  • An adaptive estimation and testing method is proposed for comparing dispersions among several ordered groups. Based upon the large sampling theory for nonparametric quartile estimators, we derive the order restricted estimators and construct a simple test statistic. This test statistic has a mixture of several chi-square distributions as its asymptotic null distribution. The proposed test is illustratively applied to survival time data for the patients with carcinoma of the oropharynx.

  • In this paper, we modify a multiple target angle tracking algorithm presented by Sword et al.. The predicted estimates, instead of the existing estimates, of the target angles are updated by the most recent output of the sensor array to improve the tracking performance of the algorithm for crossing targets. Also, the least square solution is modified to avoid abnormally large angle innovations when the target angles are very close. The improved performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by computer simulations.

  • In this paper, a new design technique which uses weighted least-sqare approach for the solution of the pole assignment problem is represented. This technique maybe used to assign some closed loop poles to places which reduce the large system input and output variance due to near pole-zero condition. The least-square approach is also applied to the design of servo self-tuning controller with integrator.

  • Results on the analytic behavior to the limiting spectral distribution of matrices of sample convariance type. studied in Marcenko and Pastur [2] are derived. using the Stieltjes transform it is shown that the limiting distrbution has a continuous derivative away from zero the derivative being analytic whenever it is positive and the behavior of it resembles the behavior of a square root function near the boundary of its support.

  • Refraction tomography requires an algorithm for efficiently computing the traveltimes and their $Fr\'{e}chet$ derivatives. We have attempted to solve the damped wave field using the frequency domain finite element model ing and then invoked the reciprocity theorem to calculate the $Fr\'{e}chet$ derivative of the traveltime with respect to the subsurface parameter. Then, we used a damped least square method to invert the traveltimes of the Marmousi 2 model. Numerical tests demonstrate that the refraction tomography with large aperture data can be used to estimate the smooth velocity model for the prestack depth migration.

  • Single crystals of YBa2Cu3O7-x have been grown in BaCuO2 flux at temperature of 125$0^{\circ}C$ and examined using XRD, EDAX and light microscopy. The YBCO crystals were grown in a cavity which was formed by the reduction of CuO and became large by the directional solidification in the crucible. The observed crystal growth habit is square planar with the c-axis normal to the plane. The surface morphology of grown crystals were growth ledges and growth sprial paterns on a (001) face.

  • A predictive functional relationship model is presented for the calibration problem in which the standard as well as the nonstandard measurements are subject to error. For the estimation of the relationship between the two measurements, the ordinary least squares and maximum likelihood estimation methods are considered, while for the prediction of unknown standard measurementswe consider direct and inverse approaches. Relative performances of those calibration procedures are compared in terms of the asymptotic mean square error of prediction.

  • In this paper, we study selecting a transformation so that the transformed variable is nearly symmetrically distributed. The large sample properties of an M-estimator of transformation parameter that is obtained by minimizing the integrated square of the imaginary part of the empirical characteristic function are investigated when a random sample is selected from some unspecified distribution. According to influence function calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, these estimates are less sensitive, than the normal model maximum likelihood estimates, to a few outliers.

  • Images reconstructed with EM algorithm have been observed to have checkerboard effects and have large distortions near edges as iterations proceed. We suggest a aimple algorithm of applying line process to the EM and Bayesian EM to reduce the distortions near edges. We show by simulation that this algorithm improves the clarity of the reconstructed image and has good properties based on root mean square error.

  • Dependence concepts for ordered two-way contingency tables have been of considerable interest. We consider a dependence concept which is less restrictive than likelihood ratio dependence and more restrictive than regression dependence. Maximum likelihood estimation of cell probability under this dependence restriction is studied. The likelihood ratio statistics for and against this dependence are proposed and their large sample distributions are derived. A real data is analyzed to illustrate the estimation and testing procedures.
