Impact of litter on femur and tibial morphology, bone biomechanics, and leg health parameters in broiler chickens

  • Objective: In this study effects of three types of beddings on broiler leg health and bone biomechanics were evaluated. Methods: A total of 504 male chicks (Ross 308) were randomly placed on three beddings (4 replicates/group; 42 birds/pen), zeolite-added litter (ZL), plastic-grid flooring (PF), and wood shavings (WS). On day 42, chickens were weighed, slaughtered, and samples (bone, muscle, and drumstick) were collected. Bones were subjected to leg health tests, morphometric measurements, biomechanical testing, and ash analysis. Results: Broilers in PF and WS groups showed higher live weight than the ZL group (p<0.001), and the incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) and varus valgus deformity due to distal bending was significantly higher in PF (p<0.001). Multinomial logistic regression showed that bedding has a significant (p = 0.038) contribution toward the development of TD. Tibial strength (p = 0.040), drumstick width (p = 0.001), and total femur and epiphyseal ash contents (p = 0.044, 0.016) were higher in the ZL group. Chicken live weight was correlated with tibial length and weight (r = 0.762, 0.725). Conclusion: Flooring and the type of bedding material directly affect broiler bone length, strength and leg health. Plastic bedding improves the slaughter weight of chickens on the expense of leg deformities, and zeolite litter improves leg health and bone strength.

Comparison of Biomechanical Stability of Custom-made Hip Implants using Finite Element Analysis (스템 길이에 따른 환자맞춤 인공고관절의 역학적 안정성 비교)

  • Designing a morphologically well-fitted hip implant to a patient anatomy is desirable to improve surgical outcomes since a commercial ready-made hip implant may not well conform to the patient joint. In this study, biomechanical stability of patient-specific hip implants with two different stem lengths was compared and discussed using a 3D finite element analysis (FEA). The FEA results in this study showed that an increase in stem length brings about more the peaked von-Mises stress (PVMS) in the prosthesis and less in the femur. However the decrease in von-Mises stress in the femur causes stress shielding phenomenon that usually leads to considerable bone resorption. Although, in biomechanical stability point of view, this work recommends the use of smaller stems, the length of stem must be determined by considering both the von-Mises stress and the stress-shielding phenomenon.

The Effects of Dietary Lipids and Ovariectomy on Bone Mass in Rats (식이지방과 종류와 난소절제가 흰쥐가 골질량에 미치는 양향)

  • This study examined the effect of dietary lipids and ovariectomy(OVX) on bone mass in rats. The experimental animals were divided into sham operation(S) or OVX(O) groups and then each group was divided into soybean oil(SS, OS), beef tallow(SB, OB), and fish oil(SF, OF) diet group. Experimental diets were fed for 16 weeks. Weight gain tended to be higher in OVX groups than in sham groups. Weigth gain was the highest in beef tallow group (SB) and the lowest in fish oil group(SF). There were no difference in weight, length, breaking force, strength and circumference of femur mong groups. However, volume of femur tended to be higher in OVX groups than in sham groups. Ash content of femur was significantly lower in OVX than sham groups but there were no difference between SB and OB group. Ca content in the soybean oil and beef tallow group were not influenced by OVX but Ca content in fish oil group was significantly higher in OF than SF group. The SB group showed the hyighest Ca content and the SF group showed the lowest Ca content. P content of femur was significantly lower in OVX groups than in sham groups but there were no difference between SB and OB group. The SS group showed the highest P content and the OS and OF group showed lower P content compare to other groups. From this result, it suggested that beef tallow positively influenced maintenance of bone mass by means of accumulation of body fat in ovariectomy.

Effect of Ovariectomy and Dietary Calcium Levels on Bone Metabolism in Rats Fed Low Calcium Diet during Growing Period (성장기 동안 저칼슘식이를 섭취한 흰쥐에서 난소절제 및 칼슘 섭취량이 골격대사에 미치는영향)

