  • Purpose of study: This study aims to explore 'labyrinth walking,' a lesser-known Christian spiritual practice within the Korean church. Additionally, it intends to propose ways for implementing labyrinth walking through literature reviews encompassing theory and practice. Research content and method: The article begins with its exploration by defining labyrinth walking from a historical perspective. It was a spiritual practice that existed in the Middle Ages, involving the traversal of a labyrinthine shape, typically a single path on the floor, often accompanied by prayer or contemplation. The contemporary spiritual practice of labyrinth walking was recovered and reinterpreted by Christian scholars and spiritual directors during the mid and late twentieth century. Additionally, within Christianity, labyrinth walking, rich with symbolism representing Jesus' suffering and salvation, baptism, pilgrimage, and purification, comprises five essential steps: preparing, walking with prayer or contemplation, remaining in the center, returning, and journaling and sharing. By merging pilgrimage, walking, prayer, and meditation, the practice of walking the labyrinth can enable people to have an opportunity for retreat, to encounter and be accompanied by God, to experience moments of serenity and healing, to reflect on themselves, to create life-transforming resolutions, and to build a sense of community. As a result, many Korean churches should acknowledge the value of and utilize labyrinth walking to nurture faith and spirituality. Conclusions and Suggestions: Accordingly, this paper suggests some practical ways to employ labyrinth walking as a form of prayer, part of a ritual or religious activity, an embodiment of pilgrimage, and a tranquil and nonverbal experience. Furthermore, the study recommends that Korean churches establish proper goals, consider essential principles for labyrinth design and installation, and follow specific guidelines while conducting labyrinth walks.

  • Contemporary society faces increasingly diverse risks with expanding impacts. In response, the importance of science education has become more prominent. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of existing research on science-related risk education and derives implications for such education. Using detailed bibliometric analysis, we collected citation data from 83 international scholarly journals (SSCI) in the field of education indexed in the Web of Science with the keywords 'Scientific Risk.' Subsequently, using the bibliometrix package in R-Studio, we conducted a bibliometric analysis. The findings are as follows. Firstly, research on risk education covers topics such as risk literacy, the structure of risks addressed in science education, and the application and effectiveness of incorporating risk cases into educational practices. Secondly, a significant portion of research on risks related to science education has been conducted within the framework of socioscientific issues (SSI) education. Thirdly, it was observed that research on risks related to science education primarily focuses on the transmission of scientific knowledge, with many studies examining formal education settings such as curricula and school learning environments. These findings imply several key points. Firstly, to effectively address risks in contemporary society, the scope of risk education should extend beyond topics such as nuclear energy and climate change to encompass broader issues like environmental pollution, AI, and various aspects of daily life. Secondly, there is a need to reexamine and further research topics explored in the context of SSI education within the framework of risk education. Thirdly, it is necessary to analyze not only risk perception but also risk assessment and risk management. Lastly, there is a need for research on implementing risk education practices in informal educational settings, such as science museums and media.

  • With March 1st, 1947 being a starting point, the Jeju 4·3 occurred on April 3rd, 1948, the same period during which the cold war system was going between the United States of America and the Soviet Union, following the Second World War. At that time, from 20,000 to as many as 30,000 local residents became victims of the power exercised mostly by the central government. Despite the great number of casualties, however, there has been little qualitative research covering the trauma of 4·3 survivors so far. In addition, as the number of survivors is declining with age, there is an urgent need of more studies on their psychological trauma. As such, this study analyzed the data obtained from the field research notes of in-depth interviews with 16 4·3 survivors, adopting thematic analysis. The findings of the research reveal that the survivors have been experiencing frequent flashbacks and invasions in their daily life. Not only does the aftereffect of witnessing the massacre still have an impact on their lives, but they also re-experience it in their dreams. Moreover, rooted deeply in the minds of the survivors is the sense of regret for the victims who were killed without ever getting a chance to enjoy the material affluence of the present day. Even so, the survivors have been struggling to cope with psychological distress on their own, rather than share it with others. This study aims to vividly convey the trauma suffered by Jeju 4·3 survivors through their voices, and further, to provide basic data in order to understand and sympathize the psychological wounds of 4·3 survivors.

  • Background: Sleep disorders in menopausal women can act as a factor that lowers the quality of life. This study aims to understand the effects of mental health, such as depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and stress, on sleep duration in menopausal women to contribute to the management of their mental health. Methods: Using data from the 2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we conducted a study on 549 naturally menopausal women aged 50-64 years. We applied frequency and weighted percentages, Rao-Scott chi-square tests, and logistic regression. Results: It was found that women with a university degree or higher had appropriate sleep duration (odds ratio [OR], 0.33; p=0.004). Women with mild depression were less likely to have appropriate sleep compared to those without depression (OR, 2.13; p=0.025). Additionally, women who experienced high levels of stress were less likely to have appropriate sleep compared to those with minimal stress (OR, 2.73; p=0.041). Conclusion: Depression and stress are related to sleep duration, and these mental health issues can lead to physiological problems due to their complex experiences. Therefore, individual attention and management of mental health are crucial, and it seems necessary to develop community-based treatment and prevention strategies.

