Antimicrobial activity of vegetable and fruit juices on the scalp bacteria

  • Twenty bacterial strains were isolated and identified from human scalps. These strains were identified as 14 Bacillus megaterium, 1 Bacillus subtilis, 3 Staphylococcus aureus and 2 Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Two genuses are Gram-positive. In order to search for antimicrobial substances from natural plants, eighteen plant materials being made of perilla leaf as well as spices including garlic and ginger were used. The effects of these vegetable and fruit juices on the growth of scalp bacterial strains were investigated. Garlic and lemon juices showed antimicrobial activities on the growth of twenty bacterial strains belonging to 4 kinds of species. Onion, spring onion and leek juices inhibited the growth of only one bacterial strains Bacillus megeterium MS13.

  • One of the most attractive short-term possibilities for increasing freezing tolerance of winter crops may be the application of chemicals. This research was conducted to determine the effect of two plant growth regulators. Terpal-C and Cerone on freezing tolerance and winter survival of canola. Three cultivars were planted on the michigan state University Agronimy Farm at East Lansing. MI. on Sept. 10. 1992 and 1993 Chemicals were applied to one-month-old plants when they reached the 5 leaf stage. Ion leakage tests for freezing tolerance were conducted before and after chemical treatment. Winter survival was evaluated by counting the plant standing in the fall and spring. Neither of the chemicals. Terpal-C. inhibited natural cold hardening.

Study on Response of Ecosystem to the East Asian Monsoon in Eastern China Using LAI Data Derived from Remote Sensing Information

  • Based on the Leaf Area Index (LAI) data derived from remote sensing information and eco-climate data, the responses of regional ecosystem variations in seasonal and interannual scales to the East Asian monsoon are studied in this paper. It is found that the vegetation ecosystems of eastern China are remarkably correlated with the East Asian monsoon in seasonal and interannual scales. In the seasonal timescale, the obvious variations of the vegetation ecosystems occur with the development of the East Asian monsoon from the south in the spring to the north in the autumn. In the interannual scale, high LAI appears in the strong East Asian monsoon year, whereas low LAI is related to the weak East Asian monsoon year. These further lead to the characteristic of 'onsoon-driven ecosystem' in the eastern China monsoon region, which can be revealed by LAI.

  • This paper proposes a small VCM (Voice coil motor) type actuator using curved suspensions for auto-focusing and zoom motions for mobile information devices. 1'he proposed focusing actuator adopts a nontraditional type of suspension using curved beams in order to extend output displacement within small height restriction. The curved beam is similar to the leaf spring type which is usually used in optical disk drives. In addition, three different materials are considered for the curved suspension model, and Aluminum shows the best dynamic characteristics. The proposed zoom actuator does not use a suspension supporting bobbin but a moving rail and a sloper mechanism by generating rotational force at lens holder. The sensitivity of design parameters on output performance is studied using ANSYS (3D FEM tool). Experiments using a prototype of the proposed actuator model verified the analytical prediction and performance.

두께감소 판형 홀다운스프링 집합체의 탄성강성도 해석

  • 판(leaf)의 너비가 일정하고 두께가 균일하게 감소하는 두께감소 홀다운스프링집합체(Tapered-Thickness Holddown spring Assembly ; TT-HDS)에서 단순 보 이론과 Castigliano의 정리를 이용하여 TT-HDS의 탄성강성도를 해석적으로 구할 수 있도록 종래에 유도되었던 탄성강성도 평가식을 수정하고 확장하였으며 TT-HDS의 기하학적 설계자료를 이용하여 탄성강성도를 평가하였다. 아울러 ANSYS code 의 접촉요소를 이용하여 TT-HDS을 유한요소 모델링하여 탄성강성도를 수치적으로 평가하였다. 평가 결과 전단력 및 축력이 TT-HDS의 탄성강성도에 미치는 영향은 약 0.09∼0.16%정도로서 TT-HDS의 탄성강성도는 주로 굽힘모우멘트에 의해 지배되고 있음이 확인되었다. 또한 접촉요소로 유한요소 모델링하여 평가한 결과는 확장된 평가식으로 평가한 탄성강성도와 매우 잘 일치하고 있음을 발견하였다.

