  • The present study was undertaken to determine whether p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase participates in the regulation of vascular smooth muscle contraction by endothelin-I (ET-1) in rat thoracic aorta. ET-1 induced a sustained contraction. In contrast, both the intracellular Ca$\^$2+/ and myosin light chain (MLC) phosphorylations were not sustained.(omitted)

  • The electrical properties of the GaN-based green light emitting diodes(LEDs) with the Mg-doped p-GaN layer activated in $N_2$ or $O_2$ ambient have been compared. For the $N_2$ -ambient activation the current-voltage behavior of LEDs has been found to be improved when the Mg dopants activation was performed in the higher temperature. However, for the $O_2$-ambient activation the current-voltage characteristic has been observed to be enhanced when the Mg dopants activation was carried out in the lower temperature. The minimum forward voltage at 20mA was obtained to be 4.8 V for LEDs with the p-GaN layer activated at $900^{\circ}C$ in the $N_2$ ambient and 4.5V for LEDs with the p-GaN layer treated at $700^{\circ}C$ in the $O_2$ambient, repectively. The forward voltage reduction of the LEDs treated in the $O_2$-ambient may be related to the oxygen co-doping of the p-GaN layer during the activation process. The $O_2$ -ambient activation process is useful for the enhancement of the LED performance as well as the fabrication process since this process can activate the Mg dopants in the low temperature.

  • We report the experimental finding that there exists a transition of magnetization reversal process with varying the applied field in Co/Pd multilayer. We have measured the wall-motion speed V and the nucleation rate R during magnetization reversal via time-resolved direct domain observation, where the magnetization reversal process of Co/Pd multilayer is found to take a transition from thermal activation process to viscous process at the critical field of about 1.87 H$\_$C/ (coercivity). In the thermal activation regime, we find that the field dependences of two activation volumes for the wall-motion process and the nucleation process are different with each other, which reveals that the wall-motion and nucleation experience completely different interactions. In the viscous regime, we find that the wall-mobility is much smaller than a typical value for the sandwiched Co films, which implies that the Co/Pd interfaces in multilayer substantially contribute to the dynamic dissipation.

  • Dental caries, the most common oral disease, is a multifactorial disease caused by interactions among bacteria within the dental plaque, food, and saliva, resulting in tooth destruction. Streptococcus mutans has been strongly implicated as the causative organism in dental caries and is frequently isolated from human dental plaque. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a technique that involves the activation of photosensitizer by light in the presence of tissue oxygen, resulting in the production of reactive radicals capable of inducing cell death. Postantibiotic effect (PAE) is defined as the duration of suppressed bacterial growth following brief exposure to an antibiotic. In this study, the in vitro PAE of PDT using erythrosine and light emitting diode on S. mutans ATCC 25175 was investigated. The PAE of PDT for 1 s irradiation and 3 s irradiation were 1.65 h and 2.1 h, respectively. The present study thus confirmed PAE of PDT using erythrosine on S. mutans.

  • Because UV wavelength lights can activate photocatalysts, plasma is used as a light source of a photocatalytic reactor. Even though plasma has good intensity for photo reaction, substrate of catalyst coating was limited by the geometry of plasma generator. Usually bead type substrate was used for a pack bed type reactor. Honeycomb monolith type substrate was used with UV lamps instead plasma, due to the light penetration the honeycomb monolith length was too short to show good activity In this study a photocatalytic reactor, which is using a honeycomb monolith substrate, was investigated with plasma as an activation light source. As a parametric study the effects of 1311owing factors on plasma generation and power consumption are examined; supply voltage, substrate length, environment condition, catalyst loading and ratio. Using the test results, the practicability test was done with simulated synthetic gases representing bad smells and automotive exhaust gases.

  • We studied the folilar wiping effects of antioxidants (ascorbate, glutathione and sodium azide), which effectively inhibited the chlorophyll bleaching or completely recorved the early stage of photosynthesis of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, on photosynthesis, stomatal resistance, free sugar, starch, and total saponin contents of ginseng under the excess light intensity (45 kLux) during 6 days. Ascorbate and glutathione, endogenous antioxidant, recovered photosynehtsis and stomatal resistance, and reduced the photoinhibition by the excess light intensity (45 kLux) on free sugar, starch and total saponin contents. But sodium azide, exogenous $^{1}O_2$ quencher, showed negative effect. Therefore, we assumed that carbohydrates and saponin metabolisms of ginseng by antioxidants (ascorbate, glutathione) were normal. For the reduction of inhibition by excess light in ginseng a program for the higher activation of antioxidants and antioxidative enzymes in ginseng leaf will be desirable. Key words Antioxidants, ascorbate, glutathione, Photoinhibition, ginseng.

  • We have prepared hydrogenated amophous silicon (a-si : H) films with superlattice structure by hydrogen radical anneling(HRA) technique. We have studied the preparation of a-Si :H films by HRA and the optical & electronic characteristics. Optical band gap and the hydrogen contents in the a Si : H film is decreased as HRA time increased. We first report a -Si : H film prepared by periodicdeposition of a-Si : H layer and HRA have the superlattice structure using TEM . After 1 hour light soaking on the a-Si :H film prepared by HRA, there are no difference in the temperatre dependence of dark conductivity and the conductivity activation energy. An excellent stability for light in a-Si :H films by HRA can be explained using the long-range structural relaxation of the amorphous network and the propertiesof light -induced defects(LID) proposed by Fritzsche.

  • Ultraviolet light (UV)-induced cellular response has been studied by numerous investigators for many years. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as new regulators of diverse cellular process; however, little is known about the role of lncRNAs in the cellular response to UV treatment. Here, we demonstrate that levels of lncRNA-HOTTIP significantly increases after UV stimulation and regulates the UV-mediated cellular response to UV through the coordinate activation of its neighboring gene Hoxa13 in GC-1 cells (spermatogonia germ cell line). UV-induced, G2/M-phase arrest and early apoptosis can be regulated by lncRNA-HOTTIP and Hoxa13. Furthermore, lncRNA-HOTTIP can up-regulate ${\gamma}-H_2AX$ and p53 expression via Hoxa13 in UV-irradiated GC-1 cells. In addition, p53 has the ability to regulate the expression of both lncRNA-HOTTIP and Hoxa13 in vitro and in vivo. Our results provide new data regarding the role lncRNAs play in the UV response in spermatogenic cells.

  • It was proved that the cell growth followed a photo-inhibition model in light-limited turbidostat cultivation, having 1.06 (1/h) of maximum specific growth rate and 0.00094(kcal/$cm^2$/h) and 0.063 (kcal/$cm^2$/h) as half saturation and light inhibition constants, repectively. ${\beta}$-carotene production showed a growth related porcess. And the activation energy of Dunaliella salina was roughly estimated as 12.36 (kcal/mole) in employing Arrhenius relationship. It should also point out that relatively much porduction of ${\beta}$-carotene was observed at hight light intensity with yieding 1.04 (mg-carotene/g-dry cell/day) of specific product production rate while the cell growth was decreased. The optimal conditions of producing ${\beta}$-carotene in turbiodostat cultivation were as follows: $7.5{\times}10^{-3}$(kcal/$cm^2$/h)of light intensity, 2 (mM) and 50(mM) of nitrate and sodium bicarbonate concentrations and 100(ml/h) of $CO_2$ flow rate.
