  • Watertight 25.8 kV/600 A/12.5 kA fault current limiters (FCLs) have successfully installed in five areas (Incheon, Seoul, Gyeong-gi, Daejeon, Suwon) on KEPCO power distribution line for the purpose of commercial demonstrations. The fault current limiting operation of this FCL, which includes functions of sensing, commutation, and reduction of fault currents, is perfectly completed within 1 cycle immediately after fault occurs. The performance of FCL was verified by short circuit test, impedance test, insulation test, temperature-rise test, and control test, etc at PT&T in LS industrial systems, which is the official certification institute in Korea. In 2013, and also the FCL field test was performed in order to test the protection coordination between conventional relays and FCL, on the 1.5 kA and 5.0 kA faults, which were made by connecting the Artificial Fault Generator (AFG) to the distribution line in test grid at KEPCO Power Testing Center. The next step of this project is to check the FCL conditions caused by real external environment, and acquire the various data from five regions installed with FCL. In this paper, we intend to explain the FCL specifications and performance characteristics, and check the expected effect by application of FCL to power distribution line based on the power system analysis of an application site.

  • MLP (Multi dimensional Limiting Process) is implemented to simulate shallow water flows, and its performance over conventional TVD limiters in multidimensional flows is verified through several numerical simulations. MLP was developed to control oscillations for multi-dimensional compressible flows and proved to improve accuracy, efficiency and robustness in compressible flows. In this study, we applies MLP to modeling shallow water equations(SWEs) given that the SWEs are amenable to be solved using the large range of numerical methods developed to deal with compressible flows and MLP has been yet used for SWEs. Simulation results through the benchmark tests show that MLP has favorable features such as numerical oscillation control and convergence behaviors comparable to the conventional limiters. Both numerical accuracy and stability are improved in multi-dimensional discontinuous flows.

  • This paper describes some design concepts and design parameters of RZ-SSB which allows full carrier insertion into the single side band to overcome the severe fading in aeronautical telecommunication, and it is described in ARINC Spec. in the name of AME(AM Equivalent), and the necessary transmission bandwidth of RZ-SSB is similar to that of a aeronautical telecommunication. As an amplitude limiter manage to remove the amplitude fading without degrading the quality of output signal, the receiver acts like the FM demodulators. Using the digital Signal Processing(DSP) techniques in the design of transceiver systems has become a performance enhancement of the signal quality and reliability, and making use of DSP, it's able to design low cost, compact transceiver and reduce its weight. For avionics systems is able to eliminate the inherent disadvantages in RZ-SSB, the results of experimental tests suggest that the adoption of RZ concepts is suitable for aeronautical telecommunication transceiver systems use in HF band.

  • The supersonic flow around tandem cavities was investigated by three- dimensional numerical simulations using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation with the $\kappa-\omega$ thrbulence model. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves, and the acoustic effect transmitted from wake flow to upstream. The upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split using van Leer's limiter was used as the numerical method. Numerical calculations were performed by the parallel processing with time discretizations carried out by the 4th-order Runge-Kutta method. The aspect ratio of cavities are 3 for the first cavity and 1 for the second cavity. The ratio of cavity interval to depth is 1. The ratio of cavity width to depth is 1 in the case of three dimensional flow. The Mach number and the Reynolds number were 1.5 and $4.5{\times}10^5$, respectively. The characteristics of the dominant frequency between two-dimensional and three-dimensional flows were compared, and the characteristics of the second cavity flow due to the fire cavity flow cavity flow was analyzed. Both two dimensional and three dimensional flow oscillations were in the 'shear layer mode', which is based on the feedback mechanism of Rossiter's formula. However, three dimensional flow was much less turbulent than two dimensional flow, depending on whether it could inflow and outflow laterally. The dominant frequencies of the two dimensional flow and three dimensional flows coincided with Rossiter's 2nd mode frequency. The another dominant frequency of the three dimensional flow corresponded to Rossiter's 1st mode frequency.

  • Quench behavior of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) with various pattern shapes was investigated. The pattern shapes employed were meander, bi-spiral, and spiral shapes of identical line width, gap and margin. SFCLs were fabricated from YBCO thin films grown on two-inch diameter $Al_2O_3$ substrates under the same conditions. Resistance rise of current limiting elements was low at a spiral shape before the whole quench completion, which may act as a disadvantage for simultaneous quench in serial connection between current limiting elements, but the temperature tended to have similar values at higher voltages. On the other hand, bi-spiral shape was severe at insulation level between current limiting lines. When these aspects were considered, we concluded that a meander shape was appropriate to design for a resistive SFCL based on thin films except the concentration of electric field at edge areas of strip lines.

