  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the functions and characteristics of search interfaces of Korean Old and Rare Collection Information System(KORCIS) and Korean History Online. The checklist of OPAC functionalities proposed by Breeding was used to examine eleven functions of these systems. Both system provide the following functions: Search by keywords; Boolean operators in queries; Order results chronologically; Modify search without re-keying the initial terms ; Search within result sets ; and Ability to limit results to an individual library or education. They do not provide such functions as Browse by author, title, subject and View and recall the search history for the current session. Adoption of standard OPAC and next-generation catalog functionalities, in-depth understanding of user needs and information seeking behaviors, and the improvement of subject access to these systems are suggested in this study.

  • This paper reports the GEM (Gateway to Educational Materials) project whose goal is to develop an operational framework to provide the K-12 teachers in the world with 'one-stop/any-stop' access to thousands of lesson plans, curriculum units and other Internet-based educational resources. To the IS-element Dublin Core base package, the GEM project added an 8-element, domain-specific GEM package. The GEM project employed the conceptual data modeling approach to designing the GEM database, used the Sybase relational database management system (RDBMS) to construct the backend database for storing the metadata of educational resources, and also employed the active server page (ASP) technology to provide Web interfaces to that database. The consortium members catalog lesson plans and other Internet-based educational resources using a cataloging module program that produces HTML meta tags. A harvest program collects these meta tags across the Internet and outputs an ASCII file that conforms to the standard agreed by the consortium members. A parser program processes this file to enter meta tags automatically into appropriate relational tables in the Sybase database. The conceptual/logical schemas of Dublin Core and GEM profile are presented. The advantages of conceptual modeling approach to manage metadata are discussed. A prototype system that provides access to the GEM metadata is available at http://lis.skku.ac.kr/gem/.

  • Disagreements between the technical environment and the conventional library catalog have caused a re-clarification of International Cataloguing Principles (ICP). Review is under way to finalize the publication of RDA (Resource Description and Access) in late 2009 by the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA. The impending RDA is based on FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) which re-explains the bibliographic universe focused on entities, attributes and relationships between resources, but tries to maintain MARC as an encoding format for RDA. In this study, firstly FRBR, ICP and RDA were analyzed. Secondly, we propose 3 scenarios of RDA implementation: the future cataloging system based on the FRBR Entity, using a semantic web structure, and the scenario using the existing MARC format with some small changes. Finally, by examining response patterns of overseas bibliographic institutions, we present a set of urgent issues for future directions of bibliographic contro in Korea which includes, but not limited to, relationship between RDA/FRBR and KCR (Korean Cataloging Rules), continuation of KORMARC and authority control.

  • In the library catalog, the scalability of information acquisition can be guaranteed by expressing various relationships existing between resources. Such a bibliographical relationship can be realized through the authority record. Therefore, the revision of 「KORMARC Format for Authority Data」, the national standard for authority records, is inevitably important. Therefore, for the revision of 「KORMARC Format for Authority Data」, (1) the latest international cataloging trends were analyzed, (2) the opinions of librarians were collected, (3) internal guidelines used for authority work were analyzed, and (4) latest version of MARC21 were analyzed. In addition, for the continuous revision of 「KORMARC Format for Authority Data」, the revision procedure of MARC21 was investigated to draw implications for the KORMARC revision method. Data was collected and utilized through literature reviews, MARC21 analysis, interviews with professors and librarians.

