  • Site-specific allometric equations relating aboveground tree component biomass and leaf area to tree diameter, basal area, sapwood cross-sectional area and sapwood volume were developed using the destructive harvesting method for Pinus rigida Mill., Larix leptolepis Gordon, and Quercus serrata Thunb. stands in Yangpyeong, Kyonggi Province. There were significantly strong correlations between aboveground tree component biomass or leaf area and diameter at breast height (DBH), basal area, sapwood area and sapwood volume. For a similar diameter tree, the three species had a similar stem wood biomass. However, carbon allocation patterns to stem bark, foliage, branch and total aboveground biomass differed among the three species. Specific leaf area and the ratio of leaf area to sapwood cross-sectional area of the three species were significantly different. Allometric equations seemed To be related to leaf habit or leaf longevity. To elucidate the effect of leaf habit or leaf longevity on allometry and canopy characteristics clearly, more intensive studies are needed.

  • Wild soybean plants(Glycine ussuriensis) collected from Korea(47 strains) and abroad(41 strains) were grown under field condition and classified according to the growth habit. Seeds were analyzed for protein content. The results were as follows: 1. Wild soybean plants were classified into three groups each by seed size, growth habit of stem, leaf size and flowering time. 2. Seed protein was higher in the strains with large leaves, tendril, stem or late flowering. 3. Glycine gracilis, supposed to be the intermediate species between cultivated and wild soybean(according to the stem growth habit, straight or semitendril, and seed size) was medium in protein content of seeds. 4. The average protein content of Glycine ussuriensis, 43.2%, was highest in comparison with those of others such as G. gracilis, 37.5%, or G. max, 36.2%. 5. One hundred seed weight of Amphicarpaea trisperm, similar to the wild soybean, was almost same as Glycine ussuriensis, but protein content of this species was lower than wild soybeans.

  • Seven barley varieties were tested under three different vernalization durations for observing the effects of vernalization duration and different growth habit on shoot apex development and heading date. The final leaf number per main stem in 3 and 6 weeks vernalized seedlings did not vary among varieties, but ranged 7 to 14 leaves in non-vernalized seedlings. The winter types had more leaves than the spring types. Days for each leaf emergence in non-vernalization were retarded 1. 3 to 1. 5 days in comparison with 3 or 6 weeks vernalized seedlings. In general, the leaf emergence speed of spring types was faster than that of winter types. The VI stage whose double ridge formed, did not vary in 6 weeks vernalization, but spring (Gangbori & Dongbori 2) and facultative or winter types showed two conspicuous difference patterns. The differences of days to X stage were great among different vernalization duration and varieties; the stage of spring types was reached faster than that of winter types. The early varieties within the same growth habit were reached to X stage faster, and the time of flag leaf emergence showed the similar tendency to the differentiation of X stage. The time of the first rapid stem internode elongation became late as for incompletely vernalized seedlings. The time within the same vernalization duration became later in winter types than in spring types, and even within the same growth habit, the time of early varieties became faster than that of late varieties. The growth habit in especially non-vernalized seedlings had highly significant correlation coefficients with the times of leaf development speed, leaf number per main stem, the first rapid stem internode and young spike elongations, X stage, and flag leaf emergence. However, the relationship between growth habit and time of heading in the field was not close.

  • This experiment was carried out at paddy field (commercial silty loam soil) in the southwestern Korea. Pungsannamulkong, a determinate growth habit, was a relatively high yielding and late maturing cultivar, and Hannamkong, a semi determinate growth habit, was a relatively low yielding and early maturing cultivar. Seeds were sowed at two plants and with a planting density of $70{\times}10cm$ on May 26, 2003. Fertilizer was applied prior to planting at a rate of 3.0-3.0-3.4g $(N-P_2O_5-K_2O)\;per\;m^2$ by all basal fertilizations. Experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. Seed yield was higher in Pungsannamulkong by 362g per $m^2$ than in Hannamkong of 260g per $m^2$ Also, the number of pod, number of seed, and number of seed per pod were greater in Pungsannamulkong than in Hannamkong. The number of leaves per $m^2$ showed similar with two soybean cultivars up to August 24 but thereafter it decreased in Hannamkong. The leaf area up to August 4 increased in Hannamkong higher than in Pungsannamulkong, but after that time, Pungsannamulkong had greater leaf area than Hannamkong. The shoot and leaf dry matter of two soybean cultivars from June 23 to August 4 were similar but thereafter, Pungsannamulkong had a significantly greater than Hannamkong. Crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR) and net assimilate rate (NAR) for Punsannamulkong were relatively higher than Hannamkong but leaf area ratio (LAR) and specific leaf weight (SLW) showed higher in Hannamkong. Most of leaves distributed in the ranges of 80-90cm and 60-70cm from the soil surface in Punsannamulkong and Hannamkong, respectively. Pods of Punsannamulkong ranged 10-80cm from the soil surface and most of pods were distributed at 40-50cm. Photosynthetic rate at the flowering stage showed a significant difference between cultivars in the upper most leaf position. There was no significant difference of the photosynthetic rate at $7^{tn}$ leaf at the flowering stage, and the uppermost and 7th leaf position at the seed development stage between two soybean cultivars.

