  • We determined the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) sequences of Nebalia koreana Song, Moreira & Min, 2012 (Leptostraca) collected from five locations in South Korea, and this represents the first genetic data of this species. The maximum intra-species variation was 1.2% within Nebalia hessleri Martin, Vetter & Cash-Clark, 1996, while inter-species variation ranged from 9.0% (N. hessleri and Nebalia gerkenae Haney & Martin, 2000) to 34.8% (N. hessleri and Nebalia pseudotroncosoi Song, Moreira & Min, 2013). This result is well agreed with the interspecific relationships among Nebalia species based on morphological characteristics. In conclusion, this study showed the usefulness of CO1 sequences as a DNA barcode within the genus Nebalia Leach, 1814.

  • The common goals of designing a routing algorithm are not only to reduce control packet overhead, maximize throughput and minimize the end-to-end delay, but also take into consideration the energy consumption. Scalability is an important factor in designing an efficient routing protocol for wireless sensor networks (WSN's). Three metrics (power consumption, time of transmission and packet loss rate) are used in order to compare three routing protocols which are AODV, DSDV and LEACH.

  • Calcium leaching is one of the main deterioration factors in concrete structures contact with water, such as dams, water treatment structures, and radioactive waste structures. It causes a porous microstructure and may be coupled with various harmful factors resulting in mechanical degradation of concrete. Several numerical modeling studies focused on the calcium leaching depth prediction. However, these required a lot of cost and time for many experiments and analyses. This study presents an artificial neural network (ANN) approach to predict the leaching depth quickly and accurately. Totally 132 experimental data are collected for model training and validation. An optimal ANN model was proposed by ANN topology. Results indicate that the model can be applied to estimate the calcium leaching depth, showing the determination coefficient of 0.91. It might be used as a simulation tool for engineering problems focused on durability.

  • 40 species of the family Caprellidae Leach, 1814 are recorded in Korean waters. Caprella aino Utinomi, 1943 was newly collected from seaweed farms from the southeastern waters of Korea. C. aino was firstly reported in Japanese waters in 1943. Adults of C. aino and Caprella mutica Schurin, 1935 are easily distinguished in that C. aino have pereonite II and gnathopod II without setae and two small tubercles of articulation of gills in pereonite III-IV, while C. mutica do pereonite II and gnathopod II covered with setae and those of pereonites III-VII with many tubercles. However, subadult C. mutica is hardly distinguishable from C. aino in that tubercles of pereonite III are less developed and they have inconspicuous setae of pereonite II and gnathopod II. Nevertheless, C. aino is distinguished from subadult C. mutica because adult C. aino have dorsal tubercles on pereonite IV, V, VI, VII unlike that of C. mutica. We report C. aino as a new record in Korean water with comparison of C. mutica.

  • The dose from radionuclides released from high-level radioactive waste (HLW) glasses as they corrode must be taken into account when assessing the performance of a disposal system. In the performance assessment (PA) calculations conducted for the proposed Yucca Mountain, Nevada, disposal system, the release of radionuclides is conservatively assumed to occur at the same rate the glass matrix dissolves. A simple model was developed to calculate the glass dissolution rate of HLW glasses in these PA calculations [1]. For the PA calculations that were conducted for Site Recommendation, it was necessary to identify ranges of parameter values that bounded the dissolution rates of the wide range of HLW glass compositions that will be disposed. The values and ranges of the model parameters for the pH and temperature dependencies were extracted from the results of SPFT, static leach tests, and Soxhlet tests available in the literature. Static leach tests were conducted with a range of glass compositions to measure values for the glass composition parameter. The glass dissolution rate depends on temperature, pH, and the compositions of the glass and solution, The dissolution rate is calculated using Eq. 1: $rate{\;}={\;}k_{o}10^{(ph){\eta})}{\cdot}e^{(-Ea/RT)}{\cdot}(1-Q/K){\;}+{\;}k_{long}$ where $k_{0},\;{\eta}$ and Eaare the parameters for glass composition, pH, $\eta$ and temperature dependence, respectively, and R is the gas constant. The term (1-Q/K) is the affinity term, where Q is the ion activity product of the solution and K is the pseudo-equilibrium constant for the glass. Values of the parameters $k_{0},\;{\eta}\;and\;E_{a}$ are the parameters for glass composition, pH, and temperature dependence, respectively, and R is the gas constant. The term (1-Q/C) is the affinity term, where Q is the ion activity product of the solution and K is the pseudo-equilibrium constant for the glass. Values of the parameters $k_0$, and Ea are determined under test conditions where the value of Q is maintained near zero, so that the value of the affinity term remains near 1. The dissolution rate under conditions in which the value of the affinity term is near 1 is referred to as the forward rate. This is the highest dissolution rate that can occur at a particular pH and temperature. The value of the parameter K is determined from experiments in which the value of the ion activity product approaches the value of K. This results in a decrease in the value of the affinity term and the dissolution rate. The highly dilute solutions required to measure the forward rate and extract values for $k_0$, $\eta$, and Ea can be maintained by conducting dynamic tests in which the test solution is removed from the reaction cell and replaced with fresh solution. In the single-pass flow-through (PFT) test method, this is done by continuously pumping the test solution through the reaction cell. Alternatively, static tests can be conducted with sufficient solution volume that the solution concentrations of dissolved glass components do not increase significantly during the test. Both the SPFT and static tests can ve conducted for a wide range of pH values and temperatures. Both static and SPFt tests have short-comings. the SPFT test requires analysis of several solutions (typically 6-10) at each of several flow rates to determine the glass dissolution rate at each pH and temperature. As will be shown, the rate measured in an SPFt test depends on the solution flow rate. The solutions in static tests will eventually become concentrated enough to affect the dissolution rate. In both the SPFt and static test methods. a compromise is required between the need to minimize the effects of dissolved components on the dissolution rate and the need to attain solution concentrations that are high enough to analyze. In the paper, we compare the results of static leach tests and SPFT tests conducted with simple 5-component glass to confirm the equivalence of SPFT tests and static tests conducted with pH buffer solutions. Tests were conducted over the range pH values that are most relevant for waste glass disssolution in a disposal system. The glass and temperature used in the tests were selected to allow direct comparison with SPFT tests conducted previously. The ability to measure parameter values with more than one test method and an understanding of how the rate measured in each test is affected by various test parameters provides added confidence to the measured values. The dissolution rate of a simple 5-component glass was measured at pH values of 6.2, 8.3, and 9.6 and $70^{\circ}C$ using static tests and single-pass flow-through (SPFT) tests. Similar rates were measured with the two methods. However, the measured rates are about 10X higher than the rates measured previously for a glass having the same composition using an SPFT test method. Differences are attributed to effects of the solution flow rate on the glass dissolution reate and how the specific surface area of crushed glass is estimated. This comparison indicates the need to standardize the SPFT test procedure.