  • In the case of direct connecting the nut of ballscrew to guide table, machining error and misalignment of ballscrew largely affect to the motional accuracy of guideway. For decreasing these influences, two type of floating couplings: leaf spring type and hybrid type which releases the table from nut of ballscrew except feed and rotational direction is proposed in this study. In order to verify practical availability of the proposed floating couplings, motional accuracy, dynamic characteristics and micro step response of hydrostatic guideway, mounted with each type of couplings are tested. The conventional fixed type coupling is also tested as the reference in characteristics. From the results of experiments, it is proved that the hybrid type coupling is superior to other couplings and is available to high precision feeding system with ballscrew.

Effect of Supplementary or Heating Lamps on the Yield, Vase Life, and Leaf Color of Cut Rose (보광등과 난방등이 절화장미 수확량, 절화수명, 엽색에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of different kinds of supplementary lighting or heating lamps on the yield, cut flower life, and leaf color of cut rose were compared and analyzed. For this purpose, light emitting diode lamp (LED), metal halide lamps (MH), and high-pressure sodium lamps (HPS) as the supplementary lamps, and carbon fiber infrared lamp (NCFI) were installed on hydroponic cultivation bed in a cut rose farm. The yield of cut flower rose and the number of marketable flowers were greatly increased in spring and autumn by HPS treatment, but not in winter. The length of flower stalk was longer than that of control in the spring but decreased in winter. It seemed likely that the shorter flower stalk in winter was due to the shortened period of vegetative growth compared to the control because flowering was promoted by supplementary lighting. Vase life was not different among treatments in the autumn when the lighting time was short, but in winter, it was prolonged to 3 more days by only HPS, compared with the control. Leaf color was significantly affected by light treatment in winter rather than autumn. Leaf color was darkened in all supplementary lamps (LED, MH, HPS) treatment, whereas NCFI was similar to the control in leaf color. In conclusion, HPS is considered to be a very good supplementary lamp because it increases the length of flower stalk and the yield and prolongs vase life in cut roses. Even though NCFI could function as a heating lamp radiating a lot of heat, it was considered that the role as a supplementary light is unsatisfactory because the number of marketable flowers decreases and the quality index of cut rose deteriorates by NCFI.

Influence of Gibberellin and Urea treatment on the Production of mulberry leaf and characteristic of silkworm (지베렐린과 요소의 처리가 상수의 수량 및 잠아의 실용형질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted investigate the effect of Gibberellin and Urea on the growth of mulberry tree with the compound treatment, and the characteristic of silkworm when the mulberry leaves simply treated with GB and the compound treatment with GB and Urea were supplied. The results are as follows. 1. Mulberry tree A. The leaf weight per mulberry tree with the compound treatment of GB+ Urea was heavier in spring silkworm and the leaf yield was increased by 7% compared with the non-treatment plot. B. The growth of wattle, leaf length and leaf width was more accelerated in the compound treatment plot of GB+Urea, the single treatment plot of GB and Urea than th!: non-treatment plot in autumn silkworm, and there was observed an incredse yielding effect of 16% in GB+Urea plot, in 16% GB plot and 18% in Urea plot respectively as compared with th: non-treatment plot, hut yield per l000m unit of wattle length was the least in GB plot. C. In the composition of mulberry leaves of treatment, water and crude protein was increased in the compound treatment plot of GB + Urea and the single treatment plot of GB and Urea than the non-treatment plot, but dry matter and carbohydrate were decredsed. 2. Characteristics of Larva in spring silkworm A. The mortality ratio of 4 and 5 instar plot was equally high in the compound treatment plot of GB+ Urea and the pupation ratio of 4 instar plot was lower than other treatment plot. B. Although there was no significant difference observed in the cocoon weight of 10.000 1st-day worms in both 4 and 5 instar plots between each treatment plot, the single treatment plot of GB showed somewhat great than other treatment plots. C. There was no significant difference observed in the cocoon layer ratio between each treatment plot, but 4 instar plots was slightly higher than 5 instar plots. 3. Characteristics of Larva in Autumn silkworm A. The mortality ratio of the compound treatment plot of GB+ Urea and GB was higher than that of the nontreatment and single treatment plot of Urea. B. The pupation ratio of the single treatment plot of Urea was higher than that of the compound treatment plot of GB + Urea, and there was no significant difference observed between other treatment plot. C. The cocoon weight of 10.000 1st-day th instar worms was heavier in the single treatment plot of Urea than nontreatment plot, GB+Urea plot and GB plot. D. The cocoon layer ratio was no significant difference observed between each-treatment.

