitudinal and wheel beam's thicknesses, and the constraints are the maximum stresses generated by four loading conditions.
Linear carbon chains (LCCs) encapsulated inside the hollow cores of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been experimentally synthesized and structurally characterized by Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. However, in terms of electronic conductivity, their transportation mechanism has not been investigated theoretically or experimentally. In this study, the density of states and quantum conductance spectra were simulated through density functional theory combined with the non-equilibrium Green function method. The encapsulated LCCs inside (5,5), (6,4), and (9,0) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibited a drastic change from metallic to semiconducting or from semiconducting to metallic due to the strong charge transfer between them. On the other hand, the electronic change in the conductance value of LCCs encapsulated inside the (7,4) SWCNT were in good agreement with the superposition of the individual SWCNTs and the isolated LCCs owing to the weak charge transfer.
An experimental study of jet impinging the non-isothermal heating surface with linear temperature gradient is conducted with the presentation of the turbulent flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate, represented by the Nusselt number. The jet Reynolds number ranges from 15,000 to 30,000, the temperature gradient of the plate is 2~4.2$^{\circ}C$/cm and the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance (H/D) is from 2 to 10. The results show that the peak of heat transfer rate occurs at the stagnation point, and the heat transfer rate decreases as the radial distance from the stagnation point increases. A remarkable feature of the heat transfer rate is the existence of the second peak. This is due to the turbulent development of the wall jet. Maximum heat transfer rate occurs when the axial distance from the nozzle to nozzle diameter (H/D) is 6 or 8. The heat transfer rate can be correlated as a power function of Prandtl number, Reynolds number, the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance (H/D) and temperature gradient (dT/dr). It has been found that the heat transfer rate increases with increasing turbulent intensity. The wall jet is influenced by temperature gradient and the effect becomes more important at higher radii.
Spin-transfer torque is a useful tool to control the magnetic state in nanostructures. In magnetic tunnel junctions, the spin-transfer torque has two components, the in-plane spin torque and the perpendicular spin torque. While properties of the in-plane spin-transfer torque are relatively well understood, properties of the perpendicular spin-transfer torque still remain controversial. A recent experiment demonstrated that in asymmetric magnetic tunnel junctions, the bias voltage dependence of the perpendicular spin-transfer torque contains both linear and quadratic terms in the bias. However it still remains unexplored how the bias voltage dependence changes as a function of material parameters. In this paper, we systematically investigate the perpendicular spin-transfer torque in asymmetric magnetic tunnel junction by varying spin splitting energy, work function difference, and Fermi energy of the ferromagnetic metal leads.
The objective of this work is to obtain the experimental data for the heat transfer processes occurring both on the inside and outside surfaces of containment steel wall with dry and wet outer surface conditions in the passive containment cooling system. The test model represented a 60$^{\circ}$ section of a containment vessel based on the AP 600 geometry. Major linear dimensions of the test model ore reduced tv a factor of ten. To simulate the decay heat a steam generator heated by electricity was placed in the test model. The maximum heat flux was 8.91 kW/$m^2$. Two types of tests were performed. The one was the tort on the natural convection of air without water film flow. The other was the evaporative heat transfer test with the falling water film flow and natural air draft. no test result shooed that the heat transfer capability by the natural convection from the containment to the air without oater film flow was limited at about 1.48 kW/$m^2$ heat flux. It was found that the heat removal capability was remarkably enhanced in the tests with the waster film flow and air draft. The obtained heat transfer data ore compared with the existing correlations.
The Free-Piston Stirling engine (FPSE) is of interest for many research in aerospace due to its advantages of long operating life, higher efficiency, and zero maintenance. In this study, a 1-kW FPSE was proposed by analyzing the requirements of Space Reactor Power Systems (SRPS), of which performance was evaluated by developing a code through the Simple Analysis Method. The results of SAM showed that the critical parameters of FPSE could satisfy the designed requirements. The heater of the FPSE was designed with the copper rectangular fins to enhance heat transfer, and the parametric study of the heater was performed with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software STAR-CCM+. The Performance Evaluation Criteria (PEC) was used to evaluate the heat transfer enhancement of the fins in the heater. The numerical results of the CFD program showed that pressure drop and Nusselt number ratio had a linear growth with the height of fins, and PEC number decreased as the height of fins increased, and the optimum height of the fin was set as 4 mm according to the minimum heat exchange surface area. This paper can provide theoretical supports for the design and numerical analysis of an FPSE for SRPSs.

The absence of a simple and general analytical model has been a problem in the design and analysis of desiccant-assisted air-conditioning systems. In this study, such an analytical model has been developed based on the approximate integral solution of the coupled transient ordinary differential equations for the heat and mass transfer processes in a desiccant wheel. It turned out that the initial conditions should be determined by the solution of four linear algebraic equations including the heat and mass transfer equations for the air flow as well as the energy and mass conservation equations for the desiccant bed. It is also shown that time-averaged exit air temperature and humidity relations could be given in terms of the heat and mass transfer effectiveness.

To improve the accuracy of the standard penetration test (SPT) results, smart measurement system, which considers the energy transfer ratio into the sampler (ETRSampler), is required. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of joints and rod length on the transferred energy into the sampler. The energy transfer ratios into the rod head (ETRHead) and ETRSampler, and the energy ratio from the head to the sampler (ERHS) were obtained using energy modules, which were installed at the rod head and above the SPT sampler. Linear regression analyses are conducted to correlate the ERHS with the number of joints, rod length, and SPT N-values. In addition, the dynamic resistances are calculated using both transferred energies into the rod head and into the sampler, and are compared with the corrected cone tip resistance measured from the cone penetration test (CPT). While the ETRHead are generally constant, but the ETRSampler and ERHS gradually decrease along the depth or the number of joints, except at certain depths with high SPT N-values. Thus, the ERHS can be estimated using the number of joints, rod length, and SPT N-values. The dynamic resistance evaluated by ESampler produces a better correlation with the corrected cone tip resistance than that by EHead. This study suggests that transferred energy into the SPT sampler may be effectively used for more accurate subsurface characterization.

A simple but accurate mathematical model is crucial for dynamic simulations and controller design of helical coil once-through steam generator (OTSG). This paper presents a three-region movable boundary dynamic model of the helical coil OTSG. Based on the secondary side fluid conditions, the OTSG is divided into subcooled region (two control volumes), two-phase region (two control volumes) and superheated region (three control volumes) with movable boiling boundaries between each region. The nonlinear dynamic model is derived based on mass, energy and momentum conservation equations. And the linear model is obtained by using the transfer function and state space transformation, which is a 37-order model of five input and three output. Validations are made under full-power steady-state condition and four transient conditions. Results show good agreements among the nonlinear model, linear model and the RELAP5 model, with acceptable errors. This model can be applied to dynamic simulations and controller design of helical coil OTSG with constant primary-side flow rate.
