Generally, a structural system with large inextensional deformations, or in other words, non-strained deformation is called as 'Unstable Structure', Truss-linked structures, cable structures, membrane structures and movable structures as foldable space structures etc, are included in this category. In this paper, a dynamic analysis method for unstable structural systems is presented. Governing equations for dynamic analysis of unstable truss structures with inextensional displacements are derived. Because of singularity of inverse matrixin in practical analysis of unstable structure, the generalized inverse matrix is Introduced to resolve the singular problem. Also, the RREF technique is used to get the inextensional displacement mode. Two unstable truss structures are analyzed by using presented method. Damping is not considered. From the given results, it is known that proposed method is useful to figure out the dynamic behavior of unstable truss structures.
Closed form solutions for equilibrium and flexibility matrices of the Mindlin-Reissner theory based eight-node rectangular plate bending element (MRP8) using Integrated Force Method (IFM) are presented in this paper. Though these closed form solutions of equilibrium and flexibility matrices are applicable to plate bending problems with square/rectangular boundaries, they reduce the computational time significantly and give more exact solutions. Presented closed form solutions are validated by solving large number of standard square/rectangular plate bending benchmark problems for deflections and moments and the results are compared with those of similar displacement-based eight-node quadrilateral plate bending elements available in the literature. The results are also compared with the exact solutions.
A $C^{\circ}$ continuous finite element formulation of a higher order displacement theory is presented for predicting linear and geometrically non-linear in the sense of von Karman transient responses of composite and sandwich plates. The displacement model accounts for non-linear cubic variation of tangential displacement components through the thickness of the laminate and the theory requires no shear correction coefficients. In the time domain, the explicit central difference integrator is used in conjunction with the special mass matrix diagonalization scheme which conserves the total mass of the element and included effects due to rotary inertia terms. The parametric effects of the time step, finite element mesh, lamination scheme and orthotropy on the linear and geometrically non-linear responses are investigated. Numerical results for central transverse deflection, stresses and stress resultants are presented for square/rectangular composite and sandwich plates under various boundary conditions and loadings and these are compared with the results from other sources. Some new results are also tabulated for future reference.
Complex and large lattice type structures are frequently used in design of bridge, tower, crane and aerospace structures. In general, in order to analyze these structures we have used the finite element method(FEM). This method is the most widely used and powerful method for structural analysis lately. However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computational time because the FEM requires many degrees of freedom for solving dynamic problems exactly for these complex and large structures. For analyzing these structures on a personal computer, the authors developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). This method is based on the concept of the transfer of the nodal dynamic stiffness coefficient matrix which is related to force and displacement vector at each node. And we suggested TSCM for free vibration analysis of complex and large lattice type structures in the previous report. In this paper, we formulate forced vibration analysis algorithm for complex and large lattice type structures using extened TSCM. And we confirmed the validity of TSCM through computational results by the FEM and TSCM, and experimental results for lattice type structures with harmonic excitation.

Steel box girders are popular to the Practicing engineers for the its large Pure torsional constant. But closed box girders at-e susceptible to the eccentric loading due to the distortion of the cross section. Distorton of the box girder develops the warping normal stress and transverse flexural stress in the cross section and their magnitudes can be large unless internal diaphragms are installed sufficiently. In this study, stiffness matrix and equivalent nodal force vector are formulated on the basis of displacement method. Shape functions are directly derived from the homogeneous solution of the governing differential equation of the distortion. New finite element formulations were coded into a computer program. Several numerical examples were presented to show the validity of developed program.

