The electrical conductances for the thorium (IV) complexes with crown ethers have been measured in DMSO, and water solvents, and the oxidation-reduction reaction mechanisms, electron number and diffusion coefficients in the reversible reduction process have been examined by polarography and cyclic voltammography. The dissociation mole ratio of $Th^{4+}$ and nitrate ion are 1:1 and in aprotic solvent, and 1:4 in protic solvent like as water. The limiting molar conductances of all complexes in aprotic solvent have been found to be in the range of $92.2{\times}159$$ohm^{-1}cm^2mol^{-1}$. In aprotic solvent, DMSO, the reduction of each complex is reversible by one electron reduction of one step, and the range of diffusion coefficients is obserbed to be $5.83\;10^{-6}{\sim}6.90{\times}10^{-6}$. The complexes which have reduction step were hydrolyzed above at 1.8volt with reference saturated calomel electrode, generating the hydrogen gas. The reaction mechanisms of thorium (IV)-crown ether complexes appear as follows. ${Th_m(IV)L_n(H_2O)_x(NO_3)_{4y}}_=^{DMSO} {\overline{{Th_m(IV)L_n(H_2O)_x(NO_3)_{4y-1}}}^+ + NO_3-$
Sensor networks consist of small nodes with sensing, computation, and wireless communications capabilities. A number of routing protocols to transmit the data between the base station and sensor nodes have been proposed. Intanagonwiwat et al. proposed the directed diffusion in which the base station sends interest messages and waits for data from the nodes in the specific regions. Since the directed diffusion propagates every interest message to whole nodes in the network, it causes energy dissipation of nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel data propagation method, which limits the data transmission area according to a threshold value for reducing the energy consumption in the network. A fuzzy logic is exploited to determine the threshold value by considering the energy and density of all the deployed nodes. The simulation models are designed and implemented based on DEVS formalism which is theoretically well grounded means of expressing discrete event simulation models.

Silicon nanowires (Si NWs) have been extensively studied for nanoelectronics owing to their unique optical and electrical properties different from those of bulk silicon. For the development of Si NW devices, better understanding of oxidation behavior in Si NWs would be an important issue. For example, it is widely known that atomic scale roughness at the dielectric (SiOx)/channel (Si) interface can significantly affect the device performance in the nano-scale devices. However, the oxidation process at the atomic-scale is still unknown because of its complexity. In the present work, we investigated the oxidation behavior of Si NW in atomic scale by simulating the dry oxidation process using a reactive molecular dynamics simulation technique. We focused on the residual stress evolution during oxidation to understand the stress effect on oxidation behavior of Si NWs having two different diameters, 5 nm and 10 nm. We calculated the charge distribution according to the oxidation time for 5 and 10 nm Si NWs. Judging from this data, it was observed that the surface oxide layer started to form before it is fully oxidized, i.e., the active diffusion of oxygen in the surface oxide layer. However, it is well-known that the oxide layer formation on the Si NWs results in a compressive stress on the surface which may retard the oxygen diffusion. We focused on the stress evolution of Si NWs during the oxidation process. Since the surface oxidation results in the volume expansion of the outer shell, it shows a compressive stress along the oxide layer. Interestingly, the stress for the 10 nm Si NW exhibits larger compressive stress than that of 5 nm Si NW. The difference of stress level between 5 an 10 anm Si NWs is approximately 1 or 2 GPa. Consequently, the diameter of Si NWs could be a significant factor to determine the self-limiting oxidation behavior of Si NWs when the diameter was very small.
Birnessite, pyrolusite and hausmannite were synthesized and tested for the ability to oxidize Cr(III) to Cr(VI). These oxides differed in zero point of charge, surface area, and crystallinity. The kinetic study showed that Cr(III) oxidation on the Mn-oxide surface is a first-order reaction. The reaction rate was various for different oxide at different conditions. Generally the reaction by hausmannite, containing Mn(III), was faster than the others, and oxidation by pyrolusite was much slower. Solution pH and initial Cr(III) concentration had a significant effect on the reaction. Inhibited oxidation at higher pH and initial Cr(III) concentration could be due to the chance of Cr(III) precipitation or complexing on the oxide surface. Oxidations by birnessite and hausmannite were faster at lower pH, but pyrolusite exhibited increased oxidation capacity at higher pH in the range between 3.0 and 5.0. Reactions were also temperature sensitive. Although calculated activation energies for the oxidation reactions at pH 3.0 were higher than the general activation energy for diffusion, there is no experimental evidence to suggest which reaction is the rate limiting step.

