Lead has long been considered as a toxic environmental pollutant that severely damages the central nervous system. In various neurogenerative diseases, actrocytes become activated by proinflammatory cytokines. In the present study, we investigated whether lead (Pb$^{2+}$) affects inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in activated glial cells. Rat primary glial cells were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 1 ${\mu}$g/ml) plus IFN$_{\gamma}$(100 U/ml). Pre-treatment of Pb$^{2+}$ increased nitric oxide (NO) production in LPS/IFN$_{\gamma}$-stimulated glial cells. Lead itself, however, suppressed the basal production of NO in control glial cells. Addition of the iNOS inhibitors L-NAME (1 mM) and L-NNA (800 ${\mu}$M) prevented the Pb$^{2+}$-induced increase in NO production. Western blot analysis showed that pre-treatment of Pb$^{2+}$ augmented LPS/IFN$_{\gamma}$-induced increase in iNOS immunoreactivity, which was well correlated with the increased NO production. In addition, pre-treatment of Pb$^{2+}$ synergistically increased the iNOS mRNA expression induced by LPS and IFN${\gamma}$. The present results indicate that lead intoxication adversely affect brain function by potentiating iNOS expression and NO production in activated glial cells observed in various neurodegenerative diseases.

Transient liquid phase processing was investigated to decrease processing temperatures while maintaining useful piezoelectric properties in the lead zirconate titanate (PZT) system. Niobium oxide$(Nb_2O_5)$ modified crystalline PZT (PZTN) powder was combined with lead silicate $(PS; PbO-SiO_2)$ glass powder and crystalline titania, zirconia, and niobia. Firing above the melting temperature of the lead silicate $(PS; Tm \risingdotseq\; 714^{\circk}C)$ resulted in liquid phase densification of the PZTN followed by dissolution of the titania, zirconia, and niobia into the liquid phase, and crystallization of additional PZTN. The addition of crystalline titania, zirconia, and niobia to react with the lead oxide from the lead silicate phase resulted in an increase in the dielectric and Piezoelectric properties.

Photoconductive poly crystalline lead oxide coated on amorphous thin film transistor (TFT) arrays is the best candidate for direct digital x-ray detector for medical imaging. Thicker films with lessening density often show lower x-ray induced charge generation and collection becomes less efficient. In this work, we present a new methodology used for the high density deposition of PbO. We investigate the structural properties of the films using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy experiments. The film coatings of approximately $200\;{\mu}m$ thickness were deposited on $2"{\times}2"$ conductive-coated glass substrates for measurements of dark current and x-ray sensitivity. The lead oxide (PbO) films of $200\;{\mu}m$ thickness were deposited on glass substrates using a wet coating process in room temperature. The influence of post-deposition annealing on the characteristics of the lead oxide films was investigated in detail. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy have been employed to obtain information on the morphology and crystallization of the films. Also we measured dark current, x-ray sensitivity and linearity for investigation of the electrical characteristics of films. It was found that the annealing conditions strongly affect the electrical properties of the films. The x-ray induced output charges of films annealed in oxygen gas increases dramatically with increasing annealing temperatures up to $500^{\circ}C$ but then drops for higher temperature anneals. Consequently, the more we increase the annealing temperatures, the better density and film quality of the lead oxide. Analysis of this data suggests that incorporation and decomposition reactions of oxygen can be controlled to change the detection properties of the lead oxide film significantly. Post-deposition thermal annealing is also used for densely film. The PbO films that are grown by new methodology exhibit good morphology of high density structure and provide less than $10\;pA/mm^2$ dark currents as they show saturation in gain (at approximate fields of $4\;V/{\mu}m$). The ability to operate at low voltage gives adequate dark currents for most applications and allows voltage electronics designs.
Lead monoxide has two phases at room temperature. One is a yellow orthorhombic phase, the other is a redtetragonal phase. Sometimes two phases are hybrided. The specificity of phase transitions of lead oxide is found during the milling of the batch including lead oxide. The pure orthorhombic phase of PbO can be transformed to the tetragonal phase perfectly by wet ball milling (milling liquid is distilled water) without thermal energy. However, when ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and aceton are used as milling liquid, respectively, the hybrid form of orthorhombic andtetragonal phases is obtained by wet ball milling. From the hybrid form heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs, this work results that mechanical phase transition of orthorhombic phase make a new form as distorted type orthorhombic phase of PbO.