Effects of Elevated Spring Temperatures on the Growth and Fruit Quality of the Mandarin Hybrid 'Shiranuhi' (봄철 가온처리가 부지화의 생장과 과실품질에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of elevated spring temperatures on the growth and fruit quality of the mandarin hybrid 'Shiranuhi' [(Citrus unshiu ${\times}$ C. sinensis) ${\times}$ C. reticulata] were investigated in plastic greenhouses, to develop a cropping system to improve the quality of the fruit and increase the income of growers on Jeju Island, South Korea. Under conditions of elevated temperature I ($25/15^{\circ}C$, day/night) and elevated temperature II ($28/18^{\circ}C$, day/night) during early spring, budburst was advanced by 11 and 15 d, and full bloom by 22 and 45 d, respectively, compared to those of the plants grown at ambient air temperature in a plastic greenhouse. Elevated temperatures decreased the number of spring shoots but increased mean spring shoot length and leaf area. Growing 'Shiranuhi' trees at elevated temperatures resulted in increases in mean fruit weight and fruit L/D ratio (> 1.0). In addition, fruit color development was significantly advanced in trees grown under elevated temperatures during early spring, which allowed the fruit to be harvested 1-2 months earlier than trees grown under ambient air temperature. Fruit soluble solids content (SSC) and titratable acidity (TA) at harvest were similar between elevated temperature I and ambient air temperature, but were significantly higher than at elevated temperature II. Considering fruit quality, harvest time, and yield, the elevated temperature treatment regime of $25/15^{\circ}C$ (day/night) during early spring could be useful for cultivation of the mandarin hybrid 'Shiranuhi' to increase the income of growers.

Effects of Application Seasons and Rates of Swine liquid Manure on Yield and Quality in Rice (가축분뇨 발효액비 시용시기와 시용량이 벼의 수량과 미질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of application seasons and rates with animal liquid slurry on the rice yield and quality. The treatments were application seasons (autumn, spring) and application rates of animal liquid slurry 80, 100, 120, 140% N levels of based on 11kg N/10a, chemical fertilizer as control plot. Field experiment was conducted at Cheorwon, Gangwon-Do in 2007. The results was as follows; The plant height and tiller's number at the application of spring season were higher than that at the autumn application. In the plot of 140% level at the spring application, the plant height and tillers were higher, and the color of leaf was darker than that of the chemical fertilizer. The plot of 140% level in spring application was increased the lodging damage of rice. Rice yield was reduced at 7%, 13% in the plot of 120%, 140 N/10a slurry level in the spring application compared to the chemical fertilizer, respectively. But rice yield at the autumn application was not significantly difference between chemical fertilizer and plots of liquid manure. The rice quality of the 120 and 140% slurry in spring application was significantly lower than that of chemical fertilizer. Total nitrogen contents and nitrogen uptake in rice plant were higher at the plot of 120, 140%N in the spring than that of chemical fertilizer. To reduce the lodging damage and increase the yield and quality of rice was needed suitable application of liquid manure In spring season.
