  • In this paper, we propose an organ segmentation technique for the automatic extraction of medical diagnostic indicators from X-ray images. In order to calculate diagnostic indicators of heart disease and spinal disease such as VHS(vertebral heart scale) and Cobb angle, it is necessary to accurately segment the thoracic spine, carina, and heart in a chest X-ray image. A deep neural network model in which the high-resolution representation of the image for each layer and the structure converted into a low-resolution feature map are connected in parallel was adopted. This structure enables the relative position information in the image to be effectively reflected in the segmentation process. It is shown that learning performance can be improved by combining the OCR module, in which pixel information and object information are mutually interacted in a multi-step process, and the channel attention module, which allows each channel of the network to be reflected as different weight values. In addition, a method of augmenting learning data is presented in order to provide robust performance against changes in the position, shape, and size of the subject in the X-ray image. The effectiveness of the proposed theory was evaluated through an experiment using 145 human chest X-ray images and 118 animal X-ray images.

  • The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria is the outermost layer of cellular environment in which numerous biophysical and biochemical processes are in action sustaining viability. Advances in cell engineering enable modification of bacterial genetic information that subsequently alters membrane physiology to adapt bacteria to specific purposes. Surface display of a functional molecule on the outer membranes is one of strategies that directs host cells to respond to a specific extracellular matter or stimulus. While intracellular expression of a functional peptide or protein fused to a membrane-anchoring motif is commonly practiced for surface display, the method is not readily applicable to exogenous or large proteins inexpressible in bacteria. Chemical conjugation at reactive groups naturally occurring on the membrane might be an alternative, but often compromises fitness due to non-specific modification of essential components. Herein, we demonstrated two distinct approaches that enable site-specific decoration of the outer membrane with a fluorescent agent in Escherichia coli. An unnatural amino acid genetically incorporated in a surface-exposed peptide could act as a chemoselective handle for bioorthogonal dye labeling. A surface-displayed α-helical domain originating from a part of a selected heterodimeric coiled-coil complex could recruit and anchor a green fluorescent protein tagged with a complementary α-helical domain to the membrane surface in a site- and hetero-specific manner. These methods hold a promise as on-demand tools to confer new functionalities on the bacterial membranes.

  • The deterioration of underground facilities, disturbance of the ground due to underground development activities, and changes in ground water can cause ground subsidence accidents in the urban areas. The investigation on the geotechnical and hydraulic factors affecting the ground subsidence accident is very significant to predict the ground subsidence risk in advance. In this study, an analysis DB was constructed through 3D ground modeling to utilize the currently operating geotechnical survey information DB and ground water behavior information for risk prediction. Additionally, using these results, the relationship between the actual ground subsidence occurrence history and ground conditions and ground water level changes was confirmed. Furthermore, the methodology used to visualize the risk of ground subsidence was presented by reconstructing the engineering characteristics of the soil presented according to the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) in the existing geotechnical survey information into the internal erosion sensitivity of the soil, Based on the result, it was confirmed that the ground in the area where the ground subsidence occurred consists of more than 40% of sand (SM, SC, SP, SW) vulnerable to internal erosion. In addition, the effect of the occurrence frequency of ground subsidence due to the change in ground water level is also confirmed.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects of Samul-tang-ga-dansam water extract (SD) in wound-induced mice. Methods The mice were divided into five groups (n=7): the normal group, the control group, the positive control group, the low-dose SD group and the high-dose SD group. The normal group had no wounds and the other groups were wounded on the back with a leather punch. Distilled water was administered to the control group, 200 mg/kg of vitamin E was administered to the positive control group. In the low-dose SD group and the high-dose SD group, 1.23 g/kg and 2.47 g/kg of SD were administered, respectively. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protein levels were evaluated using western blot analysis. Skin tissue was analyzed by H&E, Masson's trichrome staining method. Results Oral administration of the SD significantly reduced the visible skin damage and decreased the reactive oxygen species and ONOO- activity of the serum. It significantly increased heme oxygenase-1, superoxide dismutase, catalase, GPx-1/2, Nrf2 and Keap-1 which are antioxidant-related factors in skin tissue and reduced NF-κB p65, inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 which are inflammation-related factors. Also, SD significantly decreased NOX2, p22phox and p47phox and increased α-smooth muscle actin and COL1A1 protein expression in fibroblasts involved in connective tissue repair. According to histological examination, the thickened epithelial layer was thinned and collagen fibers were increased to accelerate wound healing. Conclusions It is suggested that Samul-tang-ga-dansam has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and promotes wound tissue repair.

