Characteristics of Vortical Jet Structures of a Hydrofoil

  • Oscillating foil propulsion, the engineering application of fish-like movement of a hydrofoil, has received in recent decades as a possible competitor for propellers. The oscillating foil produces an effective angle of attack, resulting in a normal force vector with thrust and lift components, and it can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. We have explored propulsion hydrodynamics as a concept in wake flow pattern. The present study has been examined various conditions such as oscillating frequencies and amplitudes in NACA0010 profile. Flow visualizations showed that high thrust was associated with the generation of moderately strong vortices, which subsequently combine with trailing-edge vorticity leading to the formation of a reverse $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortex street. Vortex generation was inherent to jet production and playeda fundamental role in the wake dynamics. And it was shown that the strong thrust coefficient obtained as the Strouhal number was larger.

  • Load/Unload technology has more benefits than the conventional CSS technology. However, it remains unsolved technical problem on the unloading process. While the slider climbs up the ramp at the outer edge of the disk, the possibility of the slider-disk contact by lift-off force and rebound of the slider increases. This paper focuses on no slider-disk contact. To prevent the slider-disk contact, we apply the disk bump on disk outer edge proceeding unload. Firstly, in the simulation, the bump dimension is determined by changing bump design parameters. Secondly, dynamic stability of slider have to be checked on disk bump before unload analysis, and unload analysis is performed by applying stable bump shapes to unload simulation. Thirdly, we select optimal bump shape to improve unload performance by unload analysis. Finally, in the experiment, the disk bump is mechanically manufactured by pressing disk surface using diamond tip. That is variously processed by changing pressing pressure. After confirming bump shape by nano-scanner, proper bump shape is applied to real experimental unload process. Through this investigation, we propose the optimal bump design to prevent the slider-disk contact, and then we can realize improved unloading performance.

방패연의 방구멍 효과에 대한 분석 (The Analysis of Wind Hole Effect for The Bangpae Kite)

  • 우리 민족 고유의 전통 문화유산인 방패연은 안정적인 장방형 표면에 다양한 그림과 글씨로 예술성을 표현하고 있으며 가운데 방구멍이 있음으로 해서 우수한 비행성능을 갖는다. 본 논문에서는, 방구멍이 연의 성능에 미치는 공기역학적인 효과를 분석하기 위해 다양한 비율의 방패연 모델에 대한 공력 측정과 방구멍을 관통하는 공기흐름을 가시화하는 실험을 수행하였으며 이를 분석한 결과 방구멍은 경계층 분리를 제어하는 날개 고양력 장치의 슬롯 시스템과 유사한 기능을 발휘한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이는 우리 조상들이 서양의 비행기 발명 이전에 고양력장치의 원리를 이해하여 연의 비행 성능 개선에 효과적으로 적용하여 왔다는 것을 증명한다.

비평면 지면을 비행하는 FAST의 정상상태 공력특성 (Steady Aerodynamic Characteristics of FAST Flying over Nonplanar Ground Surface)

  • 경계요소법을 이용하여 동체에 탠덤 날개를 결합한 FAST가 비평면 지면을 비행할 때의 공력 특성을 파악하였다. 본 수치해석 기법을 이용하여 계산한 결과를 실험 및 타 전산해석 결과와 비교하여 검증을 수행하였다. 날개-동체를 결합한 운송체의 공력 특성을 분석하여 안정성 확보 및 충분한 공기부상력을 가지도록 운송체 상부의 탠덤 날개를 배치하는 공력설계를 수행하였다. FAST에서 탠덤 날개가 동체의 전두부와 후두부에 위치하고, 하단 익단판을 설치하였을 때 최대 양력 성능을 얻을 수 있었다. FAST의 안정성은 탠덤날개의 플래퍼론을 이용하여 확보 가능하다.

Effect of windshields on the aerodynamic performance of a four-box bridge deck

  • A new type of bridge deck section consisting of four-box decks, two side decks for vehicular traffic lanes and two middle decks for railway traffic, has been experimentally investigated for determining its aerodynamic properties. The eight flutter derivatives were determined by the Iterative Least Squares (ILS) method for this new type of four-box deck model, with two windshields of 30 mm and 50 mm height respectively. Wind tunnel experiments were performed for angles of attack α = ±6°, ±4°, ±2° and 0° and Re numbers of 4.85×105 to 6.06×105 and it was found that the four-box deck with the 50 mm windshields had a better aerodynamic performance. Also, the results showed that the installation of the windshields reduced the values of the lift coefficient CL for the negative angles attack in the range of -6° to 0°, but the drag coefficient CD increased in the positive angle of attack range. However, galloping instability was not encountered for the tested reduced wind speeds, of up to 9.8. The aerodynamic force coefficients and the flutter derivatives for the four-box deck model were consistent with the results reported for the Messina triple-box bridge deck, but were different from those reported for the twin-box bridge decks.

