Abstract Oligotrophic microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were tested for the continuous monitoring of low biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) by using artificial wastewater, containing glucose and glutamate, as check solution. Ten times diluted trace mineral solution was used to minimize the background current level, which is generated from the oxidation of nitrilotriacetate used as a chelating agent. The feeding rate of 0.53 ml/min could increase the sensitivity from 0.16 to 0.43 ${\mu}$A/(mg BOD/l) at 0.15 ml/min. The dynamic linear range of the calibration curve was between 2.0 and 10.0 mg BOD/l, and the response time to the change of 2 mg BOD/l was about 60 min. The current signal from an oligotroph-type MFCs increased with the increase in salts concentration, and the salt effect could be eliminated by 50 mM phosphate buffer.

A novel technique to measuret of viscoelastic properties of polymers is proposed to investigate complex Poisson's ratio as a function of frequency. The forced vibration responses for the samples under the normal and the shear deformation are to be measured with varying load masses. The measured data were used to obtain the viscoelastic properties of the material based on an accurate 2D numerical deformation model of the sample. The 2D model enabled us to exclude data correction by the empirical form factor used in 1D model. Comprehensive measurements of viscoelastic properties of two slightly varied silicone RTV rubber ($Silastic^{(R)}$ S2) compositions were performed. Standard composition (90% PDMS polymer + 10% catalyst) and modified composition (92.5% polymer + 7.5% catalyst) were tested in temperature range from $30^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$. Shear modulus, modulus of elasticity, loss factor, and both the real and the imaginary parts of the Poisson's ratio were determined for frequencies from 50 to 400Hz in the linear deformation regime (at relative deformations $10^{-4}{\sim}10^{-3}$).

A thermal flow sensor has been fabricated and characterized, consisting of a center resistive heater surrounded by two upstream and one downstream temperature sensing resistors. The heater and temperature sensing resistors are fabricated from nitrogen-doped(n-type) polycrystalline silicon carbide(poly-SiC) deposited by LPCVD(low pressure chemical vapor deposition) on LPCVD silicon nitride films on a Si substrate. Cavities were etched into the Si substrate from the front side to create suspended silicon nitride membranes carrying the poly-SiC elements. One upstream sensor is located $50{\mu}m$ from the heater and has a sensitivity of $0.73{\Omega}$/sccm with ${\sim}15\;ms$ rise time in a dynamic range of 1000 sccm. N-type poly-SiC has a linear negative temperature coefficient and a TCR(temperature coefficient of resistance) of $-1.24{\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$ from room temperature to $100^{\circ}C$.

On-line phase tracking of an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) and experimental vibration control of a composite beam with a sensing-patch are investigated. We propose a sensing-patch for the compensation of the interferometric non-linearity. In this paper. a sensing-patch that comprises an EFPI and a piezo ceramic(PZT) is fabricated and the characteristics of the sensing-patch are experimentally investigated. A simple and practical logic is applied for the real-time tracking of optical phase of an interferometer Experimental results show that the proposed sensing-patch does not have the non-linear behavior of conventional EFPI and hysteresis of piezoelectric material. Moreover, it has good strain resolution and wide dynamic sensing range. Finally, the vibration control with the developed sensing-patch has been performed using Fuzzy logic controller, and the possibility of sensing-patch as a sensoriactuator is considered.

This paper purposes on stimulating the dynamic behavior of a floating structure model with the image processing and the close-range photogrammetry, instead of the contact sensors. Previously, the movement of structures was presented by the exterior orientation estimation from a single camera following the space resection. The inverse resection yields to 6 orientation parameters of the floating structure, with respect to the camera coordinates system. The single camera solution of interest in applications is characterized by the restriction in terms of costs, unfavorable observation conditions, or synchronization demands when using multiple cameras. This paper discusses the theoretical determinations of camera exterior orientation by using the least squares adjustment, applied of the values from the DLT (Direct Linear Transformation) and the photogrammetric resection. This proposed method is applied to monitor motions of a floating model. The results of 6DOF (Six Degrees of Freedom) from the inverse resection were signified that applying appropriate initial values from DLT in the least square adjustment is effective in obtaining precise exterior orientation parameters. Therefore, the proposed method can be concluded as an efficient solution to simulate movements of the floating structure.

