  • In order to monitor the pesticide residues in rice paddy soils and paddy waters in Korea and evaluate leachabilities to groundwater of the pesticides detected, paddy soils and paddy waters were collected twice from 40 sites of rice growing paddy fields in July and August in 2011, respectively. Pesticide residues in the samples were analyzed by multi-residue method with GC and HPLC. Five pesticides, such as butachlor, cypermethrin, iprobenfos, oxadiazon, and pendimethalin were detected from thirteen paddy soils and detection rate was about 16.3%, while no pesticide was detected in paddy water. As a results of the estimation of leachabilities for the pesticides detected using GUS (groundwater ubiquity score), their GUSs were less than 1.3, representing they have no potentials to leach into groundwater.

  • Mine tailings generated during mining activity often contain high concentrations of heavy metals, with pyrite-containing mine tailings in particular being a major cause of environmental problems in mining areas. Chemical cell technology, or fuel cell technology, can be applied to leach heavy metals in pyrite-containing mine tailings. As pyrite dissolves through spontaneous oxidation (i.e. galvanic oxidation) in the anode compartment of the cell, $Fe^{3+}$, sulfuric acid are generated. A decrease in pH due to the generation of sulfuric acid allows heavy metals to be leached from pyrite-containing mine tailings. In this study, pyrite was dissolved for 4 weeks at $23^{\circ}C$ in an acidic solution (pH 2) and in a galvanic reactor, which induces galvanic oxidation, and total Fe leached from pyrite and pH were compared in order to investigate if galvanic oxidation can facilitate pyrite oxidation. The change in the pyrite surface was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Comparing the total Fe leached from the pyrite, there were 2.9 times more dissolution of pyrite in the galvanic reactor than in the acidic solution, and thus pH was lower in the galvanic reactor than in the acidic solution. Through SEM analysis of the pyrite that reacted in the galvanic reactor, linear-shaped cracks were observed on the surface of the pyrite. The study results show that pyrite dissolution was facilitated through the galvanic oxidation in the galvanic reactor, and also implied that the galvanic oxidation can be one remediation option for pyrite-containing mine tailings.

  • In this report two experiments were carried out. Vertical distribution of exchangeable potassium(K) of soil in the orchardgrass meadow was investigated‘ a and K leaching from soil was monitored under lysimeter condition throughout one year. The results obtained a are as follows; The difference in the exchangeable soil K content b between the soil layers was very small in K-zero plot of the orchard grass meadow, but it was significant in K¬h high plot (Experiment 1). T The volume of leached water from the Iysime ter was a about 471 liters/m2 during a year and the amount of leached water was influenced by the precipitation. D During the investigation the quantity of leached K was 2 22.3 g/$m^2$. About 40 % of the total K in a year leached out during the first two months, May and June, after the start of the experiment. On the other hand, leached K amounted to 13.2 g/$m^2$ (60 % of the total K leached) during the period of ten months from July, 1985 to A April, 1986, when forages were harvested from the soil o of the lysimeter (Experiment 2). From the above results, it was known that K leach¬i ing from grassland soil can be also occurred in consider¬a able amount when the growth stage of forage is not d developed or soil does not become solid on such a p period as immediately after grassland improvement or e establishment. However, unless the K leaching from soil s seems to be little under the condition of permanent g grassland ecosystem with higher grade of soil hardness a and possibly with compact density of forage plants.

  • The aim of this study was to leach penalty elements, such as Bi and As, effectively through microwave leaching of a gold concentrate sample containing penalty elements with nitric acid solution. For this purpose, the time effect of microwave leaching, nitric acid concentration effect, and sample addition effect in a microwave were examined. The experiment, demonstrated that the leaching rate of penalty elements increased as microwave leaching time and nitric acid concentration increased and concentration addition decreased. When a microwave heating experiment was carried out on the concentrate and ore minerals, Bi was removed by as much as 90%, and the phase of arsenopyrite was transformed in the order of arsenopyrite (FeAsS), pyrrhotite (FeS), and hematite ($Fe_2O_3$). When the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was carried out with solid residue, elemental sulfur and anglesite were identified. The intensity of the XRD peaks of elemental sulfur and anglesite increased, and the peaks were sharper when the microwave leaching time was 12 min instead of 1 min, the nitric acid concentration was 4 M in rather than 0.5 M, and the concentration addition was 30 g rather than 5 g. This was probably because more elemental sulfur and anglesite were generated in the leaching solution as the leaching efficiency increased. Bi can be leached as valuable elements in the leaching solution through microwave leaching processes while they are released to the environment through a microwave heating processes.

