Wetland transformation through Water Resource Users Association; The case of Rwamuthambi Sub Catchment area, Kenya

  • Many studies conducted in Kenya regarding water resource governance have focused on the mandate of Water Resource Users Associations (WRUAs) with less attention being accorded to their effectiveness in conservation of wetlands. This study assessed the effectiveness of WRUA committees, and challenges faced in conservation of Rwamuthambi Sub-catchment. The study employed exploratory descriptive research design. Data was collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, observations and review of secondary data. Chi square and descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. The survey results revealed that only 15% of WRUA committee understood water resources management while 35% were aware of relevant legislations. Factors of wetland degradation showed significant association with existence of WRUA (χ2 (4, N=180) = 20.46, p< .01) where (χ2- chi square (degrees of freedom, N = sample size) = chi-square statistic value, p = p value), although WRUA contributions were perceived differently per agro-ecological zone (χ2 (8, N=147) = 15.51, p>.05). Challenges unearthed were inadequate financial and human resources, lack of understanding, ineffective collaborative governance, poor support from county government and private ownership of riparian land reserve. There is need for WRUAs to embrace collaborative governance for effective conservation of wetlands. Integration of sub catchment management plan with county land use plans and policy review is also required.

Improvement for Environmental Conservation Value Assessment Map (ECVAM) of National Land in Korea

  • This study was performed for improving the Environmental Conservation Value Assessment Map (ECVAM) of National Land in Korea. The ECVAM items are composed of legal assessment and environmental/ecological assessment. An assessment method applied to ECVAM is basically an overlay method for environmental/ecological assessment items. The purpose of this study is to offer complement items of the ECVAM by examining assessment items. For this, our study was preceded as follows; In this study we assessed the ECVAM by 4 kinds of method. Method I is Comparing overlapping areas of each assessment items Grade 1, 2 and Permission of each assessment items'duplication, Method 2 is Grade 1, 2 areas by only singular assessment items, Method 3 is Only Grade 1 areas of Method 2 and Method 4 is Only Grade 2 areas of Method 2. As results, Method1 showed 93.4% of diameter Grade II(standard for stability), forest diameter item was accounted for 99.9% by Method 2, Method 3 showed 95.7% of forest diameter and forest density was accounted for 66.4% by Method 4. From now on, this study will contribute to reduce the complexity in the process of manufacturing ECVAM of National Land, and to raise the pliability in the process of managing and updating this map.

Prediction of Species Richness of Breeding Birds by Analysis of Land Cover at Seongnam City, Korea

  • This study was conducted to develop the predictive model for species richness of breeding birds by multivariate analysis of land covers (percentage value of each cover in 300 $\times$ 300m grid) including water area (WA), urbanized area (UA), green area (GA), forest area (FA) and agricultural area (AA) at Seongnam City in Korea. Fifty-nine species of birds were mapped on 155 grids in size of 300 $\times$ 300 m from 2000 to 2001. Species richness of breeding birds was significantly regressed ($R^2=0.85$, n=155) by estimates of WA ($4.59{\pm}1.13$, P<0.0001), UA ($6.50{\pm}0.86$, P<0.0001), GA ($7.11{\pm}1.25$, P<0.0001), FA ($8.51{\pm}0.62$, P<0.0001), and AA ($4.59{\pm}1.13$, P<0.0001). In validation of model, the results show no significant difference between predicted value of species richness and observed one. Developed model can be used as a predictive model of species richness of birds for selecting the proper location of corridors and parks in urban area.

Bioactive peptides-derived from marine by-products: development, health benefits and potential application in biomedicine

  • Increased fisheries products have raised by-products that are discarded due to low economic value. In addition, marine by-products are still rich in protein and nutritional value that have biological activities and give benefits to human health. Meanwhile, there is raised pressure for sustainability practices in marine industries to reduce waste and minimize the detrimental effect on the environment. Thus, valorization by-products through bioactive peptide mining are crucial. This review focus on various ways to obtain bioactive peptides from marine by-products through protein hydrolysis, for instance chemical hydrolysis (acid and based), biochemical hydrolysis (autolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis), microbial fermentation, and subcritical water hydrolysis. Nevertheless, these processes have benefits and drawbacks which need to be considered. This review also addresses various biological activities that are favorable in pharmaceutical industries, including antioxidant, antihypertensive, anticancer, anti-obesity, and other beneficial bioactivities. In addition, some potential marine resources of Indonesia for the marine biopeptide from their by-product or undesired marine commodities would be addressed as well.