  • In order to manufacture a semiconductor circuit, etching, cleaning, and deposition processes are repeated. During these processes, the inside of the processing chamber is exposed to corrosive plasma. Therefore, the coating of the inner wall of the semiconductor equipment with a plasma-resistant material has been attempted to minimize the etching of the coating and particle contaminant generation. In this study, we mixed AlF3 powder with the solid-state reacted yttrium oxyfluoride (YOF) in order to increase plasma-etching resistance of the plasma spray coated YOF layer. Effects of the mixing ratio of AlF3 with YOF powder on crystal structure, microstructure and chemical composition were investigated using XRD and FE-SEM. The plasma-etching ratios of the plasma-spray coated layers were calculated and correlation with AlF3 mixing ratio was analyzed.

  • In this study, silicon sludge generated in semiconductor manufacturing process is recycled and applied as materials for pigments and paints. In detail, metallic impurities are removed from silicon sludge to obtain plate-like silicon sludge powder (SW-sludge), which is then coated with titanium dioxide via sol-gel method (TCS-sludge). SW-sludge and TCS-sludge are dispersed in hydrophilic transparent varnish and sprayed onto glass substrates to observe the possibility for the application as materials for pigments and paints. Notably, the applicability of TCS-sludge-based paint is improved compared to SW-sludge-based paint after the titanium dioxide coating. Moreover, the color of TCS-sludge-based paint turns into white. Accordingly, it is confirmed that the applicability and hydrophilicity are improved by the presence of outer titanium dioxide layer. In this regard, it is expected that the recycled TCS-sludge may be a future material for the application as pigments and paints.

  • To investigate the stability of temporary retaining walls during excavation, it is essential to develop reverse analysis technologies capable of precisely evaluating the properties of the ground and a learning model that can assess stability by analyzing real-time data. In this study, we targeted excavation sites where the C.I.P method was applied. We developed a Deep Neural Network (DNN) model capable of evaluating the stability of the retaining wall, and estimated the physical properties of the ground being excavated using a Differential Evolution Algorithm. We performed reverse analysis on a model composed of a two-layer ground for the applicability analysis of the Differential Evolution Algorithm. The results from this analysis allowed us to predict the properties of the ground, such as the elastic modulus, cohesion, and internal friction angle, with an accuracy of 97%. We analyzed 30,000 cases to construct the training data for the DNN model. We proposed stability evaluation grades for each assessment factor, including anchor axial force, uneven subsidence, wall displacement, and structural stability of the wall, and trained the data based on these factors. The application analysis of the trained DNN model showed that the model could predict the stability of the retaining wall with an average accuracy of over 94%, considering factors such as the axial force of the anchor, uneven subsidence, displacement of the wall, and structural stability of the wall.

  • To determine malachite green and leuco-malachite green residues in sea food, a liquid chromatographic method has been optimized. The target compounds were extracted in the homogenized edible tissues with a mixture of McIlvaine buffer-acetonitrile and partitioned against dichloromethane. After concentrating the lower layer, the resulting residues were re-dissolved in methanol and analyzed by the HPLC with visible detector at 620 nm using acetonitrile-acetate buffer. For the analysis of leuco-malachite green with malachite green simultaneously, post-column packed with lead(IV) oxide was used for oxidizing leuco-malachite green to malachite green. The correlation coefficients($r^2$) was 0.9989 for malachite green, and 0.9995 for leuco-malachite green. The limit of detection was 0.005 mg/kg for the combined of malachite green and leuco-malachite green at signal/noise${\geq}3$. The recovery rate was within a reliable range of 84~98% (CV 3~16%). Leuco-malachite green were detected in carp and crusian carp.

  • In a previous study, a structure of a superplastic yoke consisting of a thin FR4 layer laminated with viscoelastic tape on both sides of a shape memory alloy (SMA) was proposed to reduce residual vibration generated by a deployable solar panel during high motion of a satellite. Damping properties of viscoelastic tapes will change with temperature, which can directly affect vibration reduction performance of the yoke. To check damping performance of the yoke at different temperatures, free damping tests were performed under various temperature conditions to identify the temperature range where the damping performance was maximized. Based on above temperature test results, this paper predicts temperature of the yoke through orbital thermal analysis so that the yoke can have effective damping performance even if it is exposed to an orbital thermal environment. In addition, the thermal design method was described so that the yoke could have optimal vibration reduction performance.
