Most of the lakes in Korea are artificial, and their limnological characteristics are significantly different from those of natural lakes in other countries. In this study, the relationship between trophic state parameters was investigated, based on summer average data of the upper layer, in 81 lakes in Korea, 2013-2017. Compared with trends of foreign natural lakes, chlorophyll a (Chl.a) concentration was slightly lower at the same total phosphorus (TP) concentration, and transparency (Secchi depth, SD) was noticeably lower at the same Chl.a concentration. This is because of excessive allochthonous loading of non-algal material during the monsoon period, and the reduction in phosphorus availability to algal growth, by light limitation and short hydraulic residence time. Considering these characteristics, we suggested site-specific thresholds of trophic state classification for Chl.a, TP and SD, based on annual average data at the upper layer of lakes ($3-10{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ of Chl.a measured by UNESCO method; $13-33{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ of TP; 1.6-3.2 m of SD for mesotrophic state class, respectively). The threshold value of TP for each trophic state class, corresponded to the upper value of previously reported range, and that of SD was out of the range. We suggested applying only TP and Chl.a in assessment of trophic state of lakes in Korea, excluding SD.
The physico-chemical factors, the distribution of chlorophyll and the primary production of the lakes Hwajinpo, Yongrangho, Chunchonho, Uiamho, Soyangho and Changjamot have been studied in order to make ecological comparison among these lakes during summer stagnation period of August to September of 1973. On the basis of the characteristics of these lakes, the lake types have been discussed. Thermocline is observed at 3-4m zone in the lake Changjamot and 4-5m zone in the lake Yongrangho. In the case of lake Hwajinpo and impoundments, the distinct thermal stratification is not observed at the summer stagnation period. As to vertical distribution of dissolved oxygen, a positive heterograde curve is obtained in the lakes Hwajinpo and Yongrangho. In the lake Changjamot the typical clinograde curve and the oxygen depletion in hypolimnion are observed. In the case of impoundments, however, the orthograde curve is observed in the lakes Chunchonho and Uiamho. While in the lake Soyangho, any stratification of the disssolved oxygen is not found. In the brackish lakes, such as lakes Hwajinpo and Yongragho, the salinity of hypolimnion is found to be much higher than that of epilimnion. In the lake Hwajinpo, the salinity of hypolimnion is exhibited 32.7$\textperthousand$, which is nearly the same as sea water. The distribution of nitrogenous compounds and phosphates is found to be high in the lake Changjmot. The silicate is also found in high concentration in the lake Chunchonho, and the distribution of nutrients in the brackish lakes is generally low. As to the vertical distribution of chlorophyll level, the lake Changjamot shows a stratum type and the brackish lakes L-type stratification. In the impoundments, lakes Chunchonho and Uiamho appear to be homogeneous type. Seasonal variation of chlorophyll level in the lake Changjamot is examined from January to September 1973. The vertical distribution of chlorophyll during the period of circulation from January to April is homogeneous type and is stratum type thereafter. The maximum chlorophyll level is 277.4mg/$m^2$ on June 23 and the pattern of seasonal variation of chlorophyll level is comparable to the type of eutrophy. The horizontal distribution of chlorophyll level is studied in the brackish lakes, Hwajinpo and Yongrangho. The pattern of distribution is found to be an irregular type. On the basis of measurements of primary production by means of the carbon-14 method and the distribution of chlorophyll level, it is concluded that the interior part of the lake Hwajinpo and Changjamot are eutrophic and the exterior part of the lake Hwajinpo, lake Yongrangho and the impoundments, lake Uiambo and Soyangho are mesotrophic.
This paper included the preventive measures and the prospect of lake eutrophication in korea. All pollution control techniques must be applied after the characteristics of the lakes are surveyed sufficlenty, Most of Korean lakes are the large man-made ones and their characteristics are different from those of natural ones in foreign nation. Some of many techniques for natural lakes can be applied in our lakes also, others must be revised. Lake water quality can be ameliorated only by systematic researches and technologies because lake ecosystem is very complicated. It is impossible to improve water quality with fragmentary and shortterm projects.

