The center floor is a part of underbody of cars. The assembling method is mostly a resistant spot welding. But the resistant spot welding has many demerits in productivity such as low welding speed, large spatter occurring, hard to verify the welding quality. The laser welding has many merits such as high welding speed, high static and dynamic weld strength. So the laser welding has been studied to substituted the resistant spot welding. Therefore, in this study, as a pre-evaluation stage for replacing the resistance spot welding with laser in production of automobile parts, the weldability of cold rolled and zinc coated steel sheets is studied and also evaluated the weld strength by the tensile shear test. And the shape of weld bead appearances and micro structure of the weld bead section is also evaluated.
In automotive industry, the studies about light weight vehicle and improving the productivity have been accomplished. For that, TRIP steel was developed and research for the laser welding process have been performed. In this study, the monitoring system using photodiode was developed for laser welding process of TRIP steel. With measuring light, neural network model for estimating bead width and tensile strength was made and weld quality classification algorithm was formulated with fuzzy inference method.

Magnesium and magnesium alloys, the lightest structural materials, have been received plenty of global attention recently. These alloys could be applied in various fields, especially the electronics industry, because of their excellent electromagnetic interference shielding. However, the welding technique of magnesium alloys has not been established. This study is related to the welding of AZ31B magnesium alloy by a short-pulsed a Nd:YAG laser. Two types of pulse waves, square pulse and variable pulse, were used to control weld defects. Results show that the crack and porosity, generated in the weld, had not been controlled by general square pulse. But through the application of variable pulse, the defects could be prevented and the good weld zone was obtained.
For the weld quality improvement and the convenient operation of machines, laser vision system can be used to track weld seams on pressure vessels. There are many bad conditions to the weld grooves such as cutting error, gap variation of weld joint, and offset error of center line caused by misalignment. We developed a laser vision seam tracking system which consists of a laser vision sensor, a two axis positioning mechanism and a user interface program running on the Windows system. It was found that our system worked well for U, V and X shaped grooves. We used an industrial PC as the system controller to secure immunity to electrical noise and dust. We introduce here a simple and...

Quality evaluation of laser welded MCFC separator panels with large active area was performed. Lap joint was applied to produce stable air-tight seam weld by employing Nd:YAG laser. Results showed that surface contamination played a key role to form weld defects at the joint interface. However, there was no evidence that weld width at the lap joint changed after the stack operation time of 2,890h. Test results also revealed that the reinforcement values which were measured on the weld line after long time operation, were stable.

In order to analyze the forming characteristics of laser welded tailored blanks, laser welded blanks of different thickness and strength combinations were prepared and tensile, stretching, stretch flanging and deep drawing tests were done. The tensile elongation perpendicular to the weld line, stretching and stretch flanging formability decreased with increasing the deformation restraining force (strength ${\times}$ thickness) ratio between two welded sheets. The tensile elongation along weld line reached a value above 90% of the single sheet's elongation. Stretch flanging formability was reduced to approximately 10% of the single sheet value when the deformation restraining force ratio between two welded sheets was increased to two. Weld line movement of deep drawing test specimens was also affected by the strength ratio of the combined sheets, the weld line location and forming conditions. In all forming modes of tailored blanks, excessive weld line movement resulted from strain concentrations at the weaker sheet and resulted in fracture of the weaker side.
Welding using lasers can be mass-produced in high speed. In the laser welding, performing real-time evaluation of the welding quality is very important in enhancing the efficiency of welding. In this study, the plasma and molten metal which are generated during laser welding were measured using the UV sensor and IR sensor. The results of laser welding were classified into five categories such as optimal heat input, little low heat input, low heat input, focus off, and nozzle change. Also, a system was formulated which uses the measured signals with a fuzzy pattern recognition method which is used to perform real-time evaluation of the welding quality and the defects which can occur in laser welding. Weld quality prediction program was developed using previous weld results and statistical program which could show the trend of weld quality and signal was developed.

The material properties of laser welding zone such as strength coefficient, work-hardening exponent, and plastic anisotropic ratio are analytically obtained from those of base metals based on the tensile tests. . The finite element formulation is developed for predicting strain distributions and weld line movements in the forming processes of laser welded blank. The welding zone(WZ) is modelled with the several, narrow finite elements whose material characteristics are based on the experimental results and the analytical equations. In order to show an application of the developed weld element the stamping process of auto-body door inner panel is simulated. FEM predictions are compared and showed good agreements with experimental observations.
The laser welding and its analysis of thin-sheet carbon steels were carried out with high power CO$_2$1aser. Bead on plate welding of thin sheet was examined to investigate the effect of weld variables of laser welding, and to obtain optimum welding condition. Butt-welding was also carried out to show the effect of gap on the laser weldability of thin sheet. At high welding speed, the partial penetration was obtained by low heat input. Otherwise, porosity was formed in the bead at low weld speed because of too many heat input. The maximum gap tolerance on laser welding was observed to be about 0.2mm. This gap size has good relationship with beam size of laser spot(about 0.3mm). The formability of welded sheet was about 80% value of base metal and the gap size has not affected on the formability, although weld quality is dependent on the gap size.
In this paper, the coaxial monitoring system to capture image of weld pool was developed in laser-arc hybrid welding. In order to obtain the reliable image, green laser was used as a illumination system and measuring components such as band pass filter, ND (Neutral Density) filter and shutter speed was designed and optimized. Using this monitoring system, weld pool images were captured according to laser power, welding speed, welding current and interspace between laser and arc through the experiment. ANOVA (Analysis of Variation) was carried out to identify the influence of process variables on bead widths extracted from captured images of monitoring system. Welding speed and current were major factor to affect weld pool.
