In a detection system based on laser light scattering, focusing an excitation laser beam into a focal point of a channel in a microfluidic chip is important for obtaining the highest excitation intensity, and consequently for obtaining a laser light scattering signal using a photodetector with a high efficiency. In this paper, we present a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic chip consisting of an integrated PDMS microlens for cell detection based on laser light scattering. We fabricated PDMS microlens for optical detection system by simply putting down on PDMS chips. The PDMS microlens was fabricated by photoresist reflow and replica molding. This fabrication technique is simple and has an excellent property in terms of the microlens and a high-dimensional accuracy. The PDMS microlens integrated on the PDMS microfluidic chip has been verified to improve the laser intensity, and accordingly, the signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity of laser light scattering detection for red blood cells(RBCs)

The penetration depth and the size distribution of the droplets of fuel sprays are important in the operation of spark-ignition MPI engines. A fluorescence/scattering image technique for droplet sizing was applied to measure th edroplet size distribution in non-evaporating gasoline sprays. The fluorescence and scattering lights were imaged simultaneously by the two-dimensional visualization system composed of a laser sheet, a doubling prism, optical filters, and a CCD camera. Quantitative droplet size distributions were extracted from evaluating the ratio of the two light densities. The mean droplet size measured by the fluorescence/scattering technique was compared with the result obtained by the enlarged photographs of droplets. The fluorescence/scattering image technique also gives the useful information of the characteristics of droplet impingement in a inclined wall.
We present real.time, rapid detection of Mycoplasma pneumonia in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) inside a Y.channel polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic device by means of optical fiber monitoring of latex immunoagglutination. The latex immunoagglutination assay was performed with serially diluted Mycoplasma pneumonia solutions using highly carboxylated polystyrene particles of 390nm and 500nm diameter conjugated with monoclonal anti. Mycoplasma pneumonia . Proximity optical fibers were located around the viewing cell of the device, which were used to measure the increase in 45${\b{o}}$ forward light scattering of the immunoagglutinated particles. The detection limit was less than 50 $pgml^{-1}$ both for 390nm and 500nm microspheres with the detection time less than 90 seconds.
AThe effect of localized surface plasmon on silicon substrates was studied using silver nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were formed by self-arrangement through the surface energy using rapid thermal annealing (RTA) technique after the thin nanolayer of silver was deposited by thermal evaporation. By the theoretical calculation based on Mie scattering and dielectric function of air, indium tin oxide (ITO), and silver, the strong peak of scattering cross section of silver nanoparticles was found at 358 nm for air, and 460 nm for ITO, respectively. Accordingly, the strong suppression of reflectance under the condition of induced light of $30^{\circ}$ occurred at the specific wavelength which is almost in accordance with peak of scattering cross section. When the external quantum efficiency was measured using silicon solar cells with silver nanoparticles, there was small enhancement peak near the 460 nm wavelength in which the light was resonated between silver nanoparticles and ITO.

This paper presents an experimental analysis of the growth and oxidation processes of soot particles generated in an isooctane diffusive laminar flame due to incomplete combustion. The effects of iron-based diagnostics were employed to measure the elastic scattering light from soot particles in a flame at different flame heights, and the differential scattering coefficients were calculated through a calibration process. The growth and oxidation of soot particles in flame was investigated by comparing differential scattering coefficients, and the soot volume fraction was seen to decrease in the soot oxidation process. In the same manner, the differential scattering coefficients were calculated for iron-based fuel-additive seeded flame, and these coefficients were revealed to be smaller than those obtained in the fuel-additive unseeded flame. In addition, transmission through the radial direction of the flame was measured, and transmission in the soot oxidation regime was approximately 5% higher for the seeded flame. The propensity of the data coincided well with the differential scattering coefficients, and it can be concluded that the iron component of the fuel additive plays a crucial role as a catalyst, which eventually enhanced soot particle oxidation.
It is significant to simulate scattering of light within media for realistic image synthesis; however, this requires costly computation. This paper introduces a practical image-space approximation technique for interactive subsurface scattering. We use a general two-pass approach, which creates transmitted irradiance samples onto shadow maps and computes illumination using the shadow maps. We estimate single scattering efficiently using a method similar to common shadow mapping with adaptive deterministic sampling. A hierarchical technique is applied to evaluate multiple scattering, based on a diffusion theory. We further accelerate rendering speed by tabulating complex functions and utilizing level of detail. We demonstrate that our technique produces high-quality images of animated scenes with blurred shadow at hundreds frames per second on graphics hardware. It can be integrated into existing interactive systems easily.