  • Due to the wide and effective use of sucker controlling chemicals, gentic studies on the suckering habits of tobacco plants have long been neglected. So, to investigate the genetic basis of suckering, crosses between "Little Dutch" and "Cuban" were made, and subsequent generations, $F_1F_2,\;BC_1,\;BC_2,$ and parents were grown on the field. Several morphological characters were measured and the relation among them were analyzed. Correlation coefficients between leaf shape and sucker leaf shape, and the number of suckers and sucker weight were 0.25 and 0.42, both sighificant at 1 % level. But negative correlation between number of suckers per plant and that of leaves was observed, though statistically not significant. Dominance was observed in the number of suckers and amount of suckers produced, and the heritability of sucker shape was calculated as high as 0.88. And two paris of genes seemed to be involved in the inheritance of sucker shape, and narrow leaf appeared as dominant in the $F_1$.inant in the $F_1$.

  • Vegetative characters (e.g. habitat, root, ramification and habit of stem, phyllotaxy, leaf sape, shape of leaf margin, shape of division and lobe of division, number of division, thick and texture of leaf and shape of stipule) on 35 species of Asian Geranium were reviewed to discussion propriety of taxonomic character and evolutionary trends. Wilfordii group is characterized by three divided leaf, Farreri group was grown a high altitude, and Maculatum group is grouped by life cycle of anneal. Arrangement state of leaf is alternate type G, tripartitum, G. eriostemon, and G. erianthum is thought the more primitive than the other taxon, and regarded as more advanced group the sibiricum group and pseudosibiricum group which divided of leaf deeply. Shape of leaf, division degree of lobes, shape of leaf margin and number of division are considered a good identification characters because width of change are fixed between population.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of seeding date on the days and the accumulated temperatures to development stages, leaf emergence, and yield in spring-planted barley. Two barley varieties, Sacheon #6 in spring type (growth habit I) and Saechalssalbori in winter type (growth habit IV), were seeded on four seeding date, Feb. 23, March 4, March 13, and March 24. Growth periods to emergence, heading and maturity were shorten when seeding dates were delayed, except for the heading date of Saechalssalbori (winter type barley)at the later seeding date. The rate of leaf emergence was 0.1915 in a day, and was slightly high when seeding was delayed. The accumulated temperatures were 111-142$^{\circ}C$ for emergence, 683-756$^{\circ}C$ for heading, and 1274-1326$^{\circ}C$ for maturity. In general, the accumulated temperature to heading was higher in Saechalssalbori than in Sacheon #6 because the winter growth habit of Saechalssalbori was not removed perfectly, One-thousand grain weight and yield were reduced by delayed seeding. In order to reduce the yield when barley were planted in spying, it is desirable to select the spring type varieties, and to plant them as early as possible.

  • A new hybrid, Phalaenopsis 'Pink Marble' was made by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration, in 2005. This hybrid was selected from self-crossed progenies of P. '21-1' (collected number) in 1999. In 2001, one line was selected based on the aspects such as flower color, leaf shape, flower stalk, and vigorous growth. Trials were conducted from 2003 to 2005 for evaluation and selection of this cultivar. 'Pink Marble' had a medium flowering habit and a dark pink spot (RHS, RPN74B) on white petal and sepal when fully opened. The number of flowers on each peduncle was 7.5, and flower diameter was 52.3 cm. The general impression of petals and sepals is a plate shape. The thick sepal could extend the long flowering time. The average length of leaf and peduncle were 16.5 cm and 6.8 cm, respectively. It had a half-erect leaf form, and was a fast-growing cultivar. This hybrid is relatively easy to clone.
