  • The preconcentration and determination of trace Cd(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ) and Zn(Ⅱ) in water samples were studied by the precipitate flotation using La(OH)3 as a coprecipitant. The analytes were quantitatively coprecipitated by adding 3.0 mL of 0.1 M La(Ⅲ) solution in a 1,000 mL water sample and adjusting the pH to 9.5 with NaOH solution. After the addition of the 1:8 mixed surfactant solution of each 0.1% sodium oleate and sodium lauryl sulfate, the solution was stirred with a magnetic stirrer for 10 minutes. The precipitates were floated to the surface by bubbling with nitrogen gas and collected in a small sampling bottle. The precipitates were dissolved in nitric acid and then the solutions were diluted to 25.00 mL with a deionized water. The analytes were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. This procedure was applied to the waste water analysis. This technique was simple, convenient and especially rapid for the analysis of a large volume of sample. And also, from the recoveries of better than 92% which were obtained from real samples, this method could be judged to be applicable to the preconcentration and quantitative determination of trace elements in water samples.

  • This study aimed to prepare a W/O nonionic microemulsion system(MEs) consisting of OP-4[polyoxyethylene(4) nonylphenol], OP-7[polyoxyethylene(7) nonylphenol], 1-hexanol, D2EHPA, kerosene and HCl solution and applied to the extraction of La(III) from chloride aqueous solution within the polysulfone hollow fiber contactor (HFC),laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the recovery of La(III) using as-prepared microemulsion from the simulation wastewater containing La(III),Al(III) and Fe(III). The right weight ratio(Rs) of OP-4 to OP-7 was firstly confirmed through determination of the solubilization capacity of HCl solution(W0,HCl) in microemulsion, the effect of several factors such as the HCl concentration, temperature and effective extraction time on the extraction efficiency of La(III) was discussed. Results showed that the acceptable Rs was 4:6 to prepare the W/O MEs. The extraction yield of La(III) increased with the increasing of HCl concentration, temperature and effective extraction time and reaches to 97.3% while using five-stage modules. The recovery yield of La(III) from simulation La-bearing wastewater was 90.6%.

  • In this paper, rare earth element (REE)/polyester composites were designed with lanthanum oxide, gadolinium oxide, and lutetium oxide as ray shielding agents, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as the base. Monte Carlo simulation was carried out using FLUKA software. We found that the radiation protection performance of the composite is affected by the type and amount of REE; a higher amount of REE equated to a better radiation protection performance of the composite. When the thickness of the composite and total thickness of the REE is constant, the number of superimposed layers inside the composite does not affect its shielding performance. Compared with a single-type REE/PET composite, a mixed-type REE/PET composite has a wider range of γ-ray absorption and better radiation protection performance. When the mass ratio of PET to REE is 2:8 and different types of REE are mixed with equal mass, several 0.2 cm-thick mixed-type REE/PET composites can shield >70% of 60 and 80 KeV γ-rays.

  • La modified lead zirconate titanate ceramics (Pb0.92La0.08)(Zr0.95Ti0.05)O3 = PLZT-8/95/5 were prepared using the conventional solid state reaction method in order to investigate the complex impedance characteristics of the PLZT-8/95/5 ceramic according to temperature. The complex impedance in the PLZT-8/95/5 ceramic was measured over a temperature range of 30~550 ℃ at several frequencies. The complex dielectric constant anomaly of the phase transition was observed near TU1 = 179 ℃ and TU2 = 230 ℃. A remarkable diffuse dielectric constant anomalous behaviour of the complex dielectric constant was found between 100 ℃ and 550 ℃. The complex impedance spectra below and above TU1 and TU2 were fitted by the superposition of two Cole-Cole types of impedance relaxations. The fast component in the higher frequency region may be due to ion migration in the bulk, and the slow component in the lower frequency region is interpreted to be the formation and migration of ions at the grain boundary or electrode/crystal interfacial polarization.

  • An optimum route to synthesis the W-based composite powders with homogeneous dispersion of oxide nanoparticles was investigated. The La2O3 dispersed W powder was synthesized by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis using ammonium metatungstate hydrate and lanthanum nitrate. The dispersion of Y2O3 nanoparticles in W- La2O3 powder was carried out by a polymer addition solution method using yttrium nitrate. XPS and TEM analyses for the composite powder showed that the nano-sized La2O3 and Y2O3 particles were well distributed in W powder. This study suggests that the combination processing of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis and polymeric additive solution is a promising way to synthesis W-based composite powders.

