Electrical rhythmicity in the gastrointestinal (GI) muscles is generated by pacemaker cells, known as interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC). In the present study, we investigated the effect of external divalent cations on pacemaking activity in cultured ICC from murine small intestine by using whole-cell patch clamp techniques. ICC generated pacemaker currents under a voltage clamp or electrical pacemaker potentials under a current clamp, and showed a mean amplitude of $-500{\pm}50$ pA or $30{\pm}1$ mV and the frequency of $18{\pm}2$ cycles/min. Treatments of the cells with external 0 mM $Ca^{2+}$ stopped pacemaking activity of ICC. In the presence of 2 mM $Ca^{2+}$, 0 mM external $Mg^{2+}$ depolarized the resting membrane potential, and there was no change in the frequency of pacemaking activity. However, 10 mM external $Mg^{2+}$ decreased the frequency of pacemaking activity ($6.75{\pm}1$ cycles/min, n=5). We replaced external 2 mM $Ca^{2+}$ with equimolar $Ba^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$, and they all developed inward current in the sequence of $Ba^{2+}$>$Mn^{2+}$>$Sr^{2+}$. Also the frequency of the pacemaking activity was stopped or irregulated. We investigated the effect of 10 mM $Ba^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$ and $Sr^{2+}$ on pacemaking activity of ICC in the presence of external 0 mM $Mg^{2+}$, and found that 10 mM $Ba^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$ induced large inward current and stopped the pacemaking activity of ICC (n=5). Interestingly, 10 mM $Sr^{2+}$ induced small inward current and potentiated the amplitude of pacemaking activity of ICC (n=5). These results indicate that extracellular $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ are requisite for the pacemaking activity of ICC.

A model of the propulsion mechanism, I, II, III was based on a two-dimensional model of the Weis-Fogh mechanism and consisted of one or two wings in a square channel. The sailing and vibration performance characteristics of model ships were tested to compare with each other. we took results as follow. Thrust of propulsion model, I and III was increased by 31% and 43%, the speed of model ship by 20% and 23%, When compared to model II in same condition. The thrust improvement using the elastic spring wing was effective not only on all models but also in the real ship. The maximum amplitude and RMS were largest at the opening angle ${\alpha}=15^{\circ}$ and smallest at ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ on the vibration of model ship. The thrust of propulsion model III with opening angle ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$, phase ${\Delta}T=0^{\circ}$ was large, but the amplitude of vibration was small relatively.

We employed a method eliminating a temporally partial principal component (PC) of multichannel-recorded neuromagnetic fields for excluding spatially correlated noises from event-evoked signals. The noises in magnetoencephalography (MEG) are considered to be mainly spontaneous neuromagnetic fields which are spatially correlated. In conventional MEG experiments, the amplitude of the spontaneous neuromagnetic field is much lager than that of the evoked signal and the synchronized characteristics of the correlated rhythmic noise makes it possible for us to extract the correlation noises from the evoked signal by means of the general PC analysis. However, the whole-time PC of the fields still contains a little projection component of the evoked signal and the elimination of the PC results in the distortion of the evoked signal. Especially, the distortion will not be negligible when the amplitude of the evoked signal is relatively large or when the evoked signals have a spatially-asymmetrical distribution which does not cancel out the corresponding elements of the covariance matrix. In the period of prestimulus, there are only the spontaneous fields and we can find the pure noise PC that is not including the evoked signal. Besides that, we propose a method, called the extended temporal decorrelation method (ETDM), to suppress the distortion of the noise PC from remanent evoked signal components. In this study, we applied the Partial Principal component elimination method (PPCE) and ETDM to simulated signals and the auditory evoked signals that had been obtained with our homemade 37-channel magnetometer-based SQUID system. We demonstrate here that PPCE and ETDM reduce the number of epochs required in averaging to about half of that required in conventional averaging.
