  • The characteristics of the basic statistics and steadiness of wind and the monthly normality test of surface wind distribution are investigated by using the observed wind data compiled from 10m meteorological observation tower at Seocheon district, where is located In the western coastal region of Korea. during the period from Feb. 7, 1996 to Feb. 7 1997 The northerly is appeared to be even in August and Sepember due to the influences of loccal circulation such as land and sea breeze. The correlation coefacients between two wind components are seemed to be positive during the in the period of from June to September and negative from October to April, respectively The constancy of wand Is high In shifts to lower values Increasing sampling time. It is found from monthly normality test based on the skewness and the excess of kurtosis coefficients that the distribution of zonal wind component is normal In spring and meridional one Is normal in late summer and early autumn.

  • The hormonal requirement suiting micropropagation of Morus alba during any season throughout the year was studied. Sprouting frequency from axillary buds of M. alba was greatly influenced by the time of explant collection, the highest value was achieved when nodal explants were collected at the end of bud dormancy period (late in March) and cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with low concentration (0.5 mg/L) of BAP, kinetin or IBA (85-68%). In addition, they showed higher axillary bud sprouting on growth-regulators-free medium (49%) than others collected in autumn or winter and cultured on medium supplemented with various growth regulators (47-48%). Regardless of that period, young explants with greenish buds collected in summer exhibiting high sprouting frequency (66%) on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L kinetin and 0.5 mg/L GA3. Shoot multiplication via adventitious bud formation was achieved when the nodal explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 2 mg/L BAP and 0.2 mg/L IBA. Further multiplication via nodal explants of in vitro grown shoots was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mglL BAP and 0.5 mg/L GA3. While half strength MS medium supplemented with low concentration (0.5 mg/L) of IBA, IAA or 2,4-D stimulated adventitious root formation, IBA was the best. After transfer the plantlets to the soil, acclimatization for three weeks was essential prerequisite for survival in high frequency (92%). Peroxidase activity is related to break of bud dormancy where maximum enzyme activity was detected when the lateral buds were induced to commence growth under field condition (early in spring) or in vitro.

  • From September 1994 to April 1996, we observed the suspending time dependant meat increase (dry weight) for oysters at Pukman Bay in Korea. The oysters which suspended in September increased to 5 g in meat weight (dry weight) by January. Ones in June increased rapidly but lessened during summer and this stagnation of meat increase extended to autumn. It took long time to compensate for the loss of meat weight owing to spawning. Oysters suspended in July or August showed low growth or stagnation due to the high water temperature and spawning activities after suspending. However, meat weight showed sudden increasement after December and achieved 5 g at the late farm period. The meat increase of oysters suspended in October or November was very slow during entire growing period. Most of them did not achieved 5 g during farm period. The negative correlation was observed between meat growth and water temperature in September. Also, there was a high correlation between meat growth and chlorophyll-a. It was believed that deficiency of food organisms in the water column lead slow growth in terms of meat growth, particularly right after transplanting seed oysters to the farm. Our study suggests that proper time for transplanting oysters is between August and mid-September. However, the data indicate that good growth of oysters is depending upon amount of food available in the water column.

  • Crimson clover, a legume crop, is a landscape crop and green manure crop that can be sowing in spring and autumn. Its red flower blooms in May, and serves various roles such as landscape composition, weeds suppressing, prevention of soil loss and nutrient on sloping land and supplying nitrogen and organic matter in soil. Thus, in order to utilize this crop in agriculture land, we evaluated the growth characteristics of crimson clover cultivated in four different soil textures, sand, sandy loam, loam, and clay loam. The nitrogen content of crimson clover was 15.8 g kg-1 and C/N rate was 20.3. Its growth was good in sandy loam and loam. Its plant height was 42.5 cm in sandy loam and 49.5 cm in loamy, respectively, which are approximately 20 cm longer than the sand and clay loam. The crimson clover in sandy loam and loam bloomed about seven days earlier than those in sand and clay loam. Regarding number of flower per hill and flower length, there were no difference between soil textures. Dry weight of crimson clover was 2.5 Mg ha-1, 2.3 Mg ha-1 each in sandy loam and loam. Therefore, it was approximately 0.8 ~ 1.1 Mg ha-1 higher than dry weight of sand and sandy loam. Plant height and dry weight of crimson clover was increased late harvest time. Nitrogen contribution were higher in loam and clay loam, when it was respectively 51.3 kg ha-1, 53.5 kg ha-1. Therefore, according to flowering properties and dry weight, the growth and development of crimson clover was finest in sandy loam and loam.

  • Seasonal distribution of zooplankton community in Inchon Dock, an artificially closed marine embayment has been studied. Samples were collected monthly during the period from December 1989 to December 1991 at four stations in the dock and compared with that at a single station in neighbouring waters of the Yellow Sea. Copepods dominated both in and outside of the dock all the year round, except in late autumn and early winter when protozoans outnumbered. dominant species were Oithona davisae, Acartia bifilosa, Paracalanus crassirostris, Noctiluca scintillas and Tintinnopsis tubulosa. A sharp decline in the abundance was observed in summer 1990 in the dock apparently due to oxygen deficiency (anoxic condition). Although no distinct deference in the abundance of zooplankton was observed between populations in and outside of the dock except in summer 1990, waters out of the dock showed to have a prosperity in species number throughout the year. Moreover, four species of copepods, Centropages abdominalis, Pseudodiaptomus marinus, Tortanus forcipatus and T. spinicaudatus occurred solely at the outside of the dock.