  • In this study, a proposal for revision of HSK Code was established on legally designated minerals and national stockpile minerals. It is difficult to exactly identify trade balances of minerals, such as lithium ore, rare earth ore, serpentine, kidney stone in legally designated minerals and ingot of indium, ferro-tungsten, ingot of antimony, granule of selenium, gallium, lanthanum oxide, cerium carbonate in national stockpile minerals because HSK Codes of them were not allocated separately. Furthermore, specific use, standard, component, type of products cannot be exactly identified in current HSK Code system. Therefore, it is makes rule to separately manage minerals which were managed by government such as legally designated minerals and national stockpile minerals. However, a proposal for revision of HSK Code system was established to comply with international standard(HS Code) and the items over a certain size(amounts : over 50 mil.$, volumes : over 5000 ton) were selected as revised subjects. Moreover hierarchies between HSK Codes were considered.

  • The lanthanum-modified lead titanate (PLT) thin films on (100) cleaved MgO single crystal substrate have been prepared by RF magnetron sputtering method using PbO-rich target with varing La contents. The substrate temperature, working pressure, $Ar/O_{2}$, and RF power density of PLT thin films were $580^{\circ}C$ 10mTorr, 10/1, and $1.7W/cm^{2}$, respectively. In these conditions, the c-axis growth and tetragonality of the PLT thin films decreased for addition of La content and the PLT thin films showed diffuse phase transition from high temperature XRD patterns. The infrared sensor was fabricated. The remanent polarization was above $1.71{\mu}C/cm^{2}$ and the pyroelectric voltage was above 500mV with 10:1 signal to noise ratio.

  • The Charge Trap Flash (CTF) memory device is a replacement candidate for the NAND Flash device. In this study, Pt/$Al_2O_3/La_2O_3/SiO_2$/Si multilayer structures with lanthanum oxide charge trap layers were fabricated for nonvolatile memory device applications. Aluminum oxide films were used as blocking oxides for low power consumption in program/erase operations and reduced charge transports through blocking oxide layers. The thicknesses of $SiO_2$ were from 30 $\AA$ to 50 $\AA$. From the C-V measurement, the largest memory window of 1.3V was obtained in the 40 $\AA$ tunnel oxide specimen, and the 50 $\AA$ tunnel oxide specimen showed the smallest memory window. In the cycling test for reliability, the 30 $\AA$ tunnel oxide sample showed an abrupt memory window reduction due to a high electric field of 9$\sim$10MV/cm through the tunnel oxide while the other samples showed less than a 10% loss of memory window for $10^4$ cycles of program/erase operation. The I-V measurement data of the capacitor structures indicated leakage current values in the order of $10^{-4}A/cm^2$ at 1V. These values are small enough to be used in nonvolatile memory devices, and the sample with tunnel oxide formed at $850^{\circ}C$ showed superior memory characteristics compared to the sample with $750^{\circ}C$ tunnel oxide due to higher concentration of trap sites at the interface region originating from the rough interface.

  • Spinel/zirconia-glass composites prepared by melt-infiltration were fabricated to investigate the effect of zirconia addition on mechanical and optical properties of the composites. The infiltration distance was parabolic with respect to time as described by the Washburn equation and the penetration rate constant, K, decreased due to the reduction in pore size as the amount of zirconia rose. Although the optimum strength(308 MPa) of the Spinel/zirconia-glass composites was observed when the zirconia was added up to 20 wt%, K and transmittance decreased as the zirconia content rose. In conclusion, it suggested that the positive effect of strength as a result of the addition of zirconia was not effective.

  • The spinel was calcined at temperatures in the range of $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$ with $100^{\circ}C$ interval to evaluate the effect of calcination temperature on mechanical properties of spinel-glass dental composites. Although the average particle size of spinel calcined at temperatures from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$ was within 2.8~3.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$, the spinel calcined at $1300^{\circ}C$ was 4.66 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to abnormal grain growth. Shrinkage and pore size of the spinel preform decreased and increased, respectively, as calcination temperature increased, indicating that the calcination temperature was significant to the powder compaction and the densification of the composites as a result of particle size and distribution. The optimum strength and the fracture toughness of the composite calcined at $1200^{\circ}C$ were 284$\pm$40 MPa, 2.5$\pm$0.1 MPaㆍ$m^{1/2}$ respectively. Optical experimental results showed that transmittance of the spinel-glass composite in the visible region was twice higher than that of the alumina-glass composite, suggesting that the spinel-glass composites possessed better aesthetic properties for all-ceramic dental crown application.
