The orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems are well suited to multi-rate multicast transmission, as they allow flexible resource allocation across both frequency and time, and provide adaptive modulation and coding schemes. Unlike layered video coding, the multiple description coding (MDC) enables flexible decomposition of the raw video stream into two or more substreams. The quality of the video stream is expected to be roughly proportional to data rate sustained by the receiver. This paper describes a mathematical model of resource allocation and throughput in the multi-rate video multicast for the OFDMA wireless and mobile networks. The impact on mean opinion score (MOS), as a measurement of user-perceived quality (by employing a variety of scheduling disciplines) is discussed in terms of utility maximization and proportional fairness. We propose a pruning algorithm to ensure a minimum video quality even for a subset of users at the resource limitation, and show the optimal number of substreams and their rates can sustain.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive scalable encryption scheme for the layered architecture of SVC video. The proposed method determines an appropriate set of encryption algorithms to be applied for the layers of SVC by considering the importance and priority relationship among the SVC video layers. Unlike the conventional encryption method based on a fixed encryption algorithm for the whole video layers, the proposed method applies differentiated encryption algorithms with different encryption strength the importance of the video layers. Thereupon, higher security could be maintained for the lower video layer including more important data, while lower encryption strength could be applied for the higher video layer with relatively less important data. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive scalable encryption method is proved by extensive simulations.
The multi-view video is a collection of multiple videos capturing the same scene at different viewpoints. The multi-view video can be used in various applications, including free viewpoint TV and three-dimensional TV. Since the data size of the multi-view video linearly increases as the number of cameras, it is necessary to compress multi-view video data for efficient storage and transmission. The multi-view video can be coded using the concept of the layered depth image (LDI). In this paper, we describe a procedure to generate LDI from the natural multi-view video and present a method to encode multi-view video using the concept of LDI.

In this paper, we propose a scalable coding method for high dynamic range (HDR) and standard dynamic range (SDR) videos based on Scalable High Efficiency Video Coding (SHVC). The proposed method has multi-layer coding architecture that consists of base layer for SDR videos and enhancement layer for HDR videos to support the backward compatibility with legacy codec and display devices. Also, to improve coding efficiency of enhancement layers, a global inverse tone mapping is applied to the reconstructed SDR video and the compensated frames are referred for coding of the enhancement layer. The proposed method is found to achieve BD-Rate gain of 43.0% on average (maximum 76.3%) for the enhancement layer and 15.7% on average (maximum 31%) for dual-layer against the SHM 7.0 reference software.
In this paper, a method for transmitting layered SVC streams in differentiated MBSFN channels is presented. Scalable coded video streams are transmitted in modulation channels of different efficiency that it achieves reduced resource consumption compared to non-scalable AVC stream. When utilizing with Raptor FEC, the combined effect is enhanced service coverage with providing minimum video quality at the edge of the service area, than the case of AVC.

Over recent years, the development of multimedia devices has meant that a wider multimedia streaming service can be supported, and there are now many ways in which TV channels can communicate with different terminals. Generally, scalable video streaming is known to provide more efficient channel capacity than simulcast video streaming. Simulcast video streaming requires a large network bandwidth for all resolutions, but scalable video streaming needs only one flow for all resolutions. On the contrary, to preserve the same video quality, SVC(Sealable Video Coding) needs a higher bit-rate than AVC(non-layered Video Coding) due to the coding penalty($10%{\sim}30%$). In previous research, scalable video streaming has been compared with simulcast video streaming for network channel capacity, in two-user simulation environments. The simulation results show that the channel capacity of SVC is $16{\sim}20%$ smaller than AVC, but scalable video streaming is not efficient because of the limit of the present network framework. In this paper, we propose a new network framework with a new router using EDE(Extraction Decision Engine) and SVC Extractor to improve network performance. In addition, we compare the SVC environment in the proposed framework with previous research on the same way subject. The proposed network framework shows a channel capacity 50%(maximum) lower than that found in previous research studies.

This paper presents H.264 coding schemes for multi-view video using the concept of layered depth image(LDI) representation and efficient compression technique for LDI. After converting those data to the proposed representation, we encode color, depth, and auxiliary data representing the hierarchical structure, respectively, Two kinds of preprocessing approaches are proposed for multiple color and depth components. In order to compress auxiliary data, we have employed a near lossless coding method. Finally, we have reconstructed the original viewpoints successfully from the decoded approach that is useful for dealing with multiple color and depth data simultaneously.

In the typical data partitioning for error-resilient video coding, motion and macroblock header information is separated from the texture information. It can be an effective tool for the transmission of video over the error prone environment. For Intra-coded frames, however, the loss of DCT (discrete cosine transform) coefficients is fatal because there is no ther information to reconstruct the corrupted macroblocks by errors. For Inter-coded frames, when error occurs in DCT coefficients, the picture quality is degraded because all DCT coefficients are discarded in those packets. In this paper, we propose an efficient data partitioning and coding method for DCT-based error-resilient video. The quantized DCT coefficients are partitioned into the even-value approximation and the remainder parts. It is shown that the proposed algorithm provides a better quality of the high priority part than the conventional methods.

Layered video coding schemes allow the video information to be transmitted in multiple video bitstreams to achieve scalability. they are attractive in theory for two reasons. First, they naturally allow for heterogeneity in networks and receivers in terms of client processing capability and network bandwidth. Second, they correspond to optimal utilization of available bandwidth when several video qualify levels are desired. In this paper we propose a scalable video codec architectures with motion estimation, which is suitable for real-time audio and video communication over packet networks. The coding algorithm is compatible with ITU-T recommendation H.263+ and includes various techniques to reduce complexity. Fast motion estimation is Performed at the H.263-compatible base layer and used at higher layers, and perceptual macroblock skipping is performed at all layers before motion estimation. Error propagation from packet loss is avoided by Periodically rebuilding a valid Predictor in Intra mode at each layer.
