Myrrh, Angelicae Radix, and Schisandrae Fructus have been used to treat diverse diseases including neurological disorder in the traditional Korean medicine. In the present study, we investigated the ameliorating effects of HPM-1, a combined extract of Myrrh, Angelicae Radix and Schisandrae Fructus, on scopolamine-induced memory impairments in mice. First, we assessed HPM-1, HPM-2 and HPM-3, in which Myrrh was extracted with water, 30% ethanol, and 30% ethanol/3% vinegar, respectively. The oral administration of HPM-1, HPM-2, or HPM-3 significantly reversed scopolamine-induced reduction of spontaneous alternation in the Y-maze task. In the passive avoidance task, HPM-1 or HPM-3 restored the decreased latency time of the retention trial by scopolamine treatment, but in terms of efficacy, HPM-1 showed more beneficial effects than HPM-3. In addition, HPM-1 administration reversed scopolamine-induced reduction of spontaneous alternation in the Y-maze task and scopolamine-decreased latency time in the passive avoidance in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that HPM-1 has the therapeutic potential in memory impairments.

To provide a guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) to real-time traffic in High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) core network, we proposed an enhanced mechanism. For an enhanced QoS, a Class-Based Low Latency Fair Queueing (CBLLFQ) packet scheduling algorithm is introduced in this work. Packet classification, metering, queuing, and scheduling using differentiated services (DiffServ) environment was the points in focus. To classify different types of real-time voice and multimedia traffic, the QoS provisioning mechanisms use different DiffServ code points (DSCP).The proposed algorithm is based on traffic classes which efficiently require the guarantee of services and specified level of fairness. In CBLLFQ, a mapping criterion and an efficient queuing mechanism for voice, video and other traffic in separate queues are used. It is proved, that the algorithm enhances the throughput and fairness along with a reduction in the delay and packet loss factors for smooth and worst traffic conditions. The results calculated through simulation show that the proposed calculations meet the QoS prerequisites efficiently.
It is well known that stress induces analgesia. This study was designed to demonstrate the stress-induced analgesia by employing hemorrhage and restraint and to investigate its mechanism and sex difference. The degree of pain was assessed by measuring the magnitude of jaw opening reflex produced by a noxious electrical stimulation in the dental pulp and by measuring the latency to withdraw the tail from a heat ray. Restraint showed an antinociceptive response. A significant increase in pain threshold on bleeding was shown and the increase was larger in male group than in female group. The tail flick latency (TFL) on bleeding after AVP antagonist injection into the ventricle was decreased and the decrease was greater in male rats than in female rats. Castration resulted in a significant reduction of TFL. This effect was reversed by treatment with sex hormones. TFL was decreased during hemorrhage in castrated rats. This response was opposite to that in non-castrated rats. TFL was further decreased during hemorrhage after infusion of AVP antagonist, and there was a significant sex difference. These results suggest that both restraint and hemorrhage produce an antinociception and that, in hemorrhage-induced analgesia, AVP and sex hormones may play an important role and male rats show a greater analgesic response.

Many reports demonstrate that extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF MFs, 60 Hz) may be involved in hyperalgesia. In a previous investigation, we suggested that MFs may produce hyperalgesia and such a response may be regulated by the benzodiazepine system. In order to further confirm this effect of MFs, we used diazepam and/or flumazenil with MFs exposure. When testing the pain threshold of rats using hot plate tests, MFs or diazepam ($0.5\;{\mu}g$, i.c.v.; a benzodiazepine receptor agonist) induced hyperalgesic effects with the reduction of latency. These effects were blocked by a pretreatment of flumazenil (1.5 mg/kg, i.p.; a benzodiazepine receptor antagonist). When the rats were exposed simultaneously to MFs and diazepam, the latency tended to decrease without statistical significance. The induction of hyperalgesia by co-exposure to MFs and diazepam was also blocked by flumazenil. However, the pretreatment of GABA receptor antagonists such as bicuculline ($0.1\;{\mu}g$, i.c.v.; a $GABA_A$ antagonist) or phaclofen ($10\;{\mu}g$, i.c.v.; a $GABA_B$ antagonist) did not antagonize the hyperalgesic effect of MFs. These results suggest that the benzodiazepine system may be involved in MFs-induced hyperalgesia.