  • 동력경운깅가 일반 경사지에서 견인주행하는 경우 견인주행성능과 주행특성을 구명하기 위하여 토양의 종류 및 상태는 일정하게 하고 지면의 기하학적 조건과 견인주행속도 및 견인하중을 변수로 하여 외부동력전달계의 시점인 좌우차륜과 토양간에 발생하는 차륜구동력 및 굴름정항과 Engine에서 구동륜까지 내부전달계를 통하여 전달된 동력의 이론치와 실험치와의 부합여부를 검정하고 부가적으로 동력경운기가 경사지기계화의 동력기로써의 가능성여부와 문제점을 찾으려한다.

경지정리사업의 확장편익-비용분석 - 충남서산시 지곡지구를 중심으로 - (An Extended Benefit-Cost Analysis of Land Consolidation and On-farm Development Project -With Respect to Jigok Land Consolidation and On-farm Development Project in Seosan, Chungnam Province, Korea-)

  • The economic feasibility analysis including benefit-cost ratio and internal rate of return of a land consolidation and on-farm development project was mainly depended upon the direct benefits and costs arising during project life. Therefore the projects were neglected in allocating the government's financial funds and loans on account of the low economic rate of return of the project. Accordingly the extended benefit-cost analysis method should be introduced and adapted to cover not only the benefit s such as non-market values of environmental and food security fun ct ions of the project but also market values of the project outputs. The main purposes of this study are (1) to prepare a guide line for economic feasibility analysis based on the IBRD and ADB guidelines, (2) to estimate the benefits from productivity increase, labor saving, savings of O&M cost of farm mechanization and project facilities, savings of farmer's burden for their public health, increasing environmental and public functional value of paddy fields, improving food security condition and formation of peaceful and uncontroversial rural society by implementing the land consolidation and on-farm development, (3) to introduce the newly adapted analytical method as the extended benefit cost analysis which could make possible to be included the values of non-market goods such as the food security and the environmental public function of paddy fields. To carry out this study, the existing publications on the guidelines for economic agricultural projects were reviewed and consultation was made with a For the post evaluation study of the land consolidation and on-farm development project, field survey in Jigok and other comparative area were made to get available information. According to the project completion report, Jigok land consolidation and on-farm development project has 55ha of benefit area out of 69ha of gross area. The project was started in November 11th, 2000 and completed october 30th, 2001. The total project costs were amounted to 2,548 million won and the annual project benefits were estimated at 335million won evaluated by domestic market prices. The ERR(Economic Rate of Return) and SRR(Social Rate of Return) of the project based on the shadow pricing system were estimated at 4.4% and 16% respectively. On the other hand, the ERR and SRR based on the domestic market value system were amounted to 6.37% and 14.62%. In conclusion, Korean land consolidation and on-farm development projects have not carried out from the view point of economic rate of return under shadow pricing system but from the view point of domestic pricing system. For the future feasibility studies on land consolidation projects have to be carried out including the non-market values as environmental and food security function of the projects.

야간광과 남한의 시도별 개별 공시지가 총액의 상관관계 연구 - DMSP OLS 자료를 중심으로 (A Study of the Correlation Between Nighttime Light and Individual Land Price by Province in South Korea, Using DMSP OLS Data)

  • Operational Linescan System (OLS) 센서는 Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) 프로그램을 통해 발사된 위성체에 탑재된 센서로, 야간에 방출되는 가시광 및 적외선대의 빛을 감지한다. 여러 연구자들의 연구를 통해 OLS 센서를 통해 획득한 야간광 자료와 국내 총생산(gross domestic product, GDP) 값에는 높은 상관관계가 존재함이 밝혀졌다. 본 연구에서는 경제 발전과 관련된 다양한 지표 중 하나인 개별 공시지가 총액과 야간광 자료의 상관관계에 대한 연구를 진행하였다. 연구 결과 대다수의 시, 도에서 0.7 이상의 상관계수로 높은 상관관계를 보였으며 남한 전체의 개별 공시지가 총액과 야간광 자료 간에도 상관계수는 0.7837로 높은 상관관계를 보였다. 그러나 타 시, 도와 달리 서울특별시의 경우 야간광과 개별 공시지가 총액은 상관계수가 0.5648로 낮은 상관계수를 보였는데, 이는 서울특별시의 digital number (DN) 값은 OLS 센서의 최대 DN 값에 가깝게 나타나 그 이상의 변화를 나타낼 수 없는 것이 원인으로 분석되었다. 본 연구를 통해 향후 공시지가가 체계적으로 정리되지 않은 지역의 공시지가를 파악하고, 이를 이용한 지역의 토지이용 변화 등을 분석하는 데 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다.

