  • This study was carried out to investigate safety evaluation of agricultural reservoirs due to raising the embankment. The seepage analysis and large-scale model test were performed to compare and analyze the pore water pressure(PWP), leakage quantity, settlement and piping phenomenon in the inclined core type and the vertical core type embankments. The PWP after raising the embankment showed smaller than before raising the embankment and the stability for piping after raising the embankment. The allowable seepage quantity and the allowable leakage for the steady state and transient conditions is within the range of safe management standard. After raising the embankment in the inclined core, there was no infiltration by leakage. For the vertical core, the PWP showed a large change by faster infiltration of pore water than in the inclined core. In a rapid drawdown, inclined core was remained stable but the vertical core showed a large change in PWP. Settlement after raising the embankment showed larger amounts of settlement than before raising the embankment. The leakage quantity before raising the embankment and the inclined core type showed no leakage. From the result, an instrument system that can accurately estimate a change of PWP shall be established for the rational maintenance and stabilization of raising the embankment for agricultural reservoirs.

  • Since the particle sizes of the coarse materials used in dam or harbor constructions are much larger than those of typical soils, it is desirable that large shear testing apparatuses are used when performing shear tests on the coarse materials to obtain as accurate results as possible. Two large-scale shear testing apparatuses, large direct shear testing apparatus and large triaxial shear testing apparatus, are commonly used. Currently in Korea, however, there have not been many cases in which shear tests were done using the large apparatus due to mainly difficulties in manufacturing, diffusing, and operating them. In present study, both large direct shear tests and large triaxial shear tests were performed on the coarse materials, which are used as dam fill materials, for 6 test cases in which particle sizes, specimen sizes, vertical pressure (confining pressure) conditions were little different, and then, the shear strength characteristics of the materials were compared with the two different shear tests. The test results showed that, by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, overall the shear strength obtained by the large direct shear tests was larger than that by the large triaxial shear tests. Moreover, the shear strength under the normal stress of 1,000 kPa was about 10 to 70% larger for the large direct shear tests than for the large triaxial shear tests, revealing the larger differences in the coarse materials, compared to typical soils.

  • A large-scale fire test was conducted for interior materials from a vehicle installed within a fire test room (ISO 9705). The interior materials are satisfying the Korean guideline for the safety of rail vehicles, where the guideline has taken effect since December 2004 in Korea. The output of ignition source (gas burner) was increased in several controlled steps. The objectives of this test are to assess the fire performance in terms of ignition and flame spread on interior lining materials and to provide data on an enclosure fires involving train interior materials that grow to flashover. These data will be used to develop and calibrate models for fire growth on the interiors of the railway vehicle.

  • On this study, modeling works using Cone tools simulation method were made for the prediction of real fire test results such as small to large scale fire tests including ISO 5660-1, EN 13823 and ISO 13784-1. For those simulation prediction, three real fire tests were performed in advance. In addition, Real data from ISO 5660-1 test were applied to this simulation modeling. Finally, the comparative analysis between Real fire tests and Simulation results were made out. Also, the Classifying evaluation by EURO Class using EN 13501-1 were taken off.

  • A high-speed rail system represents a typical example of large-scale multi-disciplinary systems, consisting of subsystems such as train, electrical hardware, electronics, control, information, communication, civil technology etc. The system design and acquisition data of the large-scale system must be the subject under strict configuration control and management. This paper presents the results from systems engineering application to High Speed Rollingstock 350 eXperimental for management of test and evaluation.

  • The STELLA program was launched to support the PGSFR development in 2012 and for the 2nd stage, the STELLA-2 facility was designed to investigate the integral effect of safety systems including the comprehensive interaction among PHTS, IHTS and DHRS. In STELLA-2, the long-term transient behavior after accidents can be observed and the overall safety aspect can also be evaluated. In this paper, the basic design concept from engineering basis to specific design is described. The design was aimed to meet similarity criteria and requirements based on various non-dimensional numbers and the result satisfied the key features to explain the reasoning of safety evaluation. The result of this study was used to construct the facility and the experiment is on-going. In general, the final design meets the similarity criteria of the multidimensional physics inside the reactor pool. And also, for the conservation of natural circulation phenomena, the design meets the similarity requirements of geometry and thermo-dynamic behavior.

  • Since a cavitation pattern in model scale can be different from that in full scale, it has been highly demanded to measure a fluctuating pressure induced by propeller in full scale. For the verification of the cavitation test for 105K lanker in the large cavitation tunnel in Samsung Ship Model Basin(SSMB), an effective pressure fluctuation measurement system was developed and a series of full scale measurements was carried out. These results were compared with those of cavitation tests in SSMB. The measured results in full scale gave good agreements to those in model tests. The fluctuating pressure at $2^{nd}$ blade frequency in full scale seems to be highly dependent upon tip loading.

  • In a turbulent free shear flow, the large scale motion is characterized by the intermittent flow which arises from the interaction between the turbulent fluid and the irrotational fluid of the environment through the mean velocity gradient. This large scale motion causes a bulk convection whose effect is similar to the spatial diffusion process. In this paper, the total diffusion process is proposed to be approximated by weighted sum of the bulk convection due to the large scale motion and the usual gradient diffusion due to small scale motion. The diffusion term in conventional .kappa.-.epsilon. model requires on more equation of the intermittency transport equation. A production term of this equation means mass entrainment from the irrotational fluid to the turbulent one. In order to test the validity of the proposed model, a plane jet is predicted by this method. Numerical results of this model is found to yield better agreement with experiment than the standard .kappa.-.epsilon. model and Byggstoyl & Kollmann's model(1986). Present hybrid diffusion model requires further tests for the check of universality of model and for the model constant fix.
