Compton imaging is often recognized as a potentially more valuable 3-D technique in nuclear medicine than conventional emission tomography. Due to inherent computational limitations, however, it has been of a difficult problem to reconstruct images with good accuracy. In this work we show that the row-action maximum likelihood algorithm (RAMLA), which have proven useful for conventional tomographic reconstruction, can also be applied to the problem of 3-D reconstruction of cone-beam projections from Compton scattered data. The major advantage of RAMLA is that it converges to a true maximum likelihood solution at an order of magnitude faster than the standard expectation maximiation (EM) algorithm. For our simulations, we first model a Compton camera system consisting of the three pairs of scatterer and absorber detectors placed at x-, y- and z-axes, and generate conical projection data using a software phantom. We then compare the quantitative performance of RAMLA and EM reconstructions in terms of the percentage error. The net conclusion based on our experimental results is that the RAMLA applied to Compton camera reconstruction significantly outperforms the EM algorithm in convergence rate; while computational costs of one iteration of RAMLA and EM are about the same, one iteration of RAMLA performs as well as 128 iterations of EM.
The accuracy of rural land cover using airborne multispectral images and LEAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data was analyzed. Multispectral image consists of three bands in green, red and near infrared. Intensity image was derived from the first returns of LIDAR, and vegetation height image was calculated by difference between elevation of the first returns and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) derived from the last returns of LIDAR. Using maximum likelihood classification method, three bands of multispectral images, LIDAR vegetation height image, and intensity image were employed for land cover classification. Overall accuracy of classification using all the five images was improved to 85.6% about 10% higher than that using only the three bands of multispectral images. The classification accuracy of rural land cover map using multispectral images and LIDAR images, was improved with clear difference between heights of different crops and between heights of crop and tree by LIDAR data and use of LIDAR intensity for land cover classification.

This study focused on extracting an efficient method in the fruit cropping distribution mapping with various classification methods using multi-temporal satellite images and Geographic Information Systems(GIS). For this study, multi-temporal Landsat TM images, in observation data and existing fruit cropping area statistics were used to compare and analyze the properties of fruit cropping and seasonal distribution per classification method. As a result, this study concludes that Maximum Likelihood Method with earlier autumn satellite image was most efficient for the fruit cropping mapping using Landsat TM image. In addition, it was clarified that cropping area per administrative boundary was prepared and distribution pattern was identified efficiently using GIS spatial analysis.
In this paper we are attempted to quantitative classification of the three object color regions on a RGB image using of an improved ML(Maximum Likelihood) classification method. A RGB color image consists of three bands i.e., red, green and blue. Therefore it has a 3 dimensional structure in view of the spectral and spatial elements. The 3D structural yokels were projected in RGB cube wherefrom the ML method applied. Between the conventionally and easily usable Box classification and the statistical ML classification based on Bayesian decision theory, we compared and reviewed. Using the ML method we obtained a good segmentation result to classify positive cell nucleus, negative cell Nucleus and background un a immuno-histological breast carcinoma image. Hopefully it is available to diagnosis and prognosis for cancer patients.
Penalized-likelihood (PL) reconstruction methods for transmission tomography are known to provide improved image quality for reduced dose level by efficiently smoothing out noise while preserving edges. Unfortunately, however, most of the edge-preserving penalty functions used in conventional PL methods contain at least one free parameter which controls the shape of a non-quadratic penalty function to adjust the sensitivity of edge preservation. In this work, to avoid difficulties in finding a proper value of the free parameter involved in a non-quadratic penalty function, we propose a new adaptive method of space-variant smoothing with a simple quadratic penalty function. In this method, the smoothing parameter is adaptively selected for each pixel location at each iteration by using the image roughness measured by a pixel-wise standard deviation image calculated from the previous iteration. The experimental results demonstrate that our new method not only preserves edges, but also suppresses noise well in monotonic regions without requiring additional processes to select free parameters that may otherwise be included in a non-quadratic penalty function.

This paper proposes an image segmentation algorithm based on fusion of range and intensity images. Based on Bayesian theory, a priori knowledge is encoded by the Markov random field (MRF). A maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator is constructed using the features extracted from range and intensity images. Objects are approximated by local planar surfaces in range images, and the parametric space is constructed with the surface parameters estimated pixelwise. In intensity images the ${\alpha}$-trimmed variance constructs the intensity feature. An image is segmented by optimizing the MAP estimator that is constructed using a likelihood function based on edge information. Computer simulation results shw that the proposed fusion algorithm effectively segments the images independentl of shadow, noise, and light-blurring.

The aim of remotely sensed data classification is to produce the best accuracy map of the earth surface assigning each pixel to its appropriate category of the real-world. The classification of satellite multi-spectral image data has become tool for generating ground cover map. Many classification methods exist. In this study, MLC(Maximum Likelihood Classification), ANN(Artificial neural network), SVM(Support Vector Machine), Naive Bayes classifier algorithms are compared using IKONOS image of the part of Dalsung Gun, Daegu area. Two preprocessing methods are performed-PCA(Principal component analysis), ICA(Independent Component Analysis). Boosting algorithms also performed. By the combination of appropriate feature selection pre-processing and classifier, the best results were obtained.

This paper proposes novel texture segmentation method using Bayesian estimation method and neural networks. We use multi-scale wavelet coefficients and the context information of neighboring wavelets coefficients as the input of networks. The output of neural networks is modeled as a posterior probability. The context information is obtained by HMT(Hidden Markov Tree) model. This proposed segmentation method shows better performance than ML(Maximum Likelihood) segmentation using HMT model. And post-processed texture segmentation results as using multi-scale Bayesian image segmentation technique called HMTseg in each segmentation by HMT and the proposed method also show that the proposed method is superior to the method using HMT.

In this paper, we propose a land cover pattern classifier for remote sensing image by using neuro-fuzzy
algorithm. The proposed pattem classifier has a 3-layer feed-forward architecture that is derived from generic
fuzzy perceptrons, and the weights are con~posed of h u y sets. We also implement a neuro-fuzzy pattern
classification system in the Visual C++ environment. To measure the performance of this, we compare it with
the conventional neural networks with back-propagation learning and the Maximum-likelihood algorithms.
We classified the remote sensing image into the eight classes covered the majority of land cover feature,
selected the same training sites. Experimental results show that the proposed classifier performs well
especially in the mixed composition area having many classes rather than the conventional systems.

Remote sensing is an efficient technology for observing and monitoring the land surfaces inaccessible to humans. This research proposes a methodology for improving the accuracy of the land cover classification using the Landsat-8 operational land imager(OLI) image. The proposed methodology consists of the following steps. First, the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI) and normalized difference water index(NDWI) images are generated from the given Landsat-8 OLI image. Then, a new image is generated by adding both NDVI and NDWI images to the original Landsat-8 OLI image using the layer-stacking method. Finally, the maximum likelihood classification(MLC), and support vector machine(SVM) methods are separately applied to the original Landsat-8 OLI image and new image to identify the five classes namely water, forest, cropland, bare soil, and artificial structure. The comparison of the results shows that the utilization of the layer-stacking method improves the accuracy of the land cover classification by 8% for the MLC method and by 1.6% for the SVM method. This research proposes a methodology for improving the accuracy of the land cover classification by using the layer-stacking method.