The phytoplankton community in the estuarine system is affected by changes of physicochemical factors easily. The present study analyzed phytoplankton community distribution and similarity, in addition to exploring factors influencing variations in phytoplankton community structure in three lakes located in the Yeongsan River estuary from March 2014 to November 2017. We carried out non-multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and random forest analysis (RF) for comparing the pattern of phytoplankton distribution and the relationship between phytoplankton distribution and environmental variables. Similarity Percentage (SIMPER) and Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) were performed to figure out the similarity of phytoplankton community at each site of three lakes. From NMDS, Phytoplankton community distribution differed between Yeongsan and Gumho lakes, and the factors influencing the distribution of phytoplankton communities across the three lakes were water temperature, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen (T-N), nitrate-N (NO3-N), and conductivity. NO3-N was a key factor influencing phytoplankton community structure in the three lakes based on RF. A total of 24 species were identified as indicator species in the three lakes studied, with the highest species numbers observed in Yeongsan Lake (13) and the lowest observed in Yeongam Lake (2). According to SIMPER and ANOSIM results, the phytoplankton community in Yeongsan and Yeongam lakes were similar, and they differed from those in Gumho Lake. In addition, the phytoplankton community structure varied across the study sites in the three lakes, indicating that water channels across the lakes a minor influence phytoplankton community distribution.
Water quality data of 81 lakes in Korea, 2013 ~ 2017 were analyzed. Most water quality parameters showed left-skewed distribution, while dissolved oxygen showed normal distribution. pH and dissolved oxygen showed a positive correlation with organic matter and nutrients, which appeared to be a nonsense correlation mediated by the algae. The ratio of $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$ to CBOD was 21 % and 52 % in the freshwater lakes, respectively. TOC concentration appeared to be underestimated by the UV digestion method, when salinity exceeds $700{\mu}S\;cm^{-1}$. In terms of nitrogen/phosphorus ratio, the limiting factor for algal growth seemed to be phosphorus in most of the lakes. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ increased acutely with decrease of N/P ratio. However, it seemed to be a nonsense correlation mediated by phosphorus concentration, since the N/P ratio depended on phosphorus. The N/P ratio of brackish lakes was lower than that of the freshwater, at the same concentration of phosphorus. It is worth examining denitrification that occurs, in bottom layer and sediment, during saline stratification. $Chl.{\alpha}$ concentration decreased in the form of a power function with increase of mean depth. The primary reason is that deep lakes are mainly at the less-disturbed upstream. However, it is necessary to investigate the effect of sediment, on water quality in shallow lakes. Light attenuation in the upper layer, was dominated by tripton (non-algal suspended solids) absorption/scattering (average relative contribution of 39 %), followed by CDOM (colored dissolved organic matter) (average 37 %) and $Chl.{\alpha}$ (average 21 %).
Hydrological and biological studies on ecosystems of the lakes 'etang de Berre' and 'etang de Vaime', the four rivers flowing into these lakes, and the Mediterranean Sea are carried out during the whole two-year period. The phytoplankton population of the lakes 'etang de Berre' and 'etang de Vaine' is larger than that of the seawater or freshwater populations of four neighbouring rivers. This is due to the increasing nutriments such as phosphate, nitrate, and silicate flowing into the lakes from the four rivers. The superfluous phytoplanktons in the lakes flow into the Mediterranean Sea via the Caronte Canal. Phytoplanktons multiplicated by phosphate of lake 'etang de Berre' can produce 10,160 tons of assimilated carbon per year, and those multiplicated by nitrate produce 18,450 tons of assimilated carbon per year. According to Steeman Nielsen's primary production estimation, phytoplanktons produce about 45,000 tons of carbon per year through assimilation in lake'4tang de Berre' and 10,000 tons of carbon per year in lake 'etang de Vaime'. The amount of carbon produced by phytoplanktons and the amount of phosphate, and nitrate are different according to the sea, river, and estuary.
Elemental cellular stoichiometry of natural phytoplankton communities was examined in six large dam reservoirs in the Han River system. Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents of the phytoplankton-dominated seston from Lake Soyang was higher than that from other lakes. Phosphorus (P) content showed slight variations among six lakes in the range of $0.04{\sim}0.18{\mu}mol$ P mg $DW^{-1}$. The phosphorus concentrations of lake water showed obvious positive relationship with P and C contents of the phytoplankton-dominated seston. In all six lakes, N:P ratios and C:P ratios in the phytoplankton-dominated seston were more than 23 and 133 respectively, indicating the phytoplankton communities in six lakes have been exposed in phosphorus limited condition. The relative abundance of diatoms showed significant negative correlation with C, N, P contents of the phytoplankton-dominated seston and that of cyanobacteria showed significant positive correlation. Elemental stoichiometry of diatoms-dominated seston showed distinctive less content than that of cyanobacteria-dominated seston. The cellular N:P ratios of diatoms- and cyanobacteria-dominated seston indicate that both main classes of phytoplankton in six lakes are in phosphorus deficiency. Elemental stoichiometry of the phytoplankton-dominated seston in this study could be used for the further ecological stoichiometric studies in six lakes.
