  • Two naturalized plants of Lespedeza from Korea are reported. L. lichiyuniae T. Nemoto, H. Ohashi & T. Itoh is similar to L. cuneata (Dum. Cours.) G. Don. and L. juncea (L. .f.) Pers. in morphology, but the species differs from them by pink or purple flowers and the under surface of leaflets and cleistogamous pods with densely hairs. L. davidii Franchet is distinguished by distinctly large leaflets from the other Korean Lespedeza and by plants covered with densely tomentose hairs from the Korean species of subgenus Macrolespedeza. In Korea two plants are found on the parks or roads prepared recently.

  • The antioxidant activity of Desmodium oldhami (Leguminosae) was determined by measuring the radical scavenging effect on DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl). The methanolic extract of D. oldhami showed the strong antioxidant activity. Five compounds, kaempferol-3-O-rhamnopyranoside (afzeline) (1), quercetin-3-O-[$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranosyl($1{\rightarrow}6$)-$\beta$-Dglucopyranoside] (rutin) (2), kaempferol-3-O-glucopyranoside (astragalin) (3), genistein-7-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside (genistin) (4), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (5) were isolated from the active ethyl acetate soluble fraction of D. oldhami through repeated silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Among them, compound 2 showed the most significant antioxidative effect on DPPH free radical scavenging test. Compounds 1-5 are reported for the first time from this plant.

  • The present study was conducted during the period July 18-August 11, 1981, at the four industrial complexes(Pohang, Ulsan, Onsan, and Yeochon) using the naked eye method. The study included the survey of plant species growing within a 2km from the area of pollution source, selection of plants tolerant to air pollution and effects of pollution on their growth. The results obtained are as follows; 1) Vascular plants surveyed as to industrial complexes consist of 90 families, 6 subfamilies, 213 genera and 290 species. Major plant families and species for each area are as follows: 1) Pohang area: 54 families, 102 genera and 126 species Leguminosae(16) Graminae(11), Compositae(9) Rosaceae(9) 2) Ulsan area: 61 families, 131 genera, and 158 species Compositae(17) Gramineae(16) Leguminosae(15) Rosaceae(9) Polygonaceae(9) Solanaceae(6) 3) Onsan area: 46 families, 98 genera, and 158 species Compositae(12) Gramineae(12) Leguminosae(12) Rosaceae(6) Polygonaceae(6) 4) Yeochon: 71 families, 150 genera, and 188 species Rosaceae(15) Leguminosae(15) Compositae(14) Graminese(14) Polygonaceae(8) Salicaceae(6) 2. Table 1 shows tolerant plants to air pollution in this study. 3. The following plants may be recommended as planting species at the industrial complex area. Leguminosae: Amorpha fruticosa L. Lespedeza bicolor Turcz. Lespedeza maximowiczii Schneider Robinia pseudoacacia L. Sophora japonica L. Fagaceae: Quercus acutissima Carr. Quercus serrata Thunb. Quercus variabilis Bl. • From the roasted seeds of Cassia tora L., a new naphthopyrone glycoside was isolated and characterized as 10-[${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-$(1{\rightarrow}6)-O-{\beta}-D-$glucopyranosyl)oxy]-5-hydrox y-8-methoxy-2-methyl-4H-naphtho[1, 2-b]pyran-4-one(isorubrofusarin gentiobioside). Along with isorubrofusarin gentiobioside, alaternin and adenosine were isolated and identified.

  • Two compounds were isolated from the root of Astragalus membranaceus(Bunge). On the basis of spectroscopic data their structures were identified as stigmast-4-en-3-one and a mixture of 2'-angeloyloxy-1',2'-dihydroxanthyletin and 2'-senecioyloxy-1',2'-dihydroxanthyletin. They were first isolated from the genus of Astragalus.

  • Polyphenolic compounds including flavonoids are wide spread in the plant kingdom, and interested recently because epidemiological studies have suggested correlations between the consumption of polyphenol-rich plant foods and the prevention of chronic diseases. Soy is a main source of isoflavonoids which are high dietary intake for the oriental population. In this study, anti-inflammatory action of sophoricoside, an isoflavone glycoside isolated from immature fruits of Sophora japonica (Leguminosae family), has been demonstrated. (omitted)