  • A study on the solvent extraction for the separation and recovery of Ni and Li from the leaching solution of active cathode materials of Li-ion batteries was investigated using PC88A(2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester). The experimental parameters, such as the pH of the solution, concentration of extractant and phase ratio were observed. Experimental results showed that the extraction percent of Ni and Li and separation factor of Ni/Li were increased with increasing the equilibrium pH. More than 99.4% of Ni and 28.7% of Li were extracted in eq. pH 8.5 by 25% PC88A and the separation factor of Ni/Li was 411.6. From the analysis of McCabe-Thiele diagram, 99% of Ni was extracted by three extraction stages at phase ratio(A/O) of 1.5. Stripping of Ni and Li from the loaded organic phases can be accomplished by sulfuric acid as a stripping reagent and 50-60g/L of $H_2SO_4$ was effective for the stripping of Ni.

  • In new millennium, wide-reaching demands for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst have been increased gradually in new millennium. SCR catalyst can prevent the NOx emission to protect the environment. In SCR catalyst the main composition of the catalyst is typically TiO2 (70~80%), WO3 (7~10%), V2O5 (~1%) and others. When the SCR catalysts are used up and disposed to landfills, it is problematic that those should exist in the landfill site permanently due to their extremely low degradability. A new advanced technology needs to be developed primarily to protect environment and then recover the valuable metals. Hydrometallurgical techniques such as leaching and liquid-liquid extraction was designed and developed for the spent SCR catalyst processing. In a first stage, V and W selectively leached from spent SCR catalyst, then both the metals were processed by liquid-liquid extraction process. Various commercial extractants such as D2EHPA, PC 88A, TBP, Cyanex 272, Aliquat 336 were tested for selective extraction of title metals. Scrubbing and stripping studies were tested and optimized for vanadium and tungsten extraction and possible separation. 3rd phase studies were optimized by using iso-decanol reagent.

  • Bioleaching experiments were effectively carried out at $42^{\circ}C$, $52^{\circ}C$ and $62^{\circ}C$ to leach the more valuable metal ions from sphalerite using bacteria. The pH values of the bioleaching solution were constantly maintained for 10 days in the range of 2.40 to 2.55. In these bioleaching experiments, rod-shaped bacteria attached to the sphalerite surface were continuously observed in the sample. Along with the increase in the leaching temperatures, the concentration of Zn and Pb increased in the control sample of leachates, whereas the concentration of Fe increased in the sample containing bacteria. At $42^{\circ}C$, $52^{\circ}C$ and $62^{\circ}C$ the biological leaching content of Zn was found to be 9.5, 2.8 and 2.9 times higher than that in the chemical leaching content, respectively. At these temperatures, the content of Pb in the bacterial sample of the leachate was detected to be 14.8, 7.4 and 3.8 times higher than that of the control sample of the leachate, respectively.

  • In order to obtain pure metallic Te from gold concentrate, roasting treatment, hypochlorite leaching, Fe removal and electrolysis experiments were carried out. The contents of Au, Ag and Te from the concentrate sample and roasted sample were much more soluble in the hypochlorite solution than in aqua regia digestion, whereas the metals Pb, Zn, Fe and Cu were easier to leach with the aqua regia than the hypochlorite. With the addition of NaOH in the hypochlorite leaching solution prior to electrolysis, the Fe removal rate achieved was only 96% in the concentrate sample, while it reached 98% in the roasted sample. The results of electrolysis for 240 min, 98% of the metallic copper was recovered from the concentrate sample, while 99% was obtained from the roasted sample due to the removal of S by roasting. The amount of anode slime was also greater in the electrolytic solution with the roasted sample than with the concentrate sample. The results on the anode slime after the magnetic separation process showed the amount of metallic pure native tellurium recovered was greater in the roasted sample than in the concentrate sample.

  • One of the most recent issues facing the pesticides regulatory process is the assessment of the potential for pesticides to leach through soil and appear in groundwater. Since Jeju island depends on a hydrogeologically vulnerable aquifer system as its principle source of drinking water, it is important to identify which pesticides are the most likely to result in groundwater contamination. The objective of this study was to assess groundwater contamination risk of 21 pesticides (12 insecticides, 6 herbicides and 3 fungicides) in Jeju soils using groundwater ubiquity score (GUS). Considering GUS estimated in 21 representative series of Jeju soils, generally herbicides showed relatively higher leaching potentials and insecticides showed lower leaching potentials. Groundwater contamination risk was higher in the order of bromacil > metolachlor > alachlor > linuron pretilachlor > butachlor for herbicides, carbofuran > ethoprophos > diazinone > dimethoate > penthoate > mecarbam > methidathion > endosulfan > fenitrothion > parathion > chlorpyrifos > terbufos for insecticides, and metalaxyl > chlorothalonil > triadimefon for fungicides. Among the tested pesticides alachlor, metolachlor, bromacil, ethoprophos and carbofuran were classified as the pesticides of very high or high groundwater contamination potential. Although the ranking of the leaching potential was essentially determined on the base of the intrinsic properties of the chemicals and environmental properties, variation of the relative groundwater contamination potentials of each pesticides in different soils were not significant. Therefore, the above ranking of groundwater contamination risk would be applied in most of Jeju soils. To lower the possibility of pesticide contamination of groundwater, the use of those pesticides classified as high or very high leaching potential should be strictly regulated in Jeju Island.