Some aspects of limno-biology of the five dammed lakes such as Tamyang, Changsong, Kwangju, Naju, and Youngsan Lake along the Yongsan River were investigated from June 1986 to July 1988 for the comparison on the lentic ecosystems in relation to the fish fauna. Sixty four fish species representing 48 genera and 21 families of fishes were collected in these dammed areas, which included 29 species of the family Cyprinidea and 40 speaies of the primary fresh-water fishes. Among, these, 12 species such as Rhodeus Acheilognothus yamatsutae, A canathorhodeus gracilis, Sarcocheilichthys nigripinis morii, S. variegatus wakiyae, Gnathopogon strigatus, Squalidus gracilis majimae, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Cobitis longicorpus sp, Liobagrus mediadiposalis and Odontobutis platycephala are enddmic to Korea. Leiocassis nitidus and Gasterosteus aculeatus which occur in these water areas take note of the zooge rographic study of Korea. The fish species in each of the dammed lakes is in proportion of the scale of the lakes such as 32 species in Thamyang, 40 species in Changsong, 24 species in Kwangju, 35 species in Jaju, and 52 species in Yongsan Lake. The dominant fish species of the 4 upper dammed lakes of Thamyang, Changsong, Kwangju and Naju Lake are Zacco platypus and Rhodeus uyekii, while those of Youngsan Lake are Hemiculter eigenmanni and Carassius auratus. This difference of fish species of those areas suggests that the upper damed lake differ from the lower dammed lakes in the habitable condition of fishes. The migratory fish species have significantly declined and will continue to decline in both population size and number of species in the dammed lakes in near future as a result of the dam construction barriers in the river estuary. The major migratory fishes of this water area are as follows; Anguilla japonica, Plecoglossus altivelis, Hypomesus olidus, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Konosirus Punctatus, Coilia ectens, Hemirhampus sajori, Mugil cephalus. Acanthogobius flavimanus, and Takifugu ocellatus.
The infection status of digenetic trematode metacercariae (DTM) was investigated in fishes from coastal lakes in Gangwon-do, the Republic of Korea (Korea). All fishes collected in 5 lakes were examined with the artificial digestion method. More than 10 species, i.e., Metagonimus spp., Pygidiopsis summa, Centrocestus armatus, Metorchis orientalis, M. taiwanensis, Clinostomum complanatum, Echinostoma spp., Stictodora spp., Diplostomum sp. and Diplostomid No. 1. by Morita (1960), of DTM were detected in fishes from 5 coastal lakes in Gangwon-do. Metagonimus spp. metacercariae were found in 52 (41.3%) out of 126 sea rundace, Tribolodon hakonensis, from 5 lakes, and their density was 14.6 per fish infected. P. summa metacercariae were detected in 48 (84.2%) out of 57 mullets from 5 lakes, and their density was 316 per fish infected. C. armatus metacercariae were detected in 7 (14.6%) T. hakonensis and 3 (15.0%) Tridentiger brevispinis from Hyang-ho, and 5 (19.2%) Acanthogobius flavimanus from Gyeongpo-ho. Stictodora spp. metacercariae were found in 4 fish species, i.e., Tridentiger obscurus, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, Chelon haematocheilus, and Acanthogobius lactipes, from Gyeongpo-ho. Total 15 C. complanatum metacercariae were detected in 2 (9.1%) crucian carp, Carassius auratus, from Songji-ho. M. taiwanensis metacercariae were found in T. hakonensis from Hyang-ho and Gyeongpo-ho and in Pseudorasbora parva from Gyeongpo-ho. Total 11 M. orientalis metacercariae were detected in 3 (6.3%) T. hakonensis from Hyang-ho. From the above results, it was confirmed that various species of DTM are infected in fishes from coastal lakes in Gangwon-do, Korea.
This study was carried out to investigate characteristics of water quality and THMs formation in lake-waters at kunsan. Of the parameters examined for water quality, pH, alkalinity, SO$_4$$^{-2}$ and Co- reflected the characteristics according to the origin, geography and water source of lakes while COD, SS, T-P, T-N and chlorophyll-a corelatively reflected well the influence of pollution factors around factors around lakes. The result of water quality analysis showed that most lakes in Kunsan area have the severe eutropnication problem, especially in summer. In lake-waters, THMFP overally continued to increase until 48 hour with the reaction time and THMs formation was largely achieved within 24 hour of the reaction time. The average formation ratio were 68.2% for CHCl$_3$, 23.6% for CHCl$_2$Br, 7.6% for CHClBr$_3$ and 0.6% for CHBr$_3$respectively and much difference depending on the reaction time was not shown. Overally, 96h-THEFP levels in lakes were high during June~September and showed higher tencency in lakes where could be regarded more contaminated on the whole. These results suggest that THMFP may be available for the management of lake-water quality as one if the useful parameters for the general evaluation of contamination. 96h-THEMFP failed to show the strong corelation individually with pH, TOC, COD and chlorphyll-a.
