  • The effectiveness of a retrofitting method for concrete columns with particular weaknesses is experimentally evaluated and presented in this paper. Structural deficiencies namely the inadequacy of transverse reinforcement and short length of lap splices are very common in columns found in structures built prior to the 1960s and 1970s. Recent earthquakes worldwide have caused severe damages and collapses of these structures. Nevertheless, the importance of improving the load transfer capacity between the deficiently lap-spliced bars is usually underestimated during the strengthening procedures applied in old buildings, though critical for the safety of the residents' lives. Thus, the seismic performance of the enhanced columns is frequently overestimated. The retrofitting approach presented herein involves reinforced concrete jacketing of the column sub-assemblages and welding of the lap-spliced bars to prevent the splice failure and conform to the provisions of modern design Codes. The cyclic lateral loading response of poorly confined original column specimens with insufficient lap splices and the seismic behavior of the retrofitted columns are compared. Test results clearly demonstrate that the retrofitting procedure followed is an effective way of significantly improving the seismic performance of substandard columns found in old buildings.

  • The corroded pier that has corrosion of the tranverse steel, main steel and lapsplice directly affects the seismic performance. The corrosion of the tranvese and main steel directly reduce the shear strength and bendig strength. If steel corrosion occurs in lap splice, the flexural strength and flexibility of existing corroded pier that are not seismic design are significantly reduced. In addition, as the axial force acting on the pier increase the shear strength. Considering these effects. In this stuydy, we cosidered steel corrosion, lap splice and axial force, for a reasonable evaluation of seismic-performance. It is confirmed that flexular failure occurs at pies where shear failure is expected to occur due to corrosion of reinforcement. These failure modes and their reason are analyzed, and necessary considerations are presented for seismic reinforcement.

  • Tensile strength (stress) of bar splice is important in the research of mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete structures-beam, column etc.- with bar splice. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the flexural behavior - deflection of beam specimens, strain of main bars - of reinforced concrete beam with Lock Joint Coupler. To make a comparative research, reinforced concrete beam specimens with normal deformed bar and lap splice are tested and analyzed. Test results, Comparing a deflection of three types flexural specimens, a flexural specimen with Lock Joint Coupler is 40% greater than the other flexural specimens. At the center of flexural specimen, the strain of main bar(D29) with lock joint coupler is 50% less, and vice versa, at the point of 14cm far from the center of flexural specimen, the strain of main bar(D29) with lock joint coupler is 9% larger than the strain of main bar(D29) which calculated using the classical flexure theory. A discords, between a deflection behavior of the flexural specimens and a strain of the main bar, are caused by the difference of strain between the lock joint coupler and main bar, near the lock joint coupler. So, additional research is need to verify as stated above discords.

  • Experimental results on lap splice performance of high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite(HPFRCC) with fiber types under repeated loading are reported. Fiber types were polypropylene(PP), polyethylene(PE) and hybrid fiber[polyethylene fiber+steel cord(PE+SC)]. The development length($l_d$) was calculated according to the relevant ACI code requirements for reinforcing bars in concrete. The current experimental results demonstrated clearly that the use of fibers in cementitious matrixes increases significantly the splice strength of reinforcing bars in tension. Also, the presence of fibers increased the number of cracks formed around the spliced bars.

  • Several experimental investigations have been carried out to study the behavior of reinforced concrete columns with short lap splices. However, very few analytical models have been developed for the analysis of such columns subjected to earthquakes. As nonlinear analysis procedures become more common in practice (such as those outlined in the Guidelines for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the United States), the need for an accurate and reliable representation of the nonlinear response of strength degrading systems becomes more important. In this study, an analytical model for estimating the complete response of reinforced concrete columns with short lap splices is presented. The model is based on local bond stress-slip relationships and is validated against independent experimental data from cyclic loading tests on reinforced concrete columns with typical construction details of the 1960s. In this paper a simple equation for calculating the bar stress at splice failure is presented. Use of the proposed equation resulted in excellent agreement between the measured and calculated strength at splice failure.

