  • This study was carried out to evaluate urban environmental structure in Taegu metropolitan region(TMR) with factor analysis, fuzzy set theory, geostatistic and geographic information system(GIS). The factor analysis could choose the representative one out of multiple variables and simplify the evaluation of the urban environmental structure. The fuzzy approach is an attempt to model an aspect of human thinking previously neglected; it starts from the premise that humans don't represent classes of objects as fully disjoint but rather as sets where transitions from membership to non-membership is gradual. The Geographic Information System(GIS) could connect attributes of factor scores derived from factor analysis to digital map by a method so called 'Spatial join'. The results obtained were as follows: Urbanization appearance was concentrated in the large cities, and this appearance was partial extremely, therefore, there has been a structural gap between urban area and agricultural area which was unified into the urban area. All inclinations didn't become worse after sudden urbanization. For example, suburban agriculture was developed as a large scale in the region near the large cities. Then it encouraged farmers in changing their old cultivating methods to the latest ones. But many districts in urban fringe had symptom of urbanization, the districts which were located between large cities have been developed gradually because of urban sprawl, and played a role in connecting each city. Therefore, due to the urbanization, forestry area and agricultural land, well conserved in the agricultural town, could be easily destroyed. In a different way with the urbanization of the Seoul metropolitan region, that of TMR was centralized upon the center of each city, and it was also very partial. But, because so many regions have the potentiality of urbanization, hereafter, the urbanization process in each region is likely to be different multifariously according to the urban management methods.

  • The invention of fusion wilding technology has brought on a revolutionary change in manufacturing industry which enables the construction of large scale high temperature plants in chemical, petrochemical and power generation industries. However, among the failure cases of high temperature components, premature failures of weldments have taken a large percentage that indicates the detrimental effect of welding on structural integrity. The accurate prediction of the high temperature behaviour of welded components is thus becoming increasingly important in order to realise an optimised design and maintenance of a plant life. In the present paper, recent research activities on high temperature behaviour of welded structures are briefly summarised. A local deformation measuring technique is proposed to determine the creep properties of weldment constituents. A damage mechanics approach is introduced to study the life reduction and ductility reduction due to the presence of a weld in high temperature structures. Finally, the high temperature creep crack growth in weldments is discussed.

  • The development of inexpensive high throughput methods to identify individual DNA sequences is important to the future growth of medical genetics. This has become increasingly apparent as psychiatric geneticists focus more attention on the molecular basis of complex multifactorial diseases at which most of psychiatric disease is estimated. Furthermore, candidate gene approaches used in identifying disease associated genes necessitate screening large sequence blocks for changes tracking with the disease state. Even after such genes are isolated, large scale mutational analysis will often be needed for risk assessment studies to define the likely medical consequences of carrying a mutated gene. This review provide basic knowledge of up-to-date technology, cDNA microarray which enables above mentioned various research themes.

  • During the past decade, many electrical transmission tower structures have failed during downburst events. This study is a part of a research program aimed to understand the behaviour of transmission lines under such localized wind events. The present study focuses on the assessment of the dynamic behaviour of the line conductors under downburst loading. A non-linear numerical model, accounting for large deformations and the effect of pretension loading, is developed and used to predict the natural frequencies and mode shapes of conductors at various loading stages. A turbulence signal is extracted from a set of full-scale data. It is added to the mean component of the downburst wind field previously evaluated from a CFD analysis. Dynamic analysis is performed using various downburst configurations. The study reveals that the response is affected by the background component, while the resonant component turns to be negligible due large aerodynamic damping of the conductors.

  • High-frequency combustion instabilities may occur during the development of feasible engine combustors. These instabilities can result in irreparable damages to the wall of combustors or the degradation of engine performance. So, it is essential to identify injectors that have high stability characteristics during the early stages of development. The objective of present study was to assess the stability of coaxial injectors and an impinging injector with different recess lengths in order to develop stable injectors optimally. Stability margin was evaluated based on the distance from operating condition to the unstable regions. A simulating combustion test method was used to analyze the stability of injectors. A small-scale combustion chamber was designed to simulate the first tangential acoustic mode of the actual combustor. Gaseous oxygen and a mixture of methane and propane were used as simulant propellants to satisfy their flow similarity to the actual propellants of a combustor in a liquid rocket combustor. The results indicated that injectors having small recess lengths showed relatively large combustion stability margins. For the injectors of large recess lengths, instability regions with large and super-large amplitude oscillations were observed. Thus, injector with shorter recess lengths had a higher stability than that of longer one due to the different mixing processes.

  • Electrical safety monitoring System (ESMS) is a critical component in modern power systems, which is characterized by large-scale access points, massive users and versatile requirements. For convenience of the information integration and analysis, the software development, maintenance, and application in the system, the cloud platform based ESMS is established and assessed in this paper. Firstly the framework of the system is proposed, and then the assessment scheme with a set of evaluation indices are presented, by which the appropriate cloud product can be chosen to meet the requirements of a specific application. Moreover, to calculate the weights of the evaluation indices under uncertainty, an improved interval AHP method is adopted to take into consideration of the fuzziness of expert scoring, the qualitative consistency test, and the two normalizations in the process of eigenvectors. Case studies have been made to verify the feasibility of the assessment approach for ESMS.