Intramolecular excimer formation of 1, 3-di(1-pyrenyl)propane (Py-3-Py) and fluorescence polarization of 1, 6-diphenyl-1, 3, 5-hexatriene (DPH) were used to investigate the effects of barbiturates on the fluidity of model membranes of phosphatidycholine (SPMVPC), phosphatidylserine (SPMVPS), and phosphatidylinositol (SPMVPI) fractions of synaptosomal plasma membrane vesicles (SPMV) isolated from bovine cerebral cortex. In a dose-dependent manner, barbiturates decreased the excimer to monomer fluorescence intensity ratio (I'/I) of Py-3-Py and increased the anisotropy(r), rotational relaxation time (P), limiting anisotropy $(r_infty)$, and order parameter (S) of DPH in SPMVPC, SPMVPS and SPMVPI. This indicates that barbiturates decreased both the lateral and rotational diffusion of the probes in SPMVPC, SPMVPS and SPMVPI. The relative potencies of barbiturates in ordering the membranes were in the order: pentobarbital > hexobarbital > amobarbital > phenobarbital. This order correlates well with the anesthetic potencies of barbiturates and the potencies for enhancement of $\gamma$-aminobutyric acid-stimulated chloride uptake. Thus, it is strongly suggested that a close relationship might exist between the membrane ordering effects of barbiturates and the chloride fluxes across SPMV.
The adsorption ability of wood-based activated carbon to adsorb methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) from aqueous solution has been investigated. Adsorption studies were carried out on the batch experiment at different initial MB and CV concentrations (MB=150 mg/L~400 mg/L, CV=50 mg/L~350 mg/L), contact time, and temperature. The results showed that the MB and CV adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and intraparticle diffusion was the rate-limiting step. Adsorption equilibrium data of the adsorption process fitted very well to both Langmuir and Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity ($q_m$) by Langmuir constant was 416.7 mg/g for MB and 462.4 mg/g for CV. The thermodynamic parameters such as ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$ and ${\Delta}G^{\circ}$ were evaluated. The MB and CV adsorption process was found to be endothermic for the two dyes.
The polarographic behavior of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol(PAR) in acetonitrile solution was studied. In order to investigate the type of reduction current at every reduction step, dependence of limiting current on the height of mercury head, solution temperature, and concentration of PAR have been examined. The results were shown that the reduction current was controlled by diffusion. And the effect of proton donor such as water and phenol on DC polarograms of PAR and the reversibility of every reduction wave have been evaluated. Based on the experimental results, the polarographic reduction of PAR in acetonitrile solution occurred in two one-electron steps.
For the purpose of explaining the dewatering phenomena of potato slice soaked in concentrated solution three models were proposed. Earlier model cannot explain the dewatering phenomena of potato slice in concentrated solution because of limiting its condition which is necessary to build a model. Therefore other three models were suggested and a model based on Fick\`s second law of mass transport at infinite plate conditions and numerical analysis was test model for explaining dewatering phenomena of potato soaked in concentrated solution. Apparent diffusion coefficient of water could be readily estimated from model III, and it could explain adequately the difference of the dewatering phenomena of various soaking conditions.
Intramolecular excimer formation of 1,3-di(1-pyrenyl)propane (Py-3-Py) and fluorescence polarization of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) were used to investigate the effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH) on the bulk bilayer fluidity of the plasma membrane vesicles isolated from cultured osteoblasts (OB-PMV). In a dose-dependent manner, rat PTH-(1-34) [rPTH-(1-34)] increased the excimer to monomer fluorescence intensity ratio (I'/I) of Py-3-Py and decreased the anisotropy (r) of DPH in OB-PMV. This indicates that PTH increased both the lateral and rotational diffusion of the probes in OB-PMY. Selective quenching of DPH fluorescence by trinitrophenyl groups was utilized to examine the transbilayer fluidity asymmetry of OB-PMV. The anisotropy, limiting anisotropy, and order parameter of DPH in the inner monolayer were 0.024, 0.032, and 0.062 greater than calculated for the outer monolayer of OB-PMY. Selective quenching of DPH fluorescence by trinitrophenyl groups was also utilized to examine the transbilayer effects of PTH on the fluidity of OB-PMV. rPTH-(1-34) had a greater fluidizing effect on the outer monolayer as compared to the inner monolayer of OB-PMV. Thus, it has been proven that PTH exhibits a selective rather than nonselective fluidizing effect within transbilayer domains of OB-PMV.
Applications of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in gene therapy have been hampered by the low efficiency of gene transfer to these cells. In current transduction protocols, retrovirus particles with foreign genes make only limited contact with their target cells by passive diffusion and have short life spans, thereby limiting the chances of viral infection. We theorized that mechanically agitating the virus-containing cell suspensions would increase the movement of viruses and target cells, resulting in increase of contact between them. Application of our mechanical agitation for transduction process has increased the absorption of retrovirus particles more than five times compared to the previous static method without changing cell growth rate and viability. The addition of a mechanical agitation step increased transduction efficiency to 42%, higher than that of any other previously-known static transduction protocol.
