Motivation for learning is important for positive learning outcomes as well as for measured achievement levels. When students come to our classes, they bring with them learning histories in which we as individual teachers, most likely, did not have an input. Our students do not only bring with them different levels of prerequisite leanings but also different levels of affect for what they will be learning. If we leave their final learning at the mercy of these entry characteristics, a test given the first day before the course will have almost isomorphic results with their achievement levels on the last day. The ones who had 'it' on the first day will be the ones who in the future will also have 'it', not too different from what the present situation is all over the world. These circumstances will tend to be the case ad infinitum, unless of course, we want to change the situation. This research clearly shows that effective instructional methodologies coupled with cooperative peer interactions not only have an impact on achievement but also on positive attitudes toward one's learning.
Culture is a crucial concept that forms the thinking and behaviors of a group of people, and it influences interactions in learning. Thus, it is also essential to consider cultural sensitivity in online learning technologies and instructional design as education is a set of learning actions based on values and perceptions. MOOCs, the latest online learning platform, are global online learning platforms that provide global learners with free and various learning resources including courses from different world-class institutions. Despite globalization having brought learners closer to sharing similar learning resources, the actual experiences with the resource are expected to vary according to cultures, mainly because learning behavior is a set of outcomes based on cultural differences. Taking this into consideration, this study aims to examine MOOCs from a cultural perspective in order to facilitate global learners, especially Korean learners, to utilize MOOCs with user-friendly services and contents. To achieve this objective, the study first identified and developed an evaluation criteria to examine the cultural sensitivity of MOOCs and conducted case studies on courses from major MOOC providers including edX and Coursera. From the findings, design recommendations of contents and courses on MOOCs were suggested to provide Korean learners with optimal learning experiences.
The aim of the work that is presented in this paper is to develop the new prior educational materials which use the field trip and to present educational possibilities. The QR codes were used to develop the prior materials. The developed materials applied to elementary students who attended to filed trips in 2012. This was practically achieved by the use of smartphone which enhance the learning experience of a physical visit by providing personalized information with QR codes. The results demonstrate the technology supported physical field trips provides significantly improved learning outcomes, increases students curiosity. Furthermore the findings of the study demonstrate that the application of the specific emerging technologies could facilitate the development of advanced learning experiences in field trips, increasing at a significant level the learning outcomes and the motivation of the participating students.

The game industry has grown steadily and the online game has become one of the most attractive game segments for its remarkable growth. Customer management in the online game industry, however, has received little attention from the academic field. The purpose of this study is to analyze the drivers of customer defection in the online game setting and suggest not only theoretical but also managerial insights into increasing customer retention rates. Prior to empirical analysis, the authors hypothesized that 3 variables of interests (Learning, Playing, Achievement) would explain the customer defection according to preceeding researches. To demonstrate these hypotheses, the authors obtained data from one of the biggest game publishers in Korea, and the empirical analysis model was developed considering context of research settings. The results of analyses provide the following insights. First, the key behavioral variables of Learning, Playing, and Achievement play substantial roles in explaining the customer defection. Next, the effects of these variables vary between customer types: novice and experienced customers. The defection decisions by novice customers are predicted by all key behavioral variables and Playing serves as the most influential indicator of the defection decisions. However, experienced customers are influenced by Playing and Achievement, while Learning has no impact on the defection decisions. Finally, the authors investigated hypothetical customer retention strategies, using the empirical results. The market outcomes indicate that the customer retention strategies work well with novice customers and it is hard-to-impossible to prevent experienced customers from defection using their behavioral data. These findings together deliver several meaningful insights to management as follow. First, the management should support customers to get involved in Learning activities at the very first stage. Second, customer's Achievement and appropriate compensation for it would work as defection barriers. Last, to optimize the outcomes of firm's marketing investments, it is better to focus on retention of novice users not experienced ones.