  • Korean medical libraries have made interlibrary loan active under the korean medical library association since 1969, the sharing acquisition of journals has not been peformed efficiently in the absence of a bibliographic control institute. The medical library of seoul national medical university which is designated to a medical professional information center by korea education academy information developed MEDLIS linking the union catalog and interlibrary loan system and has been operating it in cooperation with the korean medical library association. Two types of questionaries were sent to 350 medical researchers and 160 medical librarians to investigate the realities of domestic and foreign medical information institutes, develop sharing systems and find a solution for sharing systems. Also, some analyses for the recent state of duplicate subscriptions, interlibrary loan, demands for system operations un the basis of the statistics of MEDLIS users were made. The result showed that medical researchers and medical librarians are affirmative for MEDLIS, users need a convenient interlibrary loan system and medical librarians agree to activate interlibrary loan. It also showed that sharing acquisition of journals seemed to be realizable for medical librarians, although there was no intention to improve the centralization of interlibrary loan among them. From the findings, a plan for sharing acquisition of journals established by the sharing acquisition committee under korea medical libraries society and national 8 local centers to play a key role in it was made. Also, a proposal for the establishment of an information center for controlling korean medical bibliographies was suggested. This system will be expected to contribute to make users to acquire materials more effectively and save the national budget.

  • This paper gives a summary and overview of a survey conducted at the catalogues of five universities in Daegu during November 1982. The major objective of this study was to secure information about user needs in order to improve the catalogue in Korean university libraries. Data was collected by a combined method of questionnaire and interview. A total of 379 respondents were taken on a randomly selected sample of catalogue users. Results of the survey can be summarized as follows: 1. Eighty-eight percent of the students answered that they had used the library more than twice a month. Nevertheless the number of students consulting the catalogue with the same frequency was only 220, or a n.0, pproximately 58 percent. Those who used the library most tended to use the catalogue more than those who rarely came to the library. 2. Those who had been shown how to use their own catalogue were only 32.5percent of which the students found the instruction sufficient for them to be able to use the catalogue were only 37.5 percent. In particular, they stated that instructions by printed materials and/or library orientation were so poor that they didn't give much help in using the catalogue. This problem makes many libraries to review their own method of instruction in order to encourage patrons to use the catalogue more effectively. 3. Most of the students consulted the catalogue in order to locate library materials. Known-item searches and subject searches were 84 and 16 percent respectively. While 70.5 percent of the students used the author-title catalogue without any difficulties, only 35.5 percent of those stated that using the classed catalogue was easy. 4. It was surprising that the number of students using title access in the search was far greater than that of students using author access. In contrast with this, other studies conducted by many earlier overseas investigators revealed that the great majority of patrons tended to use the latter first. Therefore, we should put more emphasis on the title entries in the catalogue itself as well as cataloging rules. 5. Most useful bibliographic elements in the entry were author, title, call number, date and publisher whereas edition, series statement and the location of publisher were rarely used compared with the other elements. Content note was the most desirable element in the entry to be involved, for many catalogers were used not to describe it on the note area. 6. The chief reason given for not using the catalogue was "I can manage without it" with "It's difficult to understand contents of the card entry." The other one was "It's useless to search materials by the catalogue because I've failed so many times to obtain them out of the stock." In response to this, circulation and acquisition system should be improved not to make such complaints any more.

  • This study aims to identify the recent trends and intellectual structure of international research in the field of catalog, which is undergoing a major change due to the enactment of new standards and rules and the anticipated future. For this purpose, we collected 680 articles published in the 14 years since 2010 and analyzed 1,942 author keywords extracted from them after preprocessing. The main findings of the analysis are as follows First, overseas cataloging research has seen notable growth since 2017. Second, the most frequent research topics were: cataloging, metadata, RDA, university libraries, authority control, linked data, FRBR, catalog, LCSH, libraries, andonline cataloging. Third, the research themes were divided into two clusters, one related to the traditional aspects of library cataloging and the other related to the more recently discussed topics of authority control, cooperative cataloging, RDA, and linked data, which were further subdivided into 14 subclusters. Fourth, we looked at the growth index and standard performance index of the 14 keyword clusters and found that all but one cluster showed growth in terms of discipline growth. This study is significant in that it can be used as a basis for predicting the future development of inventories for Korean academia and the field and for related education.