The dynamic response analysis for large structures using finite element method requires a large amount of computational resources. This paper presents an efficient vibration analysis procedure by combining node-based substructuring reduction method with a response analysis scheme for structures with undamped, proportional or nonproportional damping. The iterative form of substructuring reduction scheme is derived to reduce the full eigenproblem and to calculate the dynamic responses. In calculating the time response, direct integration scheme is used because it can be applied directly to the reduced model. Especially for the non proportional damping matrix, the transformation matrices defined in the displacement space are used to reduce the system. The efficiency and the effectiveness of the present method are demonstrated through the numerical examples.
The impact behaviour and the impact-induced damage in laminated composite cylindrical shell subjected to transverse impact by a foreign object are studied using three-dimensional non-linear transient dynamic finite element formulation. A layered version of 20 noded hexahedral element incorporating geometrical non-linearity is developed based on total Langragian approach. Non-linear system of equations resulting from non-linear strain displacement relation and non-linear contact loading are solved using Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative method. Some example problems of graphite/epoxy cylindrical shell panels are considered with variation of impactor and laminate parameters and influence of geometrical non-linear effect on the impact response and the resulting damage is investigated.

The stiffness of 6-node isotropic element is stiffer than that of 8-node isotropic element of same configuration. This phenomenon was called 'Relative Stiffness Stiffening Phenomenon'. In this paper, an equation of sampling point modification which correct this phenomenon was derived for the composite plate, as well as an equation for an isotropic plate. The relative stiffness stiffening phenomena of an isotropic plate element could be corrected by modifying Gauss sampling points in the numerical integration of stiffness matrix. This technique could also be successfully applied to the static analyses of composite plate modeled by the 3-dimensional 16-node elements. We predicted theoretical errors of stiffness versus the number of layers that result from the reduction of numerical integration order. These errors coincide very well with the actual errors of stiffness. Therefore, we can choose full integration of reduced integration based upon the permissible error criterion and the number of layers by using the thoretically predicted error.

An overall feature to simulate composite behavior and to predict closed solution has been performed for the application to the stress analysis in a discontinuous composite solid. To obtain the internal field quantities of composite, the micromechanics analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) were implemented. For the numerical illustration, an aligned axisymmetric single fiber model has been employed to assess field quantities. Further, a micromechanics model to describe the elastic behavior of fiber or whisker reinforced metal matrix composites has been developed and the stress concentrations between reinforcements were investigated using the modified shear lag model with the comparions between reinforcements were investigated using the modified shear lag model with the comparison of finite element analysis (FEA). The rationale is based on the replacement of the matrix between fiber ends with the fictitious fiber to maintain the compatibility of displacement and traction. It was found that the new model gives a good agreement with FEA results in the small fiber aspect ratio regime as well as that in the large fiber aspect ratio regime. It was found that the proposed simulation methodology for stress analysis is applicable to the complicated inhomogeneous solid for the investigation of micromechanical behavior.
Hybrid simulation (HS) is a versatile tool for structural performance evaluation under dynamic loads. Although real structural responses are often multiple-directional owing to an eccentric mass/stiffness of the structure and/or excitations not along structural major axes, few HS in this field takes into account structural responses in multiple directions. Multi-directional loading is more challenging than uni-directional loading as there is a nonlinear transformation between actuator and specimen coordinate systems, increasing the difficulty of suppressing loading error. Moreover, redundant actuators may exist in multi-directional hybrid simulations of large-scale structures, which requires the loading strategy to contain ineffective loading of multiple actuators. To address these issues, lately a new strategy was conceived for accurate reproduction of desired displacements in bi-directional hybrid simulations (BHS), which is characterized in two features, i.e., iterative displacement command updating based on the Jacobian matrix considering nonlinear geometric relationships, and force-based control for compensating ineffective forces of redundant actuators. This paper performs performance validation and application of this new mixed loading strategy. In particular, virtual BHS considering linear and nonlinear specimen models, and the diversity of actuator properties were carried out. A validation test was implemented with a steel frame specimen. A real application of this strategy to BHS on a full-scale 2-story frame specimen was performed. Studies showed that this strategy exhibited excellent tracking performance for the measured displacements of the control point and remarkable compensation for ineffective forces of the redundant actuator. This strategy was demonstrated to be capable of accurately and effectively reproducing the desired displacements in large-scale BHS.