This paper describes a high-radix crossbar switch design with low latency and power dissipation for Network-on-Chip (NoC) applications. The reduction in latency and power is achieved by employing a folded-clos topology, implementing the switch organized as three stages of low-radix switches connected in cascade. In addition, to facilitate the uniform placement of wires among the sub-switch stages, this paper proposes a Mux-Matrix-Mux structure, which implements the first and third switch stages as multiplexer-based crossbars and the second stage as a matrix-type crossbar. The proposed 256-radix, 8-bit crossbar switch designed in a 65nm CMOS has the simulated power dissipation of 1.92-W and worst-case propagation delay of 0.991-ns while operating at 1.2-V supply and 500-MHz frequency. Compared with the state-of-the-art designs in literature, the proposed crossbar switch achieves the best energy-delay-area efficiency of $0.73-fJ/cycle{\cdot}ns{\cdot}{\lambda}^2$.

Recently, many research works are focusing on DVC (Distributed Video Coding) system for low complexity encoder. However the feedback channel-based parity bit control is a major cause of the high decoding time latency. Spatial and temporal correlation is high in video and, therefore, the statistical property can be applied for the parity bit request of LDPCA frame. By introducing frame adaptive parity bit request estimation method, this paper proposes a new method for reducing the decoding time latency. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed method achieves about 80% of complexity reduction, compared to the conventional no-estimation method.

In this paper, we considered the performances of PMIPv6 and DMM in the viewpoints of traffic load change and packet delivery latency time, where a new buffering in the previous MAAR is proposed to reduce packet loss during handover. To show the superiority of the DMM and to validate the operation of the buffering scheme, we accomplished its simulation under the typical handover. Our performance comparison results show that the DMM is better than the performance of traffic load change and packet delivery latency time of PMIPv6. We can see that the proposed buffering scheme is better than the existing one in terms of packet loss.

NAND flash memory-based SSD needs an internal software, Flash Translation Layer(FTL) to provide traditional block device interface to the host because of its physical constraints, such as erase-before-write and large erase block. However, because useful host-side information cannot be delivered to FTL through the narrow block device interface, SSDs suffer from a variety of problems such as increasing garbage collection overhead, large tail-latency, and unpredictable I/O latency. Otherwise, the new type of SSD, open-channel SSD exposes the internal structure of SSD to the host so that underlying NAND flash memory can be managed directly by the host-level FTL. Especially, I/O data classification by using host-side information can achieve the reduction of garbage collection overhead. In this paper, we propose a new scheme to reduce garbage collection overhead of open-channel SSD by separating the journal from other file data for the journaling filesystem. Because journal has different lifespan with other file data, the Write Amplification Factor (WAF) caused by garbage collection can be reduced. The proposed scheme is implemented by modifying the host-level FTL of Linux and evaluated with both Fio and Filebench. According to the experiment results, the proposed scheme improves I/O performance by 46%~50% while reducing the WAF of open-channel SSDs by more than 33% compared to the previous one.
This study focuses on the concept of multi-scale wireless sensor networks for damage detection in civil infrastructure systems by first over viewing the general network philosophy and attributes in the areas of data acquisition, data reduction, assessment and decision making. The data acquisition aspect includes a scalable wireless sensor network acquiring acceleration and strain data, triggered using a Restricted Input Network Activation scheme (RINAS) that extends network lifetime and reduces the size of the requisite undamaged reference pool. Major emphasis is given in this study to data reduction and assessment aspects that enable a decentralized approach operating within the hardware and power constraints of wireless sensor networks to avoid issues associated with packet loss, synchronization and latency. After over viewing various models for data reduction, the concept of a data-driven Bivariate Regressive Adaptive INdex (BRAIN) for damage detection is presented. Subsequent examples using experimental and simulated data verify two major hypotheses related to the BRAIN concept: (i) data-driven damage metrics are more robust and reliable than their counterparts and (ii) the use of heterogeneous sensing enhances overall detection capability of such data-driven damage metrics.

The difference between definition time of GPS (Global Positioning System) position data and actual display time of car positions on a map could reduce the accuracy of car positions displayed in PND (Portable Navigation Device)-type CNS (Car Navigation System). Due to the time difference, the position of the car displayed on the map is not its current position, so an improved method to fix these problems is required. It is expected that a method that uses predicted future positionsto compensate for the delay caused by processing and display of the received GPS signals could mitigate these problems. Therefore, in this study an analysis was conducted to correct late processing problems of map positions by mapmatching using a Kalman filter with only GPS position data and a RRF (Road Reduction Filter) technique in a light-weight CNS. The effects on routing services are examined by analyzing differences that are decomposed into along and across the road elements relative to the direction of advancing car. The results indicate that it is possible to improve the positional accuracy in the along-the-road direction of a light-weight CNS device that uses only GPS position data, by applying a Kalman filter and RRF.