  • This study reviews the development and change of main entry principle in German cataloging codes, with special emphasis on RAK. With rerard to the functions of catalog, comparison between the traditional title main entry in the Orient and author main entry in the West has been made. The analysis confirms in this study that various criteria in choice of the entries in RAK have been adopted. In case of works where the persons who have played different roles in the works are named on the title page, as well as related works and works of mixed responsibility, the criteria of entry determination are complex and time consuming process and have no absolute value. And there are also various kinds of problems in corporate entries including confirmation of originator(Urheber), choice of either the territorial authority corncerned or corporate bodies as an entry depending on the nature of the publications, and a unique bibliographical situation of treaties. This means the code is absence of absolute value in selecting entries, and this results in adoption of main entry principle which has lost its significance for the purpose of cataloging. With emergence of the ISBD and actualization of automated cataloging, morever, all entries are equal as points of access. It would eliminate the need for personal judgements required in choice of main entry by the present code. In doing so, it would bring uniformity and standardization to cataloging practice. In direct approach to works, title entry is more developed finding device than author entry in cataloging theories. Thus introduction of unit card system beginning with title which is adopted in KCR3 would be desirable, the complicated rules for the choice of entry could be abandoned from cataloging codes. Most of the user studies show that catalog users have placed higher value on the title entry as a finding device and each entry is equal as access points through unit entry. This means that choice of a given entry as a main entry is unnecessary in cataloging codes. Title entry would be a rather simple standard and direct approach for works. This study proves that the traditional title entry of Korea is superior to author main entry in the Western world in cataloging theory. Thus recommendation to be made is that abandonment of author main entry from cataloging codes should be considered in the future.

  • Since the recent financial crisis in universities has caused the decrease of academic library budget, the resource sharing has been considered by utilizing inter-library loan (ILL) data for solving the financial deficit. This study aims to identify the collection profiles of western monographs' ILL data among 4-year academic libraries. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, this study analyzes ILL data from 2011 to 2017 using the bibliographic data and ILL transactions of the KERIS union catalog. The findings of the study show that the western monographs was significantly provided by large-scale academic libraries in 2011, however, the extent of major regions expanded, and the number of influential institutions rose in 2016. Second, in 2012, the influence in the ILL network increased in the quantity of western monographs holdings and the proportion of common collections. On the other hand, in 2016, it was also shown that the influence in terms of provision in the ILL network increased in the proportion of unique collections. Lastly, the ILL participating academic libraries were classified into six clusters by a hierarchical clustering analysis of holdings and ILL indexes.

  • This paper is to explore considerations in authority control to accommodate LRM nomen entities through the literature reviews, the analysis of RDA rules, and the opinion survey of domestic catalog experts. As a result, for authority control, considerations were proposed in the aspect of nomen's attribute elements, catalog description, and MARC authority format. First, it is necessary to describe in as much detail as possible the category, the scheme, intended audience, the context of use, the reference source, the language, the script, the script conversion as the attributes of the nomen with the status of identification, note, and indifferentiated name indicators added in RDA. Second, the description method of attribute elements and relational elements of nomen can be unstructured, structured, identifier, and IRI as suggested in RDA, and vocabulary encoding scheme (VES) and string encoding scheme (SES) should be written for structured description, Also, cataloging rules for structuring authorized access points and preferred names/title should be established. Third, an additional expansion plan based on Maxwell's expansion (draft) was proposed in order to prepare the MARC 21 authority format to reflect the LRM nomen. (1) The attribute must be described in 4XX and 5XX so that the attribute can be entered for each nomen, and the attributes of the nomen to be described in 1XX, 5XX and 4XX are presented separately. (2) In order to describe the nomen category, language, script, script conversion, context of use, and date of usage as a nomen attribute, field and subfield in MARC 21 must be added. Accordingly, it was proposed to expand the subfield of 368, 381, and 377, and to add fields to describe the context of use and date of usage. The considerations in authority control for the LRM nomen proposed in this paper will be the basis for establishing an authority control plan that reflects LRM in Korea.