Objectives : Licorice has been commonly used as a detoxification agent. We previously reported that licorice and its component, liquiritigenin, exhibits cytoprotective activity against Pb-induced toxicity. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of liquiritigenin on the lead-induced cytotoxicity in PC-12 cells. Methods : PC-12 cells were pre-treated with liquiritigenin, and further incubated with lead 100 ${\mu}M$ for $12^{\sim}48$ hours. The viability of PC-12 cells was measured by MTT assay, and the levels of proteins were analysed by western blot. Results : Severe cytotoxicity was induced and nitric oxide (NO) production was augmented by the exposure of lead. Liquiritigenin protected cells from lead-induced cytoxicity and reduced NO production in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibition of NO production was due to the suppression of iNOS protein via the inhibition of $NF-{\kappa}B$ nuclear translocation, determined by western blot analysis. Conclusions : These results suggest that liquiritigenin may exert cytoprotective effect against lead toxicity by inhibiting NO production.
Supported lead oxide catalysts were prepared by using ${\alpha}-,{\beta}-{\gamma}$-alumina, and MgO as a support. Among the supported lead oxide catalysts, MgO-supported catalyst showed the highest $C_2^+$ hydrocarbon selectivity for the methane conversion into $C_2^+$ hydrocarbons, but ${\gamma}$-alumina-supported PbO catalyst gave the highest $CO_2$ selectivity. And ${\alpha}$-alumina-supported catlyst showed the midium activity, whereas ${\beta}$-alumina-supported catalyst gave little activity. These reaction characteristics seemed to be largely dependent on the acticity of lattice oxygens in supported catalysts, which would be influnto be largely dependent on the activity of lattice oxygens in supported catalysts, which would be influenced in the interaction between the supports and lead oxides and the properties of supports. Especially, much higher ration of (002)/(111) peak intensities for PbO phase on MgO support than on the other supports in X-ray diffraction analysis was considered to be ab evidence that methane oxidative coupling of methane might be so-called structure-sensitive reaction, and this seemed to be an example of surface oxide-support interaction (SOSI) in the oxidative coupling reaction.
Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behaviors of Alloy 690 were studied in lead-containing aqueous alkaline solutions using the slow strain rate tension (SSRT) tests in 0.1M and 2.5M NaOH with and without PbO at $315^{\circ}C$. The side and fracture surfaces of the alloy were then examined using scanning electron microscopy after the SSRT test. Microstructure and composition of the surface oxide layer were analyzed by using a field emission transmission electron microscopy, equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Even though Alloy 690 was almost immune to SCC in 0.1M NaOH solution, irrespective of PbO addition, the SCC resistance of Alloy 690 decreased in a 2.5M NaOH solution and further decreased by the addition of PbO. Based on thermodynamic stability and solubility of oxide, high Cr of 30wt% in the Alloy 690 is favorable to SCC in mild alkaline and acidic solutions whereas the SCC resistance of high Cr Alloy 690 is weakened drastically in the strong alkaline solution where the oxide is not stable any longer and solubility is too high to form a passive oxide locally.
Barium Bismuth Oxide Borate (BBOB) has been synthesized for the first time using solution combustion technique. SEM analysis reveal flower shape of the nanoparticles. The formation of the nanoparticles has been confirmed through XRD & FTIR studies which gives the physical and chemical structure of the novel material. The UV light absorption is observed in the range 200-300 nm. The present study highlights the radiation shielding ability of BBOB for different radiations like X/Gamma rays, Bremsstrauhlung and neutrons. The gamma shielding efficiency is comparable to that of lead in lower energy range and lesser than lead in the higher energy range. The bremsstrauhlung exposure constant is comparably larger for BBOB NPs than that of concrete and steel however it is lesser than that of lead. The beauty of BBOB nanoparticles lies in, high absorption of radiations and low emission of secondary radiations when compared to lead. In addition, the neutron shielding parameters like scattering length, absorption and scattering cross sections of BBOB are found to be much better than lead, steel and concrete. Thus, BBOB nanoparticles are highly efficient in absorbing X/Gamma rays, neutrons and bremsstrauhlung radiations.
Objectives : To evaluate the elect of glutathione(GSH) on lead induced modulation of nitric oxide(NO) synthesis, and to examine how lead modulates NO production in macrophages. Methods : This study was observed in a culture of RAW 264.7 cells, which originated from a tumor in a Balb/c mouse that was induced by the Abelson murine leukemia virus. The compounds investigated were lead chloride, N-acetyl-cystein(NAC), and Buthionine Sulfoximine( BSO). Results : ATP synthesis in RAW 264.7 cells was unchanged by each lead concentration exposure in a dose dependent manner. The NO synthesis was decreased when exposed to lead($PbCl_2$) concentration $0.5{\mu}M$. The presence of $300{\mu}M$ NAC, used as a pretreatment in the culture medium, caused the recovery of the lead induced decrease in NO synthesis, but in the presence of $300{\mu}M$ BSO as a pretreatment, there was no recoverey. Pretreatment with NAC and BSO had no affect on ATP synthesis at any of the lead concentrations used. Conclusions : These results indicated that GSH has a protective effect toward lead toxicity, and suggested that the inhibition of NO production in macrophage due to lead toxicity may be related to cofactors of iNOS (inducible nitric oxide synthase)
The electrical conductivity of the Niobium Oxide-Lead Oxide systems containing 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 mol% of Lead Oxide has been measured in a temperature range 700${\sim}$$1100^{\circ}C$ under oxygen partial pressure of 2.0 ${\times}$$10^{-1}$${\sim}$1.0 ${\times}$$10^{-5}$ atm. The electrical conductivities of the system decreased with increasing PbO mol% and varied from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-1}$$ohm^{-1}$$cm^{-1}$. The activation energy for conductivity was about 1.70 eV. The oxygen pressure dependence of electrical conductivity revealed that the system was a mixed conductor between ionic and electronic conductivities at high oxygen pressures and a n-type electronic conductivity with oxygen pressure dependence of -1/4 order at low oxygen pressures. The defect structure and electrical conduction mechanism of the system have been discussed with the data obtained.