  • This study explored the effect of calcium levels and/or ovariectomy on bone metabolism using female Sprague-Dawley weanling rats as a model . Rats received a low (0.1%) calcium diet for 8 weeks. The rats were then divided into three subgroups that were fed 0.1% ,0.5% and 1.5% calcium diets for 8 weeks after operation. The results of this experiment indicate that body weight gin was higher in ovariectomy groups than in sham groups regardless of calcium level and food intake. Serum Ca and P concentrations were of normal level regardless of calcium level and ovariectomy. Estrogen concentration was low in the ovariectomized group. Serum alkaline phophatase activity and urinary hydroxyproline have been used as markers of bone formation and resorption. These values were increased in ovariectomized groups. The weight, length and breaking force of femur were not significantly different between the groups. Ash, Ca, P and total lipid contents in femur and lumbar were decreased in the groups fed low calcium . Mg content was decreased in the ovariectomy and total protein content was not affected by calcium level and ovariectomy. The effect groups of ovarectomy on calcium contents of bone was more prominent in lumbar than in femur. In conclusion, though low calcium intakes during growth period may retard the attainment of peak bone mass, calcium supplementation after this period increased bone growth and mineral contents, but not significant effect in three calcium levels. Furthermore, calcium intake was shown to have a greater influence on the mineral contents of femur than of lumbar, and removal of endogenous estrogen production by ovariectomy was shown to be more deleterious on the ash and calcium contents of the lumbar than of femur.

Effect of Ovariectomy and Calcium Intake on Femur and Lumbar Compositions and Bone Related Factors in Adult Rats (성숙한 쥐의 대퇴골과 요추의 조성과 골격관련 인자에 대한 난소절제와 칼슘섭취 효과)

  • This study explored the effect of calcium levels and/or ovariectomy on bone composition and its related factors using the female Sprague-Dawley rats which achieved peak bone mass in normal(0.5%) calcium intake during growth period. The rats were randomly divided into six groups and fed 0.1%, 0.5% and 1.5% calcium diets for 8 weeks after ovariectomized and sham operation. The results indicated that body weight gain was higher in ovariectomized groups than sham groups, regardless of dietary calcium levels and food intakes. Serum Ca and P concentrations were normal level regardless of dietary calcium levels and operation. Estrogen concentration was decreased in ovariectomized rat groups. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity and urinary hydroxyproline were increased in ovariectomized groups. When rats were fed normal Ca diet during growing period, weight, length and breaking force of femur were not significantly different in all groups but increased the same level. Generally, lipid contents in lumbar and femur were lower in low calcium groups and this effect was more pronounced in femur. In case of femur, the significant decrease in Ca contents of bone was observed in a relatively short period of feeding low Ca diet, even though it appeared th desirable peak bone mass had achieved through the growing period by supplementing the adequate amount of calcium. The marked decrease of estrogen levels after ovariectomy did not seem to influence greatly bone parameters measured except bone wet weight. Therefore, this study indicated that lower intake of Ca might be more important determinating factor against osteoporosis than postmenopausal state stimulated by ovariectomy in female rats. With normal or high intake of Ca it appears possible to prevent bone loss in postmenopausal period, and this might apply only in case of achieving peak bone mass in the growing with the adequate intake of calcium.   • The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is liable to a major injury that often results in a functional impairment requiring surgical reconstruction. The success of reconstruction depends on such factors as attachment positions, initial tension of ligament and surgical methods of fixation. The purpose of this study is to find isometric positions of the substitute during flexion/extension. The distance between selected attachments on the femur and tibia was computed from a set of measurements using a 6 degree-of-freedom magnetic sensor system. A three-dimensional knee model was constructed from CT images and was used to simulate length change during knee flexion/extension. This model was scaled for each subject. Twenty seven points on the tibia model and forty two points on the femur model were selected to calculate length change. This study determined the maximum and minimum distances to the tibial attachment during flexion/extension. The results showed that minimum length changes were $1.9{\sim}5.8mm$ (average $3.6{\pm}1.4mm$). The most isometric region was both the posterosuperior and anterior-diagonal areas from the over-the-top. The proposed method can be utilized and applied to an optimal reconstruction of ACL deficient knees.

Vascularized Fibular Graft in the Treatment of Intractable Infected Nonunion of Femur - 3 Cases - (생비골 이식술을 통한 대퇴골의 난치성 감염성 불유합의 치료 - 3예 보고 -)

  • Purpose: To report the clinical results of the vascularized fibular graft in the treatment of intractable infected nonunion of femur. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 3 patients who were performed vascularized fibular graft in treated for intractable infected nonunion of femur. They had received an average of 5.6 times($4{\sim}8\;times$) surgical treatment at different hospitals. 1 case was of a infected nonunion in a fracture treated with internal fixation, the fracture having occurred after resection of a malignant tumor and transplantation of pasteurized autologous bone. 2 cases occurred after internal fixation in closed fractures. Surgical treatment was performed an average of 4 times($3{\sim}5\;times$) at our hospital and in all of the cases debridement of necrotic tissue and sequestrectomy. And vascularized fibular graft was performed. In all cases unilateral external fixation devices were used, of these, 1 case was changed into internal fixation. The final conclusion was made by assessment of functional outcomes and complications according to the standards of Paley. Results: As a result, in all of the cases bone union was achieved, and in the last follow up the functional results were excellent in 2 cases and good in 1 case. There were not presented leg length discrepancy of more than 2 cm, and further loss of knee joint motion. After previous treatment, average 23.3 months($16{\sim}30\;months$) was taken to eliminate infection and achieve complete bone union via vascularized fibular graft in our hospital. Conclusion: In treatment of intractable infected nonunion of femur, fairly good results can be expected after firm fixation, through debridement and vascularized fibular graft.