  • A safe residential environment enhances the quality of human life and promotes community development through self-actualization. It significantly affects regional stability by influencing the physical and psychological environment necessary to satisfy basic needs, providing a sense of security and alleviating anxiety. Safety is a major housing need; however, current housing policies tend to focus predominantly on housing supply. This emphasis limits the fulfillment of higher-level needs due to poor housing conditions and housing cost burdens faced by young households. Therefore, this study aims to identify areas affected by the stigma effect by analyzing the discrepancy between perceived crime risk and actual crime occurrence among single-person young households. The study compares these stigmatized areas with regions where the perceived crime risk is lower than the actual crime occurrence to identify differences in housing needs satisfaction and to prioritize policy interventions. Additionally, the study examines differences in housing needs satisfaction and importance based on gender to inform policy priorities. By considering the stigma effect on regional housing needs and gender-specific deficiencies, this study provides significant policy implications.

  • In this paper, I will keep the balance of virtues between the moral and the intellectual by understanding the dicourse of Early Confucianism through the frame of virtue epistemology. Not only is this an attempt to be free of a conventional way of thinking about virtues in the light of moral perspective, but also a holistic approach to grasp the activities of human life to unite cognition with action. This approach is influenced by contemporary movements of western philosophy paying a special attention to the concept of virtues within some parts of ethics and epistemology. Hence, we need roughly to interrogate the context of recalling the virtues. In this vein, I will examine the Analects in relation to intellectual virtues. I will show inseparability of intellectual virtues from moral virtues and unity between knowledge and action from the complementarity between virtues. In virtue epistemology, the understanding of intellectual virtues is one of the solutions to unravel the issues of epistemic justification. In short, this is similar with the Early Confucian way of thinking about the unity between knowledge and action. Even though the initial question they raised respectively is different, the unity of knowledge with action through virtues aims to make humans better ones as the theme of philosophical anthropology.

  • A super-aged society is expected in 2025, as the elderly population, aged 65 or older, living in the Seoul metropolitan area will account for approximately 44.10%. The proportion of the elderly is expected to continue to increase up to 48.7% by 2050. Hence, there is an urgent need to establish housing policies for elderly households. This study aims to examine the effect of the length of residence of elderly households in the metropolitan area on their choice of residential mobility, identify the characteristics of elderly households, and provide policy implications. According to the analysis results of this study, elderly households in the metropolitan area have less intention to move as the length of their residence in the current location increases. Even if they intend to move, they decide to move within the current region. In particular, owner-occupiers' intention to move decreases further as the length of their residence increases, indicating that residential stability has a significant impact on the quality of life for elderly households. These results, in line with previous studies, and this study suggest that the residential mobility of elderly households is closely related to the length of residence and satisfaction with the residential environment, and should be taken into consideration when establishing future policies related to housing for elderly households.

  • In parallel with advancement of the industrial society and accompanied quality-of-life improvement, jewelry is now rather viewed as one of common accessories used in daily life, than as a luxurious item as treated before change of perception about it in the past, attracting thus gradually multiplying demand for it. Thanks to rapid spread of multi media like the Internet, an increasing number of people have come to develop great liking for exceptional design and unique format of jewelry products. Following drain of their reserves, natural gems are unlikely to meet the demand for them fully in the future. As a consequence, it seems essential to rely on synthetic, artificial, imitation jewelry or organic substances and quasi-mineral in amorphous structure for substitute jewelry. Since synthetic jewelry has such a great potential as substitute jewelry, it is expected to maximize added value to jewelry if and when accompanied with development of creative design and upgrading of processing technology for jewelry, in addition to various types of synthetic jewelry and glass that have been already put in use as substitute substances. Synthetic jewelry is thus believed to be able to greatly contribute to progress of the jewelry industry. In many countries of the world, jewelry and gem industry has been regarded as one of promising sectors vital in enriching the national wealth. In this context, the Korean Ministry of Finance and Economy announced in July 2007 "an activating policy for the jewelry and gem industry, declaring to cultivate and grow it to be new engine for the nation's growth". The present paper thus aims to conduct a study exclusively on cutting design of synthetic jewelry as a part of measures to activate the jewelry industry in Korea. Efforts are made to develop designs for jewelry that are unique and different from the conventional stereotyped form of polishing and are added with color, pattern and fashionable cutting. Priority is given in this regard to designing jewelry that may attract general public and may be shared by public beyond the limit of conventional design for jewelry and producing products that stand in contrast with other products. By upgrading the quality of jewelry design, competitiveness of the jewelry industry may be ensured and the creative area of jewelry design may be expanded by far.

  • Korea is preparing an offshore carbon capture, transport and storage (CCS) demonstration project which is recognized as one of important $CO_2$ reduction technologies to mitigate climate change. The offshore CCS project aims to transport, inject and store large amount of $CO_2$ into offshore geologic formation, and has a potential risk of leakage which might cause disastrous damage to human health, environment and property. Therefore, in order to ensure the safety of the offshore CCS project, a strict HSE (health, safety and environment) management plan and its implementation are required throughout the project life cycle. However, there are no HSE domestic laws or regulations applicable to CCS projects, and the related research is insufficient in Korea. For the derivation of the essential and urgent requirement in HSE management framework applicable to the offshore CCS project in Korea, we analysed the HSE management methodologies and foreign CCS HSE management guidelines and cases. First, this paper has analyzed ISO 31000, a generalized risk management principles. Second, we have investigated the HSE management practices of CCS projects in Norway and UK. Based on the analyses, we suggested the necessity of developing the HSE Philosophy and the HSE management process through the whole life cycle. Application of HSE management in early phase of an offshore CCS project will promote systematic and successful project implementation in a cost-effective and safe way.