유동인구가 상가권리금과 임대료에 미치는 영향 -서초·강남구 상권을 중심으로- (The Effect of Floating Location on Goodwill and Rent of Retail Shop -Focused on Seocho·Gangnam Commercial Area-)

  • 본 연구는 권리금에서의 입지가치(바닥권리금)를 개념화하고 실증하기 위해 그동안 권리금을 결정하는 주요한 요인으로 지적되었던 유동인구에 초점을 두어, 유동인구의 규모와 구성이 상가권리금에 미치는 영향을 분석하고자 하였다. '바닥권리금'은 권리금 상승(거품)의 주요 요인임에도, (현(現))평가방법에서는 상가임대료의 입지가치와 다를 바 없이 평가되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 임대료의 입지가치 평가와 동일한 고정적 입지가치와 달리 권리금은 해당 상가 주변 유동인구(수요층)에 따라 급격히 변할 수 있음을 가정하고 이를 실증하고자 하였다. 실증 분석은 2013년 서초 강남구 일대 188개 상가(일반음식점, 휴게음식점, 주류점, 일반판매, 오락스포츠미용업)의 컨설팅 자료를 활용하였다. 분석 결과 다음과 같은 시사점을 도출하였다. 분석결과 권리금과 임대료는 양의 상관관계를 가지고 있으며 비탄력적인 속성을 가지고 있으나 평가 체계와 요인에는 차이가 있었다. 선형회귀모형을 통해 분석한 결과 권리금과 임대료 모두 건물특성, 유동적 입지요인, 고정적 입지요인의 순으로 영향력이 큰 것으로 나타났으나, 유동적 입지요인의 영향력은 임대료보다 권리금에서 더 크게 나타났다. 또한 임대료에는 건물노후도, 버스정류장 등 고정적 입지가치가 유의한 영향요인으로 나타났으나, 권리금에는 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 이와 같은 결과는 권리금에서의 입지가치 분석 시에도 시 공간적 개념인 평가시점의 유동적 입지가치가 고려되어야한다는 것을 의미한다. 임대료는 계약종료 시까지 고정되나, 권리금은 유동인구 증가 등 새로운 입지가치 요인에 따라 유동적으로 반영되기 때문이다. 이러한 시차에서 오는 유동적 입지가치의 변화를 임대인은 임대료에 반영시키려 하고, 임차인은 권리금으로 보상받으려 하기 때문에 분쟁이 나타나는 것으로 이해할 수 있기 때문이다. 따라서 이와 같은 분쟁 해결을 위해서는 향후 지속적인 권리금 데이터의 축적과 함께 객관적 평가체계에 대한 연구가 필요한 시점이다.

폐목재 혼합에 따른 하수슬러지 탈수성 및 발열량 특성 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Dewaterability and Calorific Value of Sewage Sludge by Mixing Waste Wood)

  • The land treatment of sewage sludge is necessary because sewage sludge is increasing year by year. Therefore the research of sewage sludge solidification is underway as one of the land treatment methods. However, the problem with existing sewage sludge solidification is that the moisture content of sewage sludge is high and the dewaterability is low. Because of high drying cost the efficiency of energy production is low and the calorific value is insufficient. So the disposer is supplied with a filtration and caloric aid for improving dewaterability and calorific value. In this study, it is aimed to improve the fuel value of sewage sludge by confirming the feasibility of waste wood as a filtration and caloric aid. The dewaterability was measured by CST-test and the calorific value was measured by bomb calorimeter. As a result the dewaterability and calorific value are improved in all of the samples. The dewaterability was improved as the waste wood was added in the sewage sludge. By adjusting the waste wood adding rate into the sewage sludge the dewaterability and calorific value of sewage sludge will be improved. This study confirmed possibility of the waste wood used as filtration and caloric aid.