  • In an effort to investigate the structure and variability of the coastal current in the East Sea, a moored ADCP observation was conducted off Uljin from late May to mid-October 2006. Owing to the transition of season from summer to autumn, the features of the current and wind can be divided into two parts. Until mid-August (Part-I), a southward flow is dominant at all depths with a mean alongshore velocity of 4.2~8.9 cm/s but northward winds are not strong enough to reverse the near-surface current. During Part-II, a strong northward current occurs frequently in the upper layer but winds are predominantly southward including two typhoons that have deep-reaching influence. Profile of mean velocity has three layers with a northward velocity embedded at 12~28 m depth. The near-surface current of Part-II significantly coheres with winds at 4-8 day periods with a phase lag of about 12 hours. The modal structure of the current obtained by EOF analysis is: (1) Mode-1, having 83.6% of total variance, represents the current in the same direction at all depths corresponding to the southward North Korean Cold Current (NKCC). (2) Mode-2 (11.7%) reveals a two-layer structure that can be explained by the northward East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) in the upper layer and NKCC in the lower. (3) Mode-3 (2.6%) has three layers, in which the EKWC is reversed near the surface by opposing winds. This mode is particularly similar to the mean velocity profile of Part-II.

  • This study investigated the spatial characteristics of warming trends and the dipole-like pattern of temperature field in the Antarctic Peninsula using surface air temperature (SAT) of 10 stations in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula. SAT data for the 1962-2001 period at 6 stations (Rothera, Faraday/Vernadsky, Bellingshausen, Orcadas, Esperanza, Halley) revealed in general the larger warming trends in autumn and winter except for Halley. The largest warming was shown for August in the west side of the Peninsula (more than $0.9^{\circ}C/decade$). On the other hand, the recent 14-year SAT data showed the strong warming trends at 9 stations except for Halley in the earlier period (April-June) than August for the 1962-2001 period. The largest warming appeared in May at Esperanza and Butler Island. SAT of the two sides showed significant positive correlations over most of the period except for the mid- and the late 1970s, in which significant negative correlations were found. In the correlation analysis between SAT and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the NINO 3.4 region, strong negative correlation was found in the west side of the Peninsula. Details of the correlation analysis exhibited that the negative correlation was significantly strong from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s. However, it was difficult to find significant correlations of ENSO with SAT in the east side of the Peninsula. So, in this study it failed to find out clearly the out-of-phase relationship of SAT across the Antarctic Peninsula.

  • The Nakdong River, which lies in a monsoon climate zone with warm rainy summers and cold dry winters, is a typical ecosystem showing the attributes of a regulated river. In 2003, the total annual rainfall (1,805 mm) was higher than the average of the past nine years from 1994 to 2002 (1,250 mm). In September a powerful typhoon, Maemi, caused a big impact on the limnology of the river for over two months. Among the limnological variables, turbidity in 2003 (37.4 ${\pm}$ 94.1 NTU, n = 54) was higher than the annual average for ten years (18.5 ${\pm}$ 2.3 NTU, n = 486) in the lower part of the river (Mulgum: RK 28). Furthermore, physical disturbance (e.g. stream bank erosion within channel) in the upstream of the Imha Dam (RK ca. 350; river distance in kilometer from the estuary barrage) in the upper part of the river was a source of high turbidity, and impacted on the limnological dynamics along a 350 km section of the middle to lower part of the river. After the typhoon, high turbidity persisted more than two months in the late autumn from September to November in 2003. Flow regulation and the extended duration of turbid water are superimposed on the template of existing main channel hydroecology, which may cause spatial changes in the population dynamics of plankton in the river.

  • Seasonal variations of cyanobacterial toxins (microcystins) in Yeongehun reservoir were studied from March to December, 2007. High level of microcystins production was shown during the late autumn and winter seasons. Total microcystins concentration increased sharply when the dominant species changed from Anabaena sp. to Microcystis aeruginosa. Microcystins-RR and -YR were the main components of the microcystins, whereas microcystin-LR was detected in small quantities. Especially, large amounts of microcystin-LR were detected when standing crops of M. aeruginosa increased exponentially. Total microcystins concentration showed a negative correlation with water temperature. However, total microcystins were lowly correlated with other environmental factors except for water temperature. As a result, this study clearly demonstrated that M. aeruginosa was the main producer of microcystins in Yeongchun reservoir.

  • This field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of nitrogen(N) application time (March 30, April 9 and April 19) and N fertilizer kind (urea and ammonium sulfate) in early spring on the grass growth, dry matter (DM) yield, crude protein (CP) content, CP yield (CPY), acid detergent fiber (ADF) content, DM digestibility (DMD) and N recovery in orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) meadow for soiling, 1989. The amount of N applied in early spring was 70 kg $ha^{-1}$, and non-fertilized plot was involved as control. In all fertilized plots the growth, DM yield, CP, CPY and regrowth yield of grasses were significantly increased compared with control. The best grass growth and DM yield were observed on March 30, and the best CP, CPY and N recovery were observed on April 9 among all fertilized plots. Also there were not significant differences between urea and ammonium sulfate fertilizer in grass growth, DM yield, CP, CPY, ADF, DMD and N recovery. In Suwon area, therefore, the optimum time of N application for soiling in early spring may be recommended early April, regardless of fertilizer kind of N.
