  • A Digital X-ray imaging system using Compton backscattering has been developed to obtain a cross-sectional profile and mass loss of corroded lap-splices of aging aircraft from density variation. A slit-type camera was designed to focus on a small scattering volume inside the material, from which the backscattered photons are collected by a collimated scintillator detector for interpretation of material characteristics. The cross section of the lap-joint is scanned by moving the scattering volume through the thickness direction of the specimen. The mass loss of each layer has been estimated from a Compton backscatter A-scan to obtain the thickness of each layer including the aluminum sheet, the corrosion layer and the sealant. Quantitative information such as location and width of planar corrosion in the lap splices of fuselages is obtained by deconvolution using a nonlinear least-square error minimization method(BFGS method): A simple reconstruction model is also introduced to overcome distortion of the Compton backscatter data due to attenuation effects attributed to beam hardening and quantum noise.

  • For porous silicon layer to be used as active layer in various devices, it is necessary to be formed locally along with a designed pattern on the wafer. However, there is still no suitable masking layer to withstand against the high concentration of HF for a time of some minutes up to some hours during the anodic process effectively. In this work, we investigated the property of selectivity between p$^{+}$ and n layers to form localized porous silicon even without a mask by the difference of the anodic I-V characteristics on the doping level and doping type. The width of the pattern made in the sample was 2mm, and the formed porous silicon layer was observed by SEM to see the morphology on the cross section below the surface. As the results, it was found that the selectivity was reasonable for the pattern size over 100.mu.m.m.

  • In chromium electrodeposition, crack is inevitably accompanied by chromium layer. Behavior of crack formation and crack density were different from the plating conditions such as current density, temperature, waveform of applied current and so on. And cracks have an influence on the corrosion resistance of chromium deposit, because corrosion occurs through the network of cracks between deposit and substrate. Therefore, many researches have been achieved in order to remove the cracks in chromium deposit. Formation of double layers, Cr/Cr and Ni/Cr were investigated to increase corrosion resistance of chromium deposit in this study. As pretreatment prior to outer chromium coating, acid pickling and current control method were examined. Cracks in cross-section of each sample were observed with SEM and CASS(Copper modified acetic acid salt spray) test was performed to evaluate corrosion resistance. It was found that corrosion resistance of Cr/Cr and Ni/Cr double layers were superior to Cr or Ni single layer from the results of CASS test.

  • Thermal energy storage(TES) cooling system using cheaper electricity of off-peak time has been applied to relieve a significant portion of the peak demand of electricity during the daytime in summer. Slurry ice type thermal energy storage cooling system is one kind of more efficient ice-thermal energy storage cooling system than Ice-on-Coil type or Encapsulated type TES cooling system, even though, which are more popular TES system. This experimental study was carried out to observe flow pattern and formation of slurry ice in reversing flow layer to improve efficiency of heat transfer between fluid and freezing tube and to disturb ice adhesion on tube surface. The reversing flow layer was made by using reversing materials in heat exchanger section(test section) to disturb ice adhesion. At this experiment, styrofoam balls and poly propylene balls were used as reversing materials, and a 20wt% solution of ethylene glycol was used as reversing flow layer. The experimental apparatus was constructed of the test section for making/storing slurry ice, the brine tank, pumps for circulating of a 20wt% solution of ethylene glycol and brine, a flow-meter, a data logger for measuring the temperature. The experiments were carried out under various conditions, with volumetric flow rate, ball filling rate and air filling rate.

  • The frost penetration depth of pavement is usually estimated from the freezing index that made temperature data analysis of 30 years and decided the thickness of anti-frost layer. The field monitoring region in study was divided into five regions by freezing index 550~650$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day, 450~550$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day and 350~450$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day. Each region has three-section of road pavement such as cutting area, boundary area of cutting and banking, and lower area of banking. The field monitoring system was established both in the section of anti-frost layer and in the section without anti-frost layer. The data analysis was conducted for determination of frost penetration depth within the paved road by the field monitoring system. The result showed that The temperature of subgrade without anti-frost layer shows below zero in centigrade for the region of freezing index 550~650$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day, up and down around zero degree in subgrade for the region of freezing index 450~550$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day, and there is no place existed below zero degree in subgrade for the region of freezing index below 450$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$day. With comparison of field frost penetration depth for the cross-sections of pavement, the cutting area shows the greatest frost penetration depth, and less influence of frost penetration depth for the boundary area of cutting and banking, and the least influenced for the lower area of banking.