  • The routing algorithm many used in the wireless sensor network features the clustering method to reduce the amount of data transmission from the energy efficiency perspective. However, the clustering method results in high energy consumption at the cluster head node. Dynamic clustering is a method used to resolve such a problem by distributing energy consumption through the re-selection of the cluster head node. Still, dynamic clustering modifies the cluster structure every time the cluster head node is re-selected, which causes energy consumption. In other words, the dynamic clustering approaches examined in previous studies involve the repetitive processes of cluster head node selection. This consumes a high amount of energy during the set-up process of cluster generation. In order to resolve the energy consumption problem associated with the repetitive set-up, this paper proposes the Round-Robin Cluster Header (RRCH) method that fixes the cluster and selects the head node in a round-robin method The RRCH approach is an energy-efficient method that realizes consistent and balanced energy consumption in each node of a generated cluster to prevent repetitious set-up processes as in the LEACH method. The propriety of the proposed method is substantiated with a simulation experiment.

  • This study was carried out to recover gold, silver and valuable metals from the printed circuit boards (PCBs) of waste computers. PCBs samples were crushed under 1 mm by a shredder and separated into 30% conducting and loft nonconducting materials by an electrostatic separator. The conducting materials contained valuable metals which were then used as feed materials for magnetic separation. 42% of magnetic materials from the conducting materials was removed by magnetic separation as nonvaluable materials and the others, 58% of non magnetic materials, was used as leaching samples containing 0.227 mg/g Au and 0.697 mg/g Ag. Using the materials of leaching from magnetic separation, more than 95% of copper, iron, zinc, nickel and aluminium was dissolved in 2.0M sulfuric acid solution, added with 0.2M hydrogen peroxide at $85^{\circ}C$. Au and Ag were not extracted in this solution. On the other hand, more than 95% of gold and 100% of silver were leached by the selective leaching with a mixed solvent (0.2M($NH_4$)$_2$$S_2$$O_3$,0.02M $CuSO_4$,0.4M $NH_4$OH). Finally, the residues were reacted with a NaCl solution to leach Pb whereas sulfuric acid was used to leach Sn. Recoveries reached 95% and 98% in solution, respectively.

  • In wireless sensor networks, clustering protocol such as LEACH is an efficient method to increase whole networks lifetime. However, this protocol result in high energy consumption at the cluster head node. Hence, this protocol must changes the cluster formation and cluster head node in each round to prolong the network lifetime. But this method also causes a high amount of energy consumption during the set-up process of cluster formation. In order to improve energy efficiency, in this paper, we propose a new cluster formation algorithm. In this algorithm, we define a intra cluster as the sensor nodes within close proximity of each other. In a intra cluster, a node senses and transmits data at a time on the round-robin basis. In a view of whole network, intra cluster is treated as one node. During the setup phase of a round, intra clusters are formed first and then they are re-clustered(network cluster) by choosing cluster-heads(intra clusters). In the intra cluster with a cluster-head, every member node plays the role of cluster-head on the round-robin basis. Hence, we can lengthen periodic round by a factor of intra cluster size. Also, in the steady-state phase, a node in each intra cluster senses and transmits data to its cluster-head of network cluster on the round-robin basis. As a result of analysis and comparison, our scheme reduces energy consumption of nodes, and improve the efficiency of communications in sensor networks compared with current clustering methods.
