The analysis of long-term performance of pavement sections under wheel loads is normally conducted in two separated steps. First the resilient behavior of the pavement is calculated assuming the pavement is a layered or discrete elastic medium, and then the permanent deformation is evaluated based on empirical permanent displacement equations. Material properties required in both steps can be obtained from cyclic triaxial tests, in other words, resilient and permanent deformation tests. While this analytical approach is simple and convenient, it does not consider the modulus degradation caused by cyclic loads, and some types of reinforcements such as geosynthetic cannot be modeled in this type of analysis. A model for degraded secant modulus is proposed and suggested to be used for the analysis of permanent behavior of unpaved roadway sections. The parameter for suggested model can be obtained from cyclic triaxial tests, regular practice in pavement engineering. Examples to estimate the model parameters are presented based on both laboratory permanent deformation test and large-scale plate load test.
Coal ash from thermal power plants has been produced in large quantity and discarded uselessly, However, it is possible to supply construction material properly by utilizing the coal ash as construction material. In this study, the applicable model and its applicability for deformation analysis of coal ash fill and reclamation ground are studied. Camflay model gives complete constitutive law which illustrates deformation and pore water pressure while soil is loaded under the various stresses at drained and undrained conditions. The merit of proposed model which is acquired from laboratory tests is that only a few soil parameters are available. The whole parameters of Camflay model are obtained by typical mechanical test and CV triaxial test on the sample with optimum mixing ratio( i.e. fly ash : bottom ash=5:5) Then the results from proposed numerical analysis are compared with laboratory results. The differences between laboratory test and numerical analysis are negligible. Parameters deter mined from laboratory tests are useful as a basic data for deformation analysis of coal ash reclamation ground using Camflay model.
A finite element nonlinear stress-deformation model with multi-interface element is applied to the stability analysis of waste landfill slope. Strength parameters of waste and geosynthetic materials are obtained from the triaxial test of waste and the direct shear test of geosynthetics, respectively. The landfill models used for the numerical models are fit to regulations of the Korean waste management law. The results of the strength tests showed linear behavior for the waste and nonlinear behavior for the eosynthectic materials. The stability analysis with multi-interface element for the geosynthetic materials in the liner system showed large shear stress and slippage at the boundary of the foundation and the slope of the waste fill. This analysis verified the necessity of multi-interface analysis for waste landfills with composite liners.

This paper presents experimental results of a series of 1-g shaking table model tests performed on end-bearing single piles and pile groups to investigate the effect of particle size on the dynamic behavior of soil-pile systems. Two soil-pile models consisting of a single-pile and a $4{\times}2$-pile group were tested twice; first using Jumoonjin sand, and second using Australian Fine sand, which has a smaller particle size. In the case of single-pile models, the lateral displacement was almost within 1% of pile diameter which corresponds to the elastic range of the pile. The back-calculated p-y curves show that the subgrade reaction of the Jumoonjin-sand-model ground was larger than that of the Australian Fine-sand-model ground at the same displacement. This phenomenon means that the stress-strain behavior of Jumoonjin sand was initially stiffer than that of Australian Fine sand. This difference was also confirmed by resonant column tests and compression triaxial tests. And the single pile p-y backbone curves of the Australian fine sand were constructed and compared with those of the Jumoonjin sand. As a result, the stiffness of the p-y backbone curves of Jumunjin sand was larger than those of Australian fine sand. Therefore, using the same p-y curves regardless of particle size can lead to inaccurate results when evaluating dynamic behavior of soil-pile system. In the case of the group-pile models, the lateral displacement was much larger than the elastic range of pile movement at the same test conditions in the single-pile models. The back-calculated p-y curves in the case of group pile models were very similar in both sands because the stiffness difference between the Jumoonjin-sand-model ground and the Australian Fine-sand-model ground was not significantly large at a large strain level, where both sands showed non-linear behavior. According to a series of single pile and group pile test results, the evaluation group pile effect using the p-multiplier can lead to inaccurate results on dynamic behavior of soil-pile system.
The carbonate sands of the Sabkha layer in the Middle East have very low shear strength. Therefore, instant settlement and time-dependent secondary settlement occur when inner voids are exposed, as in the case of particle crushing. We analyzed settlement of the Sabkha layer under a large-scale foundation by hydrotesting, and compared the field test results with the results of laboratory tests. With ongoing particle crushing, we observed the following stress-strain behaviors: strain-hardening (Sabkha GL-1.5 m), strain-perfect (Sabkha GL-7.0 m), and strain-softening (Sabkha GL-7.5 m). General shear failure occurred most frequently in dense sand and firm ground. Although the stress-strain behavior of Sabkha layer carbonate sand that of strain-softening, the particle crushing strength was low compared with the strain-hardening and strain-perfect behaviors. The stress-strain behaviors differ between carbonate sand and quartz sand. If the relative density of quartz sand is increased, the shear strength is also increased. Continuous secondary compression settlement occurred during the hydrotests, after the dissipation of porewater pressure. Particle crushing strength is relatively low in the Sabkha layer and its stress-strain behavior is strain-softening or strain-perfect. The particle crushing effect is dominant factor affecting foundation settlement in the Sabkha layer.