It is desirable to perform nondestructive evaluation (NDE) to assess material properties and part homogeneity because the manufacturing of carbon/carbon brake disks requires complicated and costly processes. In this work several ultrasonic techniques were applied to carbon/carbon brake disks (322mm ad, 135mm id) for the evaluation of spatial variations in material properties that are attributable to the manufacturing process. In a large carbon/carbon disk manufactured by chemical vapor infiltration (CYI) method, the spatial variation of ultrasonic velocity was measured and found to be consistent with the densification behavior in CYI process. Low frequency (e.g., 1-5MHz) through-transmission scans based on both amplitude and time-of-flight of the ultrasonic pulse were used for mapping out the material property inhomogeneity. Images based on both the amplitude and the time-of-flight of the transmitted ultrasonic pulse showed significant variation in the radial direction. The radial variations in ultrasonic velocity and attenuation were attributed to a density variation caused by the more efficient densification of pitch impregnation near the id and od and by the less efficient densification away from the exposed edged of the disk. Ultrasonic velocities in the edges of the disk. Ultrasonic velocities in the thickness direction were also measured as a function of location using dry-coupling transducers ; the results were consistent with the densification behavior. However, velocities in the in-plane directions (circumferential and radial) seemed to be affected more by the relative contents of fabric and chopped fiber, and less by the void content.

In the earlier days, when the diesel engine was used for ship propulsion, its shaft had often been broken by uncertain causes. Bauer suggested, for the first time in 1900, that it resulted from the torsional vibration of the shaft system. From 1901 to 1902, Gumbel and Frahm found out that shaft failures were caused by the resonance of the shaft system in critical speed. Since that time, valuable theories, empirical formulae and methods of vibration analysis were introduced by many investigators such as Geiger, Holzer, Lewis, Carter, Porter, Constant, Timoshenko, Dorey, Den Hartog, Tuplin, Ker Wilson, Bradbury etc. But, as the calculation of the damping energy involves very complicated and uncertain factors, the estimated amplitude of the torsional vibration is incorrect and uncertain. Besides, as high-powered engines have been installed on large vessels or special vessels and exciting force has been increased, new problems of the torsional vibration have continuously occurred. Although we can calculate the approximate natural frequencies or estimate their amplitude and additional stress in the design stage, through the above mentioned studies, the results of the calculations are unsatisfactory, and so much time is needed to carry out the calculation by hand. The authors have developed a computer program to calculate its natural frequencies, the amplitudes and additional stresses of the torsional vibration in the marine diesel engine shafting. In developing the computer program, the authors have paid the special attention to the calculation of the damping energy. To verify the reliability of the developed computer program, the torsional vibration of several propulsion shaftings which are driven by the diesel engine has been analyzed. The results calculted by the authors' computer program show good agreements with those of the actual measurements and are better than the results of engine maker's calculation.
A major concern with blasting at surface mines is generation of ground vibration, air blast, flyrock, dust & fume and their impact on nearby structures and environment. A study was conducted at a coal mine in India which produces 10 million tonne of coal and 27 million cubic meter of overburden per annum. Draglines and shovels with dumpers carry out the removal of overburden. Detonation of 100 tonnes of explosives in a blasting round is a common practice of the mine. These large sized blasts often led to complaints from the nearby inhabitants regarding ground vibrations and their affects on their houses. Eighteen dragline blasts were conducted and their impacts on nearby structures were investigated. Extended seismic arrays were used to identify the vibration characteristics within a few tens meters of the blasts and also as modified by the media at distances over 5 km. 10 to 12 seismographs were deployed in an array to gather the time histories of vibrations. A signature blast was conducted to know the fundamental frequency of the particular transmitting media between the blast face and the structures. The faster decay of high frequency components was observed. It was also observed that at distances of 5km, the persistence of vibrations in the structures was substantially increased by more 10 seconds. The proximity of the frequency of the ground vibration to the structure's fundamental frequencies produced the resonance in the structures. On the basis of the fundamental frequency of the structures, the delay interval was optimized, which resulted into lower amplitude and reduced persistence of vibration in the structures.