Skin darkness is the source of trouble to many women. Skin darkness is the state that while skin redness and brightness are reduced, skin yellowness is increased. Skin translucency which is measured by skin color, especially brightness is an another expression of skin darkness. Skin brightness is usually expressed by L value of $L^{*} \;a^{*}\; b^{*}$ (CIELAB color space system). However, it is hard to find the relationship between L value and perceptive efficacy such as translucency because the L value is just a factor of evaluation of skin darkness. The skin with high translucency has high scattering reflective light value than low value. In this study, we measured the skin translucency of 20 ~ 30 ages men and women face by both our designed previous device which use polarized light to detect surface and scatter reflective light independently and $Lumiscan^{TM}$ which is improved designed to confirm our new device working ability by calculation of relationship between trnaslucency and scattering reflective light value. The result of this study indicate that there is a high correlation (R = 0.732, p < 0.01) between translucency and scattering reflective light value, and suggest that $Lumiscan^{TM}$ is portable and easy measuring device more that previous device.
In the present study, the multiple light scattering method was used for analysis of early hardening behavior of natural hydraulic lime (NHL) containing inorganic additives. In order to improve the properties of self-manufactured NHL, blast furnace slag and three types of gypsum were mixed with mixing ratio, and a water/solid ratio of fresh NHL paste was fixed 0.6. The fresh pastes in flat-bottomed cylindrical glass tubes were placed in the instrument. The backscattering flux (BS) of light from fresh pastes was then periodically measured at 10 minutes intervals the entire length of the sample (55mm) at $23^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The rate of increase of BS, slope of a linear equation to the mean value of BS (%) as a function of hydration time, was increased from 0.02 to 0.38 BS %/hour due to addition of blast furnace slag and gypsum. In the case of addition of hemi-hydrate, BS (%) and rate of increase in BS were highest.
We investigated light extraction film based on polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) for application in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). At least 30 seconds of direct UV irradiation process for curing PDLC film on a bottom-emitting OLEDs was successfully achieved without damage on the intrinsic properties of the OLED. We demonstrated that high haze and transmittance can be tuned simultaneously by controlling the UV curing time. By adding PDLC as an external layer without any additional treatment, the light scattering and extraction is increased. Consequently, a PDLC scattering film with 89.8% and 59.9 of total transmittance and haze respectively, achieved about 16% of light intensity enhancement from integrating sphere measurement.
We investigate transmission of light in nanoscale structures. We present spatial and temporal domain measurements of the dephasing of surface plasmon excitations in metal films with periodic nano-hole arrays. By probing coherent spatial SP propagation lengths of a few f1. $\mu$m and an ultrafast decay of the SP polarization on a 10 fs timescale, we demonstrate that the SP transmission peaks are homogeneously broadened by the SP radiative lifetime. The pronounced wavelength and hole size dependence of the dephasing rate shows that the microscopic origin of the conversion of SP into light is a Rayleigh-like scattering by the periodic hole array. We have experimentally studied the dephasing of surface plasmon excitations in metallic nano-hole arrays. By relating nanoscopic SP propagation, ultrafast light transmission and optical spectra, we demonstrate that the transmission spectra of these plasmonic bandgap structures are homogeneously broadened. The spectral line shape and dephasing time are dominated by Rayleigh scattering of SP into light and can varied over a wide range by controlling the resonance energy and/or hole radius. This opens the way towards designing SP nano-optic devices and spatially and spectrally tailoring light -matter interactions on nanometer length scales.
