This study includes the effects of shielding gas types and flow rate on Nd:YAG Laser weldability of sintered material. The types of shielding gas were evaluated for He, Ar and N2. Bending strength, porosity rate, hardness and aspect ratio testing of laser weld are carried out to evaluated the weldability. As a results, Ar gas was showed the best welding strength even it has the most porosity content on weld metal, and depend on increases the gas flow rate, it was not only got deeper penetration depth but also showed higher bending strength. Therefore we could know that bending strength is not only affect the porosity content but also melting area.

Magnesium alloys have gained increased attention in recent years as the structural materials, because of their attractive properties such as good specific strength, excellent sound damping capability. However, to expand their applications, a reliable joining process is absolutely necessary. In this study, a CW fiber laser was used to investigate the lap weldability of sand casting and wrought magnesium alloys. The effect of defocused distance on lap weldability was examined, and it was found that spatters always generated at the around focused distance because of the high power density of the laser beam. Thus, defocused distance was required to obtain sound welds. In addition, the application of fillet welding was evaluated for minimizing the affect of sand casting magnesium alloy that have relatively poor weldability. As a result of this study, we could confirm good weldability without weld defects.
During welding of Ni based superalloy, hot cracking was usually happen in the fusion zone of a weld. In this study, the laser weldability of Inconel 713C alloy for the turbocharger wastegate valve (WGV) was evaluated with various welding conditions, such as laser power, welding speed, shielding gas. Welding conditions were optimized by bead-on-plate (BOP) and butt joint welding. For the evaluation of laser weldability, bead shapes and weld microstructures were investigated and tensile test was conducted. The fracture surfaces were investigated for the understanding the cause of the fracture.
For the purpose of establishing laser welding condition (laser power, welding speed and beam focus) and of evaluating tailored blanks for two kinds of thin steel sheets SPCC and SK5M using in the thin plate structure such as automobile, train, and so on, investigated their $CO^2$ laser weldability under various initial welding conditions. SPCC thin sheet showed good weldability under some welding conditions. But, high carbon steel sheet SK5M needed heat treatment after welding to obtain ductility of the welded joint. And next, tailored blank was tested through deep drawing to evaluate reliability of their obtained laser welding conditions. The forming depths by tailored blank were SPCC+SPCC=22-25mm and SK5M+SK5M=13-25mm.
The weldability of dissimilar materials between sintered materials which are consisted of Co, Co+Ni and carbon steel has been investigated using CO$_2$ laser. Autogeneous CO$_2$ laser welding were run along the butt between two alloys using sets of parameters variation-power and travel speed. In order to study weldability, mechanical tests (bending strength test, microhardness test) and metallurgical analyses (microstructure, phase transformation, fracture mode) were carried out. From the results obtained, it was found that the porosity which exists in a weld metal greatly affects the soundness of the weld. The optimum energy input to have a proper strength over than the requirement by a specification, found to be around 0.3-0.35kJ/m. There are two kinds of fracture mode in the weld metal, depending upon alloy combination, brittle fracture in the case of Co-carbon steel and a ductile fracture in the case of Co+Ni-carbon steel. In general, Co+Ni sintered material showed a better weld properties as compared to the Co sintered material.
This paper describes the weldability of JIS S45C medium carbon steel (same material with KS SM45C and SAE 1045) for machine structural use by Nd:YAG laser. This material have a limitation to the industrial application in spite of good mechanical characteristics. This is due to its difficult welding work from high carbon contents. We therefore have investigated laser weldability of this material to extend the application of medium carbon steel. The results of this study provide application possibility of Nd:YAG laser welding for medium carbon steel.
Magnesium alloys are becoming important material for light weight car body, due to their low specific density but high specific strength. However they have a poor weldability, caused high oxidization tendency and low vapor temperature. In this study, the welding performance of magnesium alloys was investigated for automobile application. The materials were rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains Al and Zn such as AZ3l , AZ6l and AZ9l. Three types of welding process were studied, that were GTAW, Laser beam welding and FSW. To evaluate the weldability, we examined the appearance of welding bead. Also we checked bead shape and internal defects such as crack and porosity on cross section of welding bead. The mechanical property was measured for welded specimen by tensile test. For determination of the strength change by welding process, the hardness profile across the welding center was measured. For the results, the tensile properties of welded specimen were decreased obviously on all welding process. For the fusion welding process such as GTAW and laser beam welding, the surface of the welding bead was covered with oxidized magnesium dust but it was removed by simple cleaning work as wipe-out with tissue. Also under cut, that caused vaporization of base metal was occurred. for the friction stir welding, there was no oxidation, under-cut or internal defects. However it had poor weld performance, the reason was cleavage fracture occurred at plastic deformation zone. For welding of magnesium alloy, the laser beam welding process was recommended.

Optimization of process parameters for laser-arc hybrid welding process is intrinsically sophisticated because the process has three kinds of parameters-arc, laser and hybrid welding parameters. In this paper, the relationship between weldability and several process parameters such as laser beam-arc distance, electrode height, welding current and welding speed, were investigated by the full factorial experimental design. Weld quality was evaluated by using weight of spatters which is related with the pore area. It was found that the weld quality was increased with the increases in laser beam-arc distance and welding current, and decreased with the increases in electrode height and welding speed.

Aluminum and aluminum alloys have high rate of lightness, recycling property and excellent specific strength. Fields using them have been widening because they ould satisfy both energy reduction and high efficiency in manufactures production. But they have many problems on welding due to high thermal conductivity and reflectivity, so the study to solve these problems ate proceeding actively around the world. This study was purposed to improve weldability and spread application range for aluminium alloys by using the unique property of aluminium which absorb high energy around $800{\mu}m$ wavelength and the higher temperature, the mote absorbtion of laser beam on preheating by multi-wavelength laser beam(pulsed Nd:YAG laser + diode laser with $808{\mu}m$ wavelength). The favorable mechanical properties were acquired by the test results of strength, hardness and leak of weld metal which had reduced its defect like crack and so on.