Gamma-ray must be detected and processed immedietely after generation of it in the circumstances where it exists. Software methology may be used to process randomly generated signals, but its memory size and processing time become large. By the way, the hardware circuit to detect randomly generated signals is generalized in industrial site, while those circuits are not able to answer to the cases whose amplitude are very small and also speed high. We researched and developed hardware based peak-hold circuit that is able to detect peaks of gamma-ray signals through direct reading out their values by ADC at the time of maximum reaching for the small amplitude and high speed signals, and proposed and estimated its results in this paper. This peak-hold circuit is adequate to use in the radiation circumstances in which the gamma-rays are heavy because its circuit can catch high speed signals efficiently without software signal processing supports.

Viscous solutions of supersonic side jet nozzle and supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. For rapid and abrupt control of a missile in supersonic flight, side jet on a missile body is found to be a useful devise as evidenced by recent missile development at several nations. The magnitude of the side jet and the duration of it decide the level of control of such a missile system. The aerodynamic characteristics of the side jet devise itself are examined in terms of key parameters such as the side jet nozzle geometry, the chamber pressure and temperature. On the other hand, the jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the plate/nozzle distance increases, and the frequency of the wall pressure is estimated on the order of 10.0 KHz. Objectives of this paper are to show accurate simulation of nozzle flow itself and to demonstrate the jet flow structure when the jet interacts with a wall at a close range.
Recently, precast concrete tracks are replacing ballast track for efficient and economic maintenance of track. Precast concrete railroad tracks are manufactured in factory, and transported to railroad construction site for installation. Therefore, quality of precast concrete track itself should be sufficiently good. On the contrary to the convenient manufacturing of precast concrete track, the installation of a precast concrete track requires careful steps. Typically, a precast concrete track is placed on an approximately 15-cm thick lean concrete layer. A mortar is filled between lean concrete layer and precast concrete track to adjust the sloping angle of a precast concrete track for a safe train operation at a curvy section. Then, the use of filled mortarproduces a void underneath a precast concrete track, which is harmful to structural safety of a precast concrete track undercyclic loading. Therefore, it is essential to make sure that there is no void left beneath a precast concrete track after mortar filling. In the continuous resonance method, the amplitude of frequency response measured using an instrumented hammer and an accelerometer is plotted against a pseudo-depth, which is half of the wave velocity divided by frequency. The frequency response functions are measured at consecutive measurement locations, 6-cm interval between measurement points, and then combined together to generate a 2-D plot of frequency response. The sections with strong reflections or large amplitude of frequency response are suspicious areas with internal voids and unfilled areas. The 2-D frequency response plot was efficient in locating problematic sections just by examining the color shade of a visualized plot in 2-D format. Some of the problematic sections were drilled to make a visual inspection of mortar filling. The visual image of interface between mortar and precast concrete track was verified using the validity of the continuous resonance technique adopted in this research.
It is difficult to control children who exhibit negative behavior in dental clinics. Various methods are used for preventing pediatric dental patients from being afraid and for eliminating the factors that cause psychological anxiety. However, when it is difficult to apply this routine behavioral control technique, sedation therapy is used to provide quality treatment. When the sleep anesthesia treatment is performed at the dentist's clinic, it is challenging to identify emergencies using the current breath detection method. When a dentist treats a patient that is under the influence of an anesthetic, the patient is unconscious and cannot immediately respond, even if the airway is blocked, which can cause unstable breathing or even death in severe cases. During emergencies, respiratory instability is not easily detected with first aid using conventional methods owing to time lag or noise from medical devices. Therefore, abnormal breathing needs to be evaluated in real-time using an intuitive method. In this paper, we propose a method for identifying abnormal breathing in real-time using an intuitive method. Respiration signals were measured using a 3M Littman electronic stethoscope when the patient's posture was supine. The characteristics of the signals were analyzed by applying the signal processing theory to distinguish abnormal breathing from normal breathing. By applying a short-time Fourier transform to the respiratory signals, the frequency range for each patient was found to be different, and the frequency of abnormal breathing was distributed across a broader range than that of normal breathing. From the wavelet transform, time-frequency information could be identified simultaneously, and the change in the amplitude with the time could also be determined. When the difference between the amplitude of normal breathing and abnormal breathing in the time domain was very large, abnormal breathing could be identified.