Purpose: Most stomach surgeons have been educated sufficiently in conventional open distal gastrectomy (ODG) but insufficiently in laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG). We compared learning curves and clinical outcomes between ODG and LADG by a single surgeon who had sufficient education of ODG and insufficient education of LADG. Materials and Methods: ODG (90 patients, January through September, 2004) and LADG groups (90 patients, June 2006 to June 2007) were compared. The learning curve was assessed with the mean number of retrieved lymph nodes, operation time, and postoperative morbidity/mortality. Results: Mean operation time was 168.3 minutes for ODG and 183.6 minutes for LADG. The mean number of retrieved lymph nodes was 37.9. Up to about the 20th to 25th cases, the slope decrease in the learning curve for LADG was more apparent than for ODG, although they both reached plateaus after the 50th cases. The mean number of retrieved lymph nodes reached the overall mean after the 30th and 40th cases for ODG and LADG, respectively. For ODG, complications were evenly distributed throughout the subgroups, whereas for LADG, complications occurred in 10 (33.3%) of the first 30 cases. Conclusions: Compared with conventional ODG, LADG is feasible, in particular for a surgeon who has had much experience with conventional ODG, although LADG required more operative time, slightly more time to get adequately retrieved lymph nodes and more complications. However, there were more minor problems in the first 30 LADG than ODG cases. The unfavorable results for LADG can be overcome easily through an adequate training program for LADG.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of ongoing feedback from the professor in students' processes of learning and developing writing skills. Specifically, the researcher was concerned with how ongoing feedback affected students' attitudes towards writing because in EFL contexts, motivating students to write is a first step to engage them in a challenging journey of academic writing. 20 freshmen taking a writing course, "Paragraph & Essay Writing", at A university participated in this study and they were asked to complete the questionnaire at the end of the spring semester 2009. The results revealed that receiving ongoing feedback from the professor had a positive influence on affective domain, was helpful to develop learning strategies, and was valuable in learning outcomes. However, they also expressed negative opinions: feeling a burden, focusing on forms, and feeling confused. To reflect their opinions, the following four suggestions were made to create a more effective learning environment: promoting learner autonomy, facilitating individual writing conferences, giving balanced feedback in between form and content, and using judicious feedback through careful streaming.
Enhanced active learning through information technology is becoming important for business and education sector. This paper describes one case of the continuing works for educational services through information technologies on the two-way learning and communication experience for live classes. As we expected, we faced some critical challenges but we believe that this work could make a significant impact on teaching, learning and creativity for better education in the near future.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the effects of change commitment and learning orientation on the innovativeness of clinical nurse. Methods: The participants in this study were 268 nurses, working in hospitals in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces, and Daejeon City. Data were collected from June to August, 2012. A structured questionnaire was used for data collect and data was analyzed using the SPSS/WIN program. Results: The most significant predictors of innovativeness were education, normative commitment, continuance commitment and learning commitment. Continuance commitment negatively correlated with innovativeness. Conclusion: These findings suggest that nurses' commitment to change and learning commitment were strongly linked to innovativeness. Management-level workers in these hospitals should have the skills and strategies to promote commitment to change include developing positive expectations about change positive outcomes.
Chest X-ray radiography and computed tomography, the two mainstay modalities in thoracic radiology, are under active investigation with deep learning technology, which has shown promising performance in various tasks, including detection, classification, segmentation, and image synthesis, outperforming conventional methods and suggesting its potential for clinical implementation. However, the implementation of deep learning in daily clinical practice is in its infancy and facing several challenges, such as its limited ability to explain the output results, uncertain benefits regarding patient outcomes, and incomplete integration in daily workflow. In this review article, we will introduce the potential clinical applications of deep learning technology in thoracic radiology and discuss several challenges for its implementation in daily clinical practice.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to discover long-term effects of Problem-based learning (PBL) and Simulation Problem-based learning (S-PBL) on critical thinking, problem solving abilities, learning attitude, motivation, and learning satisfaction among nursing students at Cheju Halla College. These students were taking problem based learning and simulation as a problem based learning method with an integrated curriculum. Methods: This study used a pretest-posttest with repeated measure design. Data was collected using convenience sampling from the beginning of the 1st semester to the end of the 2nd year when the PBL and S-PBL were completed by those who were enrolled in the integrated nursing curriculum. One-hundred eighty-three surveys were collected and analyzed during the repeat data collection. Results: There we restatistically significant differences of critical thinking, problem solving abilities, learning attitude, motivation and satisfaction post PBL and S-PBL. Conclusion: This study contributes to our understanding of outcomes from the PBL and S-PBL approach. The students undertaking PBL and S-PBL demonstrated that they developed a more positive attitude about their educational experience. In addition, students' tendency to think critically and problem solve improved through the use of the PBL and S-PBL approach.