  • Growth promoters including hormonal substances and antibiotics are used legally and illegally in food producing animals for the growth promotion of livestock animals. Hormonal substances still under debate in terms of their human health impacts are estradiol-$17\beta$, progesterone, testosterone, zeranol, trenbolone, and melengestrol acetate (MGA). Many of the risk assessment results of natural steroid hormones have presented negligible impacts when they are used under good veterinary practices. For synthetic hormonelike substances, ADIs and MRLs have been established for food safety along with the approval of animal treatment. Small amounts of antibiotics added to feedstuff present growth promotion effects via the prevention of infectious diseases at doses lower than therapeutic dose. The induction of antimicrobial resistant bacteria and the disruption of normal human intestinal flora are major concerns in terms of human health impact. Regulatory guidance such as ADIs and MRLs fully reflect the impact on human gastrointestinal microflora. However, before deciding on any risk management options, risk assessments of antimicrobial resistance require large-scale evidence regarding the relationship between antimicrobial use in food-producing animals and the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance in human pathogens. In this article, the risk profiles of hormonal and antibacterial growth promoters are provided based on recent toxicity and human exposure information, and recommendations for risk management to prevent human health impacts by the use of growth promoters are also presented.

  • Urban Air Mobility is expected to resolve some problems in urban transportation such as traffic congestion and air pollution. Various studies for a large-scale commercialization of UAM are being actively conducted. To that end, the UAM Traffic Management system aims at securing a safety and an efficiency of UAM operations. In this study, a risk assessment model is proposed to evaluate the risk of collision between a vehicle and surrounding obstacles. The proposed model is conceived from the past studies for determining a proper separation distance between parallel runways for their independent operations. The model calculates the risk that the surveillance system fails to meet a target level of safety for a given buffer zone size between a designed route and surrounding obstacles. The model is applied to one of the routes proposed in K-UAM roadmap to evaluate its performances.

  • In recent years, as human casualties and property damage caused by hazardous waves have increased in the East Sea, precise wave prediction skills have become necessary. In this study, the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) third-generation numerical wave model was calibrated and optimized to enhance the accuracy of winter storm wave prediction in the East Sea. We used Source Term 6 (ST6) and physical observations from a large-scale experiment conducted in Australia and compared its results to Komen's formula, a default in SWAN. As input wind data, we used Korean Meteorological Agency's (KMA's) operational meteorological model called Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System (RDAPS), the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts' newest 5th generation re-analysis data (ERA5), and Japanese Meteorological Agency's (JMA's) meso-scale forecasting data. We analyzed the accuracy of each model's results by comparing them to observation data. For quantitative analysis and assessment, the observed wave data for 6 locations from KMA and Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA) were used, and statistical analysis was conducted to assess model accuracy. As a result, ST6 models had a smaller root mean square error and higher correlation coefficient than the default model in significant wave height prediction. However, for peak wave period simulation, the results were incoherent among each model and location. In simulations with different wind data, the simulation using ERA5 for input wind datashowed the most accurate results overall but underestimated the wave height in predicting high wave events compared to the simulation using RDAPS and JMA meso-scale model. In addition, it showed that the spatial resolution of wind plays a more significant role in predicting high wave events. Nevertheless, the numerical model optimized in this study highlighted some limitations in predicting high waves that rise rapidly in time caused by meteorological events. This suggests that further research is necessary to enhance the accuracy of wave prediction in various climate conditions, such as extreme weather.

  • The high cost of ultra-high-performance engineered cementitious composite (UHP-ECC) is currently a crucial issue, especially in terms of the polyethylene (PE) fibers use. In this paper, cheap calcium carbonate whiskers (CW) were evaluated on the feasibility of hybrid with PE fibers. Diverse combinations of PE fibers and CW were employed to investigate the multi-scale enhancement on the UHP-ECC performance. A probabilistic-based UHP-ECC tensile strain reliability analysis approach was utilized, which was in general agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, a multi-dimensional integrated representation was conducted for the comprehensive assessment of UHP-ECC. Results illustrated that CW improved the compressive strength and energy dissipation capacity of UHP-ECC owing to the microscopic strengthening mechanism. CW and PE fiber further promoted the saturated cracking of composite by multi-scale crack arresting effect. In particular, PE1.75-CW0.5 specimen possessed the best overall performance. The ultimate cracking width of PE1.75-CW0.5 group had 98 ㎛, which was 46.18% lower compared to PE2-CW0 group, the 28d compressive strength were slightly improved, the tensile strain capacity was comparable to that of PE2-CW0 group. The results above demonstrated that combinations of PE fiber and CW could significantly enhance the comprehensive performance of UHP-ECC, which was beneficial for large-scale engineering applications.