The objective of this study is to review the current stare of earthquake simulation techniques using the shaking table and check the reliability. One degree-of-freedom(d.o.f.)and three d.o.f. aluminium shear models were used and 4m$\times$4m 6 d.o.f. shaking table was excitated in one horizontal direction to simulate 1940 El centro earthquake accelerogram (NS component). When the acceleration history of shaking table is compared to the desired one, it can be found that the overall histories are very similar, but that the lower frequency range (0~2 Hz) of the actual excitation has generally lower amplitude than that of the desired in fourier transform amplitude. Free vibration and white noise tests have shown almost the same values for natural frequencies, but shown quite different values for damping ratios, that is, 1.37% in case of r\free vibration test vs 14.76% in case of white noise test. The time histories of story shear versus story drift show the globally linear elastic behaviors. But the elliptical shape of the histories with one of the axis being the stiffness of the story implies the effect of viscous damping.
A high performance liquid chromatography using photoreduction fluorescence detection was described for the analysis of saikosaponins. Saikosaponins were separated on an $NH_2$ column using acetonitrile and aqueous 2-tert-butylanthraquinone(t-BAQ) as mobile phase. Column effluent was passed through a 40cm PTFE capillary tube coiled around a 10W UV lamp to reduce t-BAQ to a highly fluorescent dihydroxyanthracene derivative which was detected by a fluorescence detector. The optimal concentration of t-BAQ was found to be $6{\times}10^{-5}M$ and the optimal reaction time to be 2 seconds. The detection limit for saikosaponin a and d by this method was found to be about 280ng and 80ng. The dynamic linear range was over two orders and the correlation coefficient of the calibration curve of them was 0.998.
The focus of this paper is on the numerical investigation of obliquely incident wav interactions with a system composed of fully submerged and floating dual buoy/vertical-flexible-membrane breakwaters placed in parallel with spacing between two systems. The fully submerged two systems allow surface and bottom gaps to enable wave transmission over and under the system. The problem is formulated based on the two-dimensional multi-domain hydro-elastic linear wave-body interaction theory. The hydrodynamic interaction of oblique incident waves with the combination of the rigid and flexible bodies was solved by the distribution of the simple sources (modified Bessel function of the second kind) that satisfy the Helmholz governing equation in fluid domains. A boundary element program for three fluid domains based on a discrete membrane dynamic model and simple source distribution method is developed. Using this developed computer program, the performance of various dual systems varying buoy radiuses and drafts, membrane lengths, gaps, spacing, mooring-lines stiffness, mooring types, water depth, and wave characteristics is thoroughly examined. It is found that the fully submerged and floating dual buoy/membrane breakwaters can, if it is properly tuned to the coming waves, have good performances in reflecting the obliquely incident waves over a wide range of wave frequency and headings.
This paper presents the details of indigenous development of the piezovibrocone and calibration chamber. The developed cone has a cylindrical friction sleeve of $150cm^2$ surface area, capped with a $60^{\circ}$ apex angle conical tip of $15cm^2$ cross sectional area. It has a hydraulic shaker, coupled to the cone penetrometer with a linear displacement unit. The hydraulic shaker can produce cyclic load in different types of wave forms (sine, Hover sine, triangular, rectangular and external wave) at a range of frequency 1-10 Hz with maximum amplitude of 10 cm. The piezovibrocone can be driven at the standard rate of 2 cm/sec using a loading unit of 10 ton capacity. The calibration chamber is of size $2m{\times}2m{\times}2m$. The sides of the chamber and the top as well as the bottom portions are rigid. It has a provision to apply confining pressure (to a maximum value of $4kg/cm^2$) through the flexible rubber membrane inlined with the side walls of the calibration chamber. The preliminary static as well as dynamic cone penetration tests have been done sand in the calibration chamber. From the experimental results, an attempt has been made to classify the soil based on friction ratio ($f_R$) and the cone tip resistance ($q_c$).
This article describes the research work involving the implementation of an Active Bracing System aimed at the modification of the initial dynamics of a laboratorial building structure to a new desired dynamics. By means of an adequate control force it is possible to assign an entirely new dynamics to a system by moving its natural frequencies and damping ratios to different values with the purpose of achieving a better overall structural response to external loads. In Civil Engineering applications, the most common procedures for controlling vibrations in structures include changing natural frequencies in order to avoid resonance phenomena and increasing the damping ratios of the critical vibration modes. In this study, the actual implementation of an active system is demonstrated, which is able to perform such modifications in a wide frequency range; to this end, a plane frame physical model with 4 degrees-of-freedom is used. The Active Bracing System developed is actuated by a linear motor controlled by an algorithm based on pole assignment strategy. The efficiency of this control system is verified experimentally by analyzing the control effect obtained with the modification of the initial dynamic parameters of the plane frame and observing the subsequent structural response.