  • As part of further study on Gwangseungri coastal deposits which occurred at 10 ~ 15m above sea level and was analyzed as palaeo-coastal flood-type sediments, six burial ages of six additional samples from the two cross sections (KST1 and, KST2) near to the points of the past study were estimated and the geochemical analysis was performed. Further investigation on the cross section KST1 revealed a reversal of the burial age at the bottom of the section which was identified as palaeo-flooding sediments and supposed to have been buried about 350 years ago. At the lower part of the KST1, the burial age of the sediment layer was estimated to be 3,800 years. The lower part of KST2 sediments was identified as sediments that was formed about 6,600 years ago and about 20,000 years ago. Considering the inclination of the sediment layers, the coastal flooding sedimentsreported to have formed 700 years ago in the previousstudy are located at the top and the KST1 section analyzed in thisstudy seemed to be connected to the lower part. The chemical analysis showed that the relationship between these layers was not continuous but had a discontinuous characteristic influenced by a specific event, and the chemical composition also showed a rapid change. If we judge these together, the lowest part of Gwangseungrisediment layerseemed to have formed during the last glacial period but it was hard to find its origins clearly. On top of this layer, a fine sediment layer containing gravels was also formed.Itseemed thatsedimentation did not occur continuously, but was affected by temporary events in such a way that after a sediment layer was formed, it stopped. Since then, a coastal flooding event occurred about 700 years ago, and part of flooded sediments accumulated in the rear slope. After that, when a flood layer including additional granular materials about 350 years ago was formed, sedimentation along the slope seemed to have occurred.

  • It is still inadequate for investigating the highly nonlinear and complex mechanical behaviors of single-layer latticed domes by only performing a force-based demand-capacity analysis. The energy-based balance method has been largely accepted for assessing the seismic performance of a structure in recent years. The various factors, such as span-to-rise ratio, joint rigidity and damping model, have a remarkable effect on the load-carrying capacity of a single-layer latticed dome. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the maximum load-carrying capacity of a dome under extreme loading conditions. In this paper, a mechanical model for members of the semi-rigidly jointed single-layer latticed domes, which combines fiber section model with semi-rigid connections, is proposed. The static load-carrying capacity and seismic performance on the single-layer latticed domes are evaluated by means of the mechanical model. In these analyses, different geometric parameters, joint rigidities and roof loads are discussed. The buckling behaviors of members and damage distribution of the structure are presented in detail. The sensitivity of dynamic demand parameters of the structures subjected to strong earthquakes to the damping is analyzed. The results are helpful to have a better understanding of the seismic performance of the single-layer latticed domes.

  • The surface-reacted layer of titanium castings greatly affects their mechanical properties. This study analyzed the interfacial zone of Ti-20%Zr-5%Cr alloy castings obtained from phosphate bonded investment and examined the relationship between the surface-reacted layer and hardness. The Vickers hardness of cast disks were tested at 20$\mu m$ intervals from the surface to 120$\mu m$ in depth. The cross-section was observed metallurgically, and line profile of the reacted layer was conducted under the EDX. The surface-reacted layer of Ti-20%Zr-5%Cr alloy is showed a similar tendency to Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy in thickness, and also Si diffusion in multiple reacted layer of Ti-20%Zr-5%Cr alloy is less than cp Ti and similar to Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy. The Vickers hardness in the surface layer was greater than in the inner part, and the Vickers hardness of Ti-20%Zr-5%Cr alloy ranged 650 to 390 and cp Ti ranged 810 to 160, Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy ranged 710 to 530 respectively.

  • The ductility of circular hollow reinforced concrete columns with one layer of longitudinal and spiral reinforcement placed near the outside face of the section and the steel tube placed on the inside face of the section is investigated. Such hollow sections are confined through the wall thickness since the steel tube is placed. The results of analytical moment-curvature analyses for such hollow sections are compared with those for the circular section with the sane diameter. In this study, moment-curvature analyses are conducted with Mandel's confined concrete stress-strain relationship in which the effect of confinement is to increase the compression strength and ultimate strain of concrete. The moment-curvature analyses confirmed that the ductility is primarily influenced on the ultimate strain. The variables influenced on the ultimate strain is the ratio and yield strength of confining reinforcement and the compression strength for confined concrete. From this ultimate strain - the transverse reinforcement ratio relationship, the transverse reinforcement ratio for circular hollow reinforced columns with confinement is proposed. The proposed transverse reinforcement ratio is confirmed by experimental results.

  • The standard radiation protection method in the angiography suite involves the use of a thyroid shield, a lead apron, and lead glasses. However, exposure to substantial amounts of ionizing radiation can cause cataracts, tumors, and skin erythema. A newly developed curtain-type radiation protection device consists of a curtain drape composed of a five-layer bismuth and lead acrylic head-shielding plate, with both bearing an equivalent 0.25 mm lead thickness. In this study, a quality assurance phantom was used as the patient to create radiation scatter from the radiographic source, and an anthropomorphic mannequin phantom was used as the interventionalist to measure the radiation dose at seven different anatomical locations. Thermoluminescent dosimeters were used to measure the radiation dose. The experimental groups consisted of all-sided or one-sided curtain set-ups, the presence or absence of a conventional shielding system, and the orientation of beam irradiation. Consequently, the curtain-type radiation protection device exhibited better radiation protection range and capabilities than conventional radiation protection systems, especially in safeguarding the forehead, eyes, arms, and feet, with minimal radiation exposure. Moreover, the mean shielding ratios of the conventional shielding system and curtain-type radiation protection device were measured at 51.94% and 93.86%, respectively. Additionally, no significant decrease in the radiation protection range or capability was observed, even with changes in the beam orientation or one-sided protection. Compared with a conventional shielding system, the curtain-type radiation protection device decreased radiation exposure doses and improved comfort. Therefore, it is a potential new radiation protection device for veterinary interventional procedures.
