  • Nickel recovery method was studied by the wet process from the catalyst used in hydrogenation process. Nickel content in waste catalyst was about 16%. At the waste catalyst leaching system by the alkaline solution, selective leaching of nickel was possible by amine complex formation reaction from ammonia water and ammonium chloride mixed leachate. The best leaching condition of nickel from mixed leachate was acquired at the condition of pH 8. LIX65N as chelating solvent extractant was used to recover nickel from alkaline leachate. The purity of recovered nickel was higher than 99.5%, and the whole quantity of nickel was recovered from amine complex.

  • Recently, the gold leaching technologies draw much interest to recover gold from low grade ores. Current leaching processes mostly use cyanide as the leaching agent, due to its high leaching efficiencies and cost-effectiveness. However, use of cyanide is severely problematic, because of toxicity and thereby environmental risks, and requires strict regulations and environmental management. Especially, this issue becomes further apparent when cyanide should be applied for dump or heap leaching for low cost gold recovery along with recent trends. To resolve this issue, the alternative leaching processes using thiosulfate or halogen compounds, instead of cyanide, have been studied and developed but there have been lots of difficulties toward commercialization, and therefore further research should be conducted. The commercialization of dump or heap bioleaching technologies should be urgently required for effective direct biogenic gold recovery from low grade ores or tailings without use of cyanide.

The reactive amendment agent used in this study is mainly composed of inorganic solidification agent and reactive adsorptive material. The reactive agent has a function of soil-cement-agent solidification and harmlessness of contaminant in waste. The reactive agent is environmentally friendly material to the surrounding environment. In this study, a series of tests and experiments including unconfined compressive strength, permeability, pH test, constituent analysis, leaching test were carried out to analyse engineering and environmental characteristics of solidified sludge treated reactive agent. The result of this research shows that the solidified sludge treated reactive agent is increased in strength and decreased in contaminant concentration.

  • Bisphenol-A (BPA), a known endocrine disruptor, is a main building block of epoxy resin which is widely used as a coating agent in residential water storage tanks. Therefore, BPA leaching from the epoxy resin may have adverse effects on human health. The possibility of BPA leaching from three epoxy resins were tested with a modified KS D 8502 method at 20, 50, 75 and $100^{\circ}C$ in deionized water and the specified test water, respectively. BPA leached to the test water was identified using GC-MS and quantified with GC-FID after a sequential extraction and concentration. The results showed that BPA leaching has occurred in all three samples tested. The quantify of BPA leaching from unit area of epoxy resin coating was in the range of $10.677{\sim}273.120{\mu}g/m^2$ for sample A, 29.737~1734.045 for sample B and 52.857~548.778 for sample C depending on the test temperature, respectively. In general, the amount of BPA leaching increased as the water temperature increases. This result implies a higher risk of BPA leaching to drinking water during a hot summer season. In addition, microbial growth, measured by colony forming units, in epoxy coated water tanks was higher than that in a stainless steel tank suggesting that compounds leaching from epoxy resin may support the growth of microorganisms in a residential water holding tank.

  • Recently, Orimulsion (a bitumen-in emulsion) has received increasing attention as an alternative fuel. Orimulsion combusion produces an ash rich in V, Ni and Mg which are processed to recover metals. As a basic study to recover V from Orimulsion ash, physico-chemcial properties and leaching behaviours were investigated. Orimulsion ash was fine size grains ($d_{50}$ 5.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$) with 16% V, 4 % Ni and 9% S. Vanadium was easily leached in water because Orimulsion ash was mainly constituted of metal sulfates. However, the increase of leaching temperature decreased the extraction percentage of vanadium because of hydrolysis of V(V) to vanadium pentoxide. The addition of sulfuric acid could increase the leaching percentage vanadium. In case of alkaline leaching for selective recovery of vanadium, the oxidzing agent such as $H_2$$O_2$ is required to improve the leaching per-centage

  • In this study, a stabilization method was applied to stabilize heavy metals in soils collected from a domestic contaminated area and a Canadian mine site. The stabilizing agent used in the experiment was a solidifying agent developed by KERT Co., Ltd., Korea. The agent was applied to the samples at varying weight ratios of 0, 2, 5, 7, and 10% (w/w). and the concentrations of heavy metals in the effluent were monitored at predetemined time intervals. The results indicated that the stabilization efficiency of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb) increased proportionally until the agent was increased to 5%, which showed almost no leaching of heavy metals after 28 days after agent application. Therefore, addition of 5% relative to soil mass was proposed to be the optimum dose for the stabilization agent.

  • The feasibility study of using converter slag as a solidifying agent of digested sewage sludge cake has been performed. The availability of converter slag as solidifying agent has been investigated by several trial tests. Based on the trial test results, the optimum mixing ratios of sludge cake and solidification additive are estabilished. Finally the solidification characters of sludge cake are elucidated by SEM and EDS. It is ascertained that converter slag with a small amount of quicklime enhences the solidification. From the result of pH test, overall pH of specimens tends to decrease slowly with curing time. After solidifying specimens had been cured for 7 days, these are water-cured for 24 hours. The weight and strength of all the specimens are nearly the same regardless of the mixed ratios of solidifying agent. The result of leaching tests for four heavy metal ions, Cd, $Cr^{6+}$, Pb and Cu show that the leaching strength becomes below the decision criteria of the specific wastes, respectively. The SEM observation of the delicate structure shows that needlelike crystals appear after solidification which are not observed before. From the EDS analysis, it is found that the main ingredients of needlelike crystals are Ca, Si, Al and O.

  • A sulfuric acid leaching of $LiCoO_2$as cathodic active materials of lithium ion secondary batteries was investigated in terms of reaction variables. In the absence of a reducing agent, the extraction of cobalt was less than 40% in 2 M sulfuric acid at $75^{\circ}C$ instead of that of lithium could be almost 100% in the same conditions. To improve the Co extraction, hydrogen peroxide was used as a reducing agent in the range 2~20 vol%. When over 10vo1% hydrogen peroxide was added, the extractions of both metals were improved to about 95%. It seems to be due to the reduction of Co(III) to Co(II) that can be readily dissolved. The extractions of Co and Li were increased with increasing $H_2$$SO_4$concentration and temperature, and amount of hydrogen peroxide and with decreasing of pulp density. The optimum leaching conditions were determined at $2 M H_2$$SO_4$concentration, $75^{\circ}C$ operating temperature, 100 g/L. initial pulp density, 20 vol% $H_2$$O_2$addition and 30 min.

  • Characteristics on the sulfuric acid leaching of zinc and manganese from the spent zinc-carbon battery powders obtained by cushing and magnetic separation, were investigated with the variation of sulfuric acid concentration, reaction temperature, stir-ring speed and solid/liquid ratio. The sample powders were composed of Zn metal, ZnO, $MnO_2$ and $Mn_2$$O_3$. and it was found that the selective leaching of zinc was difficult in this system. At the condition of S/L ratio 1:10, IM H$_2$$SO_4$, $60^{\circ}C$ and 200 rpm, leaching rate of Zn and Mn are 92% and 35% respectively. The concentration of Zn and Mn in the leaching solution are 19.5 g/l, 7.8 g/l and pH of that solution is 0.75. It was confirmed at reducing agent should be added to increase e leaching rate of manganese with sulfuric acid.