  • An advanced method of Relaxed Static Stability (RSS) is utilized for improving the aerodynamic performance of modern version supersonic jet fighter aircraft. The flight control system utilize RSS criteria in both longitudinal and lateral-directional axes to achieve performance enhancements and improve stability. The T-50 advanced trainer employs the RSS concept in order to improve the aerodynamic performance and the flight control law in order to guarantee aircraft stability. The longitudinal two modes are the short period with high frequency and the phugoid mode with low frequency. The design goals of longitudinal control laws is concerned with the short period damping and frequency optimization using lower order equivalent system and utilizing the requirement of MIL-F-8785C. Analysis of short period mode has been and continues to be performed This paper addresses the analysis of aircraft phugoid node characteristics such as damping, natural frequency, and analysis of aircraft pitch motion that impacted by angle of attack limiter and auto pitch attitude control law.

  • We have performed the current and voltage loading tests of resistive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLS) based on $YBa_2$$Cu_3$$O_{7}$(YBCO) films with the diameter of 2 inch. The SFCL consists of meander-type YBCO stripes covered with 200 nm Au layer grown in situ for current shunt and heat dispersion at hot spots. The minimum quench current of an SFCL unit was about 25 Apeak. Seven SFCL units were connected in parallel fur the current load ing tests at power source of 100 $V_{rms}$ $/2,000A_{rms}$. This SFCL units had maximum limiting current of 170 Apeak during the fault instant and then successfully controlled the fault current below 100 Apeak within 1~2 msec after short circuit. Increased short current also reduced the quench completion time with little change of current limiting characterization. We connected six SFCL units in series fur the voltage loading tests at power source of $1,200 V_{rms}$/170 $A_{rms}$ at this time. The shunt resistors were inserted into each SFCL unit to eliminate power imbalance originated from serial connection of SFCL units. Each SFCL unit was quenched simultaneously during the fault condition. The current increased up to 40 $A_{peak}$ and decreased to 14 $A_{peak}$ after 3 cycles. Quench was completed within 1 msec after the fault. We confirmed operating characteristics of 140 kVA($120 A_{rms}$ $\times$ 1,200 $V_{rms}$) SFCL and presented the manufacturing possibility of 3.3 kV SFCL using 4 inch YBCO films.BCO films.lms.

  • We investigated resistance development in $Au/YBa_2Cu_3O_7(YBCO)$ thin film meander lines during high-power faults. The meander lines were fabricated by patterning 300 nm thick YBCO films coated with 200 nm thick gold layers into meander lines. A gold film grown on the back side of the substrate was also patterned into a meander line. The front meander line was connected to a high-power fault-test circuit and the back line to a DC power supply. Resistance of both lines was measured during the fault. They were immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment. Behavior of the resistance development prior to quench completion could be understood better by comparing resistance of the front meander lines with that of the back. Quench completion point could be determined clearly. Resistance and temperature at the quench completion point were not affected by applied field strength. The experimental results were analyzed quantitatively with the concept of heat transfer within the meander lines/substrate and to the surrounding liquid nitrogen. In analysis, the fault period was divided into three regions: flux-flow region, region prior to quench completion, and region after quench completion. Resistance was calculated for each region, reflecting the observation for quench completion. The calculated resistance in three regions was joined seamlessly and agreed well with data.

  • We investigated the voltage applicable to $Au/YBa_2Cu3O_7$ (YBCO) meander lines. The meander line was fabricated by patterning Au/YBCO thin films grown on sapphire substrates by photolithography. It was subjected to simulated AC fault currents, and the resistance was measured and analyzed. The samples were immersed in liquid nitrogen during the experiment for effective cooling. The voltage applicable to the meander lines depended on the fault duration. Dependence was strong at short fault durations, and weak at long durations. When the voltage was plotted as a function of the fault duration on a log-log scale, data fell more or less on straight lines for all meander lines. In other words, the voltage applicable to Au/YBCO meander lines on sapphire substrates was inversely proportional to $t^b$, where t is the fault duration and b ranges from 0.4 to 0.5. The results were analyzed quantitatively with the concept of heat balance. Under adiabatic condition, the voltage is to be inversely proportional to $t^{0.5}$ for all samples. Less value of b for some samples is thought to be due to cooling of the samples by liquid nitrogen.