  • Pseudo dynamic test is an on-line computer control method to achieve the realism of shaking table test with the economy and versatility of the conventional quasi-static approach. Pseudo dynamic tests of four full-size RC bridge piers have been carried out to investigate their seismic performance. For the purpose of precise evaluation, the experimental investigation was conducted to study the seismic performance of the real size specimen, which is constructed for highway bridge piers in Korean peninsula. Since it is believed that Korea belongs to the moderate seismicity region, three test specimens were designed in accordance with limited ductility design concept. Another one test specimen was nonseismically designed according to a conventional code. Important test parameters were transverse reinforcement and lap splicing. Lap splicing was frequently used in the plastic hinge region of many bridge columns. Furthermore, the seismic design code is not present about lap splice in Korean Roadway Bridge Design Code. The results show that specimens designed according to the limited ductility design concept exhibit higher seismic resistance. Specimens with longitudinal steel lap splice in the plastic hinge region appeared to significantly fail at low ductility level.

  • Before the implementation of the 1992 seismic design provisions in Korea, longitudinal steels of RC bridge piers were practically lap-spliced in the plastic hinge region. Experimental investigation was made to evaluate the seismic performance of RC bridge pier specimens in a flexure/shear mode. Six circular test specimens in an aspect ratio of 2.5 (600mm in diameter) were made with test parameters confinement ratio, lap splices, and retrofit FRP materials. They were damaged under a series of artificial earthquakes with 0.22g PGA, being compatible in Korean peninsula, through the pseudo-dynamic test. Probable damages were assessed by the Park and Ang damage index. Approximate 0.1 and 0.3 damage indices were obtained for RC specimens without lap splice and with lap splice, respectively. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged test columns were laterally actuated under inelastic reversal cyclic loadings simultaneously under a constant axial load. Through curvature measurements, residual seismic performance was evaluated for test specimens. Test results show that RC pier specimens with lap-spliced appeared to fail at low ductility, but significant improvement was obtained for the ductility of these specimens if externally wrapped with FRP.

  • This study is performed to investigate the behavior of multi-column piers and to evaluate the seismic performance. In this study, 3 types of scale model piers with 2-column are designed and tested by quasi-static load in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Each type of model consisting of 2 specimens has different reinforcement details in the lap splice of longitudinal bars and amount of transverse reinforcements. This paper reports that relatively large amount of ductility can be achieved by providing sufficient lap-splice length and transverse reinforcements with end hook even if longitudinal bars are lap spliced in the base of pier. But because multi-column piers have small longitudinal stiffness, careful consideration is needed in case of multi-span continuous bridges.

  • The code provisions on lap splices are critically assessed in the light of 203 beams without transverse reinforcement and 278 beams with transverse reinforcement. For comparison, the provisions given in the ACI 318, Eurocode 2, and TS 500 Codes are considered. The ACI Committee 408 recommended provision and a new proposal are also taken into account throughout the assessment. The comparison with real beam tests where the splice region was subjected to constant moment indicates that current provisions in the Codes do not agree acceptably with test results. The steel stress prediction graphs calculated by means of the Code provisions show high scatter and remain unsafe especially for test data without transverse reinforcement. Both the recent recommended provision by ACI Committee 408 and a new design expression proposed by the author have much less scatter with fewer unsafe predictions. The simplified design provision proposed by ACI Committee 408 does not yield similar results to that of the advanced design provision proposed by the same committee and therefore it could conveniently be replaced with the simpler equation proposed by the author.

  • The bridge columns with lap-splice reinforcements in earthquake suffered a brittle bond-slip failure due to the deterioration of lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement without developing its flexural capacity or ductility. In this case, such a brittle failure can be controlled by the seismic retrofit using FRP wrapping. The retrofitted columns using FRP laminated circular tube showed significant improvement in seismic performance due to FRP's confinement effect. This paper presents the circumferential confinement effect of existing circular bridge pier strengthened with FRP wrapping for poor lap-splice details. The effects on the confinement of FRP wrapping, such as gap lengths between footing and FRP, fiber orientations, and thicknesses of FRP, were investigated by Quasi-static experiments.