This study was performed to find the effect of parameters of numerical analysis model. To find the parameters of numerical analysis model, triaxial test and consolidation test were conducted and the results were compared and analyzed with various methods. Preloaded ground was analyzed with Hyperbolic and Modified Cam-Clay models. Hyperbolic model analysis result was good agreement with measured lateral displacement, and Modified Cam-Clay model agreed more than Hyperbolic model with settlement. When the parameters of models were changed, change of settlement on center of embankment and of maximum lateral displacement on distance 5m from end of embankment were compared. On Hyperbolic model the parameter K has large influence on settlement and lateral displacement. On Modified Cam-Clay model the parameters ${\Gamma}$ and M have large influence on settlement and lateral displacement, respectively.
Laboratory dynamic tests are carried out to assess the liquefaction potential of saturated sands in most countries. However, simple results such as the maximum cyclic shear stress and the number of cycles at initial liquefaction are used in the experimental assessment of liquefaction potential, even though various results can be obtained from the dynamic test. In addition, it seemed to be inefficient because more than three dynamic tests with different stress ratio have to be carried out to draw a liquefaction resistance experimental curve. To improve the present assessment method fur liquefaction potential, a new critical resistible characteristic far soil liquefaction is proposed and verified through conventional cyclic triaxial tests with Jumunjin sand. In the proposed method, various experimental data such as effective stress path, stress-strain relationship, and the change of excess pore water pressure can be used in the determination of cumulative plastic shear strains at every 1/4 cycle. Especially, the critical cumulative plastic shear strain to initiate liquefaction can be defined in a specific point called a phase change point in the effective stress path and it can be calculated from a hysteric curve of stress-strain relationship up to this point. Through this research, it is found that the proposed cumulative plastic shear strain can express the dissipated energy to resist dynamic loads and consider the realistic soil dynamic behavior of saturated sands reasonably. It is also found that the critical plastic shear strain can be used as a registible index of soils to represent the critical soil dynamic state, because it seems to include no effect of large deformation.
Nonlinear dynamic deformation characteristics, expressed in terms of normalized shear modulus reduction curve (G/$G_{max}-\log\gamma$, G/$G_{max}$ curve) and damping curve (D-$\log\gamma$), are important input parameters with shear wave velocity profile ($V_s$-profile) in the seismic analysis of (new or existing) fill dam. In this paper, the reasonable and economical methods to evaluate the nonlinear dynamic deformation characteristics for core zone and rockfill zone respectively are presented. For the core zone, 111 G/$G_{max}$ curves and 98 damping curves which meet the requirements of core material were compiled and representative curves and ranges were proposed for the three ranges of confining pressure (0~100 kPa, 100 kPa~200 kPa, more than 200 kPa). The reliability of the proposed curves for the core zone were verified by comparing with the resonant column test results of two kinds of core materials. For the rockfill zone, 135 G/$G_{max}$ curves and 65 damping curves were compiled from the test results of gravelly materials using large scale testing equipments. The representative curves and ranges for G/$G_{max}$ were proposed for the three ranges of confining pressure (0~50 kPa, 50 kPa~100 kPa, more than 100 kPa) and those for damping were proposed independently of confining pressure. The reliability of the proposed curves for the rockfill zone were verified by comparing with the large scale triaxial test results of rockfill materials in the B-dam which is being constructed.
This study has obtained Soil Water Retention Curve (SWRC) of the unsaturated soil from the volumetric pressure plate extractor test and the triaxial compression tests was also conducted. By using the rainfall data measured in the site the seepage analysis of unsteady flow was performed with the program of SEEP/W in Geostudio 2007 and stability of the slope was analyzed with SLOPE/W program. Results of analyses show that shear strength of the unsaturated soil increases with the increase of matric suction. And it was also found that the net volumetric stress and the apparent cohesion increased with the matric suction. The seepage analysis of rainfall represents that the increasing rate of negative pore pressure at the zone of large negative pore pressure is appeared to be high even though lower rainfall intensity, but this tendency declines with ground depth. The stability analysis of slope was carried out for the actual plane of failure with the data representing the field condition. The factor of safety thus calculated was about unity (1.0) or just below, which means that the adopted method of analysis is in good agreement with the field condition.
This paper described the behavior under repeated loading in triaxial compression test on clay. The experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of controlled various over-consolidation ratio and compaction energy, on the stress-strain behavior of clays. 1. The difference of deviator stress during repeated loading was greatly appeared at large strain. And pore water pressure was decreased at initial of unloading, but it was increased again before long. 2. The recoverable elastic strain (${{\Delta}{\varepsilon}e}$) and the slope of un-reloading were decreased with the increment of over-consolidation ratio (OCR). 3. The recoverable elastic strain (${{\Delta}{\varepsilon}e}$) was increased with the increment of strain rate but it was decreased with the increment of strain in strain rate tests. The slope of un-reloading (Eur) tends to increase with the increment of strain rate and it was decreased with the increment of strain. 4. The recoverable elastic strain was greatly increased with the increment of compaction energy and it slightly tends to decrease with the increment of strain on various compaction energy. The slope of un-reloading was not appeared markedly with increment of compaction energy but it tends to decrease with the increment of strain generally.