Effects of Safflower Seed Yoghurt on the Osteoporosis in Ovariectomized Rat (홍화씨 Youghurt 급여가 난소절제 Rat의 골다공증에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of satllower(Carthamus tinctorius L.) seed yoghurt on osteoporosis. Sham-operated rats(control) were fed basal diet for 6 weeks. Ovariectomized rats were divided into 6 different experimental groups including basal diet group(G I), yoghurt diet group(G II) and 1% to 4% safflower seed yoghurt diet group(GIII to GVI). and fed with the experimental diet for 6 weeks, respectively. The feed intake, feed efficiency ratio and body weight gains of rats fed with the experimental diet for 6 weeks were analyzed, respectively, and the weight. length, strength, mineral content and density in left femur of the animals were determined, respectively. Also, the right femur tissues were observed by Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). The level of feed intake was not different among all experimental groups. The feed efficiency ratio and body weight gain were high in safflower seed yoghurt groups, and GV and GVI appeared high specially. Density, strength, ash content and minerals content in left femur were similar between control and G I, and increased with increasing the amount of satllower seed in yoghurt. On the other hand, weight and length in left femur showed no difference among all experimental groups. From the results of SEM observation of right femur tissue, GVI showed high healing effects. From the results of this experiment the healing effects of satllower seed yoghurt diet group were higher than those of control and G I. Among the treatments, GVI showed the highest healing effects on the osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats.

The Effect of InsamGobonHwan (IGH) on Growth of Rats (인삼고본환가미방(人蔘固本丸加味方)이 흰쥐의 성장(成長)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Objectives To evaluate the effect of InsamGobonHwan (IGH) on growth of rats. Methods We divided male Sprague-Dawley rats into 4 groups(IGHE1, IGHE2, IGHE3 and sham group). IGHE1, IGHE2, IGHE3 groups were administered with IGHE water extracts once a day at the dose of 1,000, 500 and 250mg/kg/$10m{ell}$ for 1 week, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks. Sham group was administered with normal saline with using the same method. We measured body weight, amount of body weight increasing, length of femur, serum Growth Hormone(GH), serum Insulin-like Growth Factor-I(IGF-I), serum Thyroid-stimulating Hormone(TSH) and serum testosterone at 1 week, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks of experiment. Results The body weight and the changes of body weight increased significantly in IGHE1 group compared to sham group after 2 and 3 weeks, and in IGHE2 group after 2 weeks. The lengths of the femur increased significantly in IGHE1 group as compared with sham group after 1, 2 and 3 weeks, and in IGHE3 group after 1 week. The level of IGF-I in the serum increased significantly in S1 group as compared tosham group after 1 and 3 weeks, and in IGHE13 group after 3 weeks. The level of TSH in the serum increased significantly in IGHE1group as compared to sham group after 2 and 3 weeks. The level of GH and testosterone in the serum does not change significantly. Conclusions SGT have an effect of promoting growth of rats and might be effect to treat various kinds of growth delay in children.

Effect of force during stumbling of the femur fracture with a different ce-mented total hip prosthesis

  • Total hip prosthesis is used for the patients who have hip fracture and are unable to recover naturally. To de-sign highly durable prostheses one has to take into account the natural processes occurring in the bone. Finite element analysis is a computer based numerical analysis method which can be used to calculate the response of a model to a set of well-defined boundary conditions. In this paper, the static load analysis is based, by se-lecting the peak load during the stumbling activity. Two different implant materials have been selected to study appropriate material. The results showed the difference of maximum von Misses stress and detected the frac-ture of the femur shaft for different model (Charnley and Osteal) implant with the extended finite element method (XFEM), and after the results of the numerical simulation of XFEM for different was used in deter-mining the stress intensity factors (SIF) to identify the crack behavior implant materials for different crack length. It has been shown that the maximum stress intensity factors were observed in the model of Charnley.