Gurney플랩과 제트 플랩을 혼용한 유동제어 기법에 관한 수치적 연구 (Numerical Study About Flow Control Using Blending Gurney Flap with Jet Flap)

  • 본 연구에서는 NACA 0012 익형 주위의 비교적 높은 레이놀즈수 유동장에 대한 Gurney 플랩과 제트 플랩을 혼용한 유동제어 기법의 유동제어 특성에 대하여 비정렬 격자계를 사용하는 수치적 기법을 이용하여 살펴보았다. 혼합제어 기법의 유동제어 특성을 파악하기 위하여 유동제어에 따른 공력계수 및 모멘트 계수의 변화를 혼합제어 기법을 구성하는 각각의 유동제어 기법들의 결과들과 비교하여 살펴보았다. 혼합제어 기법의 경우 제트 플랩만을 고려한 경우에 비하여 상당히 낮은 무차원 세기의 제트를 이용하여도 유사한 양력 향상 특성을 획득할 수 있었으며, Gurney 플랩만을 이용한 경우에 나타나는 항력의 증가를 완화시켜 주었다.

  • In order to estimate a yacht sail performance, measuring system of aerodynamic forces acting on the yacht sail is constructed and experiments of flexible model sail are carried out at the medium-size subsonic wind tunnel of Chungnam National University. Experimental results for a flexible sail are compared with experimental and numerical results of fixed shape sail. In case of a fixed shape sail, lift and drag coefficients are rarely changed at all velocity conditions. However, those of the flexible sail are decreased as the incoming velocity is increased. These are understandably resulted from shape variations due to the flexible material. Therefore aero-elastic similarity should be more carefully considered in the model test rather than other similarities.

Reynolds number effects on twin box girder long span bridge aerodynamics

  • This paper investigates the effects of Reynolds number (Re) on the aerodynamic characteristics of a twin-deck bridge. A 1:36 scale sectional model of a twin girder bridge was tested using the Wall of Wind (WOW) open jet wind tunnel facility at Florida International University (FIU). Static tests were performed on the model, instrumented with pressure taps and load cells, at high wind speeds with Re ranging from $1.3{\times}10^6$ to $6.1{\times}10^6$ based on the section width. Results show that the section was almost insensitive to Re when pitched to negative angles of attack. However, mean and fluctuating pressure distributions changed noticeably for zero and positive wind angles of attack while testing at different Re regimes. The pressure results suggested that with the Re increase, a larger separation bubble formed on the bottom surface of the upstream girder accompanied with a narrower wake region. As a result, drag coefficient decreased mildly and negative lift coefficient increased. Flow modification due to the Re increase also helped in distributing forces more equally between the two girders. The bare deck section was found to be prone to vortex shedding with limited dependence on the Re. Based on the observations, vortex mitigation devices attached to the bottom surface were effective in inhibiting vortex shedding, particularly at lower Re regime.

  • 초대형 컨테이너선을 대비하여 기존의 자동화 이송 시스템인 AGV는 자동화, 유지보수의 어려움 등으로 인해 많은 문제점이 있다. 이에 대한 방안으로, 새로운 이송 시스템인 LMTT(Linear Motor based Transfer Technology) 시스템을 제안하였다. 특히 LMTT는 자동화, 고속화가 용이할 뿐만 아니라 AGV에 비해서 친환경적이다. 따라서 이와 유사한 새로운 이송시스템에 대해서 많은 연구가 진행이 되고 있음에도 불구하고, LMTT 시스템은 거대한 서보 시스템으로서 특히 선형 모터(Linear Motor)는 차량의 무게에 의한 마찰력의 영향을 많이 받으며, 이러한 마찰력은 LMTT 시스템의 속응성의 저하 요인으로서 작용 하게된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는, 새로운 이송 시스템인 LMTT에 대하여 부상력을 고려함으로서 정지 마찰력을 감소시켜 시스템 속응성을 향상시킬 수 있는 연구를 수행하였다.

단분절 척추경 나사못의 피로수명과 Pre-Load의 영향 (The effect of pre-load and fatigue life for one-level pedicle screw system)

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effect of pre-load and fatigue life of the distracted one-level pedicle screw system. A spring, which acted as a substitute of the ligament, was installed in the one-level pedicle screw system before testing. The static and fatigue properties are now being tested, which includes 6mm rod to 6mm screw, 6mm rod to 6.5mm screw and 6.35mm rod to 6.5mm screw, under pre-load. Until now as test data were analyzed, 6mm rod to 6.5mm screw was found to have the best performances of stillness and fatigue lift, while 6mm rod to 6mm screw showed the shortest fatigue life. If the stiffness of screw was bigger than that of rod. the fatigue life was prolonged. The fatigue life of the distracted pedicle screw was proved to be shorter than that of the one-level pedicle screw system. So the fatigue life was shortened because of the effect of the spring on the flexibility and stiffness of the rod. In order to obtain the stability of the pedicle screw, more tests are under doing on this topic.
